- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -13/+84It's going to be a retardedly profitable quarter for Apple + AT&T if they can push 3 million iPhones and new contracts into a saturated market.
- trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+48Isn't it nice that humans have evolved to not compete for survival but over discounts?

Title description seems weird to me... I'm an Apple fan, but I have almost no money to get one of them shiny new iPhones. So unless I get shot, shanked, mugged and thrown into a dark alley its just going to be an ordinary day. - SPECOPS, on 10/11/2007, -4/+33QUOTE (from the article)
However, there's another reason why this rumor could be hooey. If there's going to be millions of iPhones on hand, why would AT&T allegedly be ramping up on staff to control the crowds on launch day? Sure, there'll be people in line and those people may need some babysitting. But if there are enough iPhones to go around, there won't be much of a mob to control, now will there?
/QUOTE
I disagree; if there are 300 people in line, and 500 iPhones in the store they are waiting in line to get, it will take quite some time for all 300 to get in, activated, and out. So, they still need the goons for crowd control, matter they have a shortage or not. - ChuckIT, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32ha i love the photo that they used, the apple lap top rush in Henrico Country Richmond, Va a school was selling their apple laptops for 50 dollars. yet another photo to show that we are truly animals.
- kdjsmith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25I can't wait to see the resumes. Last job: worked for AT&T Wireless/Cingular for three days to help sell iPhones.
- fanboydcs, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25mywhitenoise,
it has flash memory, not a harddrive, 8gb is huge for flash, hell so is 4gb, and who wants a harddrive in something that will get banged around all day in their pocket? (Why the nano is so popular)
Also its far from overpriced, your just used to getting money off the phone when you agree to a contract. - chris4404, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21You don't have any friends or family to celebrate with?
- bilbravo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17@fanboydcs:
No, it was an iBook for $50.... but good memory.

- Anthem26, on 10/11/2007, -1/+153 million * $599 = CHA CHING!!!!!
- joeykilluv, on 10/11/2007, -6/+161.8b in revunue if all that revenue went to apple.

- trer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12i wonder how many Palm Foleos will be in stock at launch. 100,000? 5,000? 100?
- fanboydcs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10chrisbtig,
what are you worried about?
Apple has been known for some problems with their first gen products, but they always take care of their customer, I had an original iMac G5 with the bad logic board and power supply, but apple got the machine back to me in 24hours and it didn't cost me a penny, and this was 5 months after my 1 year warranty expired.
Im sure if there is problems apple will take care of you and everyone else. - xoineg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10The $500-600 seems like a normal price. I bought a treo and it cost 490 with tax (including the 2 year discount). now the treo has a crappy screen, comes with windows mobile, the battery sucks, it actually slows down when you use it a lot, camera is 1.3 megapixels, and 128 megabytes of memory. The iphone has 4gigabytes and also is an smart phone. may not the apps that the treo has, but after using the treo for months the only apps i used were chat programs and email. the office document apps are to crappy for such small screen. This can easily replace a treo and an 5g ipod just add up.
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8What friends?
- jerryparid, on 10/11/2007, -15/+213M iPhones * $600 each = $1.8B revenue, dream on apple.
- macslut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I'm Apple Fanboi#1, and want an iPhone so bad it hurts. However, the idea that Apple would have 3 million on hand at launch is just retarded.
That's a HUGE number to build, package, ship, and then inventory at the stores.
This comes out to 1,500 per retail outlet.
It would be *really* foolish for Apple to do this on a new product. They could get killed if any hardware problem occurred and a recall was needed. There's simply no need to do this for them. It's all risk. It's not better to sell 3 million on day one and then none for the next 3 months than it is to sell 3 million over 3 months.
If Apple is going to bulk up inventory on day one, it will be readily apparent as these stores (which may have up to a dozen of any model on hand) will have to deal with having 1,500 on hand. - altcountryman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6So how many photos of celebrities with their iPhones will we be bombarded with following the launch? It may replace the Starbucks latte in the hand of paparazzi spotted celebs out for a stroll in L.A.
- Scyth3, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9I agree with SPECOPS. There will be a line due to activation, phonebook transfers, the discussion of accessories, etc. (It takes at least a good hour+ at Verizon before I actually get to leave with a new phone)
- DaveTehWave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6No 3G No Care.
- smitting, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I wish my Treo cost $179 when I bought it 2 years ago. It cost me $400 which was a good deal at the time. I have to pay $30/mo for the internet service on it which is rediculously slow. Worst off, my PHONE does not reliably ring. I've talked to several other Treo users who have the same problem.
I was going to switch to blackberry before the iPhone was announced. If the phone just rings and does the PDA stuff I need, it's worth $600 to me, hands down. - fleetskeet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Remember how much people were paying for the Razr when it first came out?
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Once again forgetting about the $500 model, and the fact that they couldn't possibly sell them all in one day (there's simply not enough manpower, even if there IS enough demand, which even I doubt).
3 million is stock for 3.5 months (give or take) based on Apple's 10 million in 2008 plan. - Hello1024, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11buried for burying this
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4With the insane amount of hype the iPhone v1 is getting, I predict it will be at least a year before we see v2 (not counting the probable European 3g version). Apple knows that it would tick people off to shaft them 6 months after they bought the original product, and would very likely deter them from being early adopters of Apple products in the future.
- sn00kie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Dude, 3 million.... that's it? OMG WTF BBQ?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11Wanting an iPhone has *absolutely* nothing to do with being an 'Apple fan'.
- drivenfaroff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"29th of June will be a historical day for every Apple fan"
Although its going to be an great phone / ipod, its only being offered to a small market of fans because of the AT&T tie in. Thus like many others, I can't buy one because AT&T doesn't have coverage in my area. - idean360, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Canada? No? Oh still no info? Thanks Apple.
- jpetrin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5So are is the guesstimate at around 1600 in actual costs over two years? Is this including insurance (a must for a 500-600 dollar device)? How about all of those hidden charges that the cell providers love to gouge you with? I think the long term ass raping....err investment is much bigger then this. Read the fine print people. Don't forget that AT&T is the same company that wants to turn the internet into a toll road. I actually have come to like Apple over the last couple of years, but AT&T is evil and I will not support them, even if they were giving this phone away.
- Import98, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7I can't predict sales but I can't see 3 million people wanting to spend $500-$600 on a phone, especially on release day. Lower the price to "reasonable" and I would be all over an iPhone when my VZW contract is up in April.
- zsears, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3According to that AT&T Q&A that was released to AT&T employees it states:
Q. If I am an existing customer, can I upgrade and will you give me an upgrade credit/subsidy for the device?
A. An existing customer can purchase the iPhone for the same price as a new customer.
However, no subsidies are being offered on the phone at this time. - devindotcom, on 10/11/2007, -9/+12I'm sure everything will go according to plan!
http://crunchgear.com/2007/06/07/the-futurist-we-predict-the-iphone-will-bomb/ - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That's what I was wondering, even if each person just takes a moment to ponder the plan, cell phone stores are not used to throughput. A lot of people means a very long wait indeed...
- chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Usually if you have to sign a new contract, the remaining time on your old contract is not added on top of that. So if you have 6 months left, and then sign a 2 year contract, you have 2 years left, not 2 years and 6 months. The 6 months from the old contract are "torn up".
Now on whether an existing customer of cingular can get an iphone and sign a new contract on launch day...no one knows yet. If they have 3 million phones ready to be sold on launch day, then they have enough phones for both new and old customers. If there is a supply crunch at the store level...usually new customers get those (because more customers = more money, compared to current customers switching just signing a new contract). - fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5@chrisbtig
Believe me, Apple has worked out 99.9% of the kinks from this one. If there is anything Stevie doesn't like, it's things that don't work right. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Is there another phone with such a good web browsing capability?
I haven't seen one and to me it is reason enough to get an iPhone. - fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It is pretty entertaining to watch people bicker endlessly about the iPhone, or any other product, really. It's just a phone, guys, it doesn't affect your life at all whether another digg commenter likes it or not.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5If they are forecasting 3million sales... hah yes, 1% of the population is just going to throw away their current cell phone to drop at least 500 for a phone... Get real.
- cthellis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@EtherGnat
The versatility is nice, but you forget to mention that the new ones are moving off MMC/SD/SDIO support an onto miniSD-only support, which caps their card data limit right now at 2GB. Not to mention that they can really only use it for data storage, and have to rely on internal memory only for the OS and applications. (I'm not positive if they're gotten around old restrictions on that front by now, but using external flash for running apps used to be a no-no or extremely problematic.)
Also, if you want proper Wi-Fi you'll be spending an extra $100 to put a card in that will not (to my knowledge) auto-sync, may stick out the side of your phone, and will occupy that miniSD slot so that you're only able to access internal memory again. ...and IR is not precisely a bragging point. It was nice, and the only real method of wireless communicating in ages past, but with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth out and common, it is a dead-end tech. Why are they still supporting clearly inferior wireless tech and not including clearly superior ones by default? Not putzing around with Wi-Fi is one of the EXCELLENT advantages of the iPhone.
There are always trade-offs. Like that "actual keyboard"? That's nice, but do you know if it's actually faster and easier to use than an on-screen one which can be customized per app and provides you with more screen real estate, or are you simply writing it off because you can't imagine how it will work? Considering the iPhone could provide visual, auditory, and tacticle responses (from the vibration function, however they do it; still not 100% on this bit) to key-striking, there's plenty of stimulus/response that our brains like, and the only other things to judge are how quick and responsive it is, and whether the prediction helps or gets in the way. And if you bring up "dailing in the dark" for an effing TREO...!
There are always trade-offs, but there's nothing overly out-of-whack with the iPhone that makes it a "stupid buy" or "completely not worth the money." Even and ESPECIALLY in comparison with the nearest high-tech smartphone competition. - Hello1024, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Opera mini on any phone is pretty impressive. If you've never tried it it's well worth looking at.
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If it's anything like the 8525 launch, then yes, you're out of luck. When they released the 8525, they had a couple phones per store, nothing out on display for months, and only allowed those phones to be sold to new customer activations only. They refused to even deal with me when i was a customer and wanted one of the phones. One of the many reasons I left.
- maxxym, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Even if iPhone is a success, Apple's stock will not go up that high, so don't hold your breath. The profits from iphone were already calculated in the current price stock.
- Nietzsche1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@yugiohdan6
...like he said, CHA CHING!!!! - xoineg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4the problem with treos and other smart phones is that the browser are so crappy and is hard to view them. now the iphone has a little larger screen and the zooming capabilities will make it better to view websites. and you don't have to click on menu/options/view/zoom/zoom in or out which is soooooooooooooooooooo annoying.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2nah its apple they wont cut the price by 1/3 in 6months. Apple doesn't care about selling at the margin.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually I wouldn't care as long as there was a reasonable upgrade fee that I could trade the old one in for.
- fitzfan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Dont forget that iPhone revenue will be spread out over 24 months, so even if they sell 3 million at launch you wont see all of that 1.8 Billion this quarter.
