- roessnakhan, on 08/28/2008, -9/+112Who ever said it was indestructible?
- supermanred, on 08/15/2008, -7/+96I dropped my Motorola Razr which cost me 499.99 (without any contract) once from my hand, while my arm was at my side...so about 3 feet.
broken.
No warranty, no *****.
This isnt Apple-centric. You break it, you bought it. Theres a reason they sell protective cases.
Now if you want one of those phones that arent just a fad and are designed to be reliable, not just shiny you have to go with a 1990 motorola that looks like a brick and can be dropped from 30 feet... otherwise, as far as newer phones go they just dont exist...drop your Treo and tell me how well it works after. - steelopus, on 08/15/2008, -7/+94Man, I hope you never have a baby.
- Cheezeburgar, on 08/15/2008, -8/+79I think most electronics will break if they are dropped three feet onto hard concrete.
Its your fault not Apple's. - FlyingPhotog, on 08/15/2008, -13/+81Buy a cover for it, cheap bastard.
- joolsca, on 08/15/2008, -8/+58buried for stupidity.
- kraetos, on 08/15/2008, -5/+54BREAKING: sophisticated, delicate, expensive technology breaks when dropped!
- tonaros, on 08/14/2008, -91/+139Man up. You paid to be treated like a chump and overcharged for an overhyped product that affects your ego more than your lifestyle and productivity. You should see this as an opportunity to take a step back and look at the phones that aren't just a fad, that are designed to be reliable, not just shiny.
- dpowre, on 08/15/2008, -5/+39actually, for $200 you CAN get the screen replaced through apple
- xprojects, on 08/15/2008, -4/+37I've actually tossed my Treo multiple times with a lot of force out of sheer spite for it and I couldn't break the stupid thing. As for Window Mobile running on it - that's the exact opposite.
- Seth024, on 08/15/2008, -3/+36You're lucky: you have a girlfriend.
- carton132, on 08/15/2008, -4/+33It was a perfect fresh-out-of-the-fridge Mountain Dew - for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. I loved it. It was cold, refreshing, and had just enough carbonation.
Then I dropped my Dew--it slipped!--from about three feet, and it hit the sidewalk. Pepsi Co.'s design gurus had miscalculated--one fall and the contents fizzed uncontrollably. Little foamy puddles began to run down the sides of the bottle.
The liquor store had bad news. The only way to replace a spilled Mountain Dew is to buy a whole new Mountain Dew. - PeanutCheeseBar, on 08/15/2008, -9/+30Why wasn't she in the kitchen?
- TheKillDoctor, on 08/15/2008, -1/+20I microwaved mine and now get free long distance
- postalblowfish7, on 08/15/2008, -4/+20i don't know what's worse - people being smug about having an iphone, or people who are smug about pointing out that people are smug for buying an iphone.
- effoffpunk, on 08/15/2008, -5/+21my girlfriend "accidentally" dropped my ipod touch off our second story balcony. I was mortified, it was like time just froze. I, dejected, just said "***** it" and went inside, recalling the horror stories of how fragile the things were. She ran down, obviously guilty, and snatched it up. THANK GOD. Not a scratch on it. works perfectly. either I'm extremely lucky or mine is a tank.
- yatoobin, on 08/15/2008, -2/+17i was walking around one day listening to my ipod touch when something fell from a second-story balcony and knocked me out. after regaining consciousness i saw what i assumed to be my ipod lying a few feet away, glass completely cracked. i plugged my headphones in and was amazed when music streamed from the earbuds. i was puzzled to hear songs that i had never heard before. it wasn't until after i tried to sync it that i realized the ipod wasn't mine.
- tokyomonster, on 08/15/2008, -5/+19@tonaros: Why are you so angry that this guy wanted an iPhone? I didn't buy mine to "get in on the fad", I bought it because it's a great product. I used to be a devoted blackberry fan, but I've found that the iPhone offers you way more flexibility in regards to how you'd like to use the device. It functions exceedingly well not only as a phone, but as a business, gaming, and multimedia device.
The problem is the glass screen really. But alot of companies are using that now. I have an 80gb Zune, and guess what? It has a glass screen, and I'm willing to be that if I dropped it onto cement it'd break too.
And face it, all mainstream phones are designed with just about everything OTHER THAN reliability in mind. The only phones that are designed specifically for that purpose usually cost more than the iPhone and are meant for construction or other heavy duty enviroments.
Just get over yourself dude. - Kronk42583, on 08/15/2008, -1/+14for ***** sake!!! stop whining about the price of iphone plans!!!! its no different than any other smartphone/blackberry/treo phone that it competes with. it costs more than regular phones because it does more! HELL!!!!
besides, im under the impression that the 200 and 300 dollar prices are subsidized by the contract you sign, but if you break it and arent elligible for the new contract, then you'd have to pay the full retail price of the phone, probably 500 and 600. thats how it was for me with my verizon plan, you only get the discount once every two years. - ngmcs8203, on 08/15/2008, -4/+16I dropped mine on to 12in tile from about 5 feet. No breakage.... why? I paid $20 for an Incase rubber case.
- johnomaz, on 08/15/2008, -3/+15FTA: "Apple's design gurus had miscalculated -- one fall and the screen shattered across the top corner. " No ***** dumbass. What, you think Apple designers are gods and make indestructable items. Quit crying and learn to not drop your phone.
- coolchu001, on 08/15/2008, -5/+14I've dropped mine a few times on concrete from a height of about 5 feet (no case) but I just a few scratches on the corner. First gen iPhone though (Al back).
- jayzeus, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10...and that's usually considered broken
- Matt2k, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9Man. Sorry to hear about the beer :(
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9you paid how much for a Razr??
btw i've dropped plenty of high end phones by accident onto the sidewalk and aside from a few scratches all of them have been fine, although i tapped the screen on my k800 once not that hard and it cracked -.- - mgilligan, on 08/15/2008, -4/+12No one. The title of the article says "indestructable."
- simplyintricate, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9Time to be an engineer, eh? Take out the glass pieces and buy some cheap $5 plastic and use that to replace the glass. I hear it works too. Plus if it scratches, just buy another $5 plastic screen.
http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/09/ ... - dpowre, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9not for his second one
- themastersb, on 08/15/2008, -2/+9It doesn't even look like the actual screen was broken. Just the layer of glass above the screen.
- shadowspawn, on 08/15/2008, -5/+12No tears for you!
- kidathinnes, on 08/15/2008, -2/+9I know someone that had this happen to there first gen iphone like 2 months ago. They still use it to this day. It constantly cuts them when they dig in their pockets for it too.
- scabbers, on 08/15/2008, -3/+10Your fault for assuming applecare = accident insurance.
- dark_helmet, on 08/15/2008, -8/+15That's the price of an iPhone, with a $2500 contract.
- MarkMech, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Have you never had work done on a car before? You bring it in for a ding and you're paying $2000 for blinker fluid.
- jayzeus, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7The chain was too long, apparently....
- superkendall, on 08/15/2008, -2/+7Like only iPhones every break. You have to have something, and that something can also break...
- KloroFormd, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6My friend drops his RAZR V3 about 5 times a day (no joke) about 3 feet each time. Looks like ***** but hasn't broke.
I've thrown my Sanyo freebie phone from the living room to the kitchen (ceramic tile floors) after the antenna came apart in 3 pieces causing me to disconnect on an important call. Super-glued the antenna back together and other than a gouge in one corner still looks and works like new after 22 months. - se1zure, on 08/15/2008, -2/+7isn't that the same for every single piece of electronics ever? Or does dell magically send you a new laptop when you drop it and break the screen?
and have you seen the thing where they test how hard it is to break the iphone? it is actually quite durable. - dgtljunglist, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6Everyone else can stop commenting now, you win.
- bokep, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5If you actually read the article, the author is complaining that apple couldn't replace the screen and she instead has to buy a new iPhone.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -2/+7I pissed on mine and through it into a river and it worked just fine.
- bradleyland, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5ATT accidental damage coverage is not available on the iPhone.
- theartfuldodgr, on 08/15/2008, -2/+6slided? really?
- se1zure, on 08/15/2008, -5/+9Oh no i dropped my phone but did not pay for accidental insurance. wahhh.
Please. Do the responsible thing and add it as a rider on your insurance policy. Otherwise, doesn't ATT over accidental damage coverage for like $4 per month? I have it on alltel, and it covers everything. - Ellrick, on 08/15/2008, -4/+8Dont drop your phone, got it, great news item.
- pauldy, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4The past of the past is my present to you.
- chelsealeaf, on 08/15/2008, -2/+6Front page on the Consumerist in 3...2...1...
- ZachSka87, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4I have a VX9900. I've dropped it many, many times. Almost thrown it. Onto concrete.
It still works great, and I still love it. - carton132, on 08/15/2008, -1/+5I threw my iPhone into a pond and the surface of the water broke!
- CabesMojo, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Same thing I did, I've dropped it plenty of times on concrete, asphalt, tile, wood, marble. Not even a dent all because of the Incase rubber case.
I've also seen them take a lot of abuse without cases, sounds like this lady just was really unlucky. -
