- eightyd, on 11/21/2007, -3/+16Dear god people, please stop with this. I am so sick of all these 'OMG MY BROTHER'S COUSIN'S PIMP'S PROBATION OFFICER READ IN A FORTUNE COOKIE THAT AN 8G IPHONE WILL BE OUT IN THE NEXT TEN DAYS, TOTALLY OFFICIAL AND CONFIRMED BY AN INSIDER VERY CLOSE TO STEVE JOBS' MAID' stories that somehow make digg's front page every five minutes. I love the iphone and want one as soon as it is available in my area, but don't make me read another article about it getting 3g and a v10 that gets 68mpg. I have very important "don't [x] me bro!" articles to read.
- mindsnare, on 11/21/2007, -0/+12If it was set for a may release, wouldn't it have been leaked out of the FCC for approval already? That's the precise reason Apple announced the iPhone 6 months before it's actual release because devices always get leaked during the FCC approval stage.
- sinner0423, on 11/21/2007, -3/+13It's all speculation. To be quite honest, my iPhone has a problem sustaining battery life through normal use with edge/ipod/talk time, I couldn't even imagine how many minutes the battery would last on a 3g iPhone before it crapped out. Unless they doubled the thickness of the phone to support a battery and upgraded the technology, it won't happen any time soon.
- axisofphilippe, on 11/21/2007, -5/+12I would presume we would get this in the US before Spain gets it in May.
- ec92009, on 11/21/2007, -1/+7What sort of 3G coverage do we have in the US?
- ausfahrt, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6Now all i need is 3G in Canada ... yay for Rogers.
//Western Canada - eclipxe, on 11/21/2007, -0/+53G is a standard cell-phone term used for the last 5-7 years. Come on.
- ezran, on 11/21/2007, -2/+6Let's hope that it would be true. I am still holding my breath for an iPhone. The 3G version should be a good bday present for me :)
- SillyKary, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Last time I checked, the FCC had no jurisdiction over Spain.
And it's entirely possible that this might be an EU-first release. They have substantial 3G network coverage in Europe, while the US doesn't. - gpl100, on 11/21/2007, -2/+5Canada WILL get the iPhone in January and it’s 3G. Here are the facts:
Apple said last January that they are working on rolling out the iPhone to Asia in early 2008. Canada wasn’t mentioned at all when they talked about the iPhone. So we fell between the cracks. Any announcements about Canada with other countries (as a side note) will be made at Macworld 2008 in Jobs presentation.
Another announcement, this one on the Molsons contest announcement in October, (which Molsons later said was an error), only increases the chances of an iPhone for Canada. Big companies like Molsons Coors don’t usually design web pages with detailed legal jargon regarding contests, and then come out and say “oops… we guessed about the release date for a product two companies are introducing, that technically is not even coming to Canada”. Contest legal agreements are usually written up by lawyers, so this is saying that even Molsons lawyers got it wrong too. I don’t think so.
January 2008 ties in with MacWorld, the iPhone for Asia, and now this Molsons error. There is just too much smoke around January… and where you have smoke there’s fire.
The reason why I’m thinking about a 3G iPhone in January is based on the three quotes/press releases below. The timing of two of these releases (so close to January is suspicious). Rogers (Canada’s only GSM provider has spent a lot of money rolling out a new 3G network right across the country, and fully implemented in October. They are ready for 3G right now. It’s very likely they told Apple “don’t come knocking until you have a 3G iPhone”.

-AT&T- “Steve [Jobs] wanted to have ubiquitous coverage for the iPhone, and you have to remember it was two years ago when 3G networks were not everywhere,” Stephenson said. So they went with the slower EDGE network. So does that mean there will be a 3G iPhone soon? “Yes, there will be a 3G device,” is all he would say.

1st press release
-BROADCOM –Oct 15, 2007 On Monday, Broadcom (2.5G EDGE iPhone and Wi-Fi Chip-Maker) announced a single-chip HSPA processor that integrates all the key 3G components; High-speed HSUPA 3G baseband, Multi-Band RF Transceiver, Bluetooth (R) 2.1 w/EDR, FM transceiver Radio, 5 MegaPixel Camera support with 30 fps video and TV Out, and most important to Steve Jobs and Apple: “extremely low POWER” (lower power then the current edge chip = no brainer).

2nd press release on the next day
-ROGERS -TORONTO, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Rogers today announced the next phase of its 3G high speed wireless network and Vision services in 22 Canadian markets. Earlier this year, Rogers introduced its Vision suite of services in Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe. Rogers is the first and only wireless carrier in North America to offer wireless video calling.
The Rogers Vision suite of services operates on Rogers’ new High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network, the fastest wireless network in Canada. HSPA is the latest evolution of GSM, the world-wide standard for mobile wireless communications. This 3G protocol significantly increases download speeds on wireless devices, providing a user experience similar to broadband high-speed services.
The expansion announced today introduces Rogers Vision services for customers in Greater Vancouver, Kelowna, Victoria, Whistler, Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Ottawa/Gatineau, Kingston, Sudbury, Barrie, London, Kitchener/Waterloo, Guelph, Windsor, Greater Montreal, Quebec City, Chicoutimi and Trois-Rivieres. Rogers Vision is already available in the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton/St. Catharines, Burlington/Oakville making this unique suite of services available to 60% of the Canadian population.

I’m I right to guess that the 3G iPhone will be:
100%
3G
16GB (iPod touch has it so will the iPhone….just after the holidays)
Reintroduced at the $599 price point (people are willing to pay this price for the best and Apple knows it + Apple opened up that price point so that the could clear their edge models and introduce the new version)
85%
5 MegaPixel (Competition wise, it’s keeping up with high end smartphones in the market)
FM transceiver Radio (who are we kidding, this feature is WAY to advance for Apple)
50%
Assisted GPS (Broadcom can add a GPS chip easy and it’s low on power which will separate the iPhone from the old model and the 2008 competition
What do you think? - inactive, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Common sense is what you need. Since when did G stand for gigabyte. Gigs or GB more likely.
- tpzoso, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3um, may is a little more than 6 months away. :P
- n8to, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Then you would presume wrong my friend. Europe and Japan are still years ahead of the States when it comes to mobile phones.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Job's gave battery life as the reason for going with EDGE, however, Broadcom's new chip is efficient: http://preview.tinyurl.com/2v4nx9
- DPimp1262, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they did. Apple always seems to have somewhere around a 6 month lifespan for each rendition of their products and the iphone would actually be going up on 11 months of being in production come may, so if anything it would be overdue for an upgrade by then.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2You'll see Broadcom's new "phone on a chip" in the iPhone in '08. Here is a Google search for it: http://preview.tinyurl.com/2v4nx9
- Tenoq, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Rest of the world has 3G - and that's a fair market to ignore. Down Under has >98% of the population with 3G coverage. Be a shame to ignore that (plus we don't have Wi-Fi everywhere which the iPhone is practically relying on at the moment).
- GliTCH82, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Why build a 3G network if they don't intend to use it? (AT&T)
- mp3dog, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2"...as soon as May" ????
You call that "soon"? WTF??? December would be "soon". May is practically in another freakin' lifetime. - digthedug, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Apple should sell the iPhone 2.0's when most customer's 2-year contracts expire.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2If this happens I will be super pissed. Why must technology change!
- gta0012, on 11/21/2007, -1/+3Where are all the "OMG APPLE IS SO AMAZING!!! 3G !!!! TAKE THAT PC USERS!!!!!!!!" talk?
- BossX, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Rogers has 3G in Toronto.. I've used a Cingular 3G wan card here
- emomakesmecry, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I'd wait till Jan or Feb. It seems that most likely an update will be out around then. My guess is March at the latest.
- skeen07, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I'm getting my iPhone next week. I'm not going to be a happy bunny if an even newer one comes out so soon after.
- realyst, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Fido is the only one I heard is offering 3G at this point...
- Tenoq, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1That's a valid point. 3G phones always report higher power usage, so in a device like the iPhone it could be a critical factor delaying their release. That said, perhaps battery technology has advanced a little more since it's release. :p
- willgonz, on 11/21/2007, -2/+3Hopefully before 4G comes out. Oh and I will be in line once again.
- Omis, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Any clue when we will get any type of iPhone in canada? Rogers has been pretty quiet about it.
- ausfahrt, on 11/21/2007, -3/+4Would it be unlimited data on 3G for close to the same price ... or would they not be able to pull that off. Think of how much more bandwidth would be munched up with unlimited 3G. Maybe another reason they never went 3G in the first place.
- blurrie, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1i'm cool. i'll be happy w/ my iphone for my xmas present =D
- tbenathan, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I think you're right on everything, though Apple would never put in an FM radio - with an iPod integrated, there's no need for such old technology.
I totally agree with the rest, though - they are all logical and necessary upgrades that will enhance the usefulness of iPhone. - inactive, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1at&t and Cingular, now merged, both have 3G in major markets with more on the way. T-Mobile is behind- another reason why Apple went with at&t. http://preview.tinyurl.com/2ar9ba (a google search for it)
- danieleran, on 11/21/2007, -1/+2Actually the iPhone is faster in practice on the slow EDGE as other crappier phones are on a 3G network like EVDO, simply because the software works better. Google it. And of course WiFi is FAR faster than any mobile network.
- ronmexico, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I think a $100 credit would be in order.
- GliTCH82, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Australia also has a total population of 31,000,000. Not that it matters, I'm just pointing it out.
(It matters.) - rdas7, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Here's why I disagree:
First of all, that there will be a 3G version of the iPhone is not really in dispute. Steve Jobs said so, and even if he hadn't it's clear that it would make eventual business and technical sense. The question still remains when.
Secondly, the extremely low-power 3G chip still has to be tested by the FCC, so give a 6 month delay between iPhone 2.0 announcement and shipping. Such an announcement will have a very visible effect on iPhone sales, and Apple have a stated goal of 10m iPhones by the end of 2008. Unlikely that they will do anything at all to jeopardize that (especially announce a replacement product 6mo's in advance that would create a lull in sales).
Thirdly, just because a carrier has (or is installing) 3G has no bearing whatsoever on iPhone deployment. As we've just seen in Europe, networks like T-Mobile, O2 and Orange who have fantastic, tested, established networks, were still convinced to run iPhone on EDGE.
As for storage capacity, this is entirely based on market prices. Across the entire iPod line, Apple has always put as much storage as they could afford at the same price point. As memory price comes down, they manage to fit more of it in. With the US economy the way it is now, this will be a challenge for them. I do agree that a 16GB 'bump' is likely at some point (possibly towards the end of 2008 to boost any flagging sales, as people anticipate iPhone 2.0)
As for the camera, again unlikely that they will adopt the 5MP technology any time soon. Basically devices using the 5MP camera component (on the market at the moment) are marketed as Camera + phone. Unless there is some tight integration with iPhoto, I don't see the camera ever becoming the focal point (ha! pardon the pun) of the iPhone. Unless I am wrong and they add this in the next revision (late 2008/Jan 2009) I would not bet on iPhone ever getting anything but the cheapest camera they can stick in it (and, as they've done with iPhone, optimizing the results significantly through software).
FM will never be built in to an iPod. The truth is, iPod is the death of radio.
Regarding GPS: I'd agree with you and say that's up in the air, 50/50 puts it about right.
Overall, battery life is the limiting factor in most all of these technical issues. Currently iPhone just about manages all the features it has packed into it, with a 2-3 day usable battery. It's not great for a phone (remember the good old days, they'd last a week on a charge!!) but as far as modern (3G) handsets go, it's about par for the course.
The one single reason I do not think that iPhone 2.0 is anywhere on the horizon as yet, is the subscription accounting that Apple has signed up for iPhone sales. This allows them to provide new features to customers via software updates without needing to charge for them. This is a two-year program. Looking at the timescales, that means that if the iPhone was released in June 2007, they will cease to add features to it in June 2009. That means, the iPhone in its current form is likely to remain untouched until an announcement of iPhone 2.0 in January 2009 (once Apple have reached, or missed, their "10m units in 2008" goal) with the new device shipping in June 2009.
The amount of engineering and design that has gone into the current handset is nothing short of staggering. For a Version 1.0, this device has *clearly* been designed as a platform to build on. Between now and 2009, we're going to see a whole lot more innovation through software for it, and by the time 2.0 ships, I think we'll look back at 1.1.2 and smile like when you boot into Classic. And if you're curious as to what iPhone 2.0 is going to look like, hardware-wise, look no farther than Apple.com/iPhone. They've done a whole lot right here. - chkdg8, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I'm waiting for Macworld 2008 and even then, this might not be cleared up.
- n8to, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1We'll get the iPhone when hell freezes over. And looking at the weather network, I don't see Toronto getting that cold in the near future.
I honestly don't think we're going to get the iPhone anytime soon. Since Rogers is the only GSM network (FIdo, of course, being owned by Rogers), they can take their sweet ass time negotiating with Apple. It's not like Apple can go to Telus or Bell.
Do yourself a favour and just buy an iPhone and unlock it. - dibby1, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Do you honestly think Canada is going to get a 3G iPhone before the US? I'm afraid most of your points are based on speculation friend... and I hate speculation. Even if it was 3G we would undoubtedly get raped outrageous Rogers data rates so really I don't see any reason to be happy..
- scyon, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I do not think that word means what you think it means, my friend.
- mikehill33, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1what will the fan boi tax be?
- mds76, on 11/21/2007, -1/+1Crossing my fingers that we see a 160GB iPhone for under $400 in the next 2 years... when my verizon contract expires :)
- danieleran, on 11/21/2007, -1/+1Well that's just wrong. Over the last three years, iPods have only got revisions every year. Apple's laptops and desktops also get a major rev about every year. Sometimes there is a minor bump, but significant updates happen about every year.
Add in the fact that APPLE PUBLICLY SAID 3G WOULD COME LATE 2008, and you can rest assured the Spanish just missed a siesta. - DaleoftheUK, on 11/21/2007, -1/+1Obviously the iPhone will get updates eventually, and one of them is likely to add 3G. Seeing the new completion from other manufacturers is good, like the iPhone only with 5mp and 3x optical zoom and "dvd quality video". Oh I hate the term DVD quality video.
- stryfe137, on 11/21/2007, -0/+03g should not really be that much of an issue. there is no more energy being used in 3g than in wifi. combining that with the new broadcom chipsets should alleviate any worries.
apple may not even publicize the release of a 3g iphone. apple seems to have a magical power over everybody (see at&t revenue shares). it is within the realm of possibility that it could include the fcc
- djpants428, on 11/21/2007, -1/+0Maybe I'll be able to afford one by then...
- ausfahrt, on 11/21/2007, -2/+1Phones have much different cycles than other electronics.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -3/+2If this keeps up, people aren't going to have anything complain about. I think we should write a petition to Apple, begging them to rethink this or else, none of the bloggers will be able to act all self-important, explaining to the world why they don't want an iPhone. Please, Apple, think of them.
- RoamShell, on 11/21/2007, -3/+1In a world of a ridiculous amount of acronyms and short forms, get real. I just got tired of having to wikipedia stuff in articles because they're too lazy to give the gist or anything.
Hell, if they just said "3G service" I wouldnt've even bothered. -
