- speedk0re, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18very cool! I wonder if it comes with Oregon trail.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Probably because a lot of people don't understand what a "dumb terminal" is.
- anarchyx34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Pretty cool. My dad has a 1930's telephone that he uses in his office. I guess this is the geek equivalent.
- blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I was inspired by the work of a couple others, which can be seen in the article's links. Good to see folks are giving themselves a use to put these great machines to daily, productive use. It's made my office a much happier space. And the CRT puts out that nice Apple plastic smell when it warms up. :-)
- Dan005, on 10/10/2007, -10/+21Anyone else not understand what the title is trying to describe?
- zaren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Dugg up on the assumption that it was a dumb terminal reference.
- eak125, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Great now his Mac Mini has has just died of dysentery.
Oregon Trail Forever! - Niten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You used 92 bullets and shot 4210 pounds of meat, but you could only carry 200 pounds back to the wagon.
- scoot2006, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8You have died of dysentery.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5you have lost 2 oxen trying to ford the river
- commiecat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6How about a C64 still running a BBS?
http://home.ica.net/~leifb/bbs/ - allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I never got the chance to play with an old apple (that one came out the year I was born!), but I have to admit - that is cool. Wonder if we'll be doing similar things to our iPods in 20 years time!
- j4son, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Press return to size up the situation.
- WaveRunningNakd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ah, memories.
When I was 12 years old, I worked at the local family market making $2/hr (+tips) bagging groceries. It took me the entire summer, but I saved up enough money to buy my first computer: an Apple ][c.
That fall, I wrote my first program: ASCII Blackjack, written entirely in basic.
That winter, the computer was destroyed when the old woman living above me left her bathtub running which overflowed and caved in the ceiling. Lost the blackjack code, too.
I miss my Apple ][c. And I ***** hate old people. - henryrose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Pretty sure they're not kids when they're 23 ...
- johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3if you're too young to know... then the article will probably not make ANY sense to you.
i don't mean to sound like a dick, but there is a lot of nostalgia mixed into this project, and maybe a healthy dose of "OOOOH! i can do something with that Apple][ i just can't get rid of". - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3I don't know what's worse, the old lady causing you to lose your ASCII Blackjack -- or the fact you worked for $2/hr.
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I prefer the Apple IIGS. it was an amazing machine, in-expensive and backwardly compatible. I think it was a much better choice for most people than a Macintosh. If Apple would've called the IIGS a Macintosh, and forgot the Lisa maybe they could have captured a bigger market share back then, than trying to sell people a $2500 computer they didn't really need.
- blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Me too. :-) While the //c lives in my office, the IIgs lives at home...
http://pix.blakespot.com/view/computers/apple_IIgs/ - fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You must be cool for writing out M$.
- blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"23yo Apple //c Tied to Mac mini as Serial OS X Dumb Terminal"
An Apple //c (a model of Apple Computer that debuted in 1984) has been connected to a Mac mini (this is a currently produced Macintosh model) by way of a serial cable and is being used as a dumb terminal (as defined by wikipedia: "In the context of traditional computer terminals that communicate over a serial RS-232 connection, dumb terminals are those that do not have the ability to process special escape sequences that perform functions such as clearing a line, clearing the screen, or control cursor position") to interact with Mac OS X running on the aforementioned Mac mini.
My stab at clarifying... - johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i guess most old people would put ][c or IIc. the // probably confused some people that never actually used a IIc.
i'm going to get burned for this, but people on Slashdot would have gotten it instantly. i think the average Digg user is just too young to understand this nrrd-speak. thanks for the submission. i still have my old ][e squirreled away that i could never get rid of. makes me wonder.......... - abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And you didn't catch what he was referring to by "dumb"
Buried as idiot. - UndyingShadow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How about a Newton smoldering in bubbling plastic?
- blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I submitted this story and it's probably uncool to comment in the thread and whatnot but so many people keep saying it that I had to ask. What is so confusing about the title of this post?
- johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2as old as me? i still have an Apple ][e at my mom's house.... and pondering if i need to do this project.
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Again?
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I kind of ache for a cool "home computer" experience. I don't see why those guys who make joysticks that connect straight to your TV can't just make a 6502/65816 with a flash slot (MMC/SD) for a few dollars more. I guess upgradeable direct-to-TV gadgets have no market :(
- cjwl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Someone runs a terminal emulator and it is news?
- pacozorro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Down already?
http://duggmirror.com/apple/23yo_Apple_c_Tied_to_Mac_mini_as_Serial_OS_X_Dumb_Terminal/ - blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well spoke. Indeed, you are correct.
Is it probably a better IRC experience on one of my 20" screens with font scalability and window resizing? Sure. But _every_keypress_ I make on that //c as I do my IRC chatting brings a little nostalgic joy. And that's a nice thing to add to my workday. Eh?
Some of my other geekly endeavors can be seen at:
http://pix.blakespot.com/view/computers/
...enjoy, if you're a geek. :-) - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Considering you called it "dumb" just a few comments ago, why are you bothering with this? Having nothing constructive to do with your life must be such a burden.
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3There are still quite a few C64 bbses.
- Ioncannon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Basically what the title means is the Apple //c was connected to the mac mini through a serial connection, to be used as a dumb terminal. A dumb terminal is a computer with limited capabilities, but connects to a more powerful computer (IE: Mainframe) to use its resources.
- blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, the marking on the machine's case and it's boot title logo both indicate //c. That's by far the most common way I've seen it referred to over the years. I guess you had to be there, unlike most folks reading this.
As far as I recall, it went basically like this:
][, ][+, IIe, //c, IIgs (tho IIGS with GS in smallcaps is the ideal) and Apple IIc Plus. - kendallwi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How about a Newton running a webserver?!
http://newton.splorp.com:8080/ - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, you assume I didn't know what he meant. If I had misunderstood, I would have commented on his first post.
- ScottAG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Damn! I remember when the IIc came out... How old does that make me?...
- thebrokenlight, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6Looks like the quadratic formula exploded all over that title.
- AlrightMister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I had one of these and a color thermal printer, oooh. Karateka anyone?
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Someone has too much time on their hands.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1wheres the lamer who usually says "someone has too much time on their hands"
cool project just for the fun of it. - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The Internet comes with: http://virtualapple.org/oregontraildisk.html
- SVPirate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's reaaalllyyy cool
- blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1To everyone jumping on me here and in linking blogs/news sites about calling it an Apple "//c" (as opposed to "IIc" or "][c" or whatever)...
http://pix.blakespot.com/view/computers/apple2c/terminal/its_not_IIc.jpg.html
Sheeesh... :-) - blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Check this:
http://www.jbrain.com/vicug/gallery/view_comments.php?set_albumName=qlink - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can do it virtually without the physical machines: http://virtualapple.org/
- spooniep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1this all sounds a bit familiar...
http://pdw.zoomshare.com/index.shtml/63b2407517a7e8a33040b01a398bc79f_467c5513.writeback
http://digg.com/apple/Apple_Hacking_for_Fun_and_Profit - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who still has their //c? I still got mine in the closet. I wonder if it still works. I know it worked before I put the stuff away.
- blakespot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I appreciate emulators, and use them plenty. (I have a P3 700 setup for dedicated emu use and I get much mileage out of emulators on my GP2X on the go -- http://bytecellar.com/archives/000076.php ) But they are no substitute for actual metal. At least while functional vintage machines still exist. (A little solder and they're pretty easily repaired!)
