- whiteknives, on 04/18/2009, -5/+38Pixels mean nothing. CMOS sensor size (along with lens quality) is everything. Megapixel numbers are nothing but sales-hype meant to fool the average consumer into buying something they perceive to be better because it has a higher number.
- BarriedaleNick, on 04/18/2009, -1/+21Pixels mean nothing? I know it's the trendy thing to say but it's simply unture. While pixel count comes secondary to optics and sensor sizes they are actually fairly important. A large pixel count along with good optics etc is better than a small pixel count with good optics - it allows cropping/zooming and obviously more detail. If pixels mean nothing then you could make do with none which is obvious nonsense.
- InactiveCargo, on 04/18/2009, -6/+21I don't see a 2 megapixel camera as a weakness *in a phone* - I'm just happy that it takes reasonable quality pictures. It would be nice if it had autofocus etc and the refreshed version with a 3.2 megapixel camera will be nice but I didn't buy an iCamera, I bought an iPhone.
- CanadaMan87, on 04/18/2009, -1/+15Indeed. The fact that the iPhone has just 2mp isn't the problem - it's the fact that the camera is simply of poor quality, regardless of resolution.
- amorpheus, on 04/18/2009, -0/+9There is some value to shooting pictures larger than 640x480. It's just not everything.
- BarriedaleNick, on 04/18/2009, -3/+11Absolute bollocks. My Samsung Tocco (5MP) takes very decent pics and my previous Sony 960i took good pics as well - much better optics and better image quality than the iphone. To even think of comparing your crappy little iphone camera to most modern point and shoot compacts is completely laughable - the iphone's camera doesnt even hold up against other phones let alone the Canon ixus range or Casio Exlims..
- svensksvamp, on 04/18/2009, -2/+8It's all about how you use it:

The camera in the iPhone is better than any other 2.0 MP cell phone camera I've compared it with. - B1665r, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6Id be happy with a prime focus close enough that I could macro shot sheets of paper and be able to read the text. Its not like I plan on doing FOV effects with a cell phone camera.
And maybe a 8mm aperature instead of the 1-2mm aperature it is now, so that I could take reasonable pictures in situations other than full sun.
Meh, I never used video when I had it on my old phone, so I can skip that. - waydee, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6Serious bollocks, there were phones 5 years ago that beat the quality of the iPhones camera.
Compared to anything by Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson it's completely outclassed - the major phone manufacturers have reached a level of quality and feature sets almost identical to that of point and shoot digital cameras. - B1665r, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5In my experience, the iPhone camera and optics is on the low end of camera phones. What the iPhone does have is the ability to display the pictures it takes. It will be neat when we can send them to other peoples phones later this summer.
- B1665r, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4Oh I don't know, I think software is going to start doing a great job compensating for crap optics. I know the sort of smart features on my exilim handy camera make it a nicer 8mp camera than my 8mp Cannon Powershot pro from a couple of years ago.
- ba5e, on 04/18/2009, -2/+6Zoom? there is no optical zoom lens so I presume you mean digital zoom which is nothing more than a lie. You may as well take full frame and re-sample a small area of your video and you get a better 'zoom'.
- waydee, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5The resolution isn't the iPhone cameras weakness, it's the poor quality optics, lack of flash and lack of features that make it seem very dated and produce low quality images - not much can change that.
- fidunderground, on 04/18/2009, -4/+7the iPhone camera gives the "WOW" effect despite its limitations... thats all that matters!
you need high quality pics...go get an SLR! - BrendanSheehan, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3I know one thing. I own an iPhone and I'm not happy with the camera.
If pixels meant "nothing" then a 1 pixel camera would take decent images. Pixels count for something. Clearly not the most important thing in any shape, but they serve a purpose. More pixels never means better, but too few and the image can be significantly worse. We'll see what happens when this new camera comes along, hopefully the pictures will be better. We're not looking for an SLR in a cellphone, we're looking for some small, noticeable improvements. Another megapixel will make it better, autofocus, along with other hardware upgrades - sensor + lens + flash for dark situations. - nepidae, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Why do you have a problem with people wanting to improve the quality of iphone pictures?
- MyEyesWideOpen, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Buried for calling jailbreak apps "illicit". Unauthorized perhaps, but certainly not illicit.
- vindicatur02, on 04/18/2009, -3/+6This is common-sense photography stuff not specific to an iPhone camera. These tips are applicable to any camera phone or camera, for that matter. Buried as lame.
- Baku, on 04/18/2009, -1/+4Personally the best cam app I've seen for the iPhone is clearcam (alas, it's for jailbroken iPhones only) - it stitches more than one 2mb pic together to create 4mb pics.
http://gizmodo.com/5145124/clearcam-for-iphone-sti ... - insky60, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2I don't see anywhere on that page that says you can use the camera like a barcode scanner. It also sucks that you have to use text messages.
- hiPpymIck, on 04/18/2009, -1/+3you could also maybe get more out of your iPhone cam using it to read barcodes and checking consumer info
http://www.goodguide.com/about/mobile - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -1/+3Digital zoom is not better than nothing.
Digital zoom is just stretching pixels. There are many ways of up-sampling that are far superior.
So no zoom is better than digital zoom, just crop your photo afterward.
Although I agree that it does not have enough settings. Maybe in 3.0 - nepidae, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Cool story bro, and what if you just want to take random photos? Do you have a problem with people getting the most out of what they have?
- Philbert, on 04/18/2009, -1/+3Pixels mean nothing? My best friend was killed by a pixel!
- Philbert, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2It's a weakness when I'm switching to an iPhone from my old phone which had a 1.3MP camera, but way more features including digital zoom (better than nothing), video recording, white balance settings, and more. It also took better pictures in dim lighting and while it didn't have a flash it did have a really bright LED light. That's a Sony-Ericsson s710a.
http://images.auctionworks.com/hi/59/59120/Sony_Er ... - stealpick, on 04/18/2009, -1/+3My favorite tip I've come across so far is that you can hold your finger (or thumb or phalange of your choice) on the shutter button while you're composing the shot, and then release to take the picture. Makes for much steadier photos than having to tap the screen to take the shot.
- nepidae, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2you didn't miss anything, vindicatur02 just wanted to sound smart.
- nepidae, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Ok thats sweet. Its so easy to take blurry shots with the iphone.
- CanadaMan87, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1That would be PaS, you knob.
- microview2007, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1I'm surprised they didn't mention Pano. The iPhone's fixed camera lens means backing up to get a scene into full view and in most cases that is impossible. Pano makes it easy to take awesome panorama shots using iPhone.
http://debaclesoftware.com/ - RyomaNagare, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Anyone knows about an app that allows me to print the date on the pictures? I'm currently using icaption, but it is a POS, that will hang my iphone unless its freshly rebooted, its quite inconvenient to do that before starting to take pictures.
Does CameraGenius app allow for printed date? - uknowwhoibe, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1article was lame, I was just informing the public that it was
- chazuk, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2Wont fix the HARDWARE will it?
- nepidae, on 04/18/2009, -2/+2because 3.0 isn't out yet
- B1665r, on 04/18/2009, -0/+0You can put a microsoft barcode reader on the iPhone so you can read the microsoft propritary barcodes on xbox games.
As for the other 2d bar code readers on the iPhone, I have simply come to the conclusion that they do not work... - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -1/+1Pixels mean something, just not for many average consumers.
My sister in law bought a 12Mp digital camera.
It was a POS (point an shoot, not piece of *****) and the lens on it was bad.
The sensor had higher resolution, but the lens is so inaccurately manufactured, that I would doubt if you could see the difference between 4 and 12 megapixel quality. (3/4 of the pixels in 12 megapixel shots are fuzz.)
And for point and shoot stuff, it usually goes on Facebook and other sites like that.
For enthusiasts: I hope there will never be a SLR on a cell phone. - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -1/+1It's a camera phone and it work great for me.
- Dinogle, on 04/21/2009, -0/+0Thanks. I believe these tips can help me take pretty nice pictures.
And I am also happy to find a way to get all iPhone Camera Photos to computer
http://ipod-tool.com/ipod-guide/how-to-transfer-ph ...
Now I don't need to worry about the memory. - ElliotX, on 04/18/2009, -5/+4I think the iPhone does a decent job considering its limitations. I use a DSLR for my main photography, but I also have fun with the iPhone and post-process using the CameraBag app when I'm out and about having fun. I've posted quite a few post-processed images on my website http://redskyimage.com/
- ba5e, on 04/18/2009, -3/+2These tips are generic for about any camera
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -2/+12 megapixels is as much as the average consumer needs. That's the pixel count of HDTVs and larger computer displays.
- Philbert, on 04/18/2009, -2/+1The big list of apps is iphone specific, or did I miss something in photography classes?
- nepidae, on 04/18/2009, -2/+1Then perhaps it shouldn't have been named it "jailbreak".
- thingamagizmo, on 04/18/2009, -2/+0For anyone looking to get an optical zoom on their iphone without a bulky addon, check out this amazingly slick case from griffen http://spedr.com/1zz00
- jdandre, on 04/18/2009, -3/+1If you want to be a professional photographer, get a professional camera. If you want to take cool snapshots while you go about your daily life, the iPhone works great. After all, I bought it as a phone...the camera is just an extra perk.
http://jdandre.tumblr.com/post/90963431/referring- ... - spookyttws, on 04/18/2009, -9/+7Wow, I know we've progressed a huge amount in digital cameras in the last decade, but I got my first (2MP) camera 5 years ago and it cost a few hundred. The iPhones camera isn't great, but it's a hell of a lot better than the VGA cameras I've had in most of my previous phones. Plus everyone who's jailbroke their phone has enabled the camcorder and zoom functions already.
- Chogger, on 04/18/2009, -2/+0Sorta pointless in my opinion. The camera feature is the IPhone is just for when you want to quickly take a picture of some friends or maybe something cool you saw on an ordinary day. Chances are you aren't going to care too much about how it looks. If you did you'd probably have an actual camera on you. When I go through my photos I might be reminded of that one party or that funny thing my friend did, but I'm not going to care if the angle and lighting was right.
