- Munceenuts, on 06/30/2009, -0/+35I like how the title says "You may not know" instead of "You don't know about".
- yifanlu94, on 06/30/2009, -3/+34For people who care, 100+ small features in 3.0: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=71562 ...
My favorite is still lol is no longer LOL - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+19The 1.3 million people that bought one. Now GTFO.
- Retrodigg123, on 06/30/2009, -0/+13Dugg for fix of LOL..
that was so annoying, everyone would ask me "whats so funny?" - Addaone, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8Dugg for adding curse words to the dictionary...no more "what the duck"
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8So were you lazy or stupid? I guessing some amazing combination of both.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+7Dugg for the tethering hack.
- 360glitch, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7Dug for no more automatic LOL
- Itaintrite, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6Dugg for including redsn0w and ultrasn0w lol. Not exactly 3.0 "features" though XD That's like saying using illegal Windows cd-keys an XP feature :)
- ultrafez, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6Dugg for all being on one page!
- vannoy, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6Was it really 15 minutes, or are you just being catty? And even if that is true, is it really Apple's fault?
- Resistoon, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5Press and hold a number for other font doesn't work for me on my 3G.
- KillTheAcademy, on 06/30/2009, -3/+8very cool stuff!
- MacParrot, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6Yep, that's what I did. Accused you of being lazy and stupid. The lazy part is somewhat questionable, but thinking that a screename has anything to do with what I do or say pretty much confirms the stupid part for you. Thanks, I was wondering.
- GregR, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Actually, that's cool because it's one character, not 3.
There are other keys on the 'number' keypad that do other things:
- ? and ¿
- ! and ¡
- ' (apostrophe) has ‘ ’ '
- - and —
- $ includes £ ₩ ¥ € (¢ 'tho)
- & and §
Not sure what some of the symbols will be good for but they are there if you want them. - nunofgs, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Anyone notice that the song you are listening to is no longer saved now? In the past, I could listen to a song or podcast, pause it, and 2 days later if I pressed the button on the headphones, the song would resume right where it was.
Now it constantly loses its place and simply gives me a random song. Damn annoying! - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5^ that's just the new 3GS - you're forgetting the millions of previous customers
- disruptor108, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3Agreed, I've bought audiobooks from Audible and they have the 30 second rewind feature in them, in addition to being able to change the speed of the book right in the same place.
- pjpaul, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Me too
- latca, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I have audio books that I ripped myself in iTunes and 30 second skip back works fine. So you don't have to buy from Apple.
- imsobored151, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5Does number 4 not work for anyone besides me?
- GDOG5, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3LOL
- subliminalurge, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4I don't know. I'd still rather have LOL than the Lol I frequently end up with now.
- Itaintrite, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Probably since you're just an average joe who got the iPhone just to brag about it, or because it's "popular".
- cjw10, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2It was the thumbnail that caught my attention.
- sunburner, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Great. Just what I need. Something to encourage my ADD by having a 'zoning out' safety net. haha
- Kirizan, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Since I'm one of the few who don't own an iPhone yet, I'm digging this for the same reason. Hopefully others will follow suit, and all list will start using the power of the interwebs to put lists on one page...
- BrendanSheehan, on 06/30/2009, -2/+4Interesting. Copying a text also works by holding (no need to double tap) the bubble. Redeem is not new, it's just in a new location. There was a redeem button in downloads before. Still, there's good info in there, thanks for the effort.
- whiledo, on 06/30/2009, -3/+5Augh, Apple you're killing me! I haven't updated my mostly-for-audiobooks Touch to 3.0 yet, but seeing the 30 second rewind thing I was about to run out to the car, get it and buy the update. Then I see this:
"Note: This only works for media bought and downloaded from iTunes."
WTF is wrong with you, Apple?!
Do you hate me because I only pay for your hardware? Is this an attempt by you to force me to buy stuff from iTunes? Do you think I can't see through the sham? - rogeriogal, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2There's an app for that…
- macslut, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Don't blame Apple, blame the article. It's wrong.
But in fairness, they probably just tested this, and came to the conclusion without investigating why this was the case for them.
The reason why is that there's a difference between music files and audiobook files (.m4a versus .m4b). And a tagged difference in MP3 files for podcasts.
If you're using iTunes on a Mac, you get AppleScripts to convert to audiobook files at http://dougscripts.com
But really all you're doing is changing the extension and the file type (and converting to an AAC if it's an MP3 audiobook). - aquapete, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Oh my God, thank you Mr. Jesus. I was sooo happy when i saw that.
- shhteffen, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Another improvement is the stopwatch, which in the past never gave the total time when using lap time. It only gave you all the lap times, and the final 'stop' gave you the last lap time, not the total.
With 3.0 they fixed it, my last 3 mi. run was 22:26 I was happy to discover after the upgrade. Nice surprise. - stinkypickles, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1FCKGW FTMFW!!
- protodon, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Oh good, I wasn't the only one sending that to people. But now my iphone has decided to change most instances of "move" to "mice" I mean, what the duck?
- handmadewallaby, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Yeah, my only fear is how Tethering the thing on AT&T will affect the monthly bill. However, a couple of years ago I had a Nokia N75 with tethering software by Nokia and not AT&T. I called AT&T Customer Service and they would not charge me extra for teathering because I was not using thier program to do it. Mind you this was 2007, but it may still apply to this.
- MrSkills, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1I can't believe you wasted all those characters on the "..." after also!
:-) - JshMRsn, on 06/30/2009, -2/+3I'm pretty sure some of these features have been available before 3.0.
- Iwantawii, on 06/30/2009, -3/+4I can confirm that #16, the Internet Tethering Hack, actually works in the USA!
It took me 2 minutes and tethering worked right from the get-go with my Win7100 machine, but not my 2007 MacBook Pro- although the MBP recognized a new Ethernet device. (USB tested only) - ballen12, on 07/06/2009, -1/+2copy and paste is awesome, except in a text message...
http://rantsandstuff.com/2009/06/23/one-problem-wi ... - jjustin01, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2I still have yet to see anyone point out "shake to undo typing". type some crap, shake your phone and undo your typing.
- whiledo, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I know about the whole .m4a/m4b ***** and such. I used to have to do that. More recently, Apple made it where you can just set the media type to Audiobook in iTunes, even for random mp3s. You can also separately set "remember position". So that's what I do now rather than re-encoding.
- dragossh, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Jailbreaking isn't illegal. Unlocking, well, depends where you live.
- DJRobX, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Yes - extremely annoying. Even under 2.x, it'd lose its spot once in a while (perhaps when it ran low on memory) and always when syncing even if the music was unmodified. It can't take up much memory on its "disk" to persist the current song and playback position. I'd settle for just the song!
- MrSkills, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1I too thought that "..." was a bit pointless (and slower than just typing it), but now I know it's just one character I can see how it would be useful in something limited like a text message or twitter post.
- whiledo, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1I was complaining about the 30 second skip back which the article said only worked with iTunes audiobooks. I took that to mean DRMed ones (can you buy non-DRMed audiobooks now?)
And as far as I know, what iTunes does to mark the mp3s as audiobooks is only done in the iTunes DB and not to the actual file. And it just assumes m4b is audiobook. But again, it doesn't actually do anything to the file so there's nothing there that actually helps the industry. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+3Very insightful, thank you.
- lougoose, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Yeah, the idiots forgot to say you need international keyboards turned on. That is the only difference I can see in their screenshot vs mine.
- macslut, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1If you knew this, then why complain that Apple is attempting to force you to only buy stuff from iTunes?
There is no spec for MP3s or AACs to be differentiated as music, podcasts, or audiobooks, although they both have tagging, file typing and extensibility to allow parties to develop this functionality, which is exactly what Apple has done in a way that (hopefully) leads the industry as anyone can produce and distribute content based on Apple's published specs as well as mirror their specs in hardware and software.
IOW, what more could Apple do here? - whiledo, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Ah, thanks. Stupid article. My apologies, Apple. Now if you would only let me use a 3rd party tool to sync my music/audiobooks to my Touch.
