- StrikerObi, on 11/27/2007, -1/+11Worth it if ONLY for this tip:
Disables the warning given when closing a window with text entered into a form that you haven't submitted. To bring back the warning, repeat the command with YES.
That warning box drives me insane. It doesn't work properly. For example, if I update and submit my facebook status and then close the tab/window, this warning still shows up despite the fact that I have in fact submitted the text. It's some sort of problem with web 2.0 driven text boxes, the kind that don't refresh the entire page once submitted. - tyywebb, on 11/27/2007, -1/+11Am I the only one that can't comment here with Safari 3? (using firefox now)
- theblueprint, on 11/27/2007, -4/+13I'm still getting Leopard set up "just right", and this article will definitely help. Thanks for the tips.
- imikedaman, on 11/27/2007, -2/+10There is a GUI app that handles this, called the Property List Editor. I'm guessing he used the Terminal so (a) you can easily copy and paste commands instead of following multiple steps in the app, (b) so you can easily enable administrator access for editing the System files, and (c) in case people don't have the app on their system.
- inactive, on 11/27/2007, -2/+9for those clueless, see here:
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/sandwich.png - rupertmorris, on 11/27/2007, -4/+10Those tips were actually somewhat useful. Dugg.
- Tippis, on 11/27/2007, -0/+6No. It affects most non-Mozilla browsers.
I suggest using the link at the bottom of the page: http://www.digg.com/bugreport - zeebo, on 11/27/2007, -0/+6Because with gconf and gconf-editor the hidden options aren't really all that hidden.
- ErikHK, on 11/27/2007, -4/+9Also, I don't think Apple wants to bloat their GUI by having ALL the settings in different GUIs.
- SPThom, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3Aw, I tried that with my fiancee just now. Turns out I'm not on the sudoers list. Busted.
- insertAliasHere, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2I ***** hate you
- MonkeyFarts, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Nope, you're not the only one. For me the box just grays out and the comment never gets submitted. Also, whenever I comment on Camino, my comments are automatically dugg down to 0 diggs. I just reported both bugs to Digg. It seems that the only browser that seems to be working without glitches is Firefox.
- MonkeyFarts, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Yes, but it gets to a point where it's too omission, so I do think tapaul has a point here. There's a fine line between simplicity and usability, and with Time Machine I think that Apple has put too much emphasis on simplicity. I can't think of any reason that I shouldn't be allowed to change basic settings, like time between backup intervals, right there in the GUI. It's not like it would add clutter. Just a simple dialogue box would suffice. It would be nice to be able to do more than turn TM on/off and select your backup drive without having to dig through the terminal to do so. :)
- allywilson, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Not a Mac user (at the moment, have been in the past) but I think you're right. I also think it was a daft tip to be honest. *.app's are just directories, they're not binaries. Why not just change the permission on the icon within it? I'm guessing that supposed tip will cause problems somewhere else (correct me if I'm wrong - but disallowing rights to an entire directory just for an icon seems a little over-kill).
- techweenie1, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Thank the lord.
- fanclerks, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2***** douchebag!
- comradeTJH, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2oh sorry.. they forgot to add ".plist" - so for it to work it must be like:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer.plist 'EnvironmentVariables' -dict 'CI_NO_BACKGROUND_IMAGE' 1
or
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer.plist 'EnvironmentVariables' -dict 'CI_NO_BACKGROUND_IMAGE' 0 - MonkeyFarts, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Yep, this should do the trick:

Note that sometimes after a reboot folder actions are disabled. I haven't found out why yet, but if this ever happens you can re-enable them by right-clicking on any folder and selecting "Enable Folder Actions," and then this will begin working again. - MacParrot, on 11/27/2007, -1/+3These are some nice tips. Kudos to the author. For those complaining about it not having a GUI, most people wouldn't do these things. This is for those that want to customize and tweak the OS. Apple may or may not include some these is future updates via System preferences. Please stop complaining about a company you don't like and an OS you don't use.
- aaronm67, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Either "soo-doe" or "soo-doo". "Soo-doo" is the official pronunciation, but "soo-doe" is more commonly used.
- SirConfucious, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2I would suggest not using the spotlight "icon" fix if you ever want to use spotlight but just don't want the silly icon to be showing all the time. what the "fix" does is simply make the spotlight executable not, well, executable by anyone. Your machine will try to run it, then puke. I'd imagine there are some interesting problems waiting to crop up from this as the services application will try to re-run spotlight because its not running, and will fail over and over again...
- happylinuxguy, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2Where's the command to bring back the size column for the find window? Then I'll be happy.
- IllBeBack, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2Ha ha you put down Apple's user base as being pseudo-intelligent while at the same time you have the writing ability of a 4th grader.
- r2builder, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2I'm not keen on the way that the finder window resizes when coverflow is on. If I drag the corner of the window, the coverflow area gets larger, instead of the list of files. So, I need to drag the corner, then make coverflow smaller so that I can see the list. Irritating.
- VANOS, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2Nice, but what I would really digg is a
COMMAND LINE THAT WOULD ENABLE TIME MACHINE TO BACKUP TO A NAS! (without breaking on reboot, as there is a "crutch" fix out there that works until reboot)
It's pretty sad that functionality doesn't exist yet... for those with laptops that aren't sitting on the same desk all day, time machine is worthless, IMHO because I don't like to jack around with setting up an external drive just to backup. If time machine is supposed to be passive, I think connecting a damn external drive is pretty active if you ask me. - signal15, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1This works. Set the drive up as a local backup drive and start the backup. Cancel out of it, delete the folder it created. Then put it on the network, connect to it, and fire off your backup. Works fine for 2 of my machines.
The reason you need to delete the folder it created is because for local backups it just uses a directory structure, and for network backups it creates a sparseimage because it cannot tell what the underlying filesystem is, and it may or may not support resource forks.
I want to know how to turn on encrypted backups. This functionality existed in the pre-release versions of Leopard, but seems to have been removed. - tekhna, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Is there a terminal command to unlock my keyboard? Oh wait, it wouldn't do me any good because I couldn't type it in. Since my Leopard install my MacBook has become unusable due to this keyboard lockup issue. I am going back to Tiger until Apple admits the onus is on them and fixes this damn bug.
- techweenie1, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1I killyou
- colander, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
- stalefries, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1How did you pronounce sudo? This has bugged me.
- collywolly, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1So Linux has some obscure command and it is difficult to use.
Apple has some obscure command and it's a "hidden feature".
Fanbois. - comradeTJH, on 11/27/2007, -1/+1sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer'EnvironmentVariables' -dict 'CI_NO_BACKGROUND_IMAGE'
made my day. - sims89, on 11/27/2007, -3/+3Great article
- illwil, on 11/27/2007, -0/+0If someone typed it up for you and had it formatted correctly and placed it in a file on a jump drive, would you be able to (with the trackpad) select the text and drag in to the terminal window?
Or, if the terminal only takes direct text input, could you hook up a keyboard via USB? - vwvan, on 11/27/2007, -3/+2i like sea monsters.
- allebone, on 11/27/2007, -6/+4Call me stupid ( Iv never used Leopard) but wont running a repair permissions in disk utility undo the spotlight change?

- richlizard24, on 11/27/2007, -21/+12I like 2% milk the best.
- muniak, on 11/27/2007, -10/+1I think apple might just be appealing to it's self important pseudo intellectual user base.

- inactive, on 11/27/2007, -12/+2TThis is my iphone.
There are many like it, but this one is MINE.
My iphone is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.
My iphone without me is useless. Without my iphone, I am useless.
I must dial my iphone true.
I must blog straighter than my enemy who is trying to out blog me me.
I must pwn him with my tech knowledge him before he download ubuntu. I will...
My iphone and myself know that what counts in life is not the application we use, the noise of our ringtone, nor the programs we make.
We know it is the iphone that count. We will get iphone...
My iphone is human, even as I, because it is my life.
Thus, I will learn it as a brother.
I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories,
its sights, and its visual voicemail. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage.
I will keep my iphone clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready.
We will become part of each other. We will...
Before God I swear this creed.
My iphone and myself are the defenders of my country.
We are the masters of our enemy.
We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until there is no enemy, but PEACE. - killuall, on 11/27/2007, -11/+0http://www.youtube.on.nimp.org/watch?v=DNO6G4ApJQY
here are some more - pfromg, on 11/28/2007, -22/+10>sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto StartInterval -int 7200
>Changes Time Machine's backup interval. Requires an administrator password.
So you need to use a freakin terminal to do that? Is leopard half finished or what? That you need to open a terminal to do anything (let alone those things) is a shame on apple.
Or maybe those are things that Mr jobs doesnt want "ordinary" users messing with ?
I cant see any logical reason for not having standard a gui interface to any of those settings.
- Rhino2, on 11/27/2007, -18/+3I'll post some tips... inside your mom.
- pfromg, on 11/28/2007, -20/+4if they where useful , wouldn't Apple have given you a gui interface to them , without having to HACK at a prehistoric terminal in admin !
don't forget some of us have different languages and NONE of those commands work without first decrypting the correct path which is a joke.
I really cant share anyones enthusiasm for this OS.

What is Digg?
