- tinus, on 10/13/2008, -3/+209I have a comment you can't live without:
I'm doing just fine without those apps, thank you very much. - doctoralf, on 10/13/2008, -3/+73OpenOffice and NeoOffice? What's the point?
- rsm5068, on 10/13/2008, -3/+63Visual Hub is no longer available, sorry to disappoint.
- moisie, on 10/13/2008, -0/+56If I can't live without them then why do I need the list? Surely I already have them? If I don't then I seem to be doing fine without them so I obviously can live without them.
- wallryan, on 10/13/2008, -0/+53every so often one of these lists gets posted...for the most part they are all the same
- vgnezdilov, on 10/13/2008, -4/+49I'm sick of this "can't live without" garbage.
- ocularist, on 10/13/2008, -4/+47one word.... "LAME"
- basye, on 10/13/2008, -3/+46Here's the List and my comments:
1. OpenOffice--a great app if you absolutely cannot afford to pay for an office suite, but still I prefer to use iWork '08 which integrates far better with OSX. However, most people use MS Office and for absolute guarantee of compatibility it's a must. When it comes to business you just can't cut corners and embarrass yourself with files which cannot be opened.
2. VisualHub--Haven't used this app before, but QT Pro works quite well (and work pays for it).
3. VLC MediaPlayer--definitely a must! The interface is very OSX-friendly.
4. Cyberduck--also recommended.
5. Onyx--this is the first application downloaded to our Macs as they are being set up, paid or free. An essential time-saver for keep things nice and neat.
6. iStat Pro--not essential at all, but if you are a notebook owner or a tweaker, it is helpful.
7. AppCleaner--have it and never use it. It really is unnecessary for OSX.
8. Chocoflop--never heard of it until today, but am willing to give it a try, although it'll be nearly impossible to pry me away from PS and Lightroom.
9. AppFresh--Growl does it better, and more.
10. AdiumX--this is the only chat app I use and integrates well.
11. CarbonCopyCloner--the easiest bootable backup application for Mac, hands-down. Have *never* had an issue of a bad copy, either. The runner-up would be SuperDuper (free version) for cloning, but for scheduled incremental backups it's a better choice. CCC is very friendly to new Mac users, but SD has excellent customer service and answers questions very quickly.
12. Mac-Loc--never used.
13. coconutWifi--haven't used, but iStumbler does this well and is free.
14. DockSpaces--never used.
15. Pingus--never used.
16. SnapNDrag--never used, cmd + shift + 4 is easy enough.
17. NeoOffice (see comments from #1)
18. HideFolders2008--never used.
19. Skim--never used, but want to try it out.
20. YouControlTunes: Have been using it for over a year. The features are very helpful but you could live without it. - brendon2020, on 10/13/2008, -1/+28no quicksilver on the list, buried :)
- stilesja, on 10/13/2008, -0/+22I for one am NOT doing fine! I am on my death bed. I've gotten all these apps but Visual Hub seems to be out of business.
I know I'd be able pull around if I could just get a copy before its too - georgemandis, on 10/13/2008, -1/+22I'm going to counter with 20 apps your Mac would actually have a much harder time living without:
1. Finder
2. System Preferences
3. Software Update
4. System Events
5. UserNotificationCenter
6. Problem Reporter
7. ReportCrash
8. ReportPanic
9. Console
10. Disk Utility
11. Keychain Access
12. MacBook EFI Firmware Update
13. Terminal
14. System Profiler
15. Printer Setup Utility
16. Dock
17. Folder Acton Dispatcher
18. Language Chooser
19. Archive Utility
20. Installer - _skin_, on 10/13/2008, -0/+16Limewire?
- ripter, on 10/13/2008, -0/+16This list sucks.
- basye, on 10/13/2008, -1/+13Yeah, guess the author couldn't come up with an original app to make it the even 20.
- atgmac, on 10/13/2008, -2/+14On the Mac? No way.
- stolemybike, on 10/13/2008, -2/+12Limewire?
- alchemist27, on 10/13/2008, -2/+12smartarse
- scrubzor, on 10/13/2008, -0/+10limewire? learn to use torrents, p2p is old school.
- ksgant, on 10/13/2008, -2/+11It is available as the source code has been released also and it will become open source.
- klaas4, on 10/13/2008, -0/+9The title should be: "20 Mac apps you can't live without, again..."
- inactive, on 10/13/2008, -5/+13i only use vlc from that list, buried for being a sensationalist whore
let's try that again
1. firefox
2. transmission
3. itunes (or a good ***** player for you elitists)
4. limewire
5. vlc
6. mplayer
7. photoshop
8. aurora alarm clock
9. openoffice
10. snes9x - elendryst, on 10/13/2008, -1/+8Its Handbrake, not handbreak.
- crowbar77, on 10/13/2008, -0/+7You have a lot of spare time don't you?
- ShoggothDreams, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6VLC is not as good as MPlayer, which is just as open, just as extensive in formats playable, but far less buggy and not as slow and bloated.
- cawpin, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6OpenOffice 3.0 runs natively in OS X. I've been running the Beta of it for quite some time now and it is wonderful.
- wwwluckyro, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6You're screwed.
- atgmac, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6Who uses gnutella anymore anyway? It's slow, full of spam and you're likely to get sued.
- Macintoshreader, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6Isn't LAME an MP3 encoder?
- AmyVernon, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6Thanks, Basye. You just did a lot of homework for me, and also answered my main question about OpenOffice. :-)
- Millsee, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6He likes to annoy himself.
- etandrib, on 10/13/2008, -2/+8Some of those apps are good for what they do but "Can't Live Without". I've been living for a very long time without any of them.
- drlha, on 10/13/2008, -1/+7Surely you can live without one of either NeoOffice or OpenOffice being as they are basically the same thing, just different implementations.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6At least this one had a couple that aren't on 99% of them. Seriously though, it's amazing how often these come out, and how redundant they are. Wow, there's a program called adium!
- veriix, on 10/13/2008, -1/+6Should I ask my doctor about this?
- newbill123, on 10/13/2008, -1/+6From the article: "15. Pingus is a free clone of the ultra-addictive classic Lemmings game, available from the Apple website games section or from this issue's disc."
Gee, it seems like the editors of TechRadar.Com would at least... you know... EDIT the article from MacFormat to not refer to "this issue's disc" since I don't believe TechRadar is delivered in Issues nor has discs available. - bhumes, on 10/13/2008, -2/+7Cyberduck is average at best. Forklift, Transmit and Yummy FTP are all WAY better (although they're not free).
- _skin_, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5It does not do the same thing jack! Handbrake rips, Visual Hub converts...
PS... Visual Hub does not suck. Far from it. If by sucks you mean you have to pay for it. Then yeah... that does kinda suck, but the program is awesome. - jstock23, on 10/13/2008, -2/+7Wow... theres something like this every few days... with all these apps i dont have... i must be dead...
- Kelmon, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5According to the article, you're dead. Best of luck.
- redwallhp, on 10/13/2008, -1/+6No, LAME Ain't An MP3 Encoder
- speedyrev, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5I'm living without them too. Maybe we should rename the title to, "A couple of good apps but the rest of this list you could live without."
- Millsee, on 10/13/2008, -0/+5It's it's, not its.
- djjuice, on 10/13/2008, -0/+4so this makes a total of over 300 apps I can't live without
- svensksvamp, on 10/13/2008, -0/+4Replace VLC with Perian.
And ChocoFlop? It's not even done. Try Gimp, there's a native version coming out soon. - hijohnmark, on 10/13/2008, -0/+4How about you guys graduate to bit torrent instead?
- bradleyland, on 10/13/2008, -0/+3Anyone digging you down is either willing to put up with crashy, confusing applications in the interest of using something free, or they've never used Cyberduck and they just wanted to be a prick. I've tried using Cyberduck, I really have, but with a Transmit license in hand, I just can't go back.
- Gneekman, on 10/13/2008, -0/+3Long answer? Yes.
Short answer? ys - atgmac, on 10/13/2008, -0/+3Limewire has a terrible UI. Who would want to replicate that?
- Millsee, on 10/13/2008, -1/+4Who'd want that?
Anyway, you know damned well that Crysis is limited to boxes of crap that can't run it anyway. - InsaneOni, on 10/13/2008, -0/+3Limewire....if you want to get a letter from the RIAA or the MPAA. I can't believe people still use the Gnutella network.
