- finalcloud33, on 11/11/2008, -6/+38I like the iPhone flashlight... I used it several times to peer behind objects like TVs and what not
- Zendervision, on 11/11/2008, -3/+32The payphone locator could be useful. Whenever someone asks to borrow your phone, you could direct them to the nearest call box. You know, if you were that sort of person.
- SRSco, on 11/11/2008, -1/+28Actually, no. I have my phone on auto-brightness because I prefer it that way. That means that when it's dark and I launch Mail or another white app, it's a dim light. The flashlight app automatically turns to the brightest it can without going in and adjusting the options. Very handy. It was free, and I've used it a few times.
- uknowwhoibe, on 11/11/2008, -4/+29The flashlight feature actually came in VERY handy during Hurricane Ike. I was out of power for a week in my apartment. I would use the belt clip, clipped on my shirt collar in my pitch black kitchen and make tuna sandwiches.
Some of the apps are very silly, but the flashlight was actually awesome then. - inactive, on 11/11/2008, -2/+21the payphone locator would be handy for someone who has a ipod touch maybe?
- cgibbo, on 11/11/2008, -3/+19How about that app that lets you send text messages, but not picture messages? Man that is so... wait a minute.
- tirwinjr, on 11/11/2008, -0/+14you're just trying to justify poor.
- mediaspree, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12Like the article points out you can just open your Mail or Contacts to get the same effect. As long as you didn't pay for it though, more power to you :)
- Rev0lver, on 11/11/2008, -2/+14That app that cost an insane amount of money that ended up giving you nothing but a reminder of how rich you are was quite stupid.
- uknowwhoibe, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12The apartment complex had generators for the lights on the sidewalk...with sockets under them.
I sat out on the side of the road, read digg and charged my phone. - mediaspree, on 11/11/2008, -0/+9Where did you charge your phone? Mine needs a boost almost every night.
- bruck, on 11/11/2008, -5/+14Flashlight - useful (turns off auto-lock I think)
Bill Splitter - yeah try going out with 6 people that all had different amounts of different priced food, and then use a simple calculator. Sorry this app is useful
Parking Meter - Really, you memorize where you park and how long is left on the meter and NEVER get parking tickets? Seriously this app is a great idea. - cgibbo, on 11/11/2008, -1/+10An *****?
- madgamer7, on 11/11/2008, -0/+7I didn't think to use Flashlight when I lost power in Ike, but if it wasn't for the 3G network and Spore Origins I would have gone crazy!
- DKNUCKLES, on 11/11/2008, -0/+7What about the "Im Rich" Application...
- NoSalt, on 11/11/2008, -0/+7UK Payphone is so UK Superman can find out where to change his clothes.
- gymbrall, on 11/11/2008, -0/+5Dwight Shrute?
"I never smile if I can help it.... Showing one's teeth is a submission signal in primates. When someone smiles at me, all I see is a chimpanzee begging for its life. " - jydesign, on 11/11/2008, -0/+5Shame the developer perhaps, or even the person who downloaded it. But some of these are just stupid-simple, yet effective. The check splitting app has been on other phones for a while, so it's good to have an iPhone counterpart to be competitive. This article is just link bait IMO.
- Jeepinator, on 11/11/2008, -1/+5Parking meter is also useful. I don't know why he says its not. I mean you might as well launch the timer, but whatever.
- slanted, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4What ever happened to just telling the waitress "separate checks, please"?
- yokes, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3No SimStapler? No Hold Button? Not a great list.
- mondoman89, on 11/11/2008, -0/+312. Seismometer
You're in the middle of an earthquake. Do you (a) run like hell, praying to the deity of your choice?
You don't run if there's an earthquake. You take cover under a desk or go to the nearest doorway to ride it out. If you start running around you're bound to get hurt in an earthquake. - inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3I'm curious, but not curious enough to download iTunes. Care to share what it is?
- WiZZLa, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3^ real good app.
- BXRWXR, on 11/11/2008, -6/+9Where's the one that helps you smell your own farts?
- edwartica, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3Meh - no worst than some of the apps we had for the old Palm OS.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3I love how the person who wrote this keeps making fun of the users, saying they're wasting their lives etc... and it took you how long to compile this list and write descriptions for each?
- mytCbumps, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3I like the Seismometer app! I use it to show how badass my car system is compared to other systems.
- ZincSaucier, on 11/11/2008, -2/+5how do they shame the iphone? they add crappy features if you choose to get them, and take nothing away
- kurtwinter, on 11/11/2008, -1/+4No. 7, Parking Meter, is actually quite useful. In NYC, you can only load up a parking meter up to an hour, and the parking tickets start at $75-$125. You get towed if you leave it past certain hours, like 4, 6, 7 or 11. So, I'd say it is plenty useful.
- jumanji69, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3There is an even better flashlight app in Cydia. It's also called flashlight - but it turns up your screens brightness to 100% to make the light even brighter.
It makes a pretty big difference... you should check it out - madgamer7, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2I used my car charger during the outage :D It worked out well since I could listen to the radio for news at the same time. Should have bought a battery powered radio...
- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2That was already a well documented fact.
- edwartica, on 11/11/2008, -1/+3Yeah......
http://www.cracked.com/article_16765_5-ways-stop-t ... - SRSco, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. But I got Light by Erica Sadun (which I guess is no longer in the AppStore) and it get brighter than my default brightness when I turn it on.
- kiensoy, on 11/11/2008, -2/+4@ SRSco, that only works with the flashlight application from Cydia or Installer. None of the flashlights applications of the AppStore have the capabilities of modifying the screen's brightness.
- metz8504, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2I agree that the flashlight app comes in handy and is convenient sometimes, even though just turning on the phone pretty much achieves the same results.
- edwartica, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2I actually think that could be useful - ie if one is indecisive when they're hungry.
- SlyT862, on 11/11/2008, -2/+4or drug dealers.
- gusto, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2bruck, stop being so tight, and split the bill six ways. It all evens out in the long run and people won't remember you as being obsessive about paying less because you had one less beer.
- Sluz, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I love that Parking Meter App! - I use it all the time. It's a real life saver. One of the few apps I actually use.
- asnider, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Well, I don't know about you, but if a stranger asked to borrow my phone, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't just hand it over.
- edwartica, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1And what about Cold Beer? Seriously, that could be very useful.
- fraggle35, on 11/11/2008, -0/+10nly 16? more like 1600
- captainbethany, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Dugg for "Hit her with a spade*
*Don't hit her with a spade." - kangorillas, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1I actually over the Flashlight app it comes in really handy
- HungChimp, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Best game... Super Pig ... I swear! ;-)
- asnider, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1It's nothing like that. The author says that these particular apps are pointless, not that the iPhone itself is pointless.
- rugger, on 11/11/2008, -3/+4Anyone with a basic understanding of math and time should never need a dedicated app to either split bills or keep track of how much time has passed since you walked away from the parking meter. If you have trouble with either of these two tasks, I pity you.
- edwartica, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1It could also be useful if your batteries are low. ;)
