yeah, mousing over the time for about half a second so that the date shows up, MS really dropped the ball on that one >_> - M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26Wow that article was inaccurate.. It would be nice if the author did a *little* bit of research for his "pet peaves" before making these claims. Most of them are just because he was ignorant of them being there already..
#15
Actually, there's a preference pane in OS X to change that

Yes, they can.

Okay right, he lost me there.

The Dock is meant for apps not windows.. what do you think exposé is for?
#11
Is it REALY that hard to click the corner? You have to move your mouse a centimeter more down, oh no!
#10
Quicksilver is really nice, so I don't have to worry about this. But this is one thing I somewhat agree on. Apple should have a list of apps somewhere other than the Finder, but it definitely doesn't belong in the Dock.
#9
I've never used this, but, personally, I'd much rather have a full size keyboard on a laptop than one extra key..
#8
It's a hell of a lot easier than Windows, and there's already drivers installed too. Don't really see what's wrong with that.
#7
I somewhat agree on this as well. It does need to be more consistent (as in: pick the themes and stick to them), but personally I think the brushed metal apps contrast the white aqua pretty well. The only problem is they're brushed and look like crap but Uno fixes that temporarily until Leopard comes.
#6
Yup, there's a tweak that actually needs to be fixed
#5
I love how they made three problems out of one, but I guess I do agree on this. It would be a nice tweak, but it really isn't that hard to click the bottom of the column instead of the top..
#4
Yup
#3
Okay, sure
I also think they should have the previews (at least for the pictures) preloaded when you load a folder. It's pretty annoying when you're trying to scroll through a bunch of pictures quickly in the Finder to pause for each one.
#2
I don't really understand what everyone's problem about this is. Just copy and paste it. It's a lot safer anyway, if you copy and paste at least you know the original is still there and the file isn't going to vanish if you accidentally copy something else. Even if you delete it, it's still in the trash (for the time being)

How about relaunching Finder? cmd+opt+esc > relaunch Finder
"Over-protective Shutdown Error Trapping? When I shut down, I want to shut down. If I actively go through the process of choosing Shut Down or Restart, whether it be by selecting the option from the Apple menu or depressing a key combination, I want the system to shut down or reboot, not ask me if I'm sure. --Thom Reid"
You can option-click the shutdown option in the menu or use the ctrl+opt+cmd+eject shortcut to shutdown if you want.
" Renaming Isn't Easy. The process of renaming files is highly mouse-centric on the Mac. There's no F2 option (as there is on Windows) that lets you select the file and press F2 to expose the filename-editing mode. The mouse process requires very precisely timed mouse clicks. Anyone who has ever been forced to rename a long list of files under both Windows and Mac operating systems will likely agree that the Windows way is easier. --Michael Cullison"
How about pressing Return? - Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Response to user comment 2: Renaming Isn't Easy.
All you need to do is select the file and press Enter. - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Here is the less annoying single-page print-article version:
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=printArticleBasic&articleId=9006104 - LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I think that they should write an article about their own website.
1. Take away that F*&$ing ad that unfolds itself from the right-hand corner. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17My thoughts as a Mac geek:
15) (No date display): Agreed, there should be an option to display the date along with the time in the menubar.
14) (Widgets on desktop): Coming in Leopard, available through third party software now.
13) (Inconsistent contextual menus): Couldn't figure out what they were complaining about.
12) (Documents in the Dock): Hell no, they shouldn't add open documents to the Dock. It's cluttered enough as it is. Documents are fine in the Dock apps' contextual menu, or accessed by option-tabbing to the app you want, then option-~ to the window in the app, or simply via Exposé.
11) (Managing window size): Here, Apple should have a modifier key that enables this behavior. Like if the user holds down the command key, the border of the window the mouse is over can get a bit thicker, and they could resize from any edge.
10) (Accessing applications): Just make yourself a shortcuts folder in the Dock, with shortcuts to apps and documents you most frequently use. You can also put a folder in the dock with categorized shortcuts to your applications, to help find what you want quickly. Apple shouldn't do this for you; you just need to spend a bit of time customizing your computer to suit your needs.
9) (Backspace or delete): Yes, Mac notebook keyboards suck ass. Apple, figure out a way to add some more needed keys, make the arrow pad bigger and further away from the shift key (I know I'm not the only one to delete lines of text by accidentally hitting shift-up arrow by accident, instead of just the arrow key). The F-keys need some spacing in there as well.
8) (Printer setup screens): Printer setup screens are designed by the Printer manufacturers. Complain to them if you're not happy.
7) (Inconsistent user interface): M'eh, whatever... I'd say fixing the f'ing Finder takes priority...
6) (Laptop screen dimming): Agreed, need a setting somewhere to adjust this behavior.
5) (Grab points for Column resizing): M'eh whatever... Maybe they could add more grab points with a modifier key... Otherwise, don't clutter the interface.
4) (Automatic resizing of columns): Bad idea. First of all, some names will always be too long. Second, when you browse through different levels of your folder hierarchy, the last thing you want is the columns constantly moving all over the place.
3) (Display bug in column view): That's a bug. Please provide steps to reproduce to Apple so they can fix it...
2) (Cut files in the Finder): This should be added.
1) (Finder refresh): Pretty sure this is usually handled properly. If there are cases where it's not, you should report them to Apple so they can fix it. I've never seen any lag in Finder refreshes since Tiger... - Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15There is a really easy way to edit a name, the right enter button makes a name editable.
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Here's a tip for Windows users: Resize your taskbar. Making the taskbar taller also makes it so that the date is displayed. Problem solved!
RE: Do many people use their workstation as a calendar? Can they not afford a few clicks? It's a waste of screen-estate otherwise.
Its a waste of screen-estate if you have a small screen. I need the date quite often, sure I could hover over the date or make a few clicks, but I'd rather not have to. Besides, I don't know about OS X, but on Windows you can auto-hide the taskbar if you really need the space. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -18/+30"No Date Display. For all their convenience features, one of the most obvious data points that neither the Mac nor Windows quite does properly is your basic readout of today's date."
*sigh* Speaking of pet peeves.
Do many people use their workstation as a calendar? Can they not afford a few clicks? It's a waste of screen-estate otherwise. - manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@DaffyDuck
That's Command+O (which, incidentally, is rather funny, as it comes out sounding like "commando". So I say, 'You just press commando.'). Okay, end of unfunny rant. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Please supply some reasons or don't be surprised when you are dugg down.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I am a Microsoft Fanboy...
I think Windows 98se was the greatest OS ever...
I own a X-Box
I PAID for Microsoft Office
HOWEVER I have to hand it to Mac on this one...
they have a hell OS on their hands, i like it. I don't plan to use it, but i can still acknowledge it's quality. I won't go out and buy a Mac for this, but if i had one I'd upgrade, and if they can keep this up in 5 years or so when i get a new computer it may just be a mac.... - jetskidude911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's a pretty good article, but I must say that setting up printers in OS X is very simple. To me, it's easier to setup a printer in OS X than in any other operating system. I've never had a problem with it, and I've never ran across a printer that it couldn't detect right away.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Ummm, click the clock, there's a popup menu that shows the date. That's good enough for me, and just as easy as rolling over the date and leaving my mouse there until the date pops up.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1915. No Date Display
Ummm are you serious? Click on the date at the top right of the finder it should display the date. if you are that anal about it download yahoo widgets in turn it allows you to put a ca lander right on your damn desktop.
14. Widgets Can't Be Placed on the Desktop
Oh contrare with a little elbow grease and simple hack you can put any widget you want on the desktop http://www.askdavetaylor.com/dashboard_widgets_on_my_mac_os_x_desktop.html
13. Inconsistent Use of Context Menus. Apple should fully enable context menus in Finder and other Apple software. We're not saying the Mac should rely solely on context menus in even tiny facets of the user interface -- that's a mistake Windows and third-party developers make on that platform.
Wait so you are saying apple should fully enable context menus or you are not saying the Mac should rely solely on context menu's? make up your mind
12. Documents and App Instances on the Dock
Umm what? every document window I've ever opened and minimized shows up in the dock what are you talking about? and if you are talking about tracking multiple open documents on the desktop that's what expose is for.
10. Accessing Applications
There are third party apps that let you access all of those programs you hardly use like Quicksilver or Dragthing - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"yeah it's easy when you know about the key command"
Granted, but Windows users also have to learn to use F2 if they want to use the keyboard to rename files. Both involve a learning process. Personally, I don't like using Enter to rename. I'd like Enter to launch the file instead. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Which one's better...? Depends on who you ask.
I've been using Vista for the last three months and I hate it.
OS X for me. - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I have the clock in my menubar configured to show the hours, minutes and secons as well as the day, date and month. I haven't installed anything extra, what's the problem?
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just hope they don't try to make spotlight perform the role of Quicksilver. I'm all for a tightly-knit and consistent user experience, so the widgets and spaces thing don't bother me that much, but Quicksilver is perfect and I don't want anyone to mess with it. Seriously, its the best thing thats ever happened to a GUI. If I wasn't already a mac user, I would switch just for that one utility.

In Windows, ctrl-X doesn't have this problem. The file isn't deleted as soon as you 'cut' it, unlike how the 'cut' command usually works. The file just gets greyed out and is only deleted from the original location if it is actually successfully moved. This is exactly the way that OS X should do it.

How about relaunching Finder? cmd+opt+esc > relaunch Finder"
This is slow, and results in the loss of any open Finder windows. - jnagel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I like how on digg anyone who likes Macs is automatically labeled a "fanboy" but windows and linux users aren't. Get over it people, an operating system is an operating system and you either like it or you don't like it. If you like Linux, that's great, Windows, great too, OS X, great. Arguing with someone about it is stupid. How about we just point out the things that we would like to see changed?
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Wow, these guys don't even know what Mac OS X is apparently. Complaining that iTunes has a different UI than the Finder isn't an OS problem, nor is the Mac keyboard (delete/backspace), or many other things on that list. Plus their "solutions" to these problems makes me damn glad they're not designers.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Ok, there is one thing about mac OS X that annoys the hell outta me. Making me eject my pen drive. In XP I could just rip that damn thing out whenever the hell I pleased, but OSX flips ***** when I take it out without ejecting it.
and add a preview of the damn pictures and videos in the icon. XP does it, so does Vista, why not OSX?
while I'm at it, make the viewer software in OSX work more like windows Picture and Fax viewer, where you can hit the next button and it finds the next picture or video in the folder of the picture being viewed.
Also, if I click on an icon, but just off of it, like in the area it would highlight if I clicked it once, actually click the icon, cause when you do that, its like you're clicking open desktop. - webmathwiz1, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18All vista is, is an inferior copy of OSX pasted onto a horrible windows core (registry).
- dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree with you 100% there.
- vince1731, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10This article seems like it was written by someone who bought a mac during lunch time and finally go to try after work and wrote a this article right after - oh wait, that's exactly what it is.
- Aleman360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The way it is now, you can either jam the Dock so full with program icons it's ridiculous or keep the Dock clean and then open a Finder window and drill down into the Applications folder to launch lesser-used apps."
I hit apple+spacebar to open up the Spotlight prompt and type part of the app name. Works really well. - Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"And as I predicted I'm getting dugg down just for pointing out that people that post anti-apple rhetoric get dugg down faster than you can say "alas poor Yorick" on threads like this."
I suspect you're getting dugg down because your comment was pointless and added nothing to the topic at hand. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What does that have to do with Dell?
- GreySpec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A MAC EXPERT was on the team for this one? Ya right, most of their complaints were out of utter ignorance of the OS. I have been a IBM user for 20 years, until one year ago i got fed up and switched to MAC. Let me blanket statement this article please:
15) (No date display): MYTH DEBUNKED, there IS an option to display the date along in big between the month and day, along with the time, even in a elegant desk calendar view, you can't have it on the menu bar, but you can make it as translucent as you want to not get in the way.
14) (Widgets on desktop): This is cool, already coming
13) (Inconsistent contextual menus): Contextual menus??? sounds like some PC psychobable!
12) (Documents in the Dock): What is this a damn start button? HELL NO, the dock is for programs idiot! Mac is all about simplicity and uncluttered panes... remember: Keep It Simple Stupid?
11) (Managing window size): Again, K.I.S.S. The only reason you have so much control of windows sizing on PC's is becuase you constantly have to use them just to see anything on that ***** interface. One complaint i do have is about the little + button never seems to resize properly.
10) (Accessing applications): IDIOTS, have you ever heard of Spotlight? It works! its lightning fast (hence the name), so use it!
9) (Backspace or delete): As a PC user, i have grown accustomed to the backspace key, but the Fn+delete works just as easily. About the keyboard, again its all about not being cluttered... if you notice, the layout is so clean and straightforward... no wierd shaped keys or possitionings like on PC laptops, the arrowkeys somewhere, a different size... the F keys moved over, etc etc.
8) (Printer setup screens): This is just *****, NEXT
7) (Inconsistent user interface): Inconsistent??? Macs whole approach has always been the think DIFFERENT, be DIFFERENT... is it no surprise that their flagship software maintains its appeal? Its refreshing to see that Apple, unlike Microsoft doesn't conform to the same monotony of plain & drab PC windows interfaces
6) (Laptop screen dimming): MYTH DEBUNKED, all you have to do is adjust the Energy Saver "Put the display to sleep" bar to max. There is a direct relationship between how long you set it, and when it starts dimming. So if you set it to 1 hour, it will start diming at 15 minutes.
5) (Grab points for Column resizing): Again, KISS and avoid clutter!
4) (Automatic resizing of columns): NEXT
3) (Display bug in column view): It is a bug... I've since avoided that feature
2) (Cut files in the Finder): YES, please add more functionality to finder: IE: Cut/Drag/Drop etc
1) (Finder refresh): True, finder refresh is crappy - JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Their?
- dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4terrible article. atleast 1/3 of those complaints are wrong. it's like this guy has only been using os x for 5 minutes, and wrote an article about it
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Mac users are getting image and video thumbnailing in March"
This is partially incorrect. Mac's have image thumbnails currently. They can even be resized, unlike in Explorer. If I'm lyin' I'm dyin'. - cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"To each her own favorite way of working."
Is it just me, or does everyone seem to be using this nowadays? Someone needs to come up with a genderless word for a person fast, because the whole "her" thing is weird. It's just as bizarre as using "his." - digga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wow, that was really funny... *rolls eyes*
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Would everyone please stop making posts that say something stupid and end with "and if anyone diggs me down, they're a fanboy!"
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5that's COPY and paste, admirabumblebee. The issue is that we want to move things around, not make copies. It should be ctrl/cmd-X, then V, I use it constantly on Windows.
- Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am a mac user
that said, hitting enter to rename a file is idiotic. How is enter intuitive at all? Renaming a file is a far less common task than opening it, furthermore, when does pressing enter on anything rename something. It doesn't. Pressing enter, does, however "go" to something. In a URL for example.
Renaming a file is editing a file, and it should have a keyboard shortcut that is not enter. Enter should be used universally for "activating" something, not editing it. - andrewrchambers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3as I said in reply to your other post - its not the DAY of the week - its the DATE.
for me personally, I don't mind just clicking the time to find the date.
and... "mouth breathing dell lovers"? you sir, are an idiot. - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Windows beats Mac in built in games, but Linux whoops Microsoft's ass
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6dgh1973, it's an article about Apple in the Apple section. You should not be surprised to see people that use and like Apple products discussing it here. I'm more surprised by all the people that feel they have to come in here and bash people that like the product being discussed here.
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've been a mac user for 2 weeks, what is this guy moaning about!
It's simple Macs are different to PC's, deal with it. Renaming is as hard as selecting the file and pressing enter, so you gotta learn a few keyboard shortcuts boo hoo. - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6True, but you can still do it without installing anything and I do.

and no i wont email you.
the real michael bolton would be disappointed with you.... - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a HP Officejet d135 that was not recognized by OS X.
From what I can tell, OS X still comes with Gimp-Print 4.2.7 drivers from July of 2004 and Apple has not upgraded to Gutenprint (new name) 5.0.0 which was released in July of this year which I find to be odd because it's a free and easy upgrade for them to do and it adds support for many more printers including my d135.
