- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -1/+20wow that has to the most retarded comment I've read on digg in a long time
- 1nhuman, on 05/19/2009, -2/+18OS X has been out for how long? These commands hardly touch the surface. You're better of checking out sites like http://macosxhints.com.
- eegz, on 05/19/2009, -0/+10I have a small penis
- SteveMax, on 05/19/2009, -1/+8"lol" is bash's output when you pipe a delete command into an install command.
- billessig, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7And that's really saying something.
- borez, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7No supercharging going on with those hints really.
- mickeylaspalmas, on 05/19/2009, -1/+7contrary to what you may think, "lol" is not an argument. even when piping a delete command into an install command.
- AndrewWiggin, on 05/19/2009, -0/+6"supercharge" really is the wrong word
- anshuman, on 05/19/2009, -0/+6nope. not us osx86 users, we ***** love commands and scripting.
- digitalpencil, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5isn't this true of any command-line, or most system interfaces for that matter?
- Radan, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5Hell, if you really want some fun you should do a "sudo rm -Pr /". It may take some time, but it's way worth the wait.
- ba5e, on 05/19/2009, -3/+7sudo rm -r /
- falafelkiosken, on 05/19/2009, -4/+8tetris for Emacs? so they have finally made that app useful?
vim ftw - leamanc, on 05/19/2009, -1/+4None of these hints are particularly harmful. 90% of them are using the 'defaults' command to unlock hidden preferences. They can be easily removed or reset. In fact, I'd be surprised if they can't all be accomplished using TinkerTool.
Now, don't get drunk and practice with the Terminal. Back in the OS X 10.3 days, before OS X had more granular permissions (i.e., parental controls, limited accounts, etc.), I wanted to practice setting permissions on certain apps for the non-admin user so that they couldn't use them.
First, I backed up my home folder (which was named after my first name). Then I created a new user (with a shortname of my first initial and last name). I then copied all my stuff to the new user from backup. After drinking a few brewskies and playing around with this, I realized it was just too much of a PITA for an enterprise environment.
Removing accounts in OS X at this stage was also a terrible PITA...it took forever to delete the user data. So I removed the test account via System Prefs and told it not to delete the user data....I thought I'll just sudo rm -rf it in the Terminal! Well, in my drunken state, I put in the wrong name, and deleted my whole home folder...while logged in! This was actually pretty cool. Everything slowly disappeared, just leaving my Terminal window.
Thankfully, I had backed up before starting this drunken experimentation and was back up and running in an hour. And then I went to bed before I did any more damage. :-) - Misterberu, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3I second what Raptor007 says
Add this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/492 ...
...and all your troubles will go away! - krishnakashyapa, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3I too own a mac with leopard..
Its really great pleasure to spend some useful and and also some lazy time.. - wesw02, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3This list is "okay". Tetris in emacs is kind of cool, aside from that it's nothing I haven't seen on top 10 lists before.
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -0/+3but this is a top 15 list
new and improved - fabriciom, on 05/19/2009, -1/+4What didnt like that one? Try this other cool one:
sudo cat /dev/random > /dev/disk*
I gots lots more if you like! - johnalan, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Ahh me also friend, now to skull mountain for feast and celebration!
- woofers07, on 05/19/2009, -0/+310 of those were for dock and dashboard preferences. Dashboard sucks.
- rubixcubez, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2dugg for honesty.
- wesw02, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2hehe, I stand corrected :)
- ophello, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2And you have idiot friends. Time to meet new people, loser.
- rylin, on 05/19/2009, -1/+3Wow, tech radar!
Seems these tips.. flew under your radar?
Really, this is nothing new, and it's certainly not "supercharging" anything.
Welcome to two days after Leopard was released, I guess? - Raptor007, on 05/19/2009, -1/+3Try the AutoPager extension for Firefox. The entire list appears as one page to me!
- overridemymind, on 05/19/2009, -1/+3That command's a dick move, bro. Huuuge dick move.
I feel sorry for anyone that falls for that. That'd be proof positive that if you don't know what you're doing in an terminal window, you shouldn't BE in a terminal window. - ancalagon73, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Great command for newbies to run. Just be sure not to add the -i argument. Too naggy.
- cynicalbrit94, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2In case you are interested, you can replace "tetris" with "dunnet" or "snake" or "doctor". The last one is kind of a joke.
- leamanc, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2@j4200: Heaven forbid I break netiquette of replying to first post. Jebus will surely strike me down in my sleep tonight. Get over it.
It *was* related to pacman122's post. He advised caution using the Terminal. I gave an example of when caution is needed: after drinking eight Heinekens. So it is related. I'm inclined to think you are the idiot for not realizing the relevance of my reply to the post in question. If you didn't enjoy my story, just digg me down and move on instead of competing for the Douchebag of the Day Award.
Would I have not been an idiot if I posted it at the bottom, and then truly unrelated to the thread? Are there strict rules that ALL POSTS on Digg must be directly related to the topic on hand? I thought the purpose of social interaction on the web was to relay stories...maybe get a little off-topic, but talk generally about what everyone else is talking about, and relate life experiences. Since this concept has eluded you, I can only assume you have no life, and thus no experiences to share. - krwlngindark, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1LOL @ GAYOSX. IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE GAY DOESN'T EVEN SOUND LIKE MAC!
- johnalan, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1your mother must be proud :)
- erictheodore, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1everything old
- wesw02, on 05/19/2009, -3/+4hope you don't catch a virus ;)
- TheCheeks, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1Nothing new.
- digitalpencil, on 05/19/2009, -2/+3you are what gives the rest of a bad name.
- aserer511, on 05/19/2009, -2/+3" Time was that Mac users would stare blankly or visibly shudder when the words 'command line interface' were uttered. "
time is still now; i know people with macs who don't even know what an operating system is - ophello, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1There still should be an uprising against ***** Digg submissions that hit the front page. This kind of poison makes my life less bearable.
- ROFLance, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1The only command that would possibly enhance your mac's performance is making the Dock 2D... if you're on a mac mini or sum'n.
- overridemymind, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Lol. Nice one (never saw that one before, but EPIC nonetheless).
- CallMeMatt, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1sudo rm -rf /
- erictheodore, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1i see what you did there
- Radan, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1@WakeRider:
The -P will overwrite every file three times in order to make it impossible to recover them. - ofenza, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Thanks but i use safari. That extension wouldn't make the list suck less, anyway.
- ophello, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1yeah. totally. like, i am so in love with you. I mean your comment.
- krwlngindark, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1I just want to live.
- WakeRider, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1@Radan: What does the -P switch do? I typed man rm to look up the switches and couldn't find it in the manual pages.
