You can also say that Bill is just a figure head for Microsoft and he is retiring soon where as Steve is busy monitoring the projects of at least 3 large corporations. - ooooo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow.... you need to just shut up about stuff you dont know about.
Steve does donate more but he's not like "HEY EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME!!! OVER HERE!!!" like bill gates does making sure the papers have it the next day.
my hero's woz... hes all bout the lil kids - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"What about the fact that Steve Jobs gives nothing, or virtually nothing, to charity?" - SixFeetUnder
Why to the Apple bashers keep spouting this? How in the world do you know what Jobs donates? Have you seen his tax returns? And what if he doesn't? Gates was just recently "born again" with his charitable work, and coincidentally it came at a time when Microsoft was getting hammered in the press for their illegal business practices. Cause and effect? Maybe, maybe not. Who cares?
I'm not saying I don't admire Gates for what he's doing, but all this "Jobs is a selfish jerk, Gates is a saint" crap from the trolls recently is just weak. And Jobs gave me an operating system that doesn't suck, so that's a pretty big "good deed" in my book.
Gates may be donating billions, but I donate a pretty good chunk of my income every year (income I need much more than Gates does) and no one is bowing to me (and rightfully so). Ever hear the story of the Widow's Mite? - jobenly, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1111. Steve Jobs's employees report that a pleasant rosy scent often wafts from the company bathroom that Jobs's frequents.

Yawn.. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I don't see you quitting your job, selling your house, and joining the salvation army or peace corps." - Jozer99
I also don't have a $20 million (or whatever) house on the lake (which, as far as I know, Gates still lives in). And my wife and young kids may not appreciate my joining the Peace Corps or going without food.
Hey, like I said, I admire Gates for what he's doing, but he could give away 99.999% of his fortune and still have far, far more than most of us here. He'll never miss a meal or sleep on the cold ground. Which is fine; no one expects him to. But like I implied earlier, the money I donate every year has more negative impact on my family's quality of life than Bill's donations have on his. Fact. But no one is going to write a magazine article about it.
"Also, I would love to see the evidence you have that his dedication to a life of charity is a simple publicity stunt for the sake of Microsoft."
I didn't say I had any evidence of it. I didn't even say I truly believed it. The timing could be considered suspicious, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Ultimately, the noble distribution of his massive wealth will always be tarnished by the weasel-ish way he acquired it. - scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know dude(ss)... sure he had some creepy business practices, but when all is said and done, he'll be able to point at diseases he cured and lives he truly saved. The truly amazing thing isn't that he's giving his money away, but that he's giving it away thoughtfully. Any tool can buy the piece of paper with your name on it at Arby's for a buck, but to say that you funded the cure of river blindness is... well... pretty ***** cool.
BTW: There is -nothing- wrong with enjoying the product of your success. If you spend every waking hour thinking about work and your company which gainfully employs thousands of people, you deserve the best of what life has to offer. It's a lot of work keeping a company of that size functioning/profitable. If you had a windfall of $100 million dollars, I don't think anyone would fault you for spending some of it on things that would make you happy/comfortable (after taxes, of course). - scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gates is to be commended for doing what he does with his money, but beyond that, no comment needs to be made. What Jobs does or doesn't do with his money is none of our business. If you think that billions of dollars needs to be raised and given away, go to business school and do it yourself.
The fact that you people are calling them "Bill" and "Steve" without the last name just oozes fanboy. Really... you people are giving me douche-chills. - ohmar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4
In case any of you were wondering:
1. dush: The way a ***** spells douche
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dush
I would sat that applies to samsong.
Idiot. - Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Good point, excuse me while I go and post "Who gives a *****" on every story I don't digg.
In future I will value mature opinions such as that. - scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry, headline should have read:
10 Things You Never Knew About Steve Jobs, Unless You Have a Creepy Obsession - sup34dog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I may hate Apple, but you're still a douche.
- SixFeetUnder, on 10/12/2007, -16/+15What about the fact that Steve Jobs gives nothing, or virtually nothing, to charity? Whereas Bill Gates has made tremendous accomplishments in the charity world, founding the wealthiest charity for one.
I only bring up Gates as a comparison; it seems that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are polar beings in the populaces eyes. - DaBrainiac, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5They forgot one:
At birth his first words were, "We've got some great stuff for you this evening. Now let's take a brief look at Apple Retail..." - Dislexus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah that one went down quick.
- shootdashit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3some tyler durden in that last one.
- ztirffritz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Reed actually changed their alum requirements so that they could include Jobs. His son's middle name is Reed.
- gormenghast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2#12. ???
- Bortoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Marked as inaccurate since I knew half that stuff.
- DerekDenton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I went to Reed College. That Jobs only went for one or two semesters doesn't keep Reed from counting him as an alum in its recruiting materials. Funny stuff. That he hung out for an additional year in the dormitories after dropping out is VERY Reed in the 1970s.
Re: his lack of visible charitable donations - he's only accruing his first few billions. Give a brother a break! - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@Quix
Not very convincing. Bill is donating not only his entire fortune to charity (lots now, the rest in his will, his family only gets several million), but also leaving the corporate world to work exclusively for charity. I don't see you quitting your job, selling your house, and joining the salvation army or peace corps. Also, I would love to see the evidence you have that his dedication to a life of charity is a simple publicity stunt for the sake of Microsoft.
I haven't personally looked over Steve Job's tax returns, but lots of organizations have. In fact, there are publicly available lists of the charitable donations of billionaires and CEOs of major corporations. Steve Jobs is not on any of these lists, meaning he donates less money than the minimum amount required for publication on the lists. However, he IS on the list of major political contributors. - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"Tim Berners-Lee, considered a father of the Wold Wide Web, built the very first web server on a NeXT computer, and id Software founder John Carmack programmed Doom and Wolfenstein 3D on NeXT boxes."
But Steve gave us the Web and Wolfenstein.
What more could the world need of him? - 8bit_Hero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+213. He constantly has his ***** in an apple fanboy's mouth.

- waveman216, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2#11. Articles on Steve Jobs can have a tendency to crash sites...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3just because he doesn't like it doesn't mean he's not free to voice his opinion
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I probably shouldn't admit this, but I knew most of those things. Then again, I did read "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs". Great book, btw.
- gormenghast, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Great post!
- gconeen, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5yeah, what a dushbag
