- philomatic, on 10/21/2009, -2/+19Rather have a battery that lasts 8 hrs for a few years, than a swappable one that lasts 3 hrs
- lukas88, on 10/21/2009, -2/+16I have never bought an apple product and even I am glad they are around. Apple's design in hardware has pushed the industry, serving as healthy competition for the products that I do buy.
- serif69, on 10/21/2009, -3/+1611. People on digg can't appreciate a new product if they have an illogical hatred of the company that makes said product
- seltaeb4, on 10/21/2009, -5/+15If you want to know what other tech companies will be shipping in the next 5-10 years, look at the products Apple ships today.
- inactive, on 10/21/2009, -4/+11Apple lost the battle? Are you sure you're using the right metaphor there? I think *we* lost that battle.
- shapiro500, on 10/21/2009, -2/+7Can someone explain something to me? Why is the Mac Pro still so expensive?
iMac 27": 2.66 ghz x 4, 4gb ram, 1TB hd, $1999
Mac Pro: 2.66 ghz x 4, 3gb ram, 640GB hd, $2499
So the iMac is just as fast, has a 27 inch screen, and you can get more memory and HD space for 500 bucks less. What am I missing? - sputnikv, on 10/21/2009, -2/+7you can take out the battery in the new unibody notebooks, you just have to unscrew the bottom panel
- sdphost, on 10/21/2009, -3/+8I usually buy a new laptop by the time the battery dies anyway...
- Gee1004, on 10/21/2009, -5/+10So does your mom
- Wilddigi, on 10/21/2009, -6/+11So is Windows 7
- inactive, on 10/21/2009, -2/+6If you don't know how to take the bottom case apart and put in a replacement battery then you're retarded. It also allows for the user to add RAM, and replace the Hard Drive without voiding the warranty.
It's going to last you over 2 years with heavy use, and a 7 hour life on a charge. Like a phone, plug it in when you get home.
Regarding your phone. All you had to do is hold the home key and the power button until it restarts.
Idiot. A call to Apple or a quick search on the web would have gotten you that answer. - Wilddigi, on 10/21/2009, -4/+8Your comment sucks
- Macintoshreader, on 10/21/2009, -1/+4No. Just a typical Apple hater.
Almost no Windows users are like him. - york2600, on 10/21/2009, -1/+4Not sure what you're smoking, but I'm still going strong at 804 charges on pretty old Apple battery technology
- philomatic, on 10/21/2009, -1/+4iMac's can now be used as external monitors!
- jbella, on 10/21/2009, -0/+3It seems like a pretty reasonable design decision to me.
THink about it.. most people only have 1 battery. A smaller population of road warriors might carry two to get extra battery life.. and a very small minority have 3 or more. By putting in a single higher capacity battery, it's like giving everyone 2 batteries (except they dont have to swap them for extra life) and if the battery life claims hold true, then it's a great bargain. After 3 years, you can take your computer to the Apple store, and buy a new battery.
This design might not be for everyone.. but logically speaking, it seems like a very good solution for the majority of Apple's customers. - targetpro, on 10/21/2009, -2/+5You can still replace the battery. Only now, you have to unscrew the laptop to do so, and to keep your warranty, they want their 'authorized' folks to do it. It's a trade-off. Slimmer, more functional design or easy access tabs to pop it out on the fly. Big deal. /s
- soopafly, on 10/21/2009, -2/+5Typical comment from a Windows user.
- Zippo, on 10/21/2009, -0/+3you don't even need to unscrew the laptop. The bottom comes off with a latch... pull a tab, unplug the battery, and away you go.
Honestly, if it means a bigger battery with more life? Go for it, Apple. - inactive, on 10/21/2009, -3/+5I must admit I can't tell which part you're being sarcastic about there.
- Zippo, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2You do realize that MacBooks have a matte finish option, right?
- Zippo, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2more than 3 hours? I've got a relatively new battery (62 cycles) in my MacBook Pro (late 2006 model)... With WiFi and general web browsing, I'll probably get 2-2.5 hours, max. If I throw open a video or anything else that uses a fair bit of CPU, I'll be lucky to get an hour.
The idea of being able to run for 7-8 hours, or even 4-5, makes me jealous. - shapiro500, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2No, i mean the Mac Pro. The gargantuan tower that weighs like 60 pounds.
- dawnraid101, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2Hmm my macBook (feb 08) lasts about 2.5 -3.5
- kestermatsumoto, on 10/21/2009, -4/+6These comments suck
- Phych, on 10/21/2009, -2/+4I hate glossy screens.
- Nothlit, on 10/21/2009, -1/+3It is removable. It just requires a screwdriver.
- inactive, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1I don't really like the non-user-replaceable battery idea. I've often carried an extra battery with me if I know I'm going to be out doing work of some kind and can't stay still long enough to plug in.
That having been said, it's not non-replaceable. It's just not something the user can do (normally). The battery appears to last a whole lot longer than the old model, which I like. We also don't know yet how long the battery lasts before it craps out. A year? Two? Three? And how much hassle is it to replace? Do I just take it to an Apple store for half an hour?
Just to say it again: I don't like being unable to replace my own battery, but I'm waiting to see how big of a thing this issue really is. - fdelucio, on 10/21/2009, -1/+2i hate your comment.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 10/21/2009, -2/+3Apple batteries last for way more than 3 hrs.
What are you smoking?
And more importantly, why aren't you sharing? - Macintoshreader, on 10/21/2009, -1/+2The new Apple Remote sucks. The design is awkward, and looks like a Chinese rip-off of an iPod nano.
Prefer my white Apple Remote more.
At least the new Magic Mouse seems like a step forward. I had a Mighty Mouse and it died in only 6 months and it got way too dusty. Happy owner of a Logitech mouse for two years, but may buy this one. - CJ117, on 10/21/2009, -2/+2More like "10 Things You Won't Give A ***** About Apple's New Crap"
- tadekatma108, on 11/02/2009, -0/+0I have no PC and no MAC because I don't have money, I go to the lan houses, cyber coffee, but I like the iMAC, when I have earn money a buy one iMAC
- inactive, on 10/21/2009, -1/+1No, she does blow though (I've heard). Overpriced at $10.00
- digtastic, on 10/21/2009, -1/+1it doesn't fit on your lap.
- targetpro, on 10/21/2009, -1/+1*corrected: Little deal.
- inactive, on 10/21/2009, -6/+6Seriously. Are we in grade 2 here or what?
- lead2thehead, on 10/21/2009, -1/+1Yeah, that will be really useful when I'm on a plane and I want to swap my dead battery for the fully charged one in my bag.
- majortom1981, on 10/21/2009, -2/+2I looked on apple and you cant get a core i5 machine for $1500 i see only the 27inch for $1999 with a core i5.
- kdrummer, on 10/22/2009, -0/+0There may not be as much of a massive difference right now, but generally speaking the Mac Pro towers have a much better front side buss than other machines and higher cache. You are also comparing Xeon processors (which are used in data crunching servers) to the i7(which seems to be a bit of a beast, too). Don't forget that the Mac Pro can be expanded to support internal hardware RAID and can drive something like 8 monitors if you really wanted to buy the extra video cards and displays. The sky is the limit with the Mac Pro, but the iMac is what it is.
The differences in processor specs are usually subtle, but important and not many consumers would actually appreciate them. It's kind of why they are in the "pro" lineup. If you're crunching HD video or mixing down audio tracks when time = money, then you need more power. If you're checking email and digg, you can still get by with a Power PC mac mini. - lead2thehead, on 10/21/2009, -1/+1Wow... two whole years? Well good for you! I've had to replace the battery in my powerbook twice now and I'm about to get a third because it won't hold a charge for more than 30 minutes. Lithium batteries can only be charged a finite number of times before they stop working. At 804 charges, your battery is now pasts it's expected life span. But luckily for you, you can just buy a new one and install it yourself when the old one dies. With this new design, you'd have to ship it off to Apple for two weeks while they replace it.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 10/21/2009, -4/+4Too zealous?
- lukas88, on 10/21/2009, -3/+2I'd say that it is overpriced by a smaller margin than it was. If you consider that the hardware is typically premium quality, you are not dealing with a huge markup. If you enjoy the software (not that I do), it is probably a cost effective purchase these days.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 10/21/2009, -2/+1Well, apple was obviously doing it for its consumers at the expense of them losing some money.
- Khast, on 10/21/2009, -3/+2Yeah...hold the power button... I HELD THE DAMN BUTTON FOR 5 ***** MINUTES...stuck on the damn Apple logo until the battery finally died. Mind you, that once I plugged it in afterword it worked fine after that....but still.
... The Windows based laptop I was referring to is 8 years old, battery still holds 90% of it's charge. And I can put a 2nd battery in the DVD slot tripling the battery life (It runs parallel). If I have a 3rd battery, I can hot swap if needed.
There are times that pulling the ***** battery out of the electronic devices serves a purpose. Whether it be to fix problems with software, or to increase productivity time. - issachar, on 10/21/2009, -2/+1I'd love to see the explanation why these superior batteries can't be made self-contained and user replaceable. Until I do, I'm going to continue to be suspicious that they're simply designed that way because early obsolescence also fits the marketing plan.
- roxgod666, on 10/21/2009, -7/+6Not if you:
1. Are a student
2. Are a subscriber of MSDN
3. Pre-ordered it for $50
4. Buy the OEM copy
5. Buy a new computer that comes with it
6. Created a launch party
7. Get it from work
Yeah, many ways to get it cheap. If somebody complains, it's their fault. - llamabox, on 10/21/2009, -8/+612. Every new item comes with a vile of Steve Job's sperm.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 10/21/2009, -9/+6It's a shame apple has lost the battle of swap-able batteries. Makes a computer more worth the price when you can keep using its hardware longer.
- issachar, on 10/21/2009, -4/+1I don't. I use my hardware longer than that. Therefore Macs are now out of the question.
This battery move is simply a transparent move by apple to encourage obsolescence and get their customers to replace computers more than they otherwise might. Which is fine from Apple's perspective, but it makes it rather obvious that "green" is little more than marketing. To be fair, I think this is typical of most companies, it's hardly just Apple.
It's true of people for that matter. People choose the money type of "green" over the earth kind most of the time. -
