- Bifurcati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can highly recommend Flip4Mac - particularly now it's free! It's one of the few shareware programs that I've bought (along with Sidetrack from Raging Menace) and it was really worth the money. Of course, now I'm pissed that I didn't wait a little longer...!
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm getting ready to make the switch. This list is awesome.
- smoothmomma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good list. All but two were new to me. The first two are promising... wish they were freeware though.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2++digg for Growl. (I'm a Growl developer. ;)

Actual obscure mac apps. Check 'em out. - compwizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have a pre-2005 iBook or Powerbook, there is another great scrolling driver for your trackpad, it's called iScroll. It gives two-finger scrolling functionality to pre-2005 apple laptops. I love it!

>>1. Inquisitor - welcome to google toolbar...
>not at all, how did you come up with that idea?
have you ever used the google toolbar? it also autocompletes your search terms, i do not see what the tangible difference is....plus it does not cost 5Euros
>
>>2. Saft. - why not use the real thing and use the fox? flashblock, foxpose, exif readers, etc...
>firefox is a complete drag on the mac which i am sure you are aware of, camino camitools would be the better >combination
maybe if you are still running a G3...i will admit camino launches faster than the fox, sure, but camitools is sorely lacking in the extension department
>
>>3. Flip4Mac - mplayer/vlc give me better results
>i don't really like flip4mac either but mplayer and vlc hardly play any of the wmv's i throw them
maybe you should update to the current version...i've only had a few problems with obscure files
>
>>6. Chax - adium is vastly superior IMHO, but if you hate security and freedom, go ahead and use iChat
>adium is also a lot more tricky to setup and unless you spend ages of your life setting it up it's ugly
when did dragging-and-dropping become "tricky to setup?" - also, i think it looks a hell of a lot better than ichat or chax...not as sexy as gaim, but close enough
>
>>8. Witch - um...expose already does that guy
>true
at least we agree on something - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was about to pass this over (considering myself a leet Mac geek), and I've heard of everything on the list... except Witch.
It was well worth it for that one program! - pgiessel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@f00xx0riz3r
"On linux it's normally 0." LOL, *SO* not true. Linux is technically just a kernel, so with linux to even get a shell, you are technically installing a program that doesn't come with it. If you want X-windows, there is at *LEAST* two more programs that "don't come with it" (XFree86 or X.org and a window manager). - moofdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm really suprised he left off Tunebounce. It's great for helping you find music that you might like
- NAPO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0applejack and witch (especially witch) are excellent programs, that make life easier on my mac. i would like to try inquisitor but its shareware, and dont want to be hit with nags if i dont think its worth my money. good list overall. digg.
- grumpymeerkat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i haven't been able to get enough of voodoopad lately: http://flyingmeat.com/voodoopad/
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Applejack is great. I have had it for some time now and although I have only needed it once so far it is really usefull, especially good to give to someone who is not very tech savy because, even though all of it's functions can be done in single user mode without it, it is easy to use and automated.
- SenyorDrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0let me add "spark" to the list of must-have items
- irie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good list, you call yourself "TheMacsican"
- itchyfeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Inquisitor is not shareware, it requires you to make a donation -before- you download it, which, by definition is Commercial software. The developer is quite arrogant to adopt this payment model.
- pretentious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Inquisitor: http://www.inquisitorx.com/safari/
Looks like it would be a kick ass Firefox extension... - Shatstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of this stuff is shareware, but other than that 'tis awesome +Digg
- Maskawanian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cuisine is a great program: http://triagegroup.org/cuisine/
- Ultim8Fury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sidetrack is great.
Growl is awesome.
Flip4Mac meh it's getting better.
saft is a good safari plugin, crash protection of tabs is a really great feature.
all in all +digg. - diggm0nkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Instead of using Chax... Id probably suggest http://www.adiumx.com ... awesome customizable chat program
- cheftony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a newer Mac user... I found the list helpful...actually downloaded two of the "already must have"...thanks!!
- revgriddler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only 1 new to me, aren't I with it? Mostly good programs, worth checking out. I bit the bullet and tried Inquisitor, stupid "donation" payment plan and all... It's alright on broadband connection, but a nuisance on dial-up.
- tfaz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg effect has taken down the good folks over at Growl. Great little app(s), when you can get them working properly...
- aliensporebomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whatsize - tells you where all of your storage is getting eaten up.
I found this useful because I had over a gigabyte of old e-mail
files that I thought I'd deleted that I was able to remove due to this app.
Also a large file I'd placed on a webserver for a friend and
promptly forgot about let me wipe off 5 GB so a good app. - sendmesomejunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the list. Some of these are new to me.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If he's listing Inquisitor and saft, he can't leave out Pithhelmet...
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good list, thought I don't use many of those.
My must have list:
Fire - Multiprotocol chat
NewsFire - RSSReader
Azureus - Argh Matey!
Thunderbird - E-mail
Poisoned - 5 protocol p2p in a single GUI
iStumbler - Looks for open Wi-Fi
Transmit - Best GUI FTP program EVAR!
Stuffit Deluxe - A still necessary evil in the Mac world
Camino - Firefox's faster Aqua rendered cousin
Xupport - A Swiss army knife mac utility for the power user. Incredibly useful.
Path Finder - A Finder on steroids. Includes built in CLI.
Data Rescue II - The last line of defense for data recovery. And it works, well.
VLC - Play all the media Quicktime can't for free.
Toast - The Nero of OS X, only (much) better
FoldersSynchronizer - Good general backup/cloning/sync utility.
LaunchBar - Hard to explain... think Spotlight + CLI + File Navigation. BEST PROGRAM EVER :D
MacTheRipper - Argh Matey!
xPad - Neat notepad utility
UnRarX - When Stuffit isn't enough - itchyfeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@combatcupcake : go home.. Sometimes when a page opens a link as a new window it's a pain in the ass, and user has no choice.. To drag it to your main safari window (where all your other tabs are living) is actually very handy.
Firefox is cool, but is most definitely not as fast as Safari. - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ whitesanjuro
1. Inquisitor - welcome to google toolbar...
not at all, how did you come up with that idea?
2. Saft. - why not use the real thing and use the fox? flashblock, foxpose, exif readers, etc...
firefox is a complete drag on the mac which i am sure you are aware of, camino + camitools would be the better combination
3. Flip4Mac - mplayer/vlc give me better results
i don't really like flip4mac either but mplayer and vlc hardly play any of the wmv's i throw them
6. Chax - adium is vastly superior IMHO, but if you hate security and freedom, go ahead and use iChat
adium is also a lot more tricky to setup and unless you spend ages of your life setting it up it's ugly
8. Witch - um...expose already does that guy
true - kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0um... I didn't know mplayer can play wmv files.
- Beautyon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://python.net/~gherman/RegexPlor.html
for those of you who want to tes out your regular expressions interactively. - irie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Oh ya- and appzapper should also be on there.
Sorry 'bout the spam..... - enzomedici, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0
info.xhead is an obscure personal secure database that's great and easy to use.
http://www.xheadsoftware.com/info_xhead.asp
Enzo - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Don't forget FruitMenu!!
http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/fruitmenu/
It lets you actually make the Apple menu that should have been, with custom cascading menus and such. Cheap proggie, easy to use. You can even make the menu OS9 style.
Call me crazy but I don't think the Dock is an efficient way to browse programs, especially if you have way more programs than can fit in the Dock. Browsing to the Applications folder in Finder is also inefficient. Cascading menus is the way to go. This is one user interface concept Windows and Linux (Gnome/KDE) actually trump Mac OS X with. - whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+01. Inquisitor - welcome to google toolbar...
2. Saft. - why not use the real thing and use the fox? flashblock, foxpose, exif readers, etc...
3. Flip4Mac - mplayer/vlc give me better results
6. Chax - adium is vastly superior IMHO, but if you hate security and freedom, go ahead and use iChat
8. Witch - um...expose already does that guy - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Flip4Mac is going to become less obscure, since m$ has abandoned WiMP for OS X and now directs you to download F4M.
I agree that Sidetrack is awesome.
Also: Be sure to get FastAndSlow, AppZapper, and Monolingual. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sorry for the run on sentence.
- combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"My favorite addition: the ability to drag tabs from one window to another."
Um, the point of tabs is so you're NOT dealing with multiple windows!
Those safari plugins kinda suck as Firefox not only does the same and better/more, but is overall a far superior browser.
Wow, these apps really do suck, not 1 of them is even remotely useful. - dan.grover, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I hate these lists. They always have the exact same items on them. :(
- f00xx0riz3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+010 programs everyone should have that doesnt come with os? God. Apple just gotta suck.
On windows I install around 5 utils after clean install. On linux it's normally 0. - NetSliderX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Fooey! Very little (if any!!) Universal support. No Digg.
- boardingrhino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0do we really have to replace Microsoft's "s" will a dollar sign? they are all greedy bastards as are you and I. Its called capitalism buddy
- Eldoo77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Wee need the "digg - Mac" frontpage for Digg stories that are relevant (to the 95%+ of us that aren't Mac fanboys!)
- dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0enough with these damn lists. It's all user opinon, so they are quite stupid and useless. If you are going to make them, keep them to yourself or your readers only.
- Thundercat1971, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Actually, I should be without all 10 of them. But that's because I don't have a Mac. But that's because I like my computers to actually do something useful.

What is Digg?
