- Chuck0078, on 10/12/2007, -10/+56i have to say that is about the best pros& cons mac story ive read, because most are not really true to form, but i have to agre woth about 95% of what i read.... very nice pros and cons
- KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Netburnr, the thing about booting into Windows to play the games, though, is that it's still Windows. It's simply running on Mac Hardware. This article refers to the operating systems themselves, not the hardware, so using Boot Camp as a point is basically null. And as a simple 10-item list, it's great. It never said that it was going to list all the pros and cons of either side, simply the 10.
As for the article itself though, I'm pretty pleased with it. It's nice to see something truthful, informative, and unbiased about both sides for once. Great stuff. - Shayer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30run>msconfig>start up> uncheck stuff you don't want.
42 levels deep? I think not. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31"Quix, its generally not anti-mac sentiment, but rather anti-annoying-mac-fanboy sentiment." - zybch
Actually, this is the common claim everyone loves to repeat but I find this an exaggeration to say the least. When I read a Windows digg, I may find an obnoxious comment or two like "Get a Mac," or "Macs don't get viruses." And of course the standard anti-Microsoft spiels (which, BTW, comes from all users, including Mac, Windows, and Linux users). That's about it.
Read a Mac digg and you'll see juvenile comments like "Macs are for fags," "stupid Mac fanboys dreaming about sucking Steve Jobs' c*ck," "Crapples suck," etc. Yeah, mindless dreck straight from a Friday night LAN party. This perception that Mac users are elitist and obnoxious is largely a myth. You confuse defensiveness with elitism. You'll find MUCH more mudslinging and ignorance coming from the anti-Apple contingent. It's a fact. Some diggers have made a hobby out of fouling every Apple digg they can find with their steaming piles of nonsense. So who are the "fanboys?"
Most Mac users I know have used Windows extensively too (like I have), and can criticize from experience. Most Mac haters you see in the threads obviously know nothing about the platform, yet throw their ignorant rants around anyway. Now THAT'S annoying. - nufoto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Very well written with out any of the typical anti MS flame.
Worth the read if you are a current Microsoft customer. One thing though if you are looking for Apple games/software I suggest trying a local Apple retailer or Apple store for a better selection. - cday, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32"5) Some software just not available on Mac (hello MSN Messenger with video)."
.............................................
Just curious, but why is this listed under "Cons"? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30Quix, its generally not anti-mac sentiment, but rather anti-annoying-mac-fanboy sentiment.
You know the type, the kind of irrational mac fanboy who will religiously digg every roughlydrafted.com 'article' and who spams EVERY windows specific story with stupid "I don't have this prob coz I use a mac" comments and who are already trashing the Zune (for example) even though the damn thing hasn't been released.
I don't own a mac, nor see myself doing so in the near future, but I certainly don't hate the PCs apple puts out, just their cool aid drinking rabid fanboys that give apple a bad name. - flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I'm a designer, $300 jeans? 50, but not $300. thats an iPod.
- vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I *love* how he charged his client $949aud just to test a website in safari. That's highly ineffecient, but not the point of the article :D.
- dzarkw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I disagree about the CMD/Control keyes. Command is in a much more convenient spot - you can use your thumb to push it instead of your pinky, it's much more comfortable.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I tried OS X for the first time today, and the main thing I liked was the unix-ness of it. Once you open an xterm, you can actually run vim and emacs out of the box. That was impressive. Bash is nice.
What does Vista have for a shell? - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I'm a designer, I don't even wear jeans, but I do shop at the Gap, and it is completely true that designers will pay more attention to you if you use a Mac.
- L4stM4nSt4nding, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The author should try using Media Center before commenting on it. Media Center (even moreso on Vista) is amazing.
- L4stM4nSt4nding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12There is no such thing as a free lunch.
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Actually, _douche_bag, he billed the client for it.
Meaning they bought it for him.
kthx, gg. - ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I run linux now, but I ran Windows for a looooooooooong time as admin without getting any viruses or spyware. How? I'm not a ***** retard...
- healy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"6. Pro - Graphic Designers will talk to you"
What a tool. I like Macs, I own five of them, but Mac users who make statements like that make me want to smack them upside the head. The list was going fine until he had to write that lame reason. - Chuck0078, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I'm not new at all to macs, but i said its the best pros and cons review, because that's my opinion, i read plenty before, but i like this one , because its exactly what i think, and its not the same ole things you see all the time from regular pros and cons articles on macs
- funbags, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I just wanted to comment to say nice written article.

Changing DNS servers is an inredible rare task and in most cases would NOT be undertaken by an average computer user, otherwise anyone who has even the smallest experience could either find it themselves or be able to follow instructions easily enough.
XP: My Computer > Network Connections > Right click on a connection; choose properties > Click on TCP-IP; choose properties > Change DNS server - Done.
I've walked my grandma through harder steps/tasks on a phone. - KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8No no no.
These jeans ARE the iPod. - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7that's funny. i've been using macs for 7 years now and i've always been frustrated with the home/end keys not doing what they're supposed in all apps. i didn't know about cmd-left, cmd-right. thanks for the tip!
- bking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's a con to pretty much anybody in Latin America, or otherwise outside the USA.
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10A client bought him a mac - just to test a ***** website?
/heads over to w3 and learns everything about web standards etc. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Pure semantics.
They bought him a mac. Whether that was a listed expense or hidden under 'test equipment' or whatever, they still bought it for him! - FluxHarmonic, on 10/12/2007, -14/+21Apple did!
=D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Funny. I've been using PCs for a long time too (DOS 3+ etc) as well as Macs (OS 9 on), but I much prefer the Win/XP GUI paradigms; I still hate OSX for the lack of maximized windows and a focus on the current app. Instead you have to have a bunch of windows floating everywhere.
That is to say, as it stands right now, the GUI is highly subjective. Macs do a lot of good decisions - ie, top menu - but also do a lot of crap that end up being worse on several accounts. - herschelaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9pretty good article, well written
clinton, try pressing ctrl+alt+command+8 and you might like your mac a little more. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6> erkokite suggests: "Whoa! That seems just a bit dishonest, no?"
It depends upon the situation and how it was presented to the client. If you are fudging the truth and taking advantage of a client then yes, such behavior would be very dishonest. But I once had a client finance a small four-machine render farm for me because they needed the work done quickly and, considering my hourly rate (which is probably on par for those folks who do what I do), my having direct and speedy access to the machines actually ended up saving them more than just money: it let them meet their deadline. - libbydib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"You can drag text off of a web-page and onto the desktop. A text file is automatically created with the stuff you dragged."
Works in Gnome too! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thats about my only gripe in the story (that and the bit about 99% of apple stuff being perfect and flawless, macbook moo/overheating/discoloring etc anyone)
While not as bad as the standard mac fanboy "zune is so bad and it is awful and it is not as good as iPod" even though the thing hasn't even been released, you still can't make any legitimate comparisons if you haven't used BOTH systems. - KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+715 years of Windows hotkey muscle memory was easily overthrown by my 2 years of Mac usage. Heck, the first week got rid of it.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Totally agree. I do believe that this should become another 'con'. Media Center is amazing.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yep, it's definitely a good article. The only issue I have is with the games being a downside. Any current Mac can run Windows just fine, so if you really want to play games, you can just boot into Windows and play them there. I'll run the same as any regular PC with the same specs. The restart shouldn't even take much longer than it would take to start up an Xbox.
- EgoDemens, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7And windows!
- funbags, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7you dont wear versace jeans?
- ryannerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I took a unix class at University about 7 years ago. Is it a requirement that unix programmers have half moon glasses, are bald except for a long pony tail in the back?
- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16Pro:
1) No need to worry about viruses or adware.
2) Nice suite of integrated applications (iLife).
3) Nicely designed hardware.
4) Shareware applications tend to be better designed.
5) An intelligently designed OS (adding a network laser printer is a breeze).
Cons:
1) Accessories tend to be more expensive (hello TV tuners!).
2) Not compatible with a LOT of PC hardware.
3) Safari & FireFox on Mac don't work for all websites.
4) Command key is in an awkward position. Control key on Windows makes more sense.
5) Some software just not available on Mac (hello MSN Messenger with video). - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Have you actually used PSH? It combines the power of bash with the total and complete awesomeness that is the .NET framework. It's pretty damn slick and gives any unix environment a run for its money.
- sdittmar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Front row is NOT a pro? If he finds the time to use Media Center then theres no way he can support Front Row as a pro...the rest of the article was pretty close to true IMO.
I have a Media Center and have seen my friend's mac mini running front row...front row has horrible support for the remote, the guide required intermediary steps to do common tasks and my friend couldnt even download a guide that was accurate for his service area so alot of channels and show info is completely incorrect.
It has a lot of gotchas like having to set the fast forward speed to one speed instead of being able to cycle through them all in sequence... when you hit fast forward it moves at the speed you chose only. On Media Center you hit fast forward and it goes at 2x, hit it again and it moves at 4x, then 8x. Sounds small but it makes a huge difference when sometimes you want to go forward 60 seconds and other times 60 minutes! My friend had to go re-set his fast forward speed to a higher rate so we could go from the start of a show 45 minutes in to where we were when front row stopped it from playing for no reason at all, then set it back to a slower one again.
Front row may have a chance to get better but it seems like they still have a TON of stuff planned as software updates.. media center is already there and beyond. Plus media center has a lot of great plugins like GameEx which allow you to use Media Center as an Arcade of numerous emulators ontop of just the normal PVR-ing, and plugins for my XM radio over the web, etc etc.
The price tag isnt worth thinking about anyway since Vista will include it in all versions. Pretty soon every windows machine will have Media Center for free with their new computer.
Media Center is a PRO compared to Front Row, without a doubt, even for the XP version at ~$100. - Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@superkendall
When is the last time you just upgraded a Mac cpu for a hundred or so? Don't kid yourself, it might be possible, but for either OS reasons or hardware reasons Mac users hardly ever upgrade more then a hard drive or ram.
Does that really matter. Some people like to fiddle with their computers rather then just turn it on and get a desktop. - erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"But I got away with billing the client for it, so why not?"
Whoa! That seems just a bit dishonest, no? - Subcide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Virtually none of these articles mentions that your years of Windows hotkey muscle memory is rendered useless by OSX's different key combos for copy, cut, paste, and undo.
That was the biggest annoyance for me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I haven't tried Windows Media Centre Edition, but I can't imagine that it could be this slick."
Oh. My. God. How totally objective.
Let me tell you buddy, I use it all the time, and it ***** all over Macs half-assed solution. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -22/+25"A 10 item list won't even get close to covering all of the pros and cons of the two operating systems."
Very true, but a nice 10-item list nonetheless.
Welcome to your better computing life, Clinton. My home PC is but a bitter memory (sadly, I still have to use XP at my day job). Brace yourself, however. There's an awful lot of irrational anti-Mac hostility out there (especially on Digg). You'll see plenty of ignorant rants thrown your way. Being a Mac user requires growing thicker skin. Just smile and nod. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The command key is way more convenient than the default control because you don't have to move your hands to hit it at all, it's just right there.
On Windows and Linux I use Caps lock as a control key and the problem's solved though. Using your left pinky is just as good as the left thumb. - clintonforbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was completely honest with them about the purchase. Our original agreement did not cover compatibility with any Mac browser. They asked for it at the last minute, so I charged them for it. I told them I was buying the cheapest Mac available that would allow me to test the site, which is what I did. No complaints from anyone.
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, I hate that feature. I don't need to drag n drop text selections around. I want to paste it somewhere or refine the selection!!
If I've overshot a text selection by a few characters at the start, I just want to reselect the damn thing, not drop it onto my desktop! - tomarocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Getting along with designers at work is great if you're gay, but for us straight guys, Macs work really good to pick up chicks at Starbucks.
- tdhurst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I never understood why MSN messenger was so damn popular...there are lots of much better choices.
