- shyguy01, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31Pretty much the same as other freeware lists, but still useful for new mac users
- riverrunner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Everything was looking fine until number 10 - stuffit expander! horrible POS.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Videolan (VLC) works great for me, it now even plays WMV files. As a matter of a fact, I think it plays almost everything now but .rm (real media) videos.. I haven't had one single problem with it on Mac OSX or Windows XP/Vista/2003.
- deanau, on 10/12/2007, -14/+26Man that kid isn't gonna get laid until he's at least 35.
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18VLC: Way too buggy for my tastes on OS X. I've found MPlayer to be worlds better.
NetNewsWire Lite: Too restricted. I understand that it's a free version, but quite frankly, I've found Vienna to be just as good, if not better, than even the full version of this app, and it's free and open source.
Q: I haven't gotten around to testing this one out, but I do know that you can currently get the Mac version of VMWare Fusion for free, and it does a pretty decent job.
Superduper!: The free version is alright, but I would prefer Carbon Copy Cloner since it's far more fully-featured (and free).
Stuffit Expander: Ugh, why? TheUnarchiver is all you will ever need, and it's worlds better. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15freeware/donationware alternatives:

I didn't know about (I recently switched to Mac) before.
To be perfectly honest, I find digg comments on such articles even
more informative than the article itself (ex: I didn't know about TheUnarchiver
until now. Uninstalled StuffIt Expander right away.) - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I also think "Burn" needs to be added to that list. Can do just about everything Toast can do, for free.
http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/ - Dwarfthemike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@actorboy
the newest version of VLC has the quicktime overlay control thingy you mentioned as is far more stable and less buggy that the previous version. i suggest trying it out again. :D - jodokast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The Unarchiver > StuffIt
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There are much better ones... The Unarchiver is my personal favorite. You can get it here ( http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/ ), but for some reason the page isn't working for me right now.
I also use Xee from the same developer... great app. - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Another good free app is Font Explorer X ( http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX ). It manages fonts similar to the way iTunes manages music, and also allows you to browse, purchase and download additional fonts from Linotype's online store.
- michnaugh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Vienna, in my opinion, is much better than NetNewsWire. I'm surprised I don't see Vienna as often as I do other RSS Readers on the weekly digg must have free os x apps list.
http://www.opencommunity.co.uk/vienna2.php - devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6that's a good program, but people aren't going to click if they don't know what you're advertising there.
- sven007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@deanau,
Should have checked the site before posting that. looks like he's an avid digger, and this is now his #1 pick

Digg me down if you want, i'm just spreading respect over the Internet - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You, on the other hand, I will block.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why do people keep recommending Transmission? That crap is banned at every decent tracker.
- FyreFiend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@TimmyGUNZ
Stuffit is slow and its proprietary format has long outlived its usefulness. Built into Mac OS X is the ability to open zip, gzip, bzip2, and tar files by double clicking on them. Stuffit was pretty good back in the day but let the old dog die. - a0me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not mentioning that Transmission still doesn't support (AFAIK) indispensable features:
- Encryption
- Prioritization
- Selective Downloading
Support for SOCKS outgoing connections and DHT wouldn't hurt either...
Don't know if XTorrent will fix those but I seriously doubt it.
On Mac OS X, I still haven't found a replacement for Azureus. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here's my list of not essential but occasionally useful utilities:
- Capture Me: For taking screenshots of the DVD Player
- coconutIdentityCard: Tells you when and where your Mac and manufactured.
- coconutBattery: Tells you the condition and age of your laptop battery.
- Disk Inventory X: Gives a graphical disk usage picture, similar to SequoiaView on Windows
- FileXaminer: Inspect and change file type/creator, resource, and meta data.
- iStumbler: Wifi network detection
- Lingon: Control which services and daemons are launched at startup and login
- memtest: RAM tester
- Monolingual: Remove non-English resources to save disk space
- Ordine: Network scanner
- Pacifist: Inspect/download files from .pkg installers.
- Service Scrubber: Remove menu items, change keyboard shortcut in the Services menu.
- Fugu: SFTP/SSH tool
- Aquamacs Emacs - djjuice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8wow another 10 apps i should have, by now according to digg thats around 100 apps or so that i must or should have. I think by now its just recycling old lists.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I use Vienna, and I agree that it's pretty awesome.
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4how many top 10 lists do we need
and 90% of them have the same products. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why are you using stuffit to expand zips? OS X has unzipping built into the finder (BOMArchiveHelper).
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Agreed that VLC is a bit flakey... I use it, but only when quicktime (with flip4mac and perian) can't handle a file.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"About Azureus though, I still don't understand what's with all the "clunky and slow" talk."
If you're running anything less than 1 GB of RAM on your system, you're screwed with Azureus. I had 512 MB and couldn't have anything else really running without my system being painfully slow. The recent update fixed that a slight bit, but still was a problem. I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to 1 GB and it's been working a lot better, but even still, while I'm not having any slow downs now, it's still taking a ***** load more memory up than Transmission ever does.
Unfortunately, the little piggy doesn't like Transmission, so I'm stuck using Azureus until they allow it. - xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Don't forget my freeware web developer app Serverskine.
http://www.serverskine.com/ - feelingkettle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Firehed, Xtorrent uses Transmission's engine (libtransmission), so they'd get the same performance speeds. I can't stand Xtorrent because the developer is basically charging for Transmission, except he added a prettier and more restrictive UI. Plus it's not open source, since he's selling it. I'll stick with Transmission.
- polyphonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4have you tried it? bc you should.
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yep, got it running on my macbook under parallels beta 3120, xp home to be exact. The new coherence mode is sweet. My xp home image has a modified uxtheme.dll, so I can run unsigned visual styles. Have one that makes the windows look almost exactly like a mac. So I can run IE7, windowed, and it looks like a native os x app (well, sort of).
I also have xp installed on my home PC, before you call fanboy or some other such BS.
The only difference is that I'm not a rabid fanatic for any particular platform, I think they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
Good luck on your whole windows proselytizing there, bub. - a0me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to admit my lack of knowledge about Transmission's history.
When I switched to Mac I looked for the closest thing to µTorrent
Mac OS X had to offer, and feature-wise Azureus was the only
one I could find.
About Azureus though, I still don't understand what's with all the
"clunky and slow" talk. I'd agree that it doesn't look great but it's
easy to use and plenty fast (at least on my recently purchased
iMac).
Now if µTorrent was ported to the Mac, I wouldn't hesitate for a
second. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FEX is a lfeesaver, after using ATM, Suitcase, Fontagent, and some less 'reputable' alternatives, FINALLY one app does it right, and it's free! Makes you wonder what the boys at Extensis have been up to all these years.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's high time it was updated then.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't care what Transmission has or will have until it is unbanned from the trackers. Saying to use a nightly is stupid, when it is STILL banned on every good tracker. If the main developer on the transmission boards hadn't been such a dick about the issue this problem probably wouldn't exist. Unfortunately pissing off one of the biggest private trackers around isn't a good move if you want people to use your client.
- n3il89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3just a quick factual inaccuracy in the article...flip4mac was not acquired by microsoft
microsoft just provides bandwidth for it and gives flip4mac money to make it free. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Gotta say I've never seen what's so great about Quicksilver.
- VicTheKnife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3haven't I seen this post before...a few times?
- iheartbeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't know why someone would mod you down. Jesus, it's freeware people. It's not like xeeton is trying to make money off a blog, or shareware.
Thanks for the post. Serverskine looks very interesting, I'm looking forward to checking it out. - canon66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This one was worth it just for Q. I didn't know there was a nice OS X port of qemu like that. Definitely giving it a shot.
- onestep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We've seen these all before.
This is a better list... IMO. Try this instead.
http://www.thinkmac.net/blog/archives/switchers-guide-to-mac-os-x-software-part-2.html - VANOS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Every month a "new" list comes out. What they do is take the same apps, scramble the order up a little, maybe add a word or two to the description, install wordpress, change the default header, and immediately submit to digg.
... and strangely enough, it's dugg up like we've never seen it or something.
I think a great feature on digg would be categories of stuff that can be voted on... a permanent and cookie-controlled vote list of items that would allow digg users to TRULY rate things like software, hardware, gear, etc. that are not news related. That way, we could log into the "digg lists" section and just find out what the community feels are the best of the best. Kevin, let's see some of that action! - feelingkettle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Transmission 0.7 will have a fix for the problem that led to some trackers banning it. Try a recent nightly build. http://chucker.mystfans.com/opensource/transmission/
Good thing too, Transmission is easily the best OS X bittorrent client out there, even considering the shareware ones. - gertikus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This one is a pretty good list too, also dugg a while back.
http://www.macrecon.com/the-ultimate-mac-software-list/ - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://seashore.sourceforge.net/
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My thoughts exactly. I switched to Xtorrent (which is going to be paid but cheap eventually, but *well* worth it, xtorrentp2p.com) and haven't looked back. I've never seen torrents start faster, or stay downloading faster. It's even had pretty good luck at school where they've done their best to block all bit-torrent, where most other Mac clients had no luck at all. The integrated searching is awesome, once you replace the totally legal Google and Yahoo! with your favorite tracker search links (ex http://thepiratebay.org/search.php?q=%@). Made by the same guys who wrote Newsfire. Only thing is that there doesn't seem to be support for encrypted traffic yet, but in honesty it hasn't been a problem for me.
I'd like to throw ImageWell on to the list, too. Great for those little quick image tweaks and then you can one-click send them to local folders, FTP, whatever (and, as I just found out, have it put the link, complete with tags of choice, onto the clipboard). - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iStumbler? Nice app for simply checking what networks are there, but if you want a serious app, KisMac - http://kismac.de - it's a full on passive stumbler and mapping app, lots of fun.
- attention, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"folderglance" needs to be taken into consideration
gotta have "shiira" too - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe Mac users refer to that as iLife
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3MonkeyFarts,
you are the first macuser (besides me) to mention VLC being buggy. I always read such glowing reviews/comments about it, so I always download the latest versions..but it always seems a bit flaky with the movies i try, esp. when I try fast forwarding, etc.. Of course, I'm willing to admit that it could just be the movies I try that are the problem :p -
