http://media.xiinet.com/music-browser/view.php?file=Nintendo%20Entertainment%20System/Super%20Mario%20Bros/1-03_underwater.mp3 - InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Having a headphone wire will be slightly problematic then, unless you stick your head in the bag. Then everything will be fine.
- iwannagofast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29The ipod explodes and you loose a limb
- supersloth3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29That's pretty cool especially the next time im hunting 30 foot screaming mega-squids in the Bermuda Triangle. I need my music to get in the mood for my daily life.
- merkle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19only good use for this: listening to the Mario Brothers underwater theme while actually underwater.
- danobrien23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17after 3 meters pressure isn't increased that greatly.....so i'm assuming the Elmer's glue inside the shuffle starts to come undone
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yes.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12You can buy them with it.
RTFA - notthesame, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Its not "100% waterproof", that is impossible. Its water resistant (until 10ft). Watches aren't waterproof either, they are water resistant.
- macbwizard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10While this is pretty cool, it would be way cheaper to just get a waterproof case.
- InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you are at the ocean, One word. Salt. Provided you go swimming with the ocean fishes.
(damn you for changing your comment) - gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Hell you can even wear it the shower... assuming you can find something to, uh, clip it to."
- Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I knew i should've waited... :)... i can sing with the fishies..

This has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen... listen to an Ipod Underwater?? With what earphones will you be doing that sir? An Ipod doesn't have enough juice to power any earphones capable of displacing water. Also, if the earphones were water tight you wouldn't be able to hear the music well at all because of the horrible air to water sound transmission barriers. Ok, maybe good if you are drunk and a friend pushes you in a pool or are on like a rafting trip etc.. but swimming listening to music without some sort of diving bell... WRONG
-----
There is this strategy that you might find useful, it is called Reading The Article. This is for swimmers, not divers, as is so stated in the article, so relax. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5 by iwannagofast 2 hours ago
The ipod explodes and you loose a limb
-------
Things tend to implode not explode under those conditions. - Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6sorry about that... i remembered the salt as well...i dugg you up bro... ;)
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+510ft? You could make a waterproof case with duct-tape and ziplock bag that would work that well.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There's seemingly some demand, or it wouldn't have been made.. I'd guess people who swim (not dive) a lot, people who are on/in boats/kayaks a lot, life-guards and similar would find it useful not to have to worry about their MP3 player dying if it gets wet.
- Ben - xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@themacthinker:
Seeing as think is in your name, think before you post. Why did you spam your (ugly as *****-- Engraving? what the ***** were you thinking?) blog on digg? Because of doing such a stupid thing, I now have to go spam your blog. See you in a few minutes. - xDFuNK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish my IEM's were waterproof, i have a feeling one day they are gonna break from sweating while i run
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Water proof is used to things that can be completely submersed. Water resistant means that something can get rained on.
So, yes, they are perfectly correct in their usage. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And the unpack-aging, disassembly, re-assembly, testing, quality control, repackaging, warehousing, advertising, web site, customer service, returns and warrantees.
But yeah, besides that stuff it's a lot.
Why don't you do it yourself. - niotv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Swimmers, be careful clipping it to your speedo.
- uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This should be useful when I start producing 10 feet of sweat.
- TheFoundry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Lose*
- Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That joke should read: "Will it die?"
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It might work well for surfing.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow you're right! You don't see a use, so there must be no demand! /sarcasm
- cyranthus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2awesome! because i always wanted to listen to music underwater!
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Cool but pretty useless to ordinary people who dont plan on chasing the loch ness monster.
- 3vno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So you can't go to the deep end of the pool??
- drmobutu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As a lap swimmer, I have been waiting for something like this for quite a while.
The problem I see with these is that the drag from the water will tend to pull out the earbuds during lap swimming...it looks like the buds pictured don't have a mechanism to keep them in place, other than the gasket.
Also, it's expensive. I bet Apple could just manufacture the thing to be waterproof in the first place, at little additional cost. And make some better waterproof earbuds, too. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The flash-drive has no battery in it, and I assume you didn't have it plugged into a laptop at the time.. Most electronic devices are water-reliant when their powered-off - The problem occurs when there's power flowing though it (Short-circuits and such).
There's no (obvious) reason you couldn't submerge a PC, dry it and power it back on without breaking it..
The modifications will be to stop water getting in it at all, so you can use it underwater.
- Ben - theblindman2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, your USB drive likely didn't have a battery that was being discharged when submersed.
Water (which is of course conductive) causes circuits to fry themselves, basically like filling the board inside with low grade solder. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For the "little additional cost", how many people use their iPod under-water? £0.01 extra for every single device made adds up quickly. Since it's such a small number of who'd use it underwater, water-proofing it in other ways (Like cases, sealable plastic bags, etc) makes more sense..
- Ben - salinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would totally listen to Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" underwater..
- liuite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i would imagine this to be nothing more than encapsulating the inside of the case with high viscosity silicone resin...high sticker price for so little resin
- zeek741852, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great so now i wont even be able to communicate in the pool
- jahue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone wonder if the shuffle is already waterproof to ten foot? I have a flash drive that has been to the bottom of the ocean (100' ) with me (accidentally) and it works just fine. Just wondering are they modifying it? That would be the ultimate scam!
Jahue - rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4From the makers of the waterproof ipod. Coming Soon
in ear ipod so you can ignore what your wife is saying. - Frost9999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2...or just going for a run when it's raining.
- jahue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know the principles of circuitry and I have had to clean laptops that had spills on them ( the worst slushy ) while on, but its possible that a low voltage battery would not do much harm if any. And no the flash drive wasn't powered or plugged in.
- Ephraim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to own a Swimman MP3 player before it got lost. I swim very vigourous laps, and the headphones never came out. They also sounded really good, and have a secondary benefit of acting as ear-plugs. I don't know anything about this waterproofed iPod, but I can vouch for the Swimman headphones, they are perfect for lap swimmers.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The best use I can think of for an audio device for diving would be one that tells you that it is time to get your ass top-side, and helps time your decompression steps. Otherwise, idling away the hour(s) while at depth listening to soothing music is a potential risk.
Significant risk. People die all the time because they loose track of time. - Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not willing to test it out but my E3Cs look like they might actually be waterproof and they seal in the ear canal well.
- starguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Water proof my ass. More like Water Resist. 10ft does not anything water proof make:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Resistant_mark - Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I once spilled a massive cup of water on one of my consoles (while it was off). It was essentially completely submerged in water for a split second.
One week later I turned it on and it worked just fine. - jevidon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You can't scuba with it, but it'll clip onto the back of your googles just fine if you're a swimmer." Wonder if actually meant goggles?
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if they make no modifications it isn't a scam if they warrantee it to be submersible. Because for you to do that, you'd have to buy two iPods, which will cost you more.
- Frost9999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@truegodofwar - depends. In watch jargon then water-proof and water-resistant are terms that mean different things... but specific things. Sometime a couple/few decades ago watches used to say waterproof but it was deemed misguiding because in truth even the best watch will eventually succumb under enough pressure. So now watches are marked water-resistant and usually with a pressure or depth rating. Mine is rated water resistant until 300m depth... but beyond that it probably wont resist for long :-/ And before someone cries out about salt.. my watch is made of titanium :P
