- mobilehavoc, on 10/10/2007, -7/+70I think people are missing the point here. $100K to distribute software freely that they instead (if they end up selling it) could make literally MILLIONS of doesn't make any sense. Supposedly about 450,000 people signed up in advance for the unlock, so if they charge them each $30 (what they said might be the price - low end) you're looking at $13.5 MILLION just to start.
Do the math, $100k is nothing compared to the potential behind this thing for these folks. - tsunamisteve, on 10/10/2007, -2/+43The money is great and all but the software package just needs to touch a couple servers to make all the lawyers and money in the world useless against it. Welcome to economics 2.0 (beta, of course).
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -5/+36Why should Apple care? It's AT&T that lose out here. This might even lead to Apple selling more iPhones
- terradyn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32Yes, but think about it in terms of game theory. Since they now have to assume that the 3-4 other developers with software unlocks out there may be contemplating the 100k, their software would become useless if one of them accepted the offer. Some may be worried about the legal ramification so this would be a solution as well. The question now becomes who takes the offer first.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23I think its a bluff to be honest. But it still makes the plot interesting.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20It's amazing to see just how much people really hate AT&T...
- hellyes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17until that unlock software hits bittorrent
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20The interface and ease of use. Its unparalleled at the moment
- v0yeur, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17apparently Apple makes a percentage of AT&T contracts, so yes, this would hurt both.
- Ngai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10You've just solved the million dollar question!
- famousdave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Its also a cheese grater and portable shower.
- betterth, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I own an iphone and could not be happier. There is nothing on the market that is it's equal in my mind. I've used a lot of phones, and I've used a lot of new phones. I've tried the tmobile wings, the helio oceans, the treos, and the iPhone took top slot for me.
Nothing is as intuitive and intelligently layed out. I've always been frustrated by phones "Why is this menu so nested?!" "Why does it take seven clicks to get to SMS" etc etc. It's like those people who designed the phones never actually used them. - heysoos04, on 10/10/2007, -10/+18forget the iphone, i would rather just have an open-source based phone with a 3g connection, then i could listen to shoutcast stations in my car through aux, and never have to worry about downloading music..
- TheSolomon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I doubt anyone is confused by SirZRX's comment. I'm guessing SirZRX probably means the country with the name that actually includes the word "America." No need to get the names of continents involved, Mr. Anal Retentive. ;-)
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Not necessarily.
Amount apple lose from no contract < profit from selling iPhone to people who wouldn't buy them on ATandT - RadicalEdward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Your also forgetting that it's illegal to sell the software to unlock the iPhone. But it's legal to give it away since it's legal to unlock phones (atleast in the us) So they really can't sell $30 copies without getting sued, but if a 100k check were to end up in their mailbox and they ~accidentally~ emailed the only copy of the software to the check writer. well. thats hardly selling it. and no one has to know they actually got the money, whereas it's kind of hard to keep an order form secret and effective at the same time.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Either your musical tastes are very generic, or you havent listened to the radio in while.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+7I'm worried that you aren't joking.
- Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I was with AT&T/Cingular for five years before the iPhone. Five people in my family have iPhones with AT&T.
My wife switched to AT&T from US Cellular two months ago when she couldn't get coverage in Columbus, OH (where her Dad lives).
AT&T isn't for everyone. Neither, is the iPhone. We're good with them.
Good luck to everyone else and their never-ending pursuit of consumer satisfaction. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Take the money and run. Absolve themselves of any future legal hassles. Hmm, guaranteed $100k vs Vaporware $13M?
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If its just a small group of people working on it, and they dont release it for beta testing to anyone.. then how would it have made it to torrent sites?
big products get leaked because there are a lot of people behind them. - mcorto, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You forgot it's also a bottle opener and a razor.... I use it every morning, it works like a charm. ;) Seriously, this Phone has changed my life.
- streetstealth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4A shakily written post on a Blogspot blog with no credentials listed at all?
Real, for sure. - jebus123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Is it always going to be a phone or could becoming a car or a kitchen table be a possibility?
- slapded, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5so is that 100,000 going to cover your court costs when apple sues your ass?
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Ya, that dream phone would sure be sweet...
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And a hand grenade, don't forget that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Apple make a huge amount off the iPhone other than the excessive sale price. They will want the phone unlocked just as much as AT&T.
Funny that the iPhone is essentially DRM'ed. - mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why figure out something that they and everyone else knows wont happen.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It's a phone. Your phone is not brainwashing you. Please get a life.
- NJank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you'd have the same issue if you had a sweating problem, too...
- mglmouser, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I'm surprised this hasn't yet found it way on torrent sites.
Or perhaps it did—I didn't look for it nor hear about it. - LynchMOB, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8I have not read any of the articles about unlocking the iPhone, nor do I know anything about unlocking cell phones... BUT, cant Apple just release an update that breaks the unlock? As far as AT&T hitting the roof, yeah they will loose $$$$. Apple should welcome the unlock... they will sell more phones.
- TheYoshi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4People are really still asking this?!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3My thoughts as well. 100k CASH in hand looks a whole lot better than 13.4mil on paper.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It is a CELL PHONE. If you don't like it, don't buy it and just move on. You don't have to constantly be whining about how bad you think it is and how dumb people are for buying it. It just makes you look insecure and immature.
- SirZRX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2send it to me in mexico, americans laws here means ***** =D!!!!
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3just get a pocketpc or smartphone, and use gsplayer or similar. http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA032810/
- DaRanged, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The software unlock was verified by a number of people from different sites. Have you even followed any of the articles about this over the past week?
You are wrong (and/or employed by Apple/AT&T?) :-D - prisoner24601, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iPrisoner's Dilemma
- Ratking, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Does anyone get that this makes the software illegal? The software is 100% groovy-clean-legal so long as no one profits from it. Then it doesn't impact the sale of the actual product (offer competition to Apple, the manufacturer). By offering the cash prize, it's opening the door to someone shutting it down. It must be distributed as freeware.
- embraceware, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1$100,000 - hmm - last time I heard that figure it was from that crazy lady in the iPhone lineup: http://youtube.com/watch?v=NYBFY98lWcU
Wouldn't it be awesome if it was her? lol - m00gg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Did anyone catch this: "Of course, anyone can launch a Blogspot site announcing pretty much anything they'd like. " Click the link. I just about fell off my chair, pissed my pants, a tripped over the dogg all at the same time!
LOL
;-P - insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple is making enough on a 600 dollar device that costs 50 bucks to make. They will make way more if the iphone is unlocked.
- Codee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1LOL.
Someone is trying to sucker developers. "I must confirm that it works. OK"....... Bit Torrent. The end.
Gotta' love the iPhone. - dbz253, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1they could just counter sue. this is completely legal.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A open phone on the 700mhz spectrum would be great, but I'd be perfectly fine with just having internet over that. Imagine cheap, open internet wherever you go in the US.
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2To those mentioning percentage...
They make about 50% of the MSRP of the iphone ($250 or $300)
They get 10% of your phone bill.
To match the iphones profit in a 2 year span, you'd need to spend $104/month for them to catch up. More if you bought an 8GB. - fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Then you aren't the target market for the iPhone. Apple obviously didn't design the phone for everyone.
- TheSolomon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The pain Apple would feel compared to AT&T, when it comes to unlocking the iPhone, is similar to the difference between a person receiving a tiny skin scratch and a person getting a massive knife slice through the abdomen. Apple would be thinking "I wonder when I scraped my elbow," while AT&T would would be massively hemorrhaging and choking on its own blood--within the context of the Apple/AT&T partnership, of course.
Given the surge in sales of iPhones this would cause (for use by people without AT&T service), Apple might be nursing a slight elbow scratch, but they would also be sporting an earth-shatteringly massive erection at the same time--financially-speaking. ;-) -
