i'm a BIT TORn on the though of RENTing - Lindblom, on 02/22/2008, -7/+94Wish the next update will be about making iTunes better, not a new way for Apple to make money.
- keozen, on 02/22/2008, -3/+62Go to ebay (or wherever). Buy a USA itunes card that has a set amount of credit on it (I buy $50 ones). Go to itunes and change to the US store (combo box at the bottom). Click "Redeem" in the right hand menu at the top of the store and type details of the $ card you just bought. Put in a fake US billing address in (pop in the Whitehouse, or just go to any us company and put in their HQ address) and TA DA! You now have a US itunes account and can get all the cheap songs and rentals you want, all you'll need to do is add credit from the card things. There is a bit of a markup on them on ebay but you still end up getting things cheaper.
- wrboyce, on 02/22/2008, -10/+51Still no UK Rentals :-( *shakes fist*
- schizogony, on 02/22/2008, -0/+32Actually, I think he's trying to tell you that he downloads movies for free.
- NicP, on 02/22/2008, -1/+29Here in Aus we don't even have TV shows :(
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -2/+27Dugg you down in support of your cause.
- hdberk, on 02/22/2008, -1/+22I have a feeling that's exactly what it's going to be
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -7/+27I can't believe the amount of effort you are taking to do something such as this. 99% of people (rightly so) would just turn to BitTorrent to get their fix of whatever movie or TV show you are after. If you have do jump through that many hoops just to get it 'legally', ***** 'em - pirate it until they make it convenient for you. They don't deserve your business if they can't work out a reasonable service in your country.

edit: I French AIpLanes fly far. - counterplex, on 02/22/2008, -1/+16Well played sir!
- ApolloXLII, on 02/22/2008, -6/+20or i could just download it for free and keep it forever
...or not... i swear, i dont download media illegally. please, dont come after me! - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+14SILENCE. you fool
- vicious42, on 02/22/2008, -4/+17Better idea: Rent any DVD from your local Redbox (99 cents) a day and use DVD decoding software to rip the movie into an iPod-friendly format. Keep the movie file on your hard drive for as long as your conscience will allow.
- timusca, on 02/22/2008, -10/+21Let's hope hope the discounted movie rentals are decent films... instead of trying to push crap on us that no one has ever heard of.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -2/+13Yeah, I just download for "trial purposes" and always delete everything within 24 hours.
- solidus636, on 02/22/2008, -0/+11Yeah, they need to fix those bugs for the windows version.
I dunno why you got dugg down... - dbz253, on 02/22/2008, -1/+12there's no such thing as usenet. it's just a word to throw people off of the real deal that is kazaa...
- EggoTrip, on 02/22/2008, -3/+14I torrent just as much as the next guy, but I think appletv is great...for my parents. They were sick of dealing with netflix by mail and probably don't watch more than four movies a month. Appletv gave my parents instant grat for rentals through the system and streams of content from their pc. Personnaly, the 360 does the same thing for me but with a more crowded interface - but they don't need a large more expensive gaming system. I set up in their bedroom and living room full sets of cables so they could easily transport it. If I want them to watch something I've dowwnloaded I let visualhub do the batch encode and burn to DVD.
My two cents, but my other parent had an old xbox which is now an xbmc - thing is sweet for the cheap. - dext3r, on 02/22/2008, -0/+11We got the drift. Supposed to chastise the guy for a missing t? ***** hat.
- directive0, on 02/22/2008, -1/+11Thats the great thing about being a consumer; no one is holding a gun to your head!
- galore, on 02/22/2008, -1/+11Yeah, how can Apple start with a movie that won an academy award. So crappy. Should have used "Transformers" instead. LOL!
- ObtuseGoose, on 02/22/2008, -2/+12I can hardly wait to rent my 99¢ Adam Sandler Crapfest of the Week™
- Urkel, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8But AppleTV allows you to order on the couch like a fattard while Redbox requires you to actually move your body and waste precious energy.
- gordonf238, on 02/22/2008, -2/+10I've rented at least 20 movies since iTunes started offering movie rentals. My g/f and I watch them from our bed on my 24" LCD. Sure as heck beats having to need a cable box for on-demand movies, not to mention having to pay all the basic cable service fees.
- stackolee, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8Rentals are good and all but I want to know if Apple fixed the memory freeze problems of the previous version. Every time I install a new Itunes I end up removing it and just re-installing v7.43. In my experience that was the best version in terms of responsiveness....
- stilesja, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8Will probably be classics from the Library collection.
- Urkel, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7I'm a Mac and AppleTV user and on there iTunes video runs great. But on the 2 pc's (XP and Vista) video is unplayable. The files work in quicktime, gomplayer, vnc but in iTunes it's a choppy mess. The easy way out is to blame MS but it's been clear for years that the fault is in Apple's terrible iTunes for Windows releases.
- mikephimikephi, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8Be careful what you wish for. Apple might go and do an 'iMovie 08' on us - and then iTunes will just be a play button.
- yabos, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7It's the first ***** one they put up and you're already complaining? Not every movie is going to be for everyone.
- MacTyler, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8Yeah, um its called renting, and its been around for around 30 years.
- keozen, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6To be fair I did this at first so that I could buy Heroes on a season pass, that way when I got home from work on the given day it was already downloaded ready to stream to my TV. As soon as the NBC fiasco I did just start torrenting Heroes until they came out on DVD here. NBC, as you say, decided that they didn't need my business.
I still use it for the odd rental and tv show. - VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -3/+9Are you trying to tell me that buying movies on disc makes more sense than renting? If I buy a movie for $20-30, I'll watch it once, and then it will sit.... and sit.... and sit... on a shelf in my apartment taking up vital space. Do you know how many times I could rent that movie for the same price? Surely I'll never watch it that many times in my entire life. Buying it doesn't make any sense. Especially now that Netflix is doing an amazing job putting more and more content on their "Play Instantly" service.
I just think of Netflix as another of life's monthly bills. I pay it and then have access to whatever I want. If I ever stop paying, sure, I won't have anything solid to show for it, but the last thing I will feel is cheated. I'll never feel that I didn't get my money's worth for a couple hundred bucks a year. - bannonto, on 02/22/2008, -1/+7HAve you given the Apple TV a chance. The HD rentals actually look very good. You are right that they are not quite as good as BluRay, but much better than DVD. Also, not everyone has a BluRay player yet.
Sucks if you have a HdDVDV player though. - vatchea, on 02/22/2008, -1/+7they said the same thing about charging for mp3s, that turned out to work just fine.
- deadbaby, on 02/22/2008, -2/+8Doesn't matter what the bit rate is. The term "High definition" only refers to resolution It's a completely accurate use of the term.
- deadbaby, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5I don't really get the bitching over the 24 hour thing... Wouldn't an intelligent person just wait to rent the movie until they could clear a couple hours in their super busy and important life to actually watch it?
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5They should push indie films for $.99 ...im sure it'll get some more awareness around. Especially after what Juno pulled off lately.
- Urkel, on 02/22/2008, -1/+6I don't agree with "The Hours" as their choice of cheap movie. But famlily movies aren't the answer either. What family doesn't already own Incredibles or Lion King.
- P5ycHo, on 02/22/2008, -1/+6Create a paypal acount using an American address, register your own credit card on that account.
Now create a new iTunes account and use the paypal account for payments.
Now you have all the US content. - chicaneuk, on 02/22/2008, -2/+7> I can't believe the amount of effort you are taking to do something such as this.
Such a ***** comment.. really.. some people just prefer to play it by the book. What the ***** is so hard to understand about that?
You know i'm willing to give the TV/Movie companies a fair chance. I think folks such as yourself, daza, will find ANY justification to pirate the media no matter what the companies do.
I spoke to a friend of mine recently to extoll the virtues of the 4od and BBC iPlayer services here in the UK. He bemoaned that he couldn't get the content in HD so was still going to download it from BitTorrent. Well - here's an idea. Try watching it on time when it's ***** broadcast in the first place. If that doesn't work, record it onto a PVR or DVD recorder. Stop being a tight-ass and attempting to justify your lack of willingness to open up your wallet, as being the fault of the movie or TV companies.
Don't get me wrong - I think as consumers we get reamed up the ass with regards to our rights, but I think companies like the BBC who are actually trying (iPlayer rocks) deserve not to get ignored.
Media is far more accessible today than it has ever been yet people still bitch. Its pretty tragic to be honest. - LittleFishChan, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4If they priced movies like that more people would likely buy/rent them rather than download them. At least make a LITTLE bit of money off of them...
- bryanwebster, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5agreed, I did this as soon as movie rentals were available. £62.50 for $100
- darkmotion, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4So will that completely get around the credit card accredited paypal issue? I can't get an apple store account because I don't have a CC. Does ebay let you make a purchase of the iTunes cards with Paypal by itself?
- Rockout, on 02/22/2008, -3/+7Redbox is always 99 cents...
- mdc921, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4Actually they did start with something better... Breakfast at Tiffany's was the $.99 special last weekend.
- sagat, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4Not to mention a warrant for your arrest on charges of Fraud and offshore banking, but hey it's worth it to see Starship Troopers 2 for a mere 99c
- yabos, on 02/22/2008, -2/+6Wow, you're so ***** cheap you won't even spend 99 cents on a movie.
- inkpooldesign, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3closer, closer... goal: $20/month unlimited rentals please.
- hdberk, on 02/23/2008, -0/+3Teet Heat? wtf?
