This Week's Best Memes, Ranked
Here at Digg, we try our best to cover the most important and confounding memes that come across the timeline. But the web is littered with tons of great memes that never quite hit the mainstream, instead bouncing around the weird corners of Twitter or Reddit.
Enter: our recurring feature, Memes, Ranked, where we not only rank the funniest memes each week, we also keep a running top 10 of the best memes of 2019. Skip to that here.
For the week of July 1, we have a handful of contenders: Uninvited Ivanka, the #BottleCapChallenge and Gamer Girl Bath Water.
3. The #BottleCapChallenge
The meme: It took a few weeks, but this meme absolutely exploded. Essentially, it involves the "memer" kicking (or otherwise striking) a bottle cap clear off the top of a bottle. There are a lot of variations, and we already blogged up a few earlier this week. Thankfully, there are many, many more.
The examples:
Verdict: Good meme. A solid reminder that memes don't have to be laugh out loud funny to be fun to watch and repeat. This one loses points, however, for being stupid hard to replicate.
2. Uninvited Ivanka
The meme: Another meme we blogged about earlier this week. It's all explained in the original post, but the gist of it is as follows: at the G20 summit in Japan, Ivanka Trump was recorded trying to butt into a conversation between world leaders. It was quite cringe-inducing.
It was also captured on video:
From there, memers took the opportunity to meme their hearts out.
The examples:
Verdict: Fairly funny politics memes that are easily pegged to a news event while also being easy to replicate with a little light photo editing. Also, there's comedy in the concept of the first daughter overshadowing her father during the week of his favorite holiday.
1. For Sale: Gamer Girl Bath Water
The meme: Okay. Cosplayer and gaming influencer Belle Delphine1 grabbed headlines this week by selling an, uh, innovative new product. It's called GamerGirl Bath Water, it costs $30 per unit and it's labeled "not for drinking… only for sentimental purposes."
This is a weird, hilarious and true thing. And internet folks both in and out the gaming community took notice and made memes.
The examples:
Verdict: These memes are weird. They're also fairly gross. But both of these qualities are to their immense credit because they capture the extreme oddness of the 'net, the super strange people who occupy it and the weirdest ones of all: bizarro folks like you and me who gawk at it all happening, chuckling to ourselves all the while.
