This week, Greenland's ice melt reached new heights as the heatwave that battered Europe swept across the icy island. According to estimates, 11 billion tons of Greenland's ice melted on Thursday — equivalent to over 4 million Olympic swimming pools of water. Here's what that looked like on the ground in Greenland:

 

Greenland has reached temperatures more than 25 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than usual in recent days, while the longer-than-normal melting season has reportedly raised global sea levels by 0.5 mm.
