Finding Any Excuse

  • President Trump's lawyers reportedly shocked justices of the Supreme Court when they claimed that the smallest mistake or lie on citizenship documents were grounds for denaturalization. Trump's attorney, Robert A. Parker, argued that even if one failed to disclose a speeding violation that was past the statute of limitations — that would be grounds for stripping an immigrant of their citizenship. Justice Kennedy responded by saying, "your argument is demeaning the priceless value of citizenship. " The shocking statements came in arguments for Maslenjak v. United States, a case in which a woman lied about her husband's previous membership in a Bosnian Serb military unit.

How Many Health Care Bills Does It Take To Change A Lightbulb?

  • The new health care proposal supported by The Freedom Caucus is dividing the Republican party. While it's gotten The Freedom Caucus on board by moving the bill further right, moderate Republicans are not moved — and some like Mike Coffman are now moving away from the bill.
  • Democrats are not entertaining the possibility of a vote on health care anytime soon. Today, the Democratic whip of The House warned that Democrats would vote against the temporary spending bill, potentially shutting down the government, if Republicans intended to vote on a health care bill this week. A handful of Republicans typically oppose most spending bills because of the deficit.

Far From War

  • President Trump held a meeting for the entire Senate yesterday to brief them on North Korea, but the alarming move turned out to be a dud. Reportedly, the President talked about his strategy to use Chinese trade to pacify North Korea, and then turned the meeting over to Rex Tillerson and other cabinet members. After the meeting Senators from both sides of the aisle criticized the meeting, with Democrat Richard Blumenthal saying, "There was very little, if anything, new," and Republican Bob Corker saying "I'm not sure I would have done it," of the meeting.
  • Despite what seem like signals pointing away from an all out war, North Korea is keeping up its heavy rhetoric. On Thursday, it released a propaganda video online showing missiles bombing the White House and US aircraft carriers.

Free Trade Isn't Free

  • President Trump will not pull the US out of Nafta, our trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, after The White House says Trump spoke with each country's leaders about ways to renegotiate the deal. It was reported on Wednesday that President Trump was having an order drafted that would begin the process of pulling out of the agreement. Trump tweeted Thursday morning that each leader called him to make a deal.
  • Mexican President Mr. Pena Nieto responded that the two discussed a "shared objective to modernize" Nafta. Previously, the Mexican president has indicated that he is willing to walk away from Nafta if it isn't modernized in the near future. On Tuesday, Mexico's foreign minister said the country would prefer "to abandon the treaty than have a bad negotiation".

Trump's Tweets

After reports yesterday that President Trump was preparing to withdraw the US from Nafta, Trump tweeted this morning that he wouldn't withdraw thanks to calls from Canadian and Mexican leaders.

Trump then tweeted about Democrats' demands for what they want in exchange for passing the upcoming spending bill.
