Another night, another debate. Whether you're looking for Bernie's latest finger wag or Hillary's last "Star Wars" reference, Digg has you covered with all the highlights.
Hillary Won Twitter, And Bernie Won Google
In the battle for tweets, Hillary Clinton had a narrow win, but in terms of google searces, Bernie took the night. We'll let you decide which one matters more.
Bernie Got A Standing Ovation, And Hillary Felt Weird About It
After his closing statement, Bernie got a standing ovation from his supporters. All Hillary could do was smile and laugh.
The Cuba Question
Jorge Ramos asked the candidates about whether they would meet with dissidents in Cuba and the Castros. Hillary supported increased diplomatic action, but condemned the rule of the Castros:
"I do think that meeting with dissidents...is important...the Cuban people deserve to have their human rights upheld...I think both Castros have to be considered dictatorial and authoritarian because they're not chosen by the Cuban people."
Sanders gave a stronger stance, pushing to end the embargo with Cuba and normalize diplomatic relations.
"I think we have got to end the embargo...we should move to full and normalized relations with Cuba."
What's A Sandersnista?
The moderators then went on to show a video of Sanders praising the leader of the Sandinistas as well as Castro, both of whom are known for committing extensive human rights abuses. Sanders dodged the question, and probably for good reason, claiming:
"The key issue here was whether the United States should go around overthrowing small Latin American countries. I think that that was a mistake."
Hillary took the chance to go after Sanders' statements in the video, saying:
"I think in that same interview, he praised what he called the 'revolution of values' in Cuba, and talked about how people were working for the common good not for themselves ... I just couldn't disagree more. .. if the values are that you oppress people, you disappear, you imprison people, even kill people, for expressing their opinions ... that is not the kind of revolution of values that I ever want to see anywhere."
Bernie Tried To Interrupt Hillary, And She Gave Him A Taste Of His Own Medicine
In the last debate, Hillary Clinton tried to interrupt Bernie Sanders, and Sanders aggressively shut her down, starting a large conversation about whether or not his actions were sexist.
This time around, when Hillary was talking about climate change and Bernie tried to interrupt her, she came prepared.
Clinton And Sanders Agreed On Education, But Still Fought Over It
Bernie and Hillary actually mostly agreed on education being a reform priority in the next four years, but somehow they still found a way to fight. Hillary started by highlighting the good things in her plan:
"We're going to refinance everyone's student debt ... My plan for debt-free tuitions ... will eventually eliminate any student debt ... The government has to quit making money off of lending money to young people."
Bernie agreed, but went on to backhand Hillary, taking credit for the ideas in her plan.
Bernie Asked Hillary To Release The Wall Street Speeches Again!
When asked if there's a reason to believe that Hillary is hiding something in her Wall Street speeches, Sanders pointed to the money.
"There is a reason why Wall Street has contributed $15 million to [Hillary Clinton's] Super PAC."
Clinton pushed back, citing her early calls for Wall Street regulation, which Politifact rates as true. Then she went further, pointing to a Koch-funded ad for Bernie Sanders.
"The leaders of the fossil fuel industry, the Koch brothers, have just paid for an ad for Senator Sanders."
You can watch the Koch-funded ad below.
There Was A BENGHAZI Moment
To much booing from the audience, Jorge Ramos asked Hillary to respond to a video of one of the relatives of the 2012 attack the Benghazi diplomatic compound.
Despite constant criticism from conservative media on the topic, and recent criticism from The New York Times, Clinton stuck to her guns, calling the claims bogus.
Hillary Poked Holes In Trump's Wall
When asked about how Hillary's border policies would differ from Trump's wall, Hillary openly mocked Trump's fantasy:
"He's talking about a very tall wall, right, a beautiful tall wall, the most beautiful tall wall, better than the Great Wall of China that would run the entire border, that he would somehow magically get the Mexican government to pay for, and you know, it's just fantasy."
Hillary The Everywoman Made An Appearance
With Hillary Clinton's political experience, you'd think she's a natural. Apparently this isn't the case in her mind. In an odd claim, Hillary stated that she's no natural politician like Barack Obama or her husband. We're still not sure what this means or how it could be true.
The Auto Industry Bailout
Hillary attacked Bernie Sanders for voting against the bill that bailed out the auto industry, explaining that if everyone voted the way he did, the auto industry in America would be stripped.
Bernie fought back, saying that he voted against it because the bill in question was in fact tied to a Wall Street bailout, which he vehemently disagrees with.
Politifact maps out the whole drama, rating Hillary's critique as half-true.
Hillary Accused Bernie Of Supporting The Minutemen!
Remember the Minutemen, the vigilante group determined to patrol and enforce the US border with Mexico? Hillary Clinton certainly does.
In a battle over their voting record, Hillary Clinton accused Bernie Sanders of supporting the fringe group. Bernie furiously denied the claims, but as BuzzFeed reported last year, the Senator did indeed vote for an amendment that was supportive of the group.
Hillary And Bernie Care About The Children
Jorge Ramos pushed Hillary Clinton to promise that she won't deport children, quoting previous neutral stances she had given. Hillary equivocally promised that she would not deport children already here.
“I do not have the same policy as the current administration does...I would not deport children [who are already here]...I want to prioritize who will be deported...I want to see [children] on a path to citizenship."
When asked the same question, Bernie also made the promise:
"[President Obama] is wrong in this issue of deportation. I can make that promise [not to deport immigrants without criminal records]."
People Were Confused About Bernie's Suit
No one could figure out of Bernie's suit was black or brown. We'll let you figure this one out on your own.
Is Donald Trump A Racist?
When pushed to declare whether Donald Trump is a racist, Hillary Clinton took a strong stance against his rhetoric:
"There will be a lot of time to talk about him...I was the first one to call him out...I said basta...You don't make America great by getting rid of everything that made America great...I think it's un-American."
Bernie Sanders gave an equally strong response:
"The American people are never going to elect a president who insults Mexicans...Muslims...Women..."Nobody has ever asked me for MY birth certificate, maybe it has to do with the color of my skin."
The Emails Are Back!
Jorge Ramos pressed Hillary on her emails again, asking who authorized her email choices. Hillary responded with her usual talking points:
"it wasn't the best choice...it was not prohibited...my predecessors did the same thing...I did not send any emails...marked classified at the time...what you're talking about is retroactive classification."
Having already notably disavowed the attention paid to Hillary's emails, Sanders brushed them off once again:
"there is a process underway and the process will take its course...I'm going to focus on the issues facing the working families of this country."
Hillary Responded To Losing Michigan
Hillary initially dodged a question about losing in Michigan by highlighting her victory in Mississippi:
"I was pleased to get 100,000 more votes and more delegates."
Floridians Trust Sanders More, But That's About It
In a Washington Post-Univision poll taken ahead of the debate, Democratic likely voters in Florida put Sanders ahead of Clinton on trustworthiness, but Clinton won out on every other queried attribute including closeness on the issues, personality, electability and ability to bring change.
People Are Curious About That Weird Berning Feeling
Throughout the last week, search interest has been surging for Bernie Sanders. Can Sanders use tonight's debate to turn that curiosity into support?
How They Stood Going In
With primary season almost half way over, the moderate Hillary Clinton leads a tight race against the ultra-liberal Bernie Sanders.
While Hillary has a sizable lead, spectators have been consistently surprised by Bernie's staying power. The trend continued last night, as Hillary furthered her lead with an overwhelming victory in Mississippi that was overshadowed by a surprise Sanders victory in Michigan.
