- NeoHomer, on 07/02/2008, -49/+13I'd be more than angry having to work with a bunch of America haters as he does. PTSD makes a strong man stronger just as it makes a coward more of a coward. I should have a serious case of PTSD, but I use it to strengthen my resolve, not destroy it. It's all about choices. Cowards choose cowardly. Real men face it down and whip it into place.
- mentallyinhell, on 07/03/2008, -6/+25America haters? Has your vocabulary been trapped in the third grade?
- tjmb9, on 07/03/2008, -1/+14You certainly don't SOUND like an insane person...

- nblsavage, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Settle down Francis.
- richardstaboner, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4And by your logic, PTSD makes an angry hot-headed man even MORE ANGRY! Just what the world needs.
- Deanblackoak, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1What the hell are you on about?
- Ridgeliner7, on 07/02/2008, -11/+41McCain then collected himself and apologized for his initial reaction.
"I kind of reacted the way I did because I have a reluctance to talk about my experiences," he said, noting that he has huge admiration for the "heroes" who served with him in the POW camp and said the experience taught him to love the U.S. because he missed it so much.
"I am always reluctant to talk about these things," McCain said.
Asked about one of his former jailors from the notorious Hanoi Hilton who has now endorsed his candidacy for President, McCain chuckled.
"Yeah, I saw that," he said. "He also said that he and I used to have these nice, long philosophical chats. The ones that I recall is, confess or else."- MadKennyP, on 07/03/2008, -3/+19But McCain and his campaign have still found a way to remind voters with some regularity of his 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and his family's long tradition of military service.
On Wednesday, his campaign expanded the reach of his first major television ad of the general election campaign — a commercial where McCain speaks directly to the camera about being shot down in Vietnam and his years of captivity.- gn0stik, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2So he's not ever supposed to talk about one of the most trying moments of his life? Something that shaped him as the guy he is today? I'm not voting for the guy, but I find all this ***** pretty goddamn petty.
If you knew anything about the time he spent in that prison and circumstances under which he was held, when he could have gotten out after only 6 months....
He's a war hero. I don't like the guy himself that much, but he's a war hero. And he's allowed to talk about it.
He doesn't stand a chance in this election anyway, so I don't know why everyone is so harsh on the guy. - zelig, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1THINGS ABOUT MCCAIN YOU WILL NOT READ IN THINKPROGRESS AND HE WON'T TALK ABOUT:
Did you know McCain has raised seven children? Or that he adopted his two oldest sons as small boys (children from his wife's prior marriage)? Or that he has raised a Bangladeshi girl with severe health problems adopted from Mother Theresa's orphanage? Or that his own sons have served in the military, including in Iraq?
No.
- gn0stik, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2So he's not ever supposed to talk about one of the most trying moments of his life? Something that shaped him as the guy he is today? I'm not voting for the guy, but I find all this ***** pretty goddamn petty.
- BeefBaron, on 07/04/2008, -7/+30Just because someone gets captured doesn't make them a hero.
The definition of hero has become so lax that the politicians label every armed forces employee a hero.- Fullvinyl, on 07/04/2008, -6/+11I can sense a digging-down for this, but you're absolutely right. I'm sorry, but the dickweed MP blocking the road to the commissary that hasn't seen action since getting his ass kicked with those "American Gladiator"-style foam-padded sticks in boot camp is not a ***** hero. Nor is the fat son of a bitch that sits behind me eating McDonald's all day that sat on ass in Texas for his entire enlistment and is thick as *****.
On subject, yes, McCain got ***** up and suffered for the country. No, the "gooks", as he so lovingly calls them, did not imbue him with executive experience. - Iztikeit, on 07/04/2008, -11/+1And your definition is??? Did he call himself a hero? I don't recall....
- IphtashuFitz, on 07/04/2008, -2/+14True, but he did reject an offer to be released early because of his father. About 6 months after he was captured his father became commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater. The NVA offered to release him for propaganda purposes but he refused unless all prisoners taken before him were also released. As a result his imprisonment lasted 5 1/2 years instead of just 1/2 a year.
Considering that he broke two legs & an arm when his plane was shot down, the people who found him beat him mercilessly (including crushing a shoulder and bayoneting him) before turning him over to the NVA, who then decided to "interrogate" him more rather than provide reasonable medical care, and some prisoners who initially took care of him didn't expect him to survive more than a week, I could certainly see him choosing to be released rather than face more hardship with his captors.
For all that, and opting to remain with his fellow prisoners, I consider him a war hero. Do I consider that enough for him to be President? No. But I still consider him a war hero. - Sil369, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5He was against the recent ruling that Guantanomo Bay detainees have a right to a trail. I'd like to see a prisoner released from there (who turned out to be innocent), run for the presidency in his/her country of origin. I wonder how that could work out since it's sort of the same of what McCain did. (Former detainee = a hero?)
- Risingashes, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4I would say that any serviceman or woman serving in the defense of their own land or for that of an ally would qualify for being a hero.
To qualify as a hero you must look at a person's intent, not at the result. Someone who runs in to a burning building to steal some things, picks up what they thought was a bag of groceries, and later finds out that they were carrying a small child is not a hero- someone who is about to pick up the groceries and instead chooses to pick up a child is a hero- someone who runs in to a burning building to save someone and accidentally picks up a bag of groceries that they thought was a small child is a hero.
That said, serving in a war shouldn't be a prerequisite for being a president, and serving in the army gives next to no relevant experience for being the commander-in-chief.
- Fullvinyl, on 07/04/2008, -6/+11I can sense a digging-down for this, but you're absolutely right. I'm sorry, but the dickweed MP blocking the road to the commissary that hasn't seen action since getting his ass kicked with those "American Gladiator"-style foam-padded sticks in boot camp is not a ***** hero. - ZenMojo, on 07/04/2008, -2/+11I hate talking about it. Unless I'm on video and the Medal of Honor soundtrack (no *****, it actually happened) is playing illegally in the background.
- facelesscoward, on 07/04/2008, -2/+3Oh *****, dude. Good call. Not only does McCain have a bad temper when presented with a legitimate question, his subjects and verbs don't agree!
- MadKennyP, on 07/03/2008, -3/+19But McCain and his campaign have still found a way to remind voters with some regularity of his 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and his family's long tradition of military service.

- Stevanoski, on 07/03/2008, -30/+13Wonder why McCain doesn't use his two son's service right now in Iraq and Afghanistan for political advantage? Gore and Edwards trotted out their children's tragedies every time they could in hope of gaining women's sympathies. Reckon McCain is of a different cut from these "men".
- Qtip42, on 07/03/2008, -9/+14Are they walking freely through dangerous areas without protection too?
- jstohler, on 07/03/2008, -8/+15BS. McCain talks about his and his son's service all the time, he just always makes a point of saying "I hate talking about this..."
Come convention time, it'll be every word out of his mouth.
- esidahi, on 07/03/2008, -20/+41Oh feel sorry for McBush, he was a POW and his son's were in the war so that is a qualification to be president. Give me a fricking break. This is one of the reasons why i'll be changing my party in Nov.
Country before party
Obama '08- superkendall, on 07/03/2008, -17/+3Country before party is exactly why I'm voting McCain instead of Barr.
- OUberLord, on 07/03/2008, -4/+7The only thing I can see McCain doing for the country is finishing driving it straight into the ground, irrelevant of party affiliations or of whomever is running against him.
- johndavidjack, on 07/04/2008, -6/+4Yeah, you're right. The only thing I see Obama doing is changing the country, into something that America is not, and never was meant to be...

- OUberLord, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6He could also possibly become visibly angry when the moderator asks him questions.
- DaDrake, on 07/04/2008, -7/+2Unlikely... this guy has done tons of debate on the senate floor and kept his cool. Obviously good at debate.
- richardstaboner, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4I'll believe it when I see it. I agree with Carv, this crazy old nuts going to lose his cool.
- gryphon50, on 07/04/2008, -1/+6he is well-known for incidents in which he cursed at people on the senate floor. He has really offended many of his colleagues.
- CoheednCambria, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2I doubt he will look foolish or angry in a debate. Take a look at the Republican and Democratic primary debates. They were a joke for the most part.
- mrpetey, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2Obama (marxist empty-headed boob) with no TelePrompTer or speech responds in the debate (to any question) with

- lazerus9, on 07/04/2008, -5/+5And as mcCain fumed, he began fidgeting with a pair of steel marbles in his hand and mumbling something about strawberries!
- gttim, on 07/04/2008, -6/+6When he gets mad, he gets less pasty white! Then you had better watch out!
"Get off my lawn, damn kids!"- mrpetey, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1"pasty white" that is it bring race into it - dripping with sarcasm
- jjacksonRIAB, on 07/04/2008, -7/+8Yes, military service is not a prerequisite for a public that is clamoring for a peacetime President. I really don't care that Bush is a so-called "chickenhawk". It wouldn't ease my conscience one bit knowing he had a hundred purple hearts and a thousand congressional medals of honor.
A red badge of honor does not make one impervious to grievous errors in judgment. Mccain should be rightfully denounced based simply on his plans to continue along a perilous path that the majority of this nation doesn't want to follow.
His medals are irrelevant.- johndavidjack, on 07/04/2008, -5/+0***** what you want to follow. That's why you're not in charge.
Obama's fluff speeches are even more irrelevant.- jjacksonRIAB, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3False dichotomy?
I'm sorry, where was I defending Obama or saying I plan to choose him? I descend directly from a long line of military people, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and still I say military service is irrelevant. The President only approves operations. His staffers suggest the appropriate course of action.
By the way, I *am* in charge. Of myself.
You don't need leaders when you take responsibility for your own decisions, and I'm glad I'm not in charge of people like you. I hate changing diapers.
- jjacksonRIAB, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3False dichotomy?
- johndavidjack, on 07/04/2008, -5/+0***** what you want to follow. That's why you're not in charge.
- Iztikeit, on 07/04/2008, -9/+15Nice way to bring up 5 years of torture. McCain's entire platform isn't his military service. He's probably tired of hearing about Vietnam. Wouldn't you be? He only mentions his military service because EVERY ONE ELSE WOULD DO THE SAME. If Obama had military experience he'd be singing the same damn tune. Let's try to be fair, not biased idiots.
- OUberLord, on 07/04/2008, -4/+6It could also be that maybe the point wasn't what McCain answered the question with but rather how he answered it. Perhaps a person that cannot answer uncomfortable questions without acting like a child shouldn't be the person running the nation.
- Iztikeit, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2I like people who are open. Humans get angry. I don't trust people who don't express anger. Anger isn't always bad, and he didn't even do anything too outrageous.
Andrew Jackson shot and killed people in person duels. He's still considered a legendary president. - CrazyZ, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2yeah, if someone raped your mom, how would you feel if people constantly threw it in your face basically amounting it to a "non-issue"?
- Iztikeit, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2I like people who are open. Humans get angry. I don't trust people who don't express anger. Anger isn't always bad, and he didn't even do anything too outrageous.
- mikesoba, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4That would explain his seat on the United States Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs -- being tired of hearing about Viet Nam. Let's try and come up with some other excuse.
- Iztikeit, on 07/04/2008, -2/+0there's aren't specific to him, just related. I'm sure he thinks about it often and doesn't need someone to specifically point out something he's probably already addressed anyway.
- OUberLord, on 07/04/2008, -4/+6It could also be that maybe the point wasn't what McCain answered the question with but rather how he answered it. Perhaps a person that cannot answer uncomfortable questions without acting like a child shouldn't be the person running the nation.
- ericjohnson0, on 07/04/2008, -16/+10Well, I'm just glad that Obama is such an honest fellow. He's an inspiration to... Oh Snap.
http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/obama_loan_scan ...- elipabst, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3He got a loan at 5.625% versus the national average of 6.53%, whoopty do that's less than 1% percent difference. Anyone with good credit is going to get a better than average rate.
- jellygraph, on 07/04/2008, -11/+7Um, isn't McCain too old to be president?
- peaceninja, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3if obama was 20 years older and mccain was 20 years younger, i dont think things would be very different
- johndavidjack, on 07/04/2008, -12/+10Obama gets 'visibly stupid' when without a teleprompter...
- elipabst, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3If you voted for Bush then you seriously need to STFU right now and let the adults talk.
- mrpetey, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1there is one of those lefty-losers with the quick wit - NOT!
adults take care of problems, loser little immature people ask for - no demand that someone else take care of their problems for them.
i.e. - so you get it right, the govt is NOT the answer to our problems, govt is the problem. - elipabst, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1You should really get your mom to proofread your comments before posting, it might make them a bit more coherent. So please take your ritalin and try to keep up with the conversation.
His point was that Obama comes off as stupid when not reading a speech from a teleprompter. Now, if you're not going to vote for Obama because he comes off less polished when speaking casually and yet you voted for a guy who actually used the word "deciderer", then you're a hypocrite.
- mrpetey, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1there is one of those lefty-losers with the quick wit - NOT!
- johndavidjack, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0Actually no *****, I didn't vote for Bush. The point still stands though...
How is making campaign speeches about important issues just casual talk? You Obamatards will always find a reason to suck off the savior, even when he's clearly a fraud.
Edit: BTW, mrpetey makes a good point about the gov't being the problem, which Obama wants to expand and ingrain into our lives. Thanks for hitting that point up, not...
- elipabst, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3If you voted for Bush then you seriously need to STFU right now and let the adults talk.
- ericjohnson0, on 07/04/2008, -12/+7Well, the BEST reason to vote against McCain and for Obama is that he's going to get us out of Iraq immediately... WHAT? OBAMA FLIP-FLOPPED on that one too? Code Pink is gonna be pissed...
http://thesaloon.net/blog/_archives/2008/7/3/37747 ... - CrazyZ, on 07/04/2008, -11/+15You people are assholes. It's okay for everyone to get up in arms over Obama's lapel pin questions being beaten to death, to the point Obama had to wear one while he addressed the nation on his patriotism, yet a man who actually spent a couple years in a ***** POW camp can't get pissed when constantly badgered that his time in that camp means nothing......
I'd choose any vet over the likes of Obama any day.- birdly, on 07/04/2008, -8/+4One more reason to vote for Obama:
A person who begins his comment to the general public with "You people are assholes" is voting for McCain.- CrazyZ, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2No, my comment was aimed solely at the likes of you.
- birdly, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1"You people?"

- trouserslacks, on 07/04/2008, -3/+4I'm fine with anti-mccain stuff littering digg... but this is not newsworthy. S'like asking Obama how being african-american qualifies him to be president. McCain's military experience is more than before tortured for many years. I think the inference in the question is kinda distasteful and saying "Please" and looking a bit miffed isn't really the unhinged McCain outburst that everyone keeps wanting to happen. If he grabbed david wright and broke his arms and asked him if he felt more prepared to lead a nation that would be some news. You want to blast mccain... talk about his iffy policies or his flip flopping. Some tangible. Not some ***** "he said, he said" story. COME ON PEOPLE! IS THIS REALLY THE BEST YOU CAN DO TO RIP ON MCCAIN!? WHAT ARE WE... TACTLESS REPUBLICANS?!
- MikeFallopian, on 07/04/2008, -5/+8He "recoiled back in his seat"??? I AM OUTRAGED. This is a disgraceful display of emotion. Next thing you know, the old man will be rolling his eyes or even shaking his head to express displeasure. UNACCEPTABLE.
- Prathik89, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I agree. I support Obama, but seriously, stop this retarded *****.
- Urbalist, on 07/04/2008, -6/+6Looks like the kind of guy who would publicly execute anyone who dared to protest his tyranny....
Can believe people would actually vote for this nut... - CosmicH, on 07/04/2008, -4/+7If anything it's ***** with his mind even more. I don't understand why his service/torture time somehow gives him more credibility.
- aadyss, on 07/04/2008, -8/+4What is wrong with this article is twofold. One, the name of thinkprogress is in reverse order. It should be progressyathink? Actually, the liberal hijacking of the word progress demonstrates the liberal inability to carry a national election without shedding the liberal speak and move toward the center, as Obama is now doing. Secondly, the hit piece and preaching to the choir is completely infantile, at best.
- waluum, on 07/04/2008, -6/+6There isn't a lot that I like about McCain, but why should he answer some liberal *****-tank's question when all they are going to do is try to spin his response to favor Obama?
- leoofborg, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Uh, most of the hacks on either side are trying to do this, what's your point? Actually you *do* have a point.
You asked the right question; the answer is that he could have *ignored* the hack in question or just given him the 'yeah right, you're full of it' smile that was Reagan's trademark.
Again, I guess they don't make'em like they used to ...

- kmesp86, on 07/04/2008, -6/+6Can we trust a man who has human emotions and feelings?
- spawnfree, on 07/04/2008, -2/+6so when someone questions you do you explain or do you get angry that someone dared to question you.
charles manson has human feelings and emotions, its the conditioned bias, mental scars and psychosis we have to watch out for.- ericjohnson0, on 07/04/2008, -5/+1Comparing Charles Manson to John McCain? That would stirke me as stupid...
- spawnfree, on 07/04/2008, -2/+6so when someone questions you do you explain or do you get angry that someone dared to question you.
- ProUSADigger, on 07/04/2008, -9/+3The title is misleading. There is a huge difference between "challenged" and "insulted".
According to the article, the liberal hack ABC News reporter, David Wright, actually asked McCain to, "explain
how his Vietnam experience prepared him for the presidency". John McCain in fully aware that David Wright
is a liberal reporter. Of course it was an insult.
It would be like Hannity asking Obama, to his face, to explain how sitting in a pew of arguably the most racist
church on the planet for 20 prepared him for the presidency.
The question was intended to insult and anger.
Come on.- birdly, on 07/04/2008, -3/+3The difference is that Obama isn't using his church as a selling point in campaign ads.
I fail to see why the question is insulting. Can you give a reasonable answer to it? - mikesoba, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1No, asking McCain why he went hat in hand to the right wing wacko christian sects for their money and to instruct their sheep to vote for McCain after complaining only a short time ago that these folks are bigots is much more like Hannity asking Obama, to his face, to explain how sitting in a pew of arguably the most racist church on the planet for 20 prepared him for the presidency".

- jpgdiggit, on 07/04/2008, -3/+3This question is the equivalent of someone asking a survivor of physical abuse (parent etc) if they learned anything from it. I think it is a classless question,
If you think it is a good question then here is the answer : http://www.jimcollins.com/lab/brutalFacts/index.ht ...
I believe I am the only truly moderate in America as I have respect for both men.
Treat this man with some respect even if you don't plan to vote for him. This goes for left wingers and right wingers and can be applied to both candidates.- NSResponder, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3"I believe I am the only truly moderate in America as I have respect for both men. "
Funny, I know many moderates who hold them both in considerable contempt.
-jcr - leoofborg, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3Um, either of these guys are not 'human beings' per se.
They're 'politicians'. and if Johnny McSame is going to wig out over a crass / classless question what does this tell you about his ability as a 'statesman'? Maybe he's 'just' a backwoods fixer and not 'leader of the free world' material.
Reagan would have shrugged off this question. Even *Carter* would have handled it better. Actually both gents did get tasteless barbs like this, and that's why they became president. Even SlickWilly did okay.
But Johnny? Hmm, if he keeps this up he won't have to worry about Dubya's terms dragging the party down.
I guess they don't make aging, fatherly, sagelike politicians like they used to.
- NSResponder, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3"I believe I am the only truly moderate in America as I have respect for both men. "
- vexingmodstwo, on 07/04/2008, -10/+4So... we shouldn't vote for McCain because he's human? Is that the bottom line here?
- jaymzdean, on 07/04/2008, -3/+4You're pathetic.
- vexingmodstwo, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2Care to explain the point of the article then?
- jaymzdean, on 07/04/2008, -3/+4You're pathetic.
- leoofborg, on 07/04/2008, -5/+6If he can't take little licks like this from the press, what's the point of electing this Yahoo? What happens when he has to 'be challenged' by real heavies and not our 'wet noodle' MSM? Putin will eat this pussy for dinner.
Dubya's been given a hall pass by the MSM. Sorry Johnny, but your name isn't Bush or Kennedy. You shouldn't expect the [Mc]same. Suck it up, soldier. - NelsonR, on 07/04/2008, -7/+2We have endured Bush for almost eight years, why not McCain? Lets kick ass and be the rulers of the world and teach them how to be model citizens. Let's face it we Americans have a lock on being righteous and with McCain we will kick some of you know what. So the man gets mad, I predict he will attack Ahmadinejad and kick him in his groin. That is what America wants a leader with a little insanity within his makeup, Bush proves that point.
Hell Americans believe all the crap told to them even when a candidate flip flops. It's natural, we do not need any man of integrity or morals in the White House, we need a Pol Pot. A little satire makes ones day. Now I'm trying to keep up with the flip flops of Obama, quite amusing.
Politics is a sewer occupation and the egotistical political giants epitomize what a human will endure to rule over another. - NSResponder, on 07/04/2008, -4/+5McCain's only the candidate because Romney decided that he didn't want to be the guy to run as a republican for president right after Bush. Romney bailed, and he's probably planning to run next time, after McCain gets slaughtered by Obama.
-jcr - ihatea1sauce, on 07/04/2008, -6/+9I dislike McCain, but this has got to be the worst "article" I've ever read. It's less than ten sentences for ***** sake. Does digg really get off on every little smear they can find on a candidate that's less popular? Front page material?
I'm never coming to digg again. I'll get my "news" elsewhere. - jaymzdean, on 07/04/2008, -6/+4McCain.
I need two of him.
One to ***** on and one to cover it up with.- vexingmodstwo, on 07/04/2008, -4/+1You're pathetic.
- mrpetey, on 07/04/2008, -3/+1just need one of you (jaymzdean) to wipe the mess NoBama will leave
- BananaGrabber, on 07/04/2008, -2/+8uh, did he ever say being a pow makes him qualified to be president, in the first place?
- GreyFlcn, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2Actually yes, he did.
He claims that the war gave him "national security experience".
When what Wesley clark fairly commented is that nothing McCain did in Vietnam involved executive level decision making. McCain was in charge of an air squadron, however they were never deployed in combat while he was in charge.- AMACTASTIC, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2The question was did McCain ever directly say "I am qualified as president because i was a POW."
not
Did McCain mention that being in the war give him experience that would help him with one aspect of being president

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mccain_feingold - GriggsUSMC, on 07/04/2008, -4/+4McCain is most likely to be a senior citizen. And all because he's a Veitnam veteran all the rednecks are voting for him
- withears, on 07/04/2008, -4/+3The only time McCain hasn't sucked on the government tit was when he was getting ass-***** by the North Vietnamese.
