The Grand Illusion: Clinton in a Populist Package
abcnews.go.com — Hillary is a multi-millionaire who has graced the cover of Fortune with the glitzy headline "Business Loves Hillary!" and accepted millions from Wall Street. A woman of privilege- However, she has repackaged herself as a working-class hero while branding Obama, who grew up working-class with a single mother sometimes on food stamps an "elitist."

- aussiejan, on 05/06/2008, -9/+74I don't understand how the public can so easily buy into this nonsense. This was like Bush, who evaded National Guard duty to get out of going to Vietnam, using Kerry's war heroism against him to win the election. Are people really this stupid? The species ***** Sapien is clearly devolving.
- RoroCo, on 05/06/2008, -3/+18Unfortunately - for the masses of this country - it is easier to listen to a talking head and agree with them vs actually looking at the facts and coming up with a personally stance. I hope the US gets its collective head out of its ass and start looking at the issues as problem we need to fix rather than attributes of someone's character.
Obama has my vote, because I believe he is looking to a real approach to fixing the problems we see today... The other candidates are selling ideas that are not backed with intent. I would rather sit at home playing Grand Theft Auto then put my vote toward those clowns.- dizzythegreat, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Dugg for GTA.
...oh, yeah, and the whole...intelligence thing. That was cool too for a nice change.
- dizzythegreat, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Dugg for GTA.
- moolaismyfriend, on 05/06/2008, -9/+17You know when you have traveled as much as I have you realize that this country is infested with ignorant God fearing, anti-rational people who just want to follow and be told what to do.
It's a shame.- petebot, on 05/06/2008, -12/+5Well, that doesn't sound elitist at all.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -3/+9The truth does not an elitist make.
- clay104, on 05/06/2008, -5/+2Couldn't have said it better myself mool
- malman4, on 05/06/2008, -6/+2Yeah, darn those libtard sheep.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2Yeah, 'cause you know how those liberals are God fearing.
- petebot, on 05/06/2008, -12/+5Well, that doesn't sound elitist at all.

hahahaha - love the Devo though... too funny.
Proves a point in and of itself, doesn't it?
- qxrt, on 05/06/2008, -8/+3Way to undermine your own argument, condescendingly treating everyone who doesn't vote for Obama as "stupid." The whole basis for elitism is that you have a group of people who believes it is smarter than the majority of other people. Isn't it interesting how that works out?
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3You clearly failed..
- clay104, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I thought the word "elitism" or "elitist" comes from the word "elite" which has several meanings. The first meaning that mot people relate to are a faction or division of people or a part of such a division or class, who enjoy greater rational, social, or monetary status. The second meaning that refers to this very word is the most excellent or most trained affiliate of a group.
I don't think anyone can hold a photo of Sen.Obama up and match the word to him and most of Sen. Clintons' supporters know that and anyone who says otherwise is either a liar or out their mind or just; well Proverbs "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool that to speak and remove all doubt". - mummbleswers, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I think uninformed is a better way to describe it than just plain stupid, but I agree, we'll never win in November attacking each other so much. I like a good debate, but name calling gets us nowhere. You have to admit though, if you are someone who knows the background of these two candidates and still chooses to call Clinton a working class hero, and Obama an elitist, your pretty f'in stupid, or stubborn, or ignorant, either way you need help.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3You clearly failed..
- LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -5/+6When I travel Digg.com I see only liberals and hippies that believe they are the only rational people and post crap day and night about the new Messiah Obama that would make you wonder if there really is a god. They believe they are right everyone else is wrong. Vote for Obama or else. These people are true elitists. I remember yesterday they had a map of the US and just splattered color on it and submitted it on digg.com as a picture. They said this is why you should vote for OBama because he can unite people of different color. I was thinking. Wtf?
- dizzythegreat, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Uh huh. Great argument. SO much evidence and rationality to back this ***** up.
Well played, you crafty bastard.
Digg gives me faith in this country and, indeed, humanity.
By the way, thanks for using the entirely original name-slinging crap label of "Liberal Hippie." That's never been used before. And it totally makes liberals feel dirty for being liberals. It's not like we're proud to be rationally-thinking liberals or anything. - forgiste, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Ha, well I don't know about liberals and hippies, but if you have to wonder if there is a god, then maybe you're at fault, not the rest of the world.
- Pulch, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1No kidding, who has to wonder. It's completely obvious there's no god.
- dizzythegreat, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Uh huh. Great argument. SO much evidence and rationality to back this ***** up.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -6/+1Kerry? War hero? BWAHAHAHAHAHA The very people he served with said he was nothing but a liar and a bad officer. And why do you have to insult the National Guard? Did you ever serve in the military? I think probably not. Should we even bring up the fact that the Clintons are draft dodgers (Bill at least)?
- Mejari, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2How did he insult the National Guard? Did he ever serve in the military? Maybe not. Did he claim to? Nope. Did Bush try to make himself look like a great hero (flight suit + aircraft carrier + mission accomplished, anyone?) while never serving his country in the military one day in his life? Yes.
- caramba420, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2You do realize that the people from Swiftboat Veterans for Truth have already been exposed as being full of *****, right? Or have you been living in a cave for the last 3 years? Have you not noticed that "swiftboat" has entered the common vernacular as a verb meaning "a strong pejorative description of some kind of attack that the speaker considers unfair or untrue—for example, an ad hominem attack or a smear campaign"
- Terr01, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2You mean, the people who--according to military records--didn't serve with him but lied that they did?
- unreg, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Enough already. We get the point. Diggers don't like Hillary. Diggers dig Obama. Obama is the black Ron Paul, Ron Paul loves Digg.
- 1gunners4, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4People confuse self-worth with arrogance; like the description says, Obama grew up in a rather tough situation and is now at the top of the world, figuratively and soon to be literally. Guess what? The guy has a right to be a little bit cocky about what he's accomplished. I sure as ***** would be.
- caramba420, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0Literally? Is he going to the North Pole?
- caramba420, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2@ender
From the Wikipedia Switboat Vets and POWs for Truth page:
"Of those who served in Kerry's boat crew, only Stephen Gardner joined SBVT.[18] He was not present on any of the occasions when Kerry won his medals, including his Purple Hearts. Gardner appeared in two of the group's television advertisements.
All other living members of Kerry's crew supported his presidential bid, and some frequently campaigned with him as his self-described 'band of brothers'. Kerry crewmembers have disputed some of SBVT's various allegations: "totally false" (Drew Whitlow), "garbage" (Gene Thorson), and "a pack of lies" (Del Sandusky).[19][20][21]
No members of SBVT were aboard Kerry's boat during any of the incidents for which he was decorated. The only member of SBVT who was present at the Silver Star incident, Rood's crewmember Larry Clayton Lee, praised Kerry's tactics and stated that he earned his Silver Star; he stated that based on discussions with other SBVT members, he came to question whether Kerry deserved other medals for incidents at which he was not present.[22][23]"

- LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -4/+2People on digg.com are stupid enough to believe Obama is the messiah so yeah pretty ***** stupid.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3You got that right, he is just the best person running for president. It is weird that non-religious liberals would see anybody as a messiah.
- brianjlowry, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2You've made a career out of being buried. Good for you. What do you think this means in terms of well-read individuals not agreeing with ANY of your comments?
- LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2Only means digg.com is infested with left wingers liberals and hippies who find offense with a conservative Republican like always. Doesnt suprise me at all. Why do you think I should be suprised?
- fivefootfour, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2And the cycle continues...
- DarthTater, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Stupidity proved at least twice (2000, 2004) and to be tested again in 2008
- JettaMan, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1When Obama talks about people clinging to their guns he sure sounds like an elitist. The gun issue has to do with the constitution stating that individuals have the right to defend themselves. It's got nothing to do with clinging.
- jamessavik, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Back when Bill was running for Prez, Hillery made headlines by "dolling down" her image by baking cookies and "speaking Ar-Kansan".
"Welcome to the Whytte Haus y'all." You could tell she was doing it through clenched teeth.
- LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -4/+2People on digg.com are stupid enough to believe Obama is the messiah so yeah pretty ***** stupid.
- jtdoty, on 05/06/2008, -8/+21True, Americans are addicted to sound bites. This time I hope that people do not allow the Clinton's to ramrod the Democratic party into throwing out the millions of new young voters that Barack Obama has brought into the equation. It was young people who first founded and formed our Government, to ignore them now will be a terrible mistake.
- EntropyFan, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4What are you talking about? Washington was in his late 50's when elected as the first president. Adams was in his early 50's.
Christ, Franklin was in his 80's by that time.
And most of the founders of this country were their contemporaries.
Stop attempting to rewrite history just because the real version doesn't back what you want it to.
- EntropyFan, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4What are you talking about? Washington was in his late 50's when elected as the first president. Adams was in his early 50's.
- littlequeenie, on 05/06/2008, -3/+31it scares me that people buy into this. Those people who say the more "we" bash her, the stronger she becomes. Never mind how much the gas tax holiday - as if it would pass - would save people - it will cost over 300,000 road construction jobs!!! That figure comes from the economists who all criticize this plan - not one has come on board to support it. But she smugly states she doesn't care. She sounds more and more like Bush - this either you're with us or against us mentality.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -3/+1Where are you getting your figures? 300,000 road jobs. Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. I can use numbers too. 98% of Dig liberals only have 10% of the facts 100% of the time. And I guess the very roads we drive on will ceace to exist right? You people crack me up.
- scamper22, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0it might cost 300k road construction jobs.
Either:
1. the government takes my the gas tax money and gives it to road contruction jobs.
2. I keep my 40 bucks or whatever it is...and so does every other American and buys a nice meal at a restaurant and employs them.
That's the idiocy of taxing for 'job creation'. All it does is transfer jobs from one group of people to another group of people.
That is with the exception of taxing those who hoard wealth (the super super rich). In that case, taxing them might do some good, if they're not actively investing or spending it.- prinzrob, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1So, what you are saying is that there is no net monetary benefit to the American people either way.
As such we can either have:
1. usable roads and bridges by keeping the gas tax
or
2. a steak dinner by repealing it for the summer (or maybe spend it on gas from the middle east, or toys and shoes from China, or not spend it at all)
I'll let you decide which option is more prudent.- scamper22, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0if the roads NEED to be fixed...they NEED to be fixed.
My comment is in regards to taxing for job creation. It shouldn't matter how many jobs are on the line in the road construction field. That is a non-issue.
If the roads don't need to be fixed...then no...I'll take the steak dinner.
If the roads to NEED to be fixed, then you have to spend money on that.- prinzrob, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1As long as people continue driving there will always be roads that need to be fixed. The amount of funds available only dictates what percentage of those repairs will be completed.
I would also say that the jobs maintained by those tax dollars are indeed an issue, just try asking a road crew. Especially so when you consider that there is no guarantee that the tax dollars would otherwise still be spent on American goods and services. In any case, job creation is just one facet of the argument against repealing the tax for such an insignificant reward.
- prinzrob, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1As long as people continue driving there will always be roads that need to be fixed. The amount of funds available only dictates what percentage of those repairs will be completed.

- pyronik, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1its not a good idea because obama didn't come up with it
- Gabberwok, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8It's not so much that people are buying into this as that people who buy into a populist message tend to have more trouble voting for someone who looks different than them than most other Democrats. So Hillary is giving them an excuse to vote for her, even though few probably believe what she's saying - it just gives them a reason not to vote for a black man.
- selmer, on 05/06/2008, -2/+21As the attacks ramp up, it becomes more and more clear that Clinton stands for status quo (albeit one without W), and Barack stands for a fairly large shift in policy and thinking. What is sad, and abundantly clear, is that Americans are fundamentally scared of change and that is why Clinton is gaining here at the end. It boggles the mind why Barack would not be the clear cut favorite, but this is all I could come up with. We talk about how we want things to be different, but when the time comes to make it happen, people get scared.
- LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -4/+1Obama is a true leftist. America is not left. Not hard to imagine once you get passed the war issue that Obama and the general American public have nothing in common.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Just keep telling yourself that.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Obama will be exactly status quo. To believe anything different is to believe in a farce.
- LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -4/+1Obama is a true leftist. America is not left. Not hard to imagine once you get passed the war issue that Obama and the general American public have nothing in common.
- patpl22391, on 05/06/2008, -6/+12I don't care if either one is elitist. I don't care how much money they have earned, why is it bad they make a lot of money? What matters to me is what policy decisions they will make if one of them becomes president.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3Right, so if you use a little logical deduction, you will see that Hillary will make policy decisions based on how to make sure her and her rich elitist friends stay rich and in power and Obama will make them based on what is best for the country.
- oldgal, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Early on I heard an analyst say that the Clinton philosophy is that if you get the results you want then you did the right thing, while the Obama philosophy is that if you do the right thing you get the right result. It seems like the voters are in a split pretty closely on these philosophies.
- agentVivid, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1wow -- sounds like politics to me... go outside!
- ScoobyG, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9From the article - people actually buy her BS:
---
"Her work ethic and her working class roots really stuck to me," said Indianapolis Democratic voter Ken McGuffey. "Her determination to get where she wanted to get."
"Number one: She's brilliant," Pat McGuffey chimed in, in support.
---
I hope the rest of Indiana's a bit smarter.- CrackyJSquirrel, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Well, maybe its my bias being from Chicago, but I really am not banking on Indiana doing the right thing.. I just know I wont be surprised if she pulls out a win there... Stinkville, its all up to you, please dont ***** this up.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2So people that don't back the same candidate as you are idiots. That's a pretty pathetic and narrow minded frame of mind. What happened to you libs and your mantra of tolerance? Guess that goes right out the window when someone disagrees with you. True colors coming out now in all the lib hypocrisy.
- Mejari, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1It's perfectly reasonable to call someone an idiot when they believe something that is wholly untrue (Hillary has working class roots). Doesn't matter which candidate they support (there are some idiots that support every candidate).
- topherbook, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Being from Indiana myself (until about a year ago), I am sorry to say that Indiana is well represented by the two Hoosiers quoted in that article.

- Kenzan, on 05/06/2008, -2/+7"Why don't we hold these Wall Street money brokers responsible for their role in the recession?" Clinton said Sunday in Indianapolis, before the state's primary on Tuesday."
What a hypocritical waste of humanity.Hillary is.
Madam, you simply have no honor.
Based on what I've read regarding the history of Obama, Hillary and McCain, it does not take a rocket scientist to see the choice is clear. THIS IS A NO BRAINER, PEOPLE! OPEN YOUR EYES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!
Sadly, I feel like my country is filled with idiots.- HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3And in the speech, she actually said "money-grubbers" before backpedalling when confronted. I mean, jeez, if you're going to trashtalk a group of people, at least have the balls to stand by your opinion.
It's pretty awkward to say, "Wall Street money brokers."- Kenzan, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2I wonder how her broker on Wall Street who made her tens of millions of dollars feels about that.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -4/+0You're right. I refuse to vote for a criminal such as Hillary and I refuse to vote for an America hating racist like Obama. What are we left with... not much. I dont feel like my country is full of idiots, just gullable people believing in ***** promises coming from a man who has yet to put out any real policy other than hope and change. You're right. Its a no brainer. McCain as much as it pains me to say it.
- Kenzan, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Obama a racist?
Don't make me laugh.
Name one racist thing Obama has said or done during his campaign.
So he wrote about his negative feelings in his book about whites who have been giving black folks the shaft for 300 years.
Can you blame him? He's human you know.
Is that all you got?- ender7074, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Yes, I do blame him. Racism is racism no matter if you're white or black. You libs cant seem to comprehend that.
- Kenzan, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Obama a racist?

- WasabiBomb, on 05/06/2008, -3/+3It's a little weird that ABC is now, apparently, going after Hillary. I guess they smell blood.
That said, I'm boycotting ABC, so I refuse to look at the story. - crazyjake, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1nice Boston reference!
- needlenosened, on 05/06/2008, -3/+3It's called the Big Lie. Worked for Hitler and countless others. You see it every campaign it seems. People fall for it every time.
- anoneng, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4Why in the hell do politicians fight to prove they are more middle class and mediocre than each other? Granted their ideas are pretty stupid, but still, don't we want an elitist running the country? Personally I want someone who knows they're better than me. A lot better, smarter, more handsome, more charismatic. I don't want someone who goes bowling on weekends and chases whiskey with beer. I'm good at that stuff, leave it to me. Let the elitists run the country. And quit kissing the lower class's ass, if they were so great, they'd be in the middle class or upper class.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3When did you turn in your balls?
- anoneng, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2If you want a blue collar worker running the country the manager at walmart is probably old enough to run. And he can beat the hell out of Obama when it comes to bowling.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Okay.
Why do you people feel the need to see everything in black and white? Did you know that there are millinos of people that fall somewhere between elitist and WalMart manager?- anoneng, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0But the elitist with the high class education and experience running huge corporations is a better candidate to run the free world
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Okay.
- anoneng, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2If you want a blue collar worker running the country the manager at walmart is probably old enough to run. And he can beat the hell out of Obama when it comes to bowling.
- topherbook, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2I was with you until that last sentence. The lower class are not less worthy of respect than the middle or upper classes.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3When did you turn in your balls?
- Noonward, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1I think it's insulting how much they expect us to trust words. We're not idiots. Every candidate.
- NelsonR, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Seek and you shall find the truth. This article is finally throwing out the mystique of a lying Hillary campaign slogan that Obama is the elitist. Hillary and Bill the Mega Millionaires, Chelsea their daughter making 160,000 on that corrupt street of immoral and unethical behavior, WALL STREET, you know where insider trading and thievery is rampant, while their partner the Commodities market is stealing from you while raising everything we, the average, use in our daily lives. Screw our elite, the media, politicians, financial institutions that are all the same with Hillary and Bill and Chelsea screwing you at every turn.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0You need to get out more. Or drop your obvious jealousy of the Clintons. If you love socialism/stalinism move to a lovely vacation spot like one of the old Russian republics where you owe everthing to the government and only get what it decides you can have. Moron. Obama is zero percent different than Hillary.
- NelsonR, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Sorry, you are dead wrong in a faulty analogy. Hillary has proving to be a liar. Wait, duck incoming sniper fire. The Clinton's garnered wealth after arriving in D.C. JEALOUSY, I am quite comfortable with earned income, no cronyism, no thievery, no pandering and in other words I earned my money and I could care less about how much they have but how they obtained it, FOLLOWER IDIOT.

- bratterscain, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1Politics....politics....politics. Both sides act immature at times. You're not an elitest based on what you were when you were born or grew up, but who and where you are now in life and in views. I'm not bothered by pro-Hillary or pro-Obama debate, but the childish word-twisting people will do for each one. That's why at one time I chose not to view the political BS section here and will probably uncheck it again.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4Yes, because it is best for people to not have an opinion or espouse said opinion. People should just shut up and let a computer pick their candidate based on hair color.
- bratterscain, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1*insert lame 'yes, because' line here* people should just be quiet until they can use a fair amount of reason/logic in their argument before spamming digg with the *****.

*insert lame "bratterscrain is an idiot comment here."- bratterscain, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Nothing I said is illogical. Point out one flaw in my original comment that was dugg down.

- bratterscain, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1*insert lame 'yes, because' line here* people should just be quiet until they can use a fair amount of reason/logic in their argument before spamming digg with the *****.
- SpudgeBoy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4Yes, because it is best for people to not have an opinion or espouse said opinion. People should just shut up and let a computer pick their candidate based on hair color.
- MrTito, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Hillary's moved so far to the right that even ABC is bashing her now.
- GrodyChamp, on 05/06/2008, -5/+2Awesome. I was just thinking to myself "Man, I wish there was a couple hundred more Obama spam stories on the front page. I've only seen about 10 so far today!", and just like that, BAM!!!!!!!!!, another one!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! - dafragsta, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6THIS, and nothing in the Cracked article is why humanity scares me. How can this bitch pass herself off as working class AND a gun rights person. This is a flea-flicker taken straight from Karl Rove's playbook.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0Funny how it worked twice against elitest libs.
- dafragsta, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I'm sure there was something in that point that was supposed to make you feel self righteous and somehow that would be funny to a select audience, but I don't know what it is. Is your point that non-"libs" are gullible too? My point is people are naive to vote for someone because of who they pretend to be, and not who they are and it doesn't matter what party the candidate belongs to.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0Funny how it worked twice against elitest libs.
- papipablo, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Now write an article about how Hillary the Republican has managed to package herself as a Democrat.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2Please dont insult Republicans like that. You libs wanted her, now you can keep her.
- diggB, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4First, abc's George Stephanopoulos asks Hillary why she can't name one economist to support her summer gas tax, and now abc.com has an article on showing why Hillary's populist message is hypocritical. Perhaps abc is trying to compensate for the blatantly biased debate they held? Just say'in.
- fx666, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3Obama lost the ABC debate because he is inherently stupid, not because he got railroaded by George Stephanapoulos.
- mal1964, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1If I had a dollar for every Hillary story that had its original headline, Wait I'm a idiot for thinking such a thing. But really why change it?, If its negative its on the front page. Give me a dollar for that!
- seandaly, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3Blah, both Hillary and Obama have taken the "populist" route as of late, and neither have the right to do so.
It think it's a slap in the fact to the public that both have essentially taken the entire Edwards campaign and rolled it into their own, acting as though they thought of it. *****, Hillary's health-care plan is 99% carbon copy of the Edwards plan.
IMO, both are guilty of pandering to the public and both are pathetic for not staying true to who they are. - LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -4/+1All the candidates have been very good at manipulating the story of their youths. For instance few know this but Obama's father was a drunk polygamist wretch who died drunk in a car wreck in the streets of naorobi. He fathered children before and after marrying Obama's mother with his first wife in africa. He fathered other children with other women as well. Anyone who read the fine books of Obama would note he skipped mentioninng any of this on any page in the book. Obama's mother if anything was a true moron. Hillary has painted her past up but Obama is no different. Don't you find it a little strange we always here endless stories of the great Obama's mother but rarely anything about his father? Here is the true story::http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=5 ...
- Alphabet, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1I don't see how that makes Obama worse. Whatever your father did, he's still family.
- LukasSmith, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1We are talking about a presidential candidate who claims he can make good judgements when he (had) parents who lacked any.
- Hypermarkalan, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Wouldn't this make Obama MORE populist? I know a lot of our population has to deal with dead-beat dads and dumbass moms. The wonderful part, and the all-American part, is that Obama was able to receive an education and become who he is in spite of all that wretchedness. So Obama tries to add a little bit of dignity to the memory of his father and you think that's a bad thing? Hillary, on the other hand, tries to cover up for her life of relative comfort because she knows it would affect voters.
- incredibilistic, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3The worst part about this is that all those working-class voters will never read or see this story because they're too busy voting for Hillary on their lunch break from the steel factory. Or maybe walking home from work instead of driving to save gas, which means they won't be near a computer to read stuff like this before they cast their vote.
Since most of the internet is against Hillary it would suggest that all of her voters either don't have internet access or are blind to Hillary's political posturing.
She can't run a campaign without being in debt, she's using scare tactics to get votes, she wants to blow countries up without thinking twice and she LIED horribly (not misspoke) about her trip to Bosnia several times.
I'm normally a glass-half-full kind of guy but I'm getting more and more afraid that Obama will get pushed out for no reason other than the words of an incredibly stupid, loud mouthed, over-zealous preacher.- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Shes told no more lies than Obama has. Hell, Obama even threw his own grandmother under the bus to get votes. Yah, just the kind of guy I'd want in office...
- Hypermarkalan, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_divide
- Barackalypse, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2In contrast to say a multi-millionaire graduate from both Columbia University and Harvard Law School who is married to a Princeton graduate? Clinton and Obama are elite in the worst way, they both believe the government has an important role to play in how you live your life and that they are ones best equipped to run that government. For all those pointing out Obama had a single mom (mostly because his worthless Kenyan dad ran out on them, not that that isn't stereotypical in anyway at all), Clinton was born to immigrant parents and attended public school.
- Hypermarkalan, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Keep spinning.
Hillary's parent's weren't immigrants. Her GRANDPARENTS were. And her family wasn't exactly poor, or even struggling. Her father owned a successful textile factory that produced drapery. At age 13, Hillary was comfortable enough economically and socially to work for the Nixon campaign in her neighborhood. Not exactly a paper route to help the family make ends meet.
You mention that Obama is a multi-millionaire, which is probably true, but you don't mention that his success was due to his own perseverance and ambition.
Rodham, while not exactly rich, lived in a home of relative wealth and privilege. And then she married Bill, who's grandparents were basically loan-sharks, and who's father co-owned a car dealership.
Go back to hillaryis44.com and rewrite history. I'm sure the people there will praise your distortions.
- Hypermarkalan, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Keep spinning.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3An even grander illusion: Clinton and Obama have significant differences. Wake up people.
- scooby007, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Man, I'm so glad to see some mainstream skepticism surrounding Clinton. She's been caught lying so many times, it's hard to keep track. And the tax holiday is a very enlightening window into the type of president Obama or Clinton would be. Here we have Clinton trying to defend the tax holiday, despite ALL evidence to the contrary from all economists, senators, etc., Republican AND Democrat alike.. sound familiar? Reminds me of the last 8 years. Contrast that to Obama, who came out against it right off the bat.. AND turned out to be right. This happens to him a lot - turns out he made the right decision after all the dust settles - we need someone who can think on their toes AND have the right answer.
- NelsonR, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0Absolutely correct. Hope and change is not something an illiterate follower wants to hear. They are either getting something from the corrupt system for free or they have the brain of a sweet pea.
I go with Hope and Change but also understanding that if Obama gets elected and nothing changes the wrath of the people will be upon him. One more point, with the way Bush/Cheney has screwed up America we all must remember it will take time to correct since even us supporters know Obama is not god. - scamper22, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0read more into it.
He tried the gas tax cut in Illinois, it failed. That's why he knows it will fail.
Which bring up 2 interesting points.
1. He can learn from his mistakes (THIS IS GOOD)
2. Why did he not consult these economists when he was voting for it in Illinois? I'm sure he could have gotten similar advice saying it is a bad idea. Or was he so ideological that he decided to try a policy anyways...hmmm... this is what I fear from Obama. He is too ideological and has no concept of how policies affect reality.
So practically speaking, the USA needs a good leader. Admitting your mistake is wonderful. Trusting a candidate with a 'vision for change' who is going to increase taxes and blah blah blah is not wise when he has shown bad judgment in the past.
That's what I read from it.
- NelsonR, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0Absolutely correct. Hope and change is not something an illiterate follower wants to hear. They are either getting something from the corrupt system for free or they have the brain of a sweet pea.
- fx666, on 05/06/2008, -3/+3Both Clinton and Obama have humble beginnings. She got rich, he got a PhD from Harvard. She still supports blue-collar workers, he turned his back on them by insulting their religion and way of life. Of course, he is an elitist who deserves to be called Barack the Blabbermouth because of endless meaningless speeches. It seems to me that the Obama supporters are hypnotized by his oratorical abilities without realizing that he is full of hot air.
- scamper22, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1dugg you up, because you're the only commentor on digg who seems to realize how pointless Obama's speeches are. Absolute hot air without any substance. Yes, elitest he is for the reasons you say.
//I'm not a Hilary supporter...just a Canadian ***** disturber.

- madrona, on 05/06/2008, -3/+5I am SO tired of Digg's unrelenting infatuation with Obama and hatred of Clinton. Everything's Saint Barack and She-devil Hillary. Simple-minded devotion to a flawed view of reality.
- beauley, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Is Hillary Clinton for "The Citizens" of the U.S.A.? That is the function of the "President", or is it for personal gain? She never divulged the truth. Why should she start now? Just check the 1996 bill submitted to congress by Hillary Clinton and look who saved all America's butts, which includes all our children. http://www.ronpaul2008.com/discover-and-imagine-ro ... - alwshiloh, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3So apparently it is impossible for anyone who grew up working class raised by a grandmother on foodstamps to be an elitest? You guys are so cute.
- minox, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3We get it. Obama's mother got food stamps. My goodness, this is being repeated so often that it's turning into John Edwards talking about working in the mills. For some reason people still think there is nobility in poverty.
- pyronik, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1she gets food stamps while hes doing drugs
and we are promoting that as being presidential
- pyronik, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1she gets food stamps while hes doing drugs
- bbqsalad, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1My guess is if Hillary wins... We are completely *****. I feel like America wants change and to make peace and bring some honor back to this country. I just have so little faith in the majority here. Sad really.
- gdagreat, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1this is why i love digg :)
- scamper22, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Can we rename the summary to: "The Grand Illusion: Obama in a populist package"
This has got to be the most laughable line ever
"Obama, who grew up working-class with a single mother sometimes on food stamps an "elitist.""
sure sure...working class...right...
working class people don't attend private schools like Punahou School where tuition is 16k per year.
lol. relax folks. Neither Bush, Clinton, Obama, McCain is 'working class.'
They've all lived lives of privilege. It's a pity you have to keep trying to show Obama as somehow being from the streets and working his way up to be successful.- scamper22, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I'll just add, just because he is black doesn't mean he has experience poverty or isn't an elitist.
I'm from Africa and yeah, there's a lot of poor blacks in poverty there.
There's also a lot of rich blacks who act no different from Dick Cheney or some snobby theater critic.
- scamper22, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I'll just add, just because he is black doesn't mean he has experience poverty or isn't an elitist.
- pnmoore, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Wow! It is like she is a chameleon or something...she is a totally different person depending on where she speaks, just to get votes. I would have never thought that of her (or any politician, for that matter).
/sarcasm - bentl1, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4As understand it, the Obama suporters are praising him for being on food stamps and hating Hillary because she wasn't. It doesn't seem to matter to his supporters that in his "Mein Kampf" he states his raw, unambiguous hate for "whitey". What a great president he'll be ... he despises half the country (even his white supporters). The only question I have about his supporters is: are they simply ignorant of his deep hate for "whitey" or do they agree with his hate for "whitey"? If a white presidential candidate said the things about blacks that Obama said about whites, and actually put it in print, they're be rioters screaming for for his head. It's odd how a virulent racist is considered acceptable, so long as he is black. This guy is simply despicable, and only worthy of loathing by of any person with a shred of morality.
- JJisKing, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3That simply couldn't be better any written ... congrats.
- highdimension, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Bentl1, what has he said about whites? Did you forget that he is also half white? Stop acting like you are all educated with words like unambiguous when you can't even spell words like "supporters." You know, they have a "Spell Check" button on the bottom left-hand corner before posting a comment. If you can't even find a measly button, how can I trust your lack of research and credibility, assclown.
- highdimension, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah, only idiots will believe this nonsense. I'm sorry for quoting 'Jeremiah Wright', but what he said was true. How can a spoiled rich white girl who went to Yale, married a Govenor who soon became President, who used her husband to launch her political career "call" a Multi-Racial man, who was raised by a single Mother on food stamps, who went to college on scholarships, who just paid off his student loan, who had to work hard for all the opportunities America gave him to get where he is now, an Elitist. Sorry for the long sentence, but people who believe Hillary relates to the middle-class are media-fixated morons who believe flag pins are what is going to bring this country together really need to start thinking for themselves. Here's a tip: Grow a brain. 99.9% of Americans have to work hard to make a paycheck, only 0.0000001% have the luxory of marrying a president to launch their own political career.
- minox, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3I think branding yourself as a populist is pretty much inherent to how the dems have been operating in recent history. You can't sit through one speech without hearing them talk about little Jimmy Baker whose house was repossessed, can't afford gas, has 8 toes, 1 leg, and a heart condition. These Dickensian speeches have been the bread and butter for supporters of government programs for years. They tell us about people who likely don't exist in order to convince us to give up even more of our pay check.
- datagram, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1How could Jimmy Baker have 8 toes and 1 leg?
- MisterChirish, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0While drinking Molson, and celebrating my Canadian citizenship (don't get me wrong - we're not necessarily smarter, it's just our bat-***** insane politicians aren't as bat-***** insane as yours), I'm going to laugh my ass off when Hillary actually gets voted into the White House and all the middle and working class Americans get pissed off because they voted for her and then they find out she doesn't know the first thing about what they go through, and doesn't live up to any of the promises she's made to sway them.
Hahaha... Yep, I'm gonna laugh. And then run for the nearest bomb shelter when she pushes the button to nuke Iran and starts WW3.... - Spoomeister, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I'd be a lot happier if someone forgot to poke air holes into that package she's in.
- performingsys, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0You have so much to say about the Clinton's. Yet all that you say proves and supports their qualifications above and beyond someone who knows nothing about true government operations. Oh, excuse me.. knows how to get 'Food Stamps'. Great.. just what we need to lead the US and be a Commander in Chief.
Wake up your ignorance, please and vote for some one who is qualified for a change and not what your little and simpleton ideas are about in a virtual world.
For god's sake.. what the heck has Obama done for his own constituents? Where the heck are his qualifications? Or is it because of the color of his skin?
I am losing a great deal of respect for any intellect from people who choose to vote because "I am black, I will vote black'. What about qualifications? What about qualifications? What about qualifications? Can you hear me?
Peanut farmers know how to grow peanuts. Government scholars know how to run government.
The Clintons have paid their dues in service for their country for years. Because they now have money, you don't like them? I certainly would like to follow success and not failure. Which would you like to follow? What side of life do you want to survive in? The poor or the plenty?
Remember to choose your mentors with regard to accomplishments.
Hope you can see the light soon or you may follow the road how Hitler fooled the country.. or how Castro overtook his government.. all with false promises.
Here's hoping you wake up soon... br- lafindumonde, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1And I've lost a great deal of respect for this comment. Bear in mind, your argument rides on the assumption that black individuals are voting for Obama because of the color of his skin. I'm sure there are plenty of instances in which you're right. However, have we not seen the exact same thing in regards to Clinton? How many middle-aged women have jumped on the Hillary bandwagon because she's just like them? Welcome to America, where the majority WILL vote for a candidate for those very reasons, whether you like it or not. Oh, and for the record - the Hitler/Castro comparisons are beyond absurd. 1.
- p0s3r, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1It doesn't matter what you were. It matters what you are.
- barathron, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Sick of political ads... Buried
- Aleman360, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Let's just call this situation for what it is: if Obama looked like John Edwards, he would definitely be the nominee by now. Period. The only reason she's still in the race is because many people simply won't vote for him and have no other choice.
- lafindumonde, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Couldn't agree more. I have a friend interning for the Clinton campaign in central NY, and you wouldn't believe the racist filth that comes in over the phone lines - you'd think we're voting for our fifth president. So, thanks to a remarkable display of stubbornness from the Clinton encampment and the deeply instilled belief that blackness and incompetence are one in the same, this is what we're looking at it today. Sure, go ahead and say it, you're voting for Hillary and you certainly aren't racist. But guess what? Far too many are. 1.
- TheMayor, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Didn't Obama and his wife have a joint return that said they made 4.5 million last year?
In other words, Barack Hussein Obama (pbuh) is also a multi-millionaire.
And for you brainiacs who think and said that only the rich vote for Hillary, didn't she win Penn by 10 points, the place where, as the media pointed out, the blue collars and the less-educated voted for her in droves.
Sorry to take the steam out of you Obama robots, but your boy is an elitist, and you people have been duped. Again. -
