Talk to your enemies?
dallasmorningviewsblog.dallasn… — Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, for one, warns that the United States could be sacrificing a major opportunity to avert a future war by refusing to hold talks with Iran. Defense Secretary Gates has echoed that sentiment. But, of course, Obama is "naive" for talking like that.

- 140Suffolk, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2What's Obama going to say? "We don't want you to develop nuclear weapons" and Iran will say "Too bad. We intend to nuke Israel"
Now what? What's Obama going to say now? "Well, how about if you just have little nuclear weapons"
Does he really think that his charm is so strong that Achmadinjad (sic) will faint the way liberal white women do when they hear Barack speak?- mabs0, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2What do you think Roosevelt or Churchill told Stalin? At that point, Stalin had control of half of Europe and was pretty much in good shape to fight for the rest. What do you think Nixon told Mao, with whom the US had diplomatic exchanges just as China was aiding the anti-American insurgency in Vietnam? What do you think Regan told Gorbachev? What do you think Carter told Sadat to sign the Camp Davis Peace Accord? What do you think Nixon told Khrushchev? And finally, what do you think Bush told North Korea to get them to abandon their nuclear program?
The public statements leaders make are not the complete picture of their true demands and are often not even accurate. They are not going to put their thoughts in an email either. Face to face talks, out of sight of their enemies and competitors, gets them to be a little more candid about their true intentions and give you a broader picture of what else they might be trying to hide. That's why you keep your enemies closer: the more you know about them, the more likely you are to find out their weaknesses or what makes them tick. When Regan told Gorbachev to "tear down this wall" he said it because he found out through diplomatic efforts that the Soviet Union was on its way down and Gorbachev was looking for a way out. You talk to people, you find out stuff about them, you eventually get the upper hand.
Not to mention that diplomatic missions are a lot of time a good excuse for covert operations.
There. Did this broaden your horizon? I hope so.- 140Suffolk, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1You think that a never-did-nothing empty suit like Barack Obama is in the same league as Winston Churchill. Or FDR? Or Ronald Reagan?
You think North Korea abandoned their nuclear program?
There. Did that broaden YOUR horizon?- mabs0, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Yes, I do think that Obama could very well be in the league of great presidents of this country. His qualities and achievements are obvious to anyone with an open mind. You don't have to like him or agree with him but you cannot deny the obvious.
As for NK halting its nuclear program, I'm not the one saying it.

I can see you like living in a tiny world. - 140Suffolk, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1What achievements? As a 'community organizer' ? A 'civil rights" lawyer? In the Illinois legislature? Nothing, nothing. And nothing.
And you're going to cite the IAEA to me? They're known for NEVER finding anything.
