Superdelegates Turned Down $1 Million Dollars From Donor
huffingtonpost.com — One of Sen. Hillary Clinton's top financial supporters offered $1 million to the Young Democrats of America during a phone conversation in which he also pressed for the organization's two uncommitted superdelegates to endorse the New York Democrat, a high-ranking official with YDA told The Huffington Post.

What would be interesting is to hear about (and we won't - but it would be interesting to know for sure) is the supers who have accepted these Ickes brokered deals and have to keep quiet about it.

When she formally drops out of the race, she's putting an end to her life's dream. That's why she's staying in as long as she can. Hillary's candidacy is a spectacular public display of grotesque delusion. - rmxz, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10Perhaps she wants the Republicans to win so she'd have another chance in 4 years; and perhaps she thinks the more she embarrasses the democrats the better chance that'd happen?

So, cut them a little slack for cozying up to the US - but don't let them have undue influence.

- jamesLankford, on 05/19/2008, -3/+7of course these are true elections,
- Gerz1219, on 05/19/2008, -2/+24Unclear. If a bunch of kids are holding elections for treehouse president, it's not illegal for one candidate to offer a pack of jelly beans in exchange for a vote. Since political parties are technically private organizations, primary seasons exist in an uncomfortable middle ground -- they are private in the sense that they are not directly administered by the government, but public in the sense that either a Democrat or Republican will inevitably become president. The FEC doesn't regulate primary season as strictly as general elections for this reason. Superdelegates have never really been in a position to override the pledged delegate leader, so this has never been an issue.
The funny thing is, it's illegal to offer a primary voter cash in exchange for their vote. But it's probably legal to offer a superdelegate money for their vote, and a superdelegate is worth about 30,000 voters. - atticus8, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7I wish someone asked the more basic question: shouldn't the concept of superdelegates be illegal? Or at least thrown out as total idiocy? I'll not even examine the very obvious question of how you reconcile such a concept in a democracy that tries to convince people that each individual vote matters: "hey buddy, your vote equals a good hundred thousand of us normal folks, because you are just super!" Why not bring back a council of barons and the landed gentry while we are at it?
No, my real problem with it is entirely practical. If superdelegates are just going to go with whatever the people decided the democratic primaries and caucuses, then why have them at all? If superdelegates are NOT going to go with whatever the people decided, then, from what I am hearing on the news and from what I believe in my mind, people will (rightly) go ***** by the fact that the superdelegates overturned the popular will.
But no one believes that is going to happen. That's why everyone feels safe saying "Obama will be the nominee"... because it's so outrageous to be practically unthinkable. So, again, why even have them?- RussellDovey, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1It's an internal mechanism of a political party, not an official part of the government. They can choose their candidate however they like. Those who lose can still run for president, they just won't have the power of a major party behind them.
- winampman2, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I think most people in the party realize its stupid, but its hard to change. There are so many rules and regulations that have already been made concerning this system. Its like trying to get rid of inches/feet/miles and replacing it with the metric system. Not gonna happen in the US without a lot of work.
- badqat, on 05/19/2008, -11/+6You do realize these aren't true "elections", right? This is nothing more than a process of the democratic party.
- Zlorp, on 05/19/2008, -0/+15this delegate/superdelegate thing is *****. they leave the REAL decision up to a handful of people whom they can more easily convince or dare i say bribe. its almost like they're afraid the voters themselves might pick the "wrong" person.

- mbraynard, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2If one of these two candidates still runner was strong enough, the SDs wouldn't be an issue at all. The SDs have never come close to deciding an election.
They weren't created to decide elections, either. They were created so that the common Democrat activist wouldn't have to run against his own elected officials for a chance to attend the national convention.
As a college student, I ran for a National Delegate slot at my state Republican Convention. *Every* slot to the national convention actually went to an elected official or a former governor - except one that went to the boss of the state's Christian Coalition.
I would much rather have had these 'super delegate' slots take the elected officials out of competition. (Though the quota system for gays, women, teacher, racial minorities, and cripples that the Dems have would not be helpful to me).

- glucoseboy, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6Who's your Power Ranger baby?
Yes, it's that Saban. - thepeacemaker, on 05/19/2008, -1/+12I used to wonder what has Israel done (besides bombing our navy ship, spying on us, illegal occupation, etc) that they are our "closest ally and best friend in the world", if our politicians are to be believed. Well now I know - when it comes to our politicians, they simply out-bribe everyone else...
- bjornski, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9They've done nothing for us. They're defended because of that damned ancient storybook. And because of WWII, if you don't agree with everything they say, and do everything you can do to help their lives, you're anti-Semitic.

- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I don't really get that assertion. In fact, I never seem to fall under it, at least not in real life.
One of my better friends, Noggah, is a devout Jew, travels to Israel at least yearly, etc. He doesn't even bat an eye when I question the asserted responsibility of the US to baby Israel. He actually has conceded that perhaps support of Israel should weigh more heavily on the many and strongly funded zionist charitable groups, and not so much on the taxpayer's dime.
Of course, he's an ex art student from New York, so yeah - probably a little more progressively minded than some of the overzealously pro-Israel pundits out there.

- chrissku, on 05/19/2008, -3/+11Yea Hillary that's the way to do it...if you can't beat Obama fair and square try buying your way into the nomination. I can't understand why 60% of Americans think you're untrustworthy?

- sryan8913, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1"superdelegates have received about $890,000 from Obama and Clinton in the form of campaign contributions over the last three years"
that doesn't even add up to the bribe claimed in the Huffington Post which was a single instance- badqat, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Oh...so it's the amount of the bribe that matters, not the fact that super delegates are for sale, nor the fact that both candidates have purchased them? Rich stuff! Gotta love the selective morals!
Besides...the one claimed in the Huff-and-puff Post isn't the Clinton campaign doing it, but a third party doing it. - Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Also the time span. In the last three years? That includes time when Obama and Clinton didn't even know they'd be running. This seems more like political inter-backscratching than campaign scandal.
A detailed breakdown of when these contributions occurred would be salient. - sryan8913, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1It's not selective morals its the fact that they are 'campaign contributions', which could mean anything and probably isn't anything as serious as a 1 million dollar bribe to TWO super delegates.
890,000 dollars worth of campaign contributions from BOTH campaigns combined to ALL the super delegates combined over the course of 3 years is a really small number and is indicative of standard American political procedure whereas a 1 million dollar bribe from, not Hillary Clinton, but one of her major contributors is indicative of Hillary Clinton catering strongly to large donors who are apparently desperate to see her running things for their benefit.
- badqat, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Oh...so it's the amount of the bribe that matters, not the fact that super delegates are for sale, nor the fact that both candidates have purchased them? Rich stuff! Gotta love the selective morals!

- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1No, the Huffington Post has not made up anything. They, while drawing vitriol from some Diggers for being biased towards the left, are factually correct, and take pains to get that way.
They do, on occasion, omit some of the story - but this usually is only when a story is strongly controversial, and I believe it comes more from having a higher proportion of left wing sources than intentional omission.

- hiriumi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3How is this not a bribe?
- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3A bribe is a payment to a government official to deliver a governmental favor that he has no right to deliver. As 'superdelegate' is not a governmental position, but a position of the democratic party - a private entity - this cannot be legally considered a bribe attempt.
There may be something in the democratic party bylaws about exchange of payments for votes, but I have not read the bylaws, and am thus unaware of it.
If anyone feels like doing the research here, I'd be happy to know. I'm not interested enough to look it up myself, as Clinton's no longer truly in the race - but it would be illuminating.
