President Apostate?
nytimes.com — One danger of [Obama's] charisma...is that it can evoke unrealistic hopes of what a candidate could actually accomplish...Case in point is the oft-made claim that an Obama presidency would be welcomed by the Muslim world...With few exceptions, the jurists of all Sunni and Shiite schools prescribe execution for all adults who leave the faith...

- Idiggapony, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4To summarize this op-ed piece: Barack Obama was born a Muslim, but voluntarily left Islam to become a Christian. Under almost all interpretations of Islamic law, leaving Islam is the worst crime a Muslim can commit, even worse than murder, and is to be punished by execution. Furthermore, Islamic law forbids Muslims' protecting an apostate from being punished for his crime.
In light of this, how would an apostate president be received by the Muslim world, and could security guards from regions where Islamic law is recognized as the supreme authority be trusted to protect President Obama during his visits?- cashman57, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3I know that what you write is true but can you imagine the uproar if he was sentenced to death like Saman Rushdie?
All Rushdie did was write a book, he never turned his back on Islam.
As I understand it once you are muslim you belong to allah and thus turning away from islam is the same thing as stealing from allah which is not permittied.

- bitfreak, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3The first commenter in this post is not accurate; his Father before him renounced his Muslim faith before Barack Obama was born. Obama did not 'leave the faith', he would have had to BE a Muslim to LEAVE the faith.
- Idiggapony, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1If true, this doesn't make my summary of the op-ed piece inaccurate. But it certainly could be relevant. I'm not aware of any statement that Barack's father renounced Islam before Barack's birth, other than this one. I also don't know if Islamic law considers the child of an apostate to be a Muslim or not.

"Young Muslims begin dangerous fight for the right to abandon faith" - “Sharia schools say that they will kill the ones who leave Islam. In the West people get threatened, thrown out of their family, beaten up,” Mr Jami said. “In Islam you are born Muslim. You do not even choose to be Muslim. We want that to change, so that people are free to choose who they want to be and what they want to believe in.”
