- MarkusX, on 11/15/2008, -2/+14Well, "guessing" a password can hardly be called "hacking",
maybe "intruding", but not "hacking".
And PRISON might just be a little too much for that boy.- radu79, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5If he actually bragged on 4chan that he hacked into her e-mail, then his lawyer must have some really big balls to ask that his client is not called a hacker.
- MarkusX, on 11/15/2008, -1/+2Many programmers also use the term "hacking" in order to describe that somebody did a quick and dirty fix to a problem. Instead of following by-the-book programming techniques.
But that doesn't mean that these people want to be called hackers.
The kid used the term very slang-like.
The lawyer, however, wants to estabish a reason that the jury could get a wrong picture of the Kernell, who doesn't usually hack into secured networks or computer systems. - radu79, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Yes, but that is totally different.
That guy (if the article is correct) bragged about what a pr0 1337 hax0r he is, and he meant it in the way of gaining authorized access to a machine/account, not in the way of "I had to do a dirty hack to fix a problem in the latest kernel". - MarkusX, on 11/16/2008, -1/+2ok radu, I agree, he meant to impress the guys on 4chan.
But fact is, that "bragging about hacking" doesn't make the it "hacking".
The term "hacking" in his bragging posts was clearly exaggerating of what he did: He simply guessed a password, with background information that Palin actually released publicly.

- Raisedshoulder, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2Yes Palin should have had better questions and answers.

Is he a "Hacker" ?- these days
I guess that depends on what the definition of "is" is -
Now,
my question is, did Kernell have others that were aware and encouraging his activities?- lazerus9, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3He may be able to get off with an insanity plea.
- r3negadeX, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1Yeah, probably not the best idea to look up technical / science lingo in a standard dictionary. They use the word "microcomputer" for god's sake.
On that note, I think the word "hacker" was coined at MIT.

- dede28, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4i think so , nice post
- str3ama, on 11/16/2008, -0/+5he's not a hacker, I believe the proper term is script kiddy or phisher (although he didn't really phish the info, but collected it from news sites). There's a part of me that realizes the offence is pretty damn minimal and they should probably just drop the case, but then another side that wants to see this kid get screwed over and made an example of - just because he was stupid enough to brag about it.
- MarkusX, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2Indeed, I think he was just very stupid to brag about what he did.
Script kiddie, however, refers usually to people (mostly teenagers) who write (script) viruses or malware for "fun".
The term script usually means also that they use or modify existing exploit code or virus scripts that are freely available on certain hacker websites. Often these kids aren't expereinced programmers, but only have some half-knowledge of what they do, which can be even more dangerous than if a "professional" virus programmer had done it, because the "little" scripts they just wanted to "try out", can easily get out of hand and become a worldwide virus threat with no emergency stopping mechanism built in.
I think the proper term for him is just "idiot". ;-)- r3negadeX, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1"Script kiddie, however, refers usually to people (mostly teenagers) who write (script) viruses or malware for 'fun'. "
You mean, people who_use_ viruses or malware for fun. Skiddies don't know how to code. Well, maybe a little VB6 :P

I know this is only if he is convicted, but seriously, it's scary that they even consider doing that much. All he did was play a silly little guessing game with a Yahoo account.
They make it sound like he's dangerous. - hooah212002, on 11/16/2008, -1/+3If he got into some random bitches email account, nobody gives a *****. But since it was a high profile whore, he gets the book thrown at him. Did he harm her in any way? did she lose anything except face? Did he h4xor her bank or CC? No. Slap him with court costs....MAYBE. but ***** prison? If you honestly think he deserves to be put away, put yourself in his shoes. So what if you wouldnt have done it, felonies aint no ***** joke (I know from experience). So to say he deserves anything more than possibly a fine for doing something stupid is preposterous.
Shouldnt the prisons be for reall criminals? Rapists, murderers, and the like? Just seriously imagine yourself as this "kid" before you throw him under the bus..- MarkusX, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1I absolutely agree.
- xN8x, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1If he does get put in prison... he won't be able to see much from his house.
