- eastwood24, on 09/22/2008, -3/+6Wow, a crowd that size must be exactly what a hannah montana concert is like, except there's no bubblegum pop music and there's teleprompters (and yes this is sarcasm).
- noupsell, on 09/22/2008, -4/+1cool this helps me filter down my friends list
- edblaze, on 09/23/2008, -1/+0can you elaborate on why she is a terrible pick so you can prove you have no idea what you are talking about? please.
- silverbulletky, on 09/22/2008, -6/+16Quoting a comment from that page
It's even better than stated in the story. Obama drew a crowd of 20,000 in a town of 671,588 (according to Wikipedia).
Sarah Palin drew a crowd of 60,000, in a town of about 75,000 (again, according to Wikipedia).
Total percentages (approximate):
Obama: 2.9% of the people
Palin: 80% of the people- davidg11, on 09/22/2008, -5/+8Funny.... 80% is Palin's approval rating in Alaska.
If you'd read Digg only for political information, you'd think her approval rating was 2%.
I love it when the liberal Ostriches hide their heads in the sand. - tyho, on 09/22/2008, -3/+6Wow that's a huge percentage. That's awesome!
- tracygav, on 09/23/2008, -3/+1As you all know Sarah Palin is under a probe investigation for abuse of power. Alaskians are are now seeing the light. The republicans and the right wing media wont tell you this but Palin's approval rating dropped from 90% to 67%. Palin is going to become a liabilty to McCain once the whole story in Alaska begins to break out.
- silverbulletky, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2You do realize how good 67% is right?
- ericcarroll, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Actually, I think if people read Digg only for political information you'd think her approval rating was a negative number followed by a lot of expletives and someone filling the comments full of "PALIN IS FULL OF LIES SMEARS LIES..."
You do realize Obama has far more to be concerned about than Palin ever will, right? - frofisrael, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1tracygav: you poor thing - console yourself with your false hopes! Sarah is a winner. Sa-Rah, Sa-Rah, Sa-Rah!

- Marble68, on 09/22/2008, -26/+44You're ignorant. Palin represents the average American. That's why people turn out to hear her.
She's a true representative of hope; evidence our founders knew what they were doing; a true representative of the people.
A train? perhaps so; but not the type you'd like to see.- pprovo1, on 09/22/2008, -22/+14*A true representative of a selfish and deceiving politician who will only bring more corruption to Washington.
I think thats what you meant to say right? - TheNWO, on 09/22/2008, -9/+11pprovo1. I'm assumed that you support the slimy Chicago machine politician. But after seeing your profile, I saw that you are a supporter of that slimy 20-something odd year Congressman from Texas who can't get any legislation passed but who sure knows how to bring pork back to his district, how to pander to extremists like white nationalists and conspiracy theorists, and how to set up a for-profit business using political campaign contributions. Given where you're coming from, do you really want to get into an argument about who will bring more corruption to Washington?
- Zeitgeist101, on 09/22/2008, -12/+10"Palin represents the average American. That's why people turn out to hear her."...are you kidding???
The average American does not speak in tongues, or believe in banning books from public libraries based on our churches preferences, the average American would not force their 17 year old daughter into motherhood and a doomed marriage.
Th average American believes in separation of church and state. The Average American does not believe that living adjacent to a foreign country gives us Foreign policy experience...
Sarah Palin is the reason that one after another, intelligent conservatives are jumping ship and supporting Obama/Biden.
We need brilliant leadership right now, not another religous nut who thinks that God wants us to be at war!!!
Sarah Palin is Bush in drag...but worse!!! - ugottabejoken, on 09/22/2008, -12/+5It is 2010. Out-of-work parents say goodbye to their sons and daughters on their way to the trenches of Iran and Russia, while President Palin (sworn into office in 2009 after President McCain's untimely demise) and President Ahmedinejab rave about their respective end-times.
Social Security and Medicare are discontinued. Health care is unattainable.
Tent cities spring up in city parks. National parks are buzzed by aerial hunters.
Hurricanes wipe out the Gulf coast, the oceans have become one big dead zone with only lionfish and jellyfish, America's beaches are covered with garbage; the Midwest is a permanent flood zone (between tornadoes), cities, chokingly polluted, are filled with paranoid citizens with gun permits, new prisons are the only new home construction, twenty-five percent of endangered species have passed the tipping point to extinction, though not on any government list, and Saudi Arabia and Dubai (where Dick Cheney is living out his retirement) have matched China, India and Iraq in owning our over thirty-three trillion dollar national debt.
Sound far-fetched? Perhaps.
But what if it's not? - whatthefu, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4She does not represent the average American, no matter how much you want her to. Bringing the founding fathers into this has nothing to do with anything; it's just rhetoric. She's a politician. Nice try, nobody's fooled by your fake attempt to make people believe all of his supporters are dumb as dirt.
- pprovo1, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2If anything you guys are dumb as dirt for thinking that McCain is even slightly qualified to run a country...War is not the main issue here, its the economy, and he has admitted to knowing NOTHING ABOUT THE ECONOMY. I think it is pretty logical to reject McCain considering his lack of experience in that field.
- lajaw, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1hey pp.............just what role do you think the government ought to play in the economy? A don't seem to recall anything in the US Constitution regarding anything other than the money supply.
Hey, I voted for Paul myself. He is the most intelligent of all the candidates in either party. He just ain't pretty, and talks to soft with intellect and not sound bites. But now that Palin is in the race and Paul is out, I'm going for McCain. Then Palin in 2012.

The change is change to far-left Liberal values.
The uniting all people together means, unite under my (Obama's) beliefs and bias.
So he will save the world and us from ourselves, as long as we embrace the loony leftist's philosophy of " nothing can be done without government involvement" & "government should decide best if you have too much money and who it should be given to".- solboldi, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1good point. the gov't sucks hard at managing anything.

- ranchhand, on 09/22/2008, -31/+55 Palin is a real person with values and commitment that so many of us middle class relate with. After listening to him all these months. I still wonder what he's gonna change. Clothes, shoes, shorts?

- Dabaum, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4As an entirely non-partisan statement, I don't care if I can see myself "having a beer" with my leader. I want my leader to have excellent judgment and surround him/herself with the best possible advisers and cabinet members to improve the condition of our country.
- eastwood24, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4But your supposed to treat politics like a sports game or soap opera, blindly supporting your team or character. Blind partisans are so F*cking annoying and they just keep on breeding.

Well that about describes everybody on the planet.
"I would sure rather watch her elaborate what she believes to be the best interest of all Americans"
Wouldn't we all, except that the McCain campaign handlers keep her on a tight leash, especially after her Charles Gibson interview. How am I supposed to judge her abilities if she won't answer questions and only gives her canned speeches?

- thepalineffect, on 09/22/2008, -4/+5The fact we can have a detailed discussion about who's more qualified, her or Obama, shows she's qualified plenty and speaks badly for him, especially when his own supporters are talking about her "lack of" qualification.
- keltin, on 09/22/2008, -3/+8Gov. Palin has the human and American qualities that I look for in a leader. Not only is she someone I'd vote for, she's someone I'd like to sit down and talk to over a camp fire while out on a hunting/fishing trip.
She is so much more grounded in reality than Obama/Biden.- scubaman5000, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4So you prefer a leader that doesn't think about what she does before she does it. Someone who acts on what her gut tells her rather than careful rational thought. Someone who believes that she has the right to impose her own definition of morality on everyone else. You prefer a leader who is absolutely clueless when it comes to foreign relations and nearly every other aspect of Federal Government? You prefer a leader that is dedicated to pursuing a holy war against an enemy she knows nothing about.
This isn't a ***** fishing trip so don't vote like it is. Research where she stands on the issues (if you can that is, it's hard to find out her position since she has to hide from the media asking her questions she doesn't have answers to). - glinsvad, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4Personally, I'd prefer having anal retentive workaholic brainface politicians leading my country rather than good-for-nothing rugrats like myself (heck, I'm not fit for government). That being said, vote based on your politics not on your politicians.

- Dabaum, on 09/22/2008, -2/+7I'm not endorsing Obama to any extent, but you are basically saying that you are going to vote a person into one of the highest offices in the entire world on the basis of her skills in hunting and fishing? Seriously?
- library.ninja, on 09/22/2008, -1/+6it's amazing that people treat the friggin election like they're voting for the next american idol. "Oh that person is just like me so I will vote for them." I don't want someone "just like me" in the highest elected office in the country. I want someone who's smarter and more qualified than me. Huntin' and fishin' makes her qualified to host an outdoor show on TNN. That's about it.

Your 'republican surge' and 'palin power' is just really the republican lie machine in its usual action.- thepalineffect, on 09/22/2008, -2/+11Lol yeah let's throw away the estimate of a guy who has to be able to accurately predict crowd sizes for safety and crowd control reasons, and accept the estimate of a couple guys who are paid promoters for Obama. Liberals are truly idiots. Proven once again.
- SuperVepr308, on 09/22/2008, -2/+9That is hilarious. They would take a reporter's estimation over a guy who is trained and does this ***** for a living. Ostrich Effect.
- tasine, on 09/22/2008, -2/+9Someone from AP and your friend estimate only 10s of thousands, so it is obviously less than 60,000? And the Fire Marshall estimates 60,000 and is obviously off by several 10s of thousands. Are you actually firing on all cylinders?

- frofisrael, on 09/22/2008, -18/+18Of course Sarah would attract the people at the grassroots who care about righteousness, the sanctity of human life, the importance of obedience to the God of all creation - the God of the Bible. Sarah represents all that they believe in. They know that she can be trusted to do the right thing because she believes and practices the right thing. In other words, she walks the talk! I think if John McCain goes down in history for any momentous move he made it will be for bringing Sarah Palin out of anonymity onto the world's stage.
- eir574, on 09/22/2008, -8/+15"In other words, she walks the talk!"
In her personal life, perhaps. She's certainly capable of lying (or distorting the truth for the purpose of misleading people to such a degree that it's indistinguishable from a lie) to advance her political career, though.- frofisrael, on 09/22/2008, -10/+11Dear digg people, let me introduce to you Saint Eir574 who never told a lie in his/her life and who has just been canonised by the devil!
You are indulging in baseless slander and libel, you shameless liar! - eir574, on 09/22/2008, -9/+13I can promise you that I've never told a lie to advance my career. I can also tell you that although, like all people, I do make mistakes and lie from time to time, I don't knowingly repeat a lie over and over again. I certainly don't do it for the purpose of gaining political power.
I'm not engaging in baseless slander and libel. Sarah Palin keeps telling people that she told the government "thanks, but no thanks" on the bridge to nowhere. The true story is that she was a proponent of the bridge before she was against it. Even then, she kept the money.
How many people who were wooed by Bush's faith and later regretted voting for him are now finding themselves wooed by Palin's faith? - trogdoor, on 09/22/2008, -1/+16"I do make mistakes and lie from time to time, I don't knowingly repeat a lie over and over again."
It's worth making the distinction between lying and saying something that is not true but which you honestly believed to be true at the time. Lying is "the deliberate act of deviating from the truth", you don't make a mistake and accidentally lie. - Squidwalk, on 09/22/2008, -4/+10frofisrael,
Arguing that Eir574 has lied in the past does not disprove that Sarah Palin has lied in the past, and shows signs of lying in the future. You have committed the ad hominem fallacy, and you have not defended Eir's refutation.
Most of us are adults. Don't insult us with your weak arguments, we know better. - Squidwalk, on 09/22/2008, -1/+5ZeRux,
You don't have any evidence to show that my main tactic of discussion is ad hominem attacks and straw man arguments. I believe that I've been consistently rational with my comments, and you have failed to show that I have not been.
...unless that was a "/s" post, since you're using an ad hominem to attempt to refute my recognition that another person has used an ad hominem. Sorry if I didn't get the joke, some of these guys would actually write something like you wrote in earnest.

- ugottabejoken, on 09/22/2008, -17/+6Florida Leaning Towards Barack Obama Because of Sarah Palin!!
Six weeks ago, the St. Petersburg Times convened a group of Tampa Bay, Florida voters who were undecided about the presidential election. Their strong suspicion of Barack Obama suggested it was a group ripe for John McCain to win over and to put him over the top for Florida.
Not anymore. This Florida group has swung dramatically, if unenthusiastically, toward the Democrat Barack Obama. Most of them this week cited the same reason: John McCain’s running mateSarah Palin.
“The one thing that frightens me more than anything else are the ideologues. We’ve seen too many,” said 80-year-old Air Force veteran Donn Spegal, a lifelong Republican from St. Petersburg, who sees John McCain’s new running mate as the kind of “wedge issue” social conservative that has made him disenchanted with the Republican party.
“I’m truly offended by Sarah Palin,” said Republican Philinia Lehr, 37, of Largo, Florida a full-time mother with a nursing degree who voted for PresidentGeorge Bush in 2004. Like Sarah Palin, she has five children and she doesn’t buy that the Alaska governor can adequately balance her family and the vice presidency.
“You’re somebody’s mom and what are you going to do, say, ‘Excuse me, country, hold on?’ … She’s preaching that she’s this mom of the year and taking that poor little baby all over everywhere. And, you know, what she’s doing to her 17-year-old daughter is just appalling.” Lehr said she’s bothered by the way Palin’s pregnant daughter has been brought into the national spotlight.
Skeptics like these in Florida are ripe to put Barack Obama over John McCain in Florida and ultimately the entire election. While the pick of Sarah Palin is playing well for conservatives, it is the undecideds John McCain needed and his campaign stunt did not work.

Besides, 60,000 Floridian retirees are hardly representative of what modern America should stand for. Our society eclipsed their wants and proclivities two or three generations ago.

- AmericanAngle, on 09/22/2008, -16/+10ugottabejokin: I'm all up for fantasy novels and hypothetical notions.
Now, here is a dose of reality based in FACT, my friend;
1.Barack Obama has MORE subversive, terror (domestic & foreign), anti-American, Marxist affiliations than any candidate running..PAST or present. Barack Obama is on the record for emboldening Iranian President Ahminajihad.
2. Compared to Obama Palin has a PROVEN record of accomplishments indicating a far superior knowledge of the economy, which includes SS, Health care.
3. Tent cities & Ariel hunters...Ugottabjokin...Kucinich would be proud(writing him in?)
4. I almost forget "The One" is running therefore he may be able to control acts of God.
If the unforeseeable does occur Palin has a PROVEN record indicating her experience in directing such matters. As Commander of the National Guard (limited experience or not it is still FAR SUPERIOR than Obama's) Palin will know how to mobilize a response to natural disasters.
Newsflash: The earth is for Humans to utilize in order to prosper.
We should all be proper stewards of the earth whether you believe it is God's green earth or if it was spontaneously combusted.
Palin understands this and won't allow enviro-arsonists to hijack this earth to save it ONLY for endangered species.
Wake up..WE are an endangered species!

SARAH PALIN -
1. Abuse of power scandal AKA troopergate, working on a cover up

6. Failed with her own daughter regading abstinence and family values
7. Denies the reality of climate change.
8. Has close ties to big oil
9. Was for the pork barrel projects before she was against them
10. Wants to impose her will on women and deny them choice.

- ebrandsberg, on 09/22/2008, -7/+12One thing to note about Obama's turnout: There wasn't room for any more. The 20K number was just the people that could fit inside the gated area, there was an estimated 5-10K that were in line (1.2 miles long) trying to get in as well, and a huge number that saw the line and just left or couldn't find parking. I know, since I was one of the people in line, and walked 1.2 miles from where I got in line until I was at the gate. The fact is, the gathering couldn't have been any bigger since they didn't have room for it to be.

Not when 95% of the population is made up of 45+ers (more than half the total population is over the age of 65....)
So, sure, it makes for a good headline. But when she draws a crowd in a place that advertises themselves as "Florida's Friendliest Retirement Hometown," does it really mean anything? Not to me. When she pulls a number like that in, say, Miami, Jacksonville, or Tampa, and the age demographic is a bit better represented, well, then I'll bow my head and be impressed.

The point I was trying to make was, this story is insinuating that this was some amazing rally for Mrs Palin, whereas in actuality this was a gathering of people in a somewhat private and secluded town. Considering the population is 98% white, and the aforementioned age discrepancies, I just think that this gathering should be looked at in the bigger picture: yes, their votes count, but no, this was not some major win for the lady. You cannot ignore the demographic she was immersed in, and you cannot say that the news twisted the story to make it seem like something it was not.

The St. Pete Times's Adam Smith had another fire official in the crowd say it was about 25,000.
Considering the McCain campaigns track record on reporting numbers, I'd say they are beefing it up again. Also, there are a TOTAL of 70,000 seniors in that retirement community, and it's a Sunday. And, given it's 70-80% republican and a hotbed of racism around there, I don't think Palin lovers should be looking at this as a sign of the national electorate.- 03FightOn, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3How is McCain beefing it up if it came from a local fire marshall?
