Overly Optimistic Obama gets Down to Doublespeak
politico.com — After Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill, he put together a speech today attempting to take credit for the successful passage of the bailout bill. After it didn't pass, he was forced to scrap that speech and find some other partisan way to milk the financial crisis

- DuggDowner, on 09/29/2008, -4/+20First old cut and run McCain claimed credit for the bill, then when the bill failed he passed the buck to blame Obama. Guess you can't expect much from McCain. When the going gets tough, McCain runs away.
- anstrange, on 09/29/2008, -10/+4Before I even digg you down I am going to give you a chance to think through your last sentence. That sentence reeks of hatred that cannot find a truthful outlet. Barack Hussein Obama would already have us out of Iraq (pre-surge) if he had his way...because (gasp) the going got tough. I bet there are some Vietnamese interrogators who really wish you were right in your assessment of John McCain. If you want to bash McCain have at it, but at least come up with something that isn't so absurd as to destroy your credibility before the sentence is even over.
- DuggDowner, on 09/29/2008, -3/+8McCain was a POW?
- anstrange, on 09/29/2008, -9/+51. Get exposed as an idiot who can't even come up with a coherent complaint about a candidate on Digg.

3. ??????????
4. Profit! - DuggDowner, on 09/29/2008, -2/+6If John McCain was a POW why wouldn't he talk about it on the campaign trail? You're a despicable liar.
- sullivanst, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2There are some Vietnamese interrogators who got what they wanted out of John McCain. He even admits they broke him.
That's not a black mark against McCain, but don't try to claim he resisted when actually the record establishes that they broke him.
This is why his flip-flop allowing the CIA to torture and the Gitmo tribunals to use confessions forced by CIA torture is so repulsive. He knows first hand what torture does, and what the "intelligence" gleaned from torture is worth: absolutely nothing, you just say whatever your captor wants you to say.

- ozydingo, on 09/29/2008, -0/+20"Obama proven overly optimistic"? For (reportedly) preparing the following sentence:
"And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have agreed on an emergency rescue plan that is our best and only way to prevent an economic catastrophe." ... ? Maybe I just fail to see the gross optimism in preparing that sentence based on the expectation that the bill would pass. And where is the credit claiming in that?
Also, that's not doublespeak, unless someone can show me the distortion in the meaning of words. - eir574, on 09/30/2008, -1/+19Why is it unreasonable for someone to prepare remarks about the outcome of an event before the outcome is known? McCain himself used the example in last week's debate where Eisenhower prepared two letters, only one of which would be used depending on the outcome of the invasion.
In addition, how does "And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have agreed on an emergency rescue plan that is our best and only way to prevent an economic catastrophe." mean that Obama was planning on taking credit for the passage of the bill? The article itself doesn't even claim this -- only the submitter. - jperson, on 09/30/2008, -3/+5*sniff*sniff* Hmm... it smells like October alright.
- kmom5, on 09/30/2008, -0/+13Buried for being a total misrepresentation of the actual article cited.
This is what the article actually says:
Obama's prepared remarks, from earlier today in Colorado.
And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have agreed on an emergency rescue plan that is our best and only way to prevent an economic catastrophe.
Not so much.
UPDATE:
After seeing the bill fail, Obama scapped the originial script and talked of Rocky Mountain-like turbulence
And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have a responsibility to make sure that an emergency rescue package is put forward that can at least stop the immediate problems we have so we can begin to plan for the future. As I said, this is a hard thing to do. And right now Democratic and Republican leaders have agreed but members have not yet agreed.
There are going to be some bumps and trials and tribulations and ups and down before we get this rescue package done. It is important for the American public and for the markets to say calm because things are never smooth in congress and to understand that it will get done. That we are going to make sure an emergency package is put together because it is required for us to stabilize the markets and to make sure that when a small business-person wakes up tomorrow morning, he will be able to make payroll.
We are not going to lose jobs at an even faster clip than we are doing right now. I am confident we are going to get there but it’s going to be sort of rocky. It’s sort of like flying into Denver. You know you’re going to land but it’s not always fun going over those mountains.
