Obama's donors: Do NOT fund media-527s & other indie groups
politico.com — Obama's taking a strong stand against 527s--including those that would presume to benefit him (and hurt McCain).

- motivatedmama, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3Gave to the DNC last week. Didn't see the article here but news is the Republicans are out raising the Dems. Time to get on the ball for the general!
- jmk4422, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3What Obama is saying is this: I can take care of myself; I don't need to go running to 527's for help when the right-wing smear-machine comes knocking. A brave move... I wonder if Mr. "There's nothing we can do about the 527's" McCain has the same stones?
- neognostic, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Actually, this is a brilliant move by the Obama campaign. By refusing to have his supporters give money to 527s, when the Republicans ramp up their own 527s, then the Democrats can say, "look business as usual, same old Bush tactics, same old Bush message." He can then call out to McCain who repeatedly has said that he wanted to run a clean campaign to disavow these groups and their message.
- Fordi, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Not to sound stupid... but what's a '527'? It's not actually mentioned in the article.
From I can understand, term represents a soft money group used for circumventing campaign finance rules by taking money for the purpose of propagandizing. What's the origin? How correct is my impression?- jforjools, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Yep, that's the jist of it. Often referred to as 'Swiftboaters'. (But some of these groups focus on increasing voter turnout and such--and are not always negative attack hounds...though the 'hounds' seem to be the more popular flavor of 527s.)
Thanks for bringing this up--wish I would've included something about this in the description. (I wasn't familiar with the term til just a couple of months ago.)
From wiki:
A 527 group is a type of American tax-exempt organization named after a section of the United States tax code, 26 U.S.C. ยง 527. A 527 group is created primarily to influence the nomination, election, appointment or defeat of candidates for public office. Although candidate committees and political action committees are also created under Section 527, the term is generally used to refer to political organizations that are not regulated by the Federal Election Commission or by a state elections commission, and are not subject to the same contribution limits as PACs. - Stevo23, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1That's pretty much exactly what it is. The number 527 comes from the section of the tax code that deals with such groups.

- pablo0713, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2And people still think Hillary is the better candidate. *smacks head against wall repeatedly*
- Stevo23, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1This is a really classy move on Obama's part. The message here is "I don't need rich donors pumping millions into smear groups, I can win with the same small donors I've had so far"
