Obama Hits McCain For Failing To Support Webb's GI Bill
tpmelectioncentral.talkingpoin… — Barack Obama is giving a speech right now on veterans' issues in West Virginia in which he hits John McCain for failing to back Jim Webb's 21st Century version of the GI bill -- a measure that would cover the...

- korvan504521, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4After reading the article, I fully support the basic concept of the bil, as long as its implemented in a way that rewards hard work in school and punishes slacking. It should also be designed to permit more than just state universities, and include trade and technological schools as well.
But I was under the impression that the current military service already includes pretty hefty college reimbursments, so I'm not sure why we need a seperate bill. - kdawg1012, on 05/12/2008, -4/+17McCain is betraying his fellow veterans by not getting them the services and medical support that they need. And as any veteran knows, betrayal is an unforgivable sin.
- mitchellk, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2The Republican bill provides all of the services, all of the medical support, without the new bureaucracy. This Webb bill is a boondoggle.
- skteoievtehr, on 05/13/2008, -2/+9McCain is all talk. Where is he on this GI Bill? Where is he on creating his own GI Bill if he doesn't agree with this one? And, ahem, what's to disagree with?
- mitchellk, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Actually, he has created his own. It provides all of the benefits without increasing the bureaucracy.
- mmccarthy, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7The speech Obama gave today in Charleston on this issue was great, it really needs digging up if you are willing. This isn't even my submission but I feel its very important. It's barely been covered by the MSM and it's a great speech.
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Barack_Obama_Kee ... - spaceman84, on 05/13/2008, -7/+11The difference between Webb and McCain is that Webb is a REAL hero. During Vietnam, Webb earned the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts.
- Brian48216, on 05/13/2008, -2/+12in no way am I supporting McCain as president, but let's not trivialize McCain's war experience. He chose to stay with the other POWs and refused to be freed first just because his father was an Admiral.
Medals don't always tell the whole story of someone's war experience and their contributions and sacrifices. If we're gonna have to pick apart McCain there's plenty of other material to use.- imgstacke, on 05/13/2008, -3/+8Face it, the only reason McCain is where he is today is because he was a son of an Admiral (and grandson) captured in Vietnam.
894 out of 899 graduates... Bottom of the barrel.- gsxrjason, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2I don't think being captured makes you a hero. Maybe if he fought his way out saving some other POWs I would say that. The Vietnamese people that held him as a POW knew he was the son of an Admiral so he was likely receiving special treatment. I would go as far as brave, but not hero.
- ssn697, on 05/13/2008, -4/+5@gsxrjason
Have you ever read ANYTHING on McCain's time as a POW? It doesn't appear so. How about you ask Bud Day if he thinks McCain is a hero? What, don't know who Bud Day is? Ask Bud Day, and he will tell you he still has arms to use, because of John McCain.
You are a douche for talking about ***** you know NOTHING about, plain and simple.- gsxrjason, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1You are a douche for assuming. Yes, I have read about his time as a POW. He was a prized propaganda prisoner for the enemy. He provided encouragement to fellow POWs. I read up about Bud Day and all I find is him talking about being in a cell next to McCain, possibly helped mending his arms. Am I missing something?
- card51short, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4McCain saved his arms!!! yay McCain!!!
I love how Ron Paul was always attacked when his 4,000 babies delivered was brought up...
BUT JUAN MCPAIN WILL SAVE YOUR ARMS!!!
Working limbs for all! McPain 2008!!!

- mooseontheloose, on 05/13/2008, -10/+2Obama also attacked Americans who drive Volvos and eat sprouts. Who cares what that stereotyping idiot thinks?
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/13/2008, -3/+9The reason that McCain has not endorsed the Webb/Hagel GI Bill enhancement is because he has authored his own bill with Lindsey Graham and Richard Burr.
http://lgraham.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAct ...
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Richard Burr (R-NC), and John McCain (R-AZ) today unveiled the Enhancement of Recruitment, Retention, and Readjustment through Education Act.
The Graham-Burr-McCain bill enhances the existing Montgomery G.I. Bill by improving education benefits for servicemembers, veterans, and members of the Guard and Reserve. The legislation will help more military personnel attend college debt-free, and allow them to transfer their education benefits to their spouse or children. It also bolsters recruitment and retention efforts, encouraging servicemembers to continue their military careers.- MadKennyP, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Retired Army Col. Bob Norton, an education benefits expert with the Military Officers Association of America, said Graham's bill does have some terrific features. But Norton said only the Webb bill delivers on both goals set for GI Bill reform by The Military Coalition, a consortium of service associations and veterans groups. First, it would raise benefits enough to cover at least the average cost of a public college education and has an effective mechanism to keep them there.
Second, it would allow Reserve and Guard members to earn the same GI Bill entitlement as active duty troops, depending on length of active duty service. The Graham/Burr/McCain bill has no such provision, Norton said.

If you want to say that one bill is better than another based on its merits that's fine. However for Obama to say that McCain doesn't care for the troops is disingenuous.

- suzywang3000, on 05/13/2008, -5/+2I love Obama more than I love my own father.
- bhod, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0me too. but my father was a drug user, so i have no respect for him.
- PuterPrsn, on 05/13/2008, -4/+0This is another try at pulling the wool over people's eyes. We don't need this bill - it simply gives what previous ones did. A great promotional gimmick with no extra meat. As usual, Obama hasn't bothered to read up on what the military can get now, he simply steps onto what looks to be a good bandwagon going in his direction.
- bhod, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0blasphemy! please do not criticize obama like that. he doesn't hop on bandwagons just because it's politically correct to do so. that's what mccain does.
gobama!
