Obama Adds To Superdelegate Tally
huffingtonpost.com — Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia has endorsed Obama today, a powerful statement given Obama's recent loss in the state. Byrd said in his statement that "Barack Obama is a noble-hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support."

- EllimistX, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Probably for public image purposes, as he knew Hillary wanted to run for president and it would basically kill her campaign if she got divorced. But now that she lost, he should have a little more freedom to do so. I doubt the press would care as much as if it happened before the campaign.

Hillary and her supporters are only fooling themselves. She's running her campaign into the ground, and her supporters are supporting her because...
really why are they supporting her?
I always got the feeling that Bill Clinton supported Obama from the start, but because of his position as the Senator's husband, he had to keep face about it. - Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -1/+8Delegate change. Time for an update!

- joel8x, on 05/20/2008, -4/+3It proves to me that the people have no say and their votes mean nothing to the Democratic party. I hate Hilary with a passion, but if the majority of that state voted for her, then shouldn't its superdelegates reflect the will of the public they represent? The notion of superdelegates sounds more like a neo-conservative idea than a Democratic one. I wish the popular vote actually meant something.
- damndj, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1I think a better option would be removing voting rights from people in WV.
- HamSandwich, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Yeah, cause that's how democracy works. You're only allowed to vote if you agree with me.
***** you, buddy. - Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I hate to break it to you, but the republic we exist under (votes are for those who act in your best interests) != a democracy (one human, one vote).
You may question the ability of a WV superdelegate to judge their constituents' best interests better than the constituents themselves - but you're questioning the established structure of our government in that.
Not that that's a bad thing. Just be honest about it.
Mind you, the private nature of political parties renders all of this less than academic.
Anyway, Byrd is a WV Senator. He's placed his congressional seat on the table in doing this. He must have faith that Obama is going to be a high tide to raise all ships, his included. As such, he's acting in what he believes is his constituents' best interests, which legally, is all that can be asked.
- HamSandwich, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Yeah, cause that's how democracy works. You're only allowed to vote if you agree with me.
- StarlessKnight, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Delegates reflect the will of the voters. Superdelegates were something tacked on relatively recently (compared to over 200 years of American history) that are like an emergency "Try Again" button for the Democratic leaders in the event the voters were choosing a baby-eating, Satan-worshiping flop... or the planets just weren't aligned right.
- sulthernao, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2A democratic nomination process is also relatively recent, just an FYI for the glorified history that is being taught in schools.
- smotpoker, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4I agree to some extent. If he weren't an elected official in office or if he had committed before their primary, it wouldn't seem so bad, IMO.
That said, super-delegates *do* exist to outweigh votes (and in a way voters, I suppose) in the event that some extreme mitigating factor(s) make it apparent that they should. In the case of WV, there are a couple of legitimate cases for backing Barack:
1 - Through personal discourse and other means, he determined that the majority of voting public was either completely misinformed and mislead into voting in a manner they wouldn't have otherwise
2 - He concluded that since Obama will be the nominee, the best thing he can do to help assure reconciliation and elicit their votes for him in November would be for one of their trusted elected reps to endorse him (Hence mentioning that he's a christian in the endorsement)
Remember: The primary roles of SDs are to assure victory in November (#2) and protect the party as a whole from questionable circumstances that might improperly influence the popular vote [tallies] (#1). This being the case, it is kinda hard to blame him and his endorsement seems legitimate- JaronDiggGuy, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2This.
- damndj, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1I think a better option would be removing voting rights from people in WV.
- HamSandwich, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2West Virginia has 6 superdelegates. They split 3-3 for Hillary and Obama. I wonder just how the other states superdelegates voted. Actually, I'm surprised that Byrd's endorsement has gotten this much attention.
- ownwonnow, on 05/20/2008, -2/+2We don't care. Byrd needs to die already so that the Dems can put another ***** in the Senate for 60 years, and the state can continue our almost century-old downward spiral. 60 years of service, at one point the most powerful man in the Senate, and we're second to last in all of the important things. But hey, he's accomplished a lot during his tenure:
http://www.wvdhhr.org/bph/oehp/hsc/briefs/ten/figu ...
Thanks for the help, Bobby. Now die and contribute something positive to the next graph.
My experience as a West Virginian is that if Byrd likes something/someone, it means there's something in it for him.

- dohidied, on 05/20/2008, -10/+124This brought a tear to my eye. If a former KKK member can support Barack Obama, maybe there's hope for this country after all.
- apophenic, on 05/20/2008, -2/+14Really, I think that's a more powerful statement than the fact that Obama lost in West Virginia.
- sovereign3, on 05/20/2008, -7/+10Did it really bring a tear to your eye?
- dohidied, on 05/20/2008, -0/+10No *****, it honestly did. I don't really know why it affected me that way. I guess seeing all of the interviews with West Virginia voters disheartened me so much and this really made me think that people can change their racist attitudes.

- michelspc, on 05/20/2008, -6/+23As a former KKK member it would be political suicide to endorse Clinton. If he endorsed Clinton he would be accused of being a racist. It's sad but true. This endorsement makes Byrd look good. Kill two byrds (I had to) with one stone. He has ammo for future racist claims and is endorsing the likely nominee.
I am not claiming that Byrd is a racist. I believe people can change. His endorsement just seems to be completely political.- twertyto, on 05/20/2008, -1/+7Senator Byrd is ancient history (90 years old) and a real SOB. I doubt that he cares at this point in his life about looking like a racist. Clinton probably did something to piss him off so he's throwing his support behind Obama just to spite her.
- yojiffyskippy, on 05/20/2008, -7/+2You are probably correct. It's very amusing to see the Obama-bots embracing a former KKK member. They'd sell their soul for super-delegates at this point. I don't know why because Obama has it locked up at this point but it just shows that he's just another politician. Though, twertyto is partly correct too. Byrd is beyond his useful years and probably doesn't have enough mental faculties left to even know who he's supporting.
- taradisiac, on 05/20/2008, -4/+1Actually it comes off as him trying too hard to hide his racisms.
- malex, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9You guys are reaching. Byrd, whatever his other faults may be, renounced racial segregation decades ago, and his voting record in the 108th congress got an unequivocal thumbs up from the NAACP.
The only people who are still worried about his Klan history are the same people who think liberals were too harsh on Helms, Thurmond, and Lott. - sulthernao, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I don't know if that is exactly true. Maybe this is a political move, but after reading Obama's Audacity of Hope, it seems as if Byrd was more than amicable towards Obama in 2004.
- arunforce, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4I just can't see that happening if it was the Republican Party.
- SargedeathXmode, on 05/20/2008, -3/+2I don't know; I think it's safe to say he is not getting reelected in the senators' election. It could be likely that he's vying for a position in the executive branch or maybe even judicial.
- plimpton777, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2That's knee-jerk cynicism for you. Byrd is waaay too old and shakes waaay too much to have any other ambitions. And he has the WV political machine in his pocket; he'll be the senior senator from West Virginia until the day he dies.
- davidrools, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Byrd is one of the most respected persons in the Senate, regardless of his history. Even Obama pays him high esteem. He has for the last few decades regretted his involvement in the KKK, for what it's worth.
- hittnrun, on 05/20/2008, -4/+1OMG, are you fvcking kidding?
- taradisiac, on 05/20/2008, -6/+1It's just a political move. Once a racist...

- drex8, on 05/20/2008, -6/+34Buffet recently announced his support for Obama as well.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080519/ts_alt_afp/ge ...
Don't know or not aware how's that going to help Obama's candidacy, but having the backing of a most renowned economist, and a highly educated intellectual like Warren Buffet, could go a long way. Seems to me that the educated elites are flocking towards Obama, and that can be construed to be a good sign.- minox, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4It's actually spelled "Buffett." Spelling it like you did might make you get humorous thoughts.
- Nougat, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5I still don't understand why being educated makes one "elite." The language of that phrase is very interesting; it defines "being uneducated" as the status quo. It defines those who are educated as somehow excluding less educated people, with a vague inference that the less educated should stand against the educated. On top of class and race and religion and political ideology, we really want to throw differences in education on top of that fire? Really?
Or maybe I got too high smoking my high school diploma.- Bith8654, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Or maybe your just over-thinking his statement way too much.
- Nougat, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2On the contrary, I think the easy way it tends to roll off the tongue and across the keyboard speaks volumes about how people think.
- Bith8654, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Or maybe your just over-thinking his statement way too much.
- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Buffett is a mixed endorsement. I mean, on one hand, he's a renowned and respected economist and businessman. On the other hand, he's occasionally a world-class asshat.
Still, brilliant economist makes me happy.
- burninthepyre, on 05/20/2008, -30/+16I'm going to get dugg down for this like no other, but WTB a "Buried for Obama" option, I'm getting tired of every third topic being Obama.

- yojiffyskippy, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2It's certainly not newsworthy because Obama has the nomination wrapped up at this point. He'd have to do something very stupid to lose it at this point. It would be like McCain announcing every primary result. Even Obama has moved on from the Primary and into the General by starting to directly take on McCain. It seems like only the Obama-bot fanboys on Digg are still getting excited about the super-delegates. But like nasalspray said, this is the season and Digg is Ospama central so you might want to look elsewhere for your reading material.

- facelesscoward, on 05/20/2008, -3/+3I don't think the actual statement that a Muslim president is bad for America is really particularly offensive, seeing as Islam is a set of beliefs and beliefs are typically the bases for how we choose our presidents.
What is offensive is the basis for these statements, which is paranoid neocons thinking Muslim = Arab = terrorist, but seeing as we can't read any individual Digger's mind, I don't think people should be punished for making the assertion that a Muslim president or a Jewish (by religion, not family history) president or a Christian president or a Scientologist president is bad for America, no matter how stupid their opinion may be. - alphaterminus, on 05/20/2008, -8/+2I'm sorry defska42 but I would not vote for a Muslim either. I support and will vote Obama in November.
- OralCavity, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1why wouldn't you vote for someone who follows the faith of Islam?
- alphaterminus, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2Because, OralCavity, Islam is where Christianity was in the Medieval ages. Christian nation-states oppressed the hell out of women and those who dare question their delusional religion then just as Islamic states do now. I would vote for a Christian now because there is no Christian dominated state on the face of the earth, currently, that uses fascist rule to enforce their *****. And I have read the Koran, and it is as full of as much hatred and ***** as the old testimant and Paul's delusions in the new testimant. The only portion of the Bible I respect are the Psalms, Proverbs, and the teachings directly attributed to Jesus. Jesus was cool.
- yojiffyskippy, on 05/20/2008, -4/+2You're pathetic if you're "offended" by someone that believes being a Muslim is a bad thing. Not everyone has the same beliefs as you. Get over it and realize that just because you believe something doesn't make it true or right.

- 26thUSMC, on 05/20/2008, -13/+4he may not be a Muslim, but his daddy is, and he supports Muslims and terrorists completely. They won't vote for him because of irrational hatred.
- radiofrequency, on 05/20/2008, -6/+1Health care plan? More like health care fantasy.
There are 300 million Americans. In 2004, 138 million filed tax returns. Of those, 42 million paid 0 income tax.
How does Obama propose insuring the 47 million (estimated, 2005) Americans with no health care benefits?
If the plan is anything like his energy policy ("We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK") I suppose that means we also can't all have health care.
What does France say we should keep our thermostat level at?- StarlessKnight, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Took the smallest part of kreneskyp's comment and made it the most important aspect of your reply; they didn't even say it was good or bad, they simply acknowledged the issue existed as an example of what people should care about.
- smotpoker, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3"How does Obama propose insuring the 47 million (estimated, 2005) Americans with no health care benefits?"

Interesting... You seem to think the government should provide 0 help to those who need it with necessities and that the people should provide 0 help to themselves, or the government, with cleaning up their own luxury-spawned messes.
Anyway, *that* is not his energy policy, just a currently-necessary request to be responsible - see http://www.barackobama.com/issues/energy/ if you think you can handle a dose of reality
The reason you morons think he his policies have no substance is because you are too lazy to bother with google and require everything spoonfed. RTFM, loser.

"Obama has Eggs for Breakfast this Morning"- mummbleswers, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2You're right, there is a heavy Obama influence on Digg right now, but there has been nothing that ridiculously stupid, and this is a hot topic right now, a lot of people are following this race very closely. That includes the media, late night tv, even WWE. It's going to saturate your life till at least November. Sorry, I agree with you, but it's still big news for such a tight race.
- Pillage, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2you already saw him blow his nose.

- Pillage, on 05/20/2008, -5/+2It isn't politics, It's Propaganda. McCain is bad, here's how, Hillary is bad here's why, Obama will save us all from ourselves and the eevil neo-cons. Someone endorses Obama suddenly is a genius and a great person. Someone endorses McCain, and people troll up things irrelevant things about him, but nevertheless "proves he is evil". If Obama says or does anything wrong it is either dugg down or legitimized by by the widest and most sweeping of arguments, with any opposing argument ignored. - Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4Diggers, by and large, think Obama is the best choice for America. Digg is a user-driven site. Have I lost you yet?
In short, you're going to get a lot of us promoting the person we like, and that's going to result in a lot of pro-Obama / anti-competition stories. You can bitch all you want, but really you've got to convince the user base that Obama isn't a good candidate. Good luck with that; the man's made of teflon. - Pillage, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1that is the problem. They refuse to acknowledge any fault, as it would crack the seamless man they have created. They are fanatics, who want to surround him, and dissuade any attempt to pretend that he is fallible. This is a problem for Obamamaniacs, where is the challenge? There is nothing there to challenge them to want a better president, because in their mind he is the best. He is good, but not great, he is human, and the people who can not admit that he has bad policies are in for a tremendous letdown. They are just shining his glass jaw.
- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Perhaps you have failed to crack his 'glass jaw' because you have failed to provide a sufficiently valid attack to do so? Perhaps what you see as bad policy is a fallacy of your personal philosophy, or what they see as good policy is a fallacy of theirs. Either way, your implicit assumption that there's willful ignorance going on is little but arrogance.

- ColonelJessup, on 05/20/2008, -42/+15A PAID POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT
BY SENATOR BARACK OBAMA (D-IL)
My fellow Americans,
As your future president I want to thank voters of all political stripes for their mindless support, despite my complete lack of any legislative achievement, my pastor’s ties with Louis Farrakhan and Libyan dictator Moamar Quadafi, and my blatantly liberal voting record while I present myself as some sort of bipartisan agent of change.
I also like how my supporters claim my youthful drug use and criminal behaviour somehow qualifies me for the presidency after 8 years of claiming Bush’s drinking disqualifies him. Your hypocrisy is a beacon of hope shining over a sea of political chicanery.
I would also like to thank the Kennedys for coming out in support of me. There’s a lot of glamour behind the Kennedy name, even though JFK started the Vietnam War, his brother Robert illegally wiretapped Martin Luther King Jr., they both slept with Marilyn, and Teddy’s negligence caused the death of a young girl. I’m not going anywhere near the Kennedy cousins, especially Michael Skakel.
And I’d like to thank Oprah Winfrey for her support. Her love of meaningless empty platitudes will be the force that propels me to the White House.
Americans should vote for me, not because of my lack of experience or achievement, but because I make people feel good. White people who vote for me get some relief from their racist guilt.
I say things that sound meaningful but don’t really mean anything because Americans are tired of things having meaning. If things have meaning, then that means you have to think.
Americans are tired of thinking. It’s time to shut down the brain and open up the heart.
So when you go to vote in the primaries, remember don’t think, just do. And do it for me.
Thanking you in advance.
Barack- MarioWhereRu, on 05/20/2008, -10/+8***** you.
- 26thUSMC, on 05/20/2008, -10/+5hey puss, suck it up, he is right lol... Obama supports everything that will kill this country. now go sit in a corner and think how he will do next election after McCain beats him..
- SpinningHead, on 05/20/2008, -1/+6I don't know how you define "killing this country" considering the conservatives have been hurting the country the past 8yrs by every objective and quantitative measure.
- 26thUSMC, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3conservatives have been killing themselves, not the country. nothing good has passed via the congress because of too many negative votes. us conservatives have lost touch in what the party stands for, which is why we lost the "slim" majority we had over the years. but then again, we werent the worst rated congress in history like it is now lol
- SpinningHead, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2So the conservative congress which had low ratings had them because they couldn't get anything passed even though they managed to get constitution-ripping crap like the patriot act, but the current congress which doesnt have enough of a majority to pass anything is the fault of progressives? With thinking like that, I can see why you're voting for McCain.
- 26thUSMC, on 05/20/2008, -10/+5hey puss, suck it up, he is right lol... Obama supports everything that will kill this country. now go sit in a corner and think how he will do next election after McCain beats him..

- reepax, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Do we really want to make a list of all the democrat representatives who have served versus the republican ones? And how is invading Iraq ( a country that was not aggressive towards us and had no intentions of harming us ) providing a safe bed for me at night?
- malex, on 05/20/2008, -2/+2Are you suggesting you're not the least bit disappointed by how the Bush administration has micromanaged this war?
Not when Rumsfeld dismissed responsibly for poor equipment saying "You have to go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you want"?
Not when Bush responded to the growing insurgency in Iraq by saying "Bring it on"? - Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2I apologize for my Marine Corps buddy here. He's partially right - the military are set to obey orders and not think about them any harder than it takes to get the job done. The sense of entitlement and/or superiority for that - well, that's the sole domain of the Marines (and perhaps the Army).
As ex-Navy, I know at least that we had no such pretense. CONER to grease monkey to nuke to officer, we are usually allowed enough time to contemplate things. Anecdotally speaking, most of my shipmates have generally come to the conclusion that the Military is part of the continuum of dependencies that defines any country. The military protects our interests, which support our people, which pay our government, which pay for our equipment, feed our troops, etc, which supports both troops and economy, etc...
That the military is often used for unjust violence is an unfortunate intermingling of their, by definition, violent occupations, and the corruption of those with power.
Presently, those in power are republicans, and specifically, neoconservative republicans. Their agenda is nebulous, but I have at least noticed that it seems to involve keeping military power in strategic locations all over the world - so we can assume, at least, that their agenda is somewhat imperial.
The military has donated the risk of their death to the government, in the hopes of protecting the people they care about. To flex it for an imperialist purpose - or indeed any purpose that takes away from actually defending the nation - is a betrayal bordering on treason.
So yes, the present Administration can be considered partially responsible for the deaths of our soldiers - but also for the deaths of civilians both caught in the crossfire and killed by reactions to the by-proxy actions of our Commander in Chief (that is, the new wellsprings of 'terrorism' that have cropped up in Iraq and Iran, though I've come to notice that they're more actions of self defense, through still-enlisted shipmates and friends in other divisions of the military).
- 26thUSMC, on 05/20/2008, -5/+3hey moron. We choose to be in the military. you just arent man or woman enough to do something for your country. why is it all you dems want want want from your country when the rest of us give/gave it... - Monarch818, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Nope, super delegates vote how they want.
- TheThirdLevel, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0The entire point of being a superdelegate means you can lean either way depending on what you want, dumbass.
- taradisiac, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5No no no you see it's okay to overrule the will of the people when it's for OUR cause.
- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Hm. Interesting assertion. Are you saying that Hillary was winning until Byrd decided to back Obama? Are you saying that not a soul in WV voted for Obama?
- taradisiac, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2I'm saying that if it happened the other way around you'd all be crying foul play.
- JaronDiggGuy, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1No "we" wouldn't. Early on, Hillary decided to start soliciting superdelegates to change their votes from Obama to her and reminding them that they can vote for whomever they please. This IS the other way around.
- Fordi, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Hm. Interesting assertion. Are you saying that Hillary was winning until Byrd decided to back Obama? Are you saying that not a soul in WV voted for Obama?

- SargedeathXmode, on 05/20/2008, -11/+5Wow, and I thought Hilary was the one who wanted to go above the people's votes and get the politicians' favor. Politicians disgust me more everyday. - digbird, on 05/20/2008, -6/+3Umm, I seem to recall people saying that the super-delegates shouldn't overturn the popular vote. I guess that doesn't count if the voters of a state are for Hillary and the super-delegate decides to go with Obama anyway.
Not that I care, but it's amazing to see how inconsistent people are.- StarlessKnight, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3More delegates, more superdelegates, more popular vote. Where's the inconsistency?
- digbird, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1well, one might wonder how the people of West Virginia feel about Byrd overturning their very definitively expressed preference for Hillary...and one might equally wonder how the Obama supporters might feel if a super-delegate from North Carolina decided that he or she didn't give a damn about the popular vote in their state, that they were voting for Hillary.
- coolkatz321, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1The same can be said for Massachusetts, where Clinton won by ~18%... then their two senators went for Obama.

- warlokaz2004, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9You know things are bad when the 90 year old ex-KKK guy breaks with the voters of his own state. He's saying to them "You all seriously won't vote for the half black guy? I mean come on."

For you Obama supporters, you'd really better make your voices heard that you'll not put up with any "Kennedy-like" occurrences. You have no idea what he's up against.
