New McCain Ad Attacks Obama Kids
huffingtonpost.com — In what might be his most controversial attack ad in a campaign dominated by them, presumptive G.O.P. presidential nominee John McCain today launched a new TV spot attacking Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill)'s two children.

Hypocrites...liberals are hypocrites.

- dcmjzero, on 08/27/2008, -1/+13is that sarcasm? i can't tell anymore.
- Unison8, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3It's not about the attack. It's the 'how' and the 'what' of the attack.
There's a huge difference between Obama's attack, "McCain's policies are 95 percent in line with Bush's policies", and McCain's attack, "Obama is a pure celebrity with no substance, y'know just like Brittney and Paris".
One is true, the other is *****.

- mudpuddle, on 08/27/2008, -6/+7 Yeah, I also have no inference abilities whatsoever. I wish authors would annotate their writing with helpful hints like "SATIRE" or "I WAS BEING SARCASTIC BACK THERE". It would make their writing so much more effective!

- reaper527, on 08/27/2008, -8/+8huffington post... a legitimate news site? i think you forgot your sarcasm tags. huffington is nowhere near legitimate. its off the deep end liberal and has zero credibility.
- stagmire, on 08/27/2008, -5/+4I would bang the ***** out of Arianna Huffington. She is a total hottie for a 58 year-old.
Fact: in the 1980s, Arianna Huffington was married to a Republican millionaire politician douche who (surprise!!!) turned out to be a flaming *****. Being the entrepreneur that she is, she summarily divorced him and took a big chunk of his money and used it to launch her career as an insightful and thought provoking journalist.
You can't do better than Arianna Huffington. There's a saying: looks, brains, money, pick two. But Arianna's got all three. She's a higher form of life. Republican idiots who slam her should take a look in the mirror and consider suicide. - mechnoch, on 08/27/2008, -2/+1@mudpuddle

While some critics questioned how well the ad would play in living rooms across America, Sen. McCain defended it, telling reporters, "It played very well in all of my living rooms."
/sarcasm

/fixed that for you
Oh, wait, were you being sarcastic back there? Sorry, I really can't tell these things when they're not properly tagged. - jgzman, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2I must point out that I have searched in vain for a /sarcasm tag on almost every McCain ad I've seen so far. It's like a corollary to Poe's Law, almost.
- JoeF8577, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2i see, yes, I see what you did there.
- rblancarte, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Thank you Captain Obvious
- chispito, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Well seeing as the writeup doesn't mention it, and it's filed under "2008 U.S. Elections" instead of offbeat or political opinion at least, I'd say it was necessary to point out. It's also a remarkably un-funny parody, adding to the confusion.
- playuhh, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Huffington WISHES they were the Onion...

- omnis, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Be serious, no you cannot. You just think it's popular to bash McCain here and that's why you just said that. Not everyone thinks Obama is perfect and McCain an idiot.
- walkertexas69, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Actually it was a comment on the state of politics and attack ads in general... I'm Canadian and don't care about Obama or McCain....
- rdr97, on 08/27/2008, -6/+51I know I'll get buried for this, but that parody wasn't very funny at all.
- OMGWTFROFLMAOx2, on 08/26/2008, -5/+32Read the fine print at the bottom of the article.
- ElNeenyo, on 08/27/2008, -3/+5Yeah, if it was funny you wouldn't have to read the fine print. It reads like some kid's poor attempt at an Onion article. Andy Borowitz writes for the New Yorker? Their notorious cover was a far better attempt at satire than this hacky crap.
- cyberoptic, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2by "fine print" he means "regular size font"
- alaskanassassin, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2he probably means the article, which most diggers never read before commenting.
- modernjazz, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1It says the guy is a comedian and a writer and then lauds all of his great accomplishments. The fine print actually says nothing about the nature of this article. Dennis Miller is also a comedian (albeit a blacklisted one). Am I to assume that everything he says and writes is a parody?
- rblancarte, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3When you have to explain the joke, it probably wasn't that funny.
- Wilarseny, on 08/26/2008, -6/+160Does that say something about the rest of his ads that it took me until a little while in the article to get that it was a parody?
- ruinedbydesign, on 08/26/2008, -6/+15though I wouldn't put it past him. :P
- vexingmodstwo, on 08/26/2008, -19/+13It says a lot about your warped sense of reality, but not much else.
- Wilarseny, on 08/26/2008, -1/+16I mean, I'm no huge Obama apologetic like a lot of people on these boards, but ads like the Ayers one, or the Biden/Clinton on Obama are just attacks for no legit policy reason. They play on peoples' fears about BO's race, and make little mention of policy. They're divisive and ruthless, and while Obama's ads lately are not a whole lot better, this is more of a trend with McCain's ads, not even to mention his statements. Come on, to allege that the other candidate is seeking the office of POTUS only to appease his own desperate need for political power is low and baseless.
- vexingmodstwo, on 08/26/2008, -18/+10The Ayers ad serves a very real political purpose. Obama LIED about the relationship with this unrepentent domestic terrorist and communist.
Do you understand this? Obama LIED about the relationship. - Diggnabbit, on 08/26/2008, -5/+10He really didn't.
- Wilarseny, on 08/26/2008, -1/+10Sure, it proves a political purpose, but not a policy one. It's a character slam, and worse I think most of the labels both McCain and Obama throwing around are simply invalid. On this specific issue, perhaps our original sources disagree. Yes, he chaired an organization Ayers started, but that's the extent to which I've seen the relationship proven. Care to link me toward where he's lied? I'm not being sarcastic, just curious. I've seen a lot of fingerpointing here and no real evidence.
That being said, that ad wasn't even put out by McCain's campaign, which is something I should've noted above. What about the whole "The One" ad? I suppose you could say criticizing someone for not earning their celebrity is valid, but it really has no direct relevance to the campaign in terms of specific issues. That's what I hate about all these ads, both McCain's the and the newer, more "aggressive" Obama ones: there's no substance, just label throwing. "Out of touch", "Celebrity", and so on and so forth. There's no dialogue on policy in a single one of them. - vexingmodstwo, on 08/27/2008, -10/+9Diggnabbit, he really did. "Some guy in my neighborhood" isn't even close to an accurate portrayal of their relationship.
Wil, when asked about the relationship Obama said he was just a guy who lived in his neighborhood and tried to leave it at that until Hillary Clinton brought up the fact that Obama served on board with Ayers.
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/DemocraticDebate/St ...
He lied. Not only did he know Ayers and work with Ayers, his campaign for State Senate STARTED in Ayers' house. - soot, on 08/27/2008, -3/+8Barack Obama lived in the same area of Chicago as Ayers, and Ayers has been a politically active member of that community for years. Considering that, it’s actually remarkable how little the two have to do with each other. Early in Barack Obama’s career, he attended one reception in his honor at Ayers’s house. They also were separately asked by a charitable organization to serve on that organization’s board. And that’s it. There’s no friendship between the two, no relationship, no history of working together.
- vexingmodstwo, on 08/27/2008, -9/+8Wrong, soot. You're misrepresenting the facts.
Ayers was the CO-FOUNDER of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge and CHOSE Obama to be the board chair.
The records were sealed until today. We'll know more about their working relationship soon. - soot, on 08/27/2008, -4/+8The Annenberg Institute does good work.
Unless they comitted a crime together or something... I really don't give a *****. - vexingmodstwo, on 08/27/2008, -9/+9Ah, now that there's proof Obama lied about the relationship you don't care. How convenient.
- soot, on 08/27/2008, -6/+6I'll wait until there's more about this before I jump the shark like you. You can also be kind enough to throw me a link while you're at it.
Then again, when are you not at it. - novaculus, on 08/27/2008, -8/+3Wil:
Consider the remarks about the old guy from the neighborhood, the English professor, whom Obama claimed he didn't share ideas with, to the reality:
http://www.usnews.com/blogs/barone/2008/8/22/obama ...
http://globallabor.blogspot.com/2008/08/behind-ann ...
There is no question that Obama has attempted to mislead the voters regarding the nature and extent of his relationship with Ayers.
The overriding reason is apparent: They know this relationship is Kryponite for Superbama. In the closed circle of Chicago politics, association with Ayers would not be fatal. But when Obama raised his sights from the Mayor's Office to the White House, Ayers became toxic.
As for committing a crime together, suppose they didn't. Suppose that these records prove not only a lengthy and close political alliance in city politics. Suppose those records reveal that they blew through $160 million bucks, with no measurable benefits to the students it was intended to help. Suppose the records show hundreds of thousands of dollars to Ayers old radical friends from the '60s, and their often radical, even screwy programs? Suppose they show major expenditures for political activists and their groups, engaging in political battle with Mayor Daley for control of the schools? Suppose it is learned that Obama exploited some of those same political organizations for his own campaign? It is, after all, Chicago. It is the Chicago way.
There is already ample evidence to support every one of those suppositions, and the CAC records will add to that evidence. The strategy and tactics are pure Alinsky, as are those of his current campaign.
No crime? Probably not. But it paints a picture which is in sharp contrast to Obama's crafted image of the new and different entity in politics, the bringer of hope and change. Will the true believers be able to manage the inevitable cognitive dissonance? More importantly, will Middle America accept his long friendship and political alliance with the Marxist and unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers, and his attempts to deceive them about it? - housewarmer, on 08/27/2008, -3/+6Regarding the whole Ayers thing - who the ***** cares? The man Ayers was in his youth is obviously not the man he is now. Even if Obama and he were best friends, this would not be sinister. I don't know if Obama lied about their relationship or didn't (all I've heard is conjecture) - but if he did it was because he knew that there would be rightwing jackoffs that would ignore recent history an make a scene. Guess he was right.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 08/27/2008, -2/+5@Novaculus: Wow, a link to an opinion piece and a random blog.
The credibility here is mind-blowing.
Show me some this "ample evidence," and I'll consider believing you. As it stands you have nothing but wild suppositions and hear-say to offer me. That you dedicate so much time and energy to the repeating of such worthless drivel is sad. - consonance, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2Regarding people in their youths... I'm sure you've heard somewhere that Hillary Clinton used to be in the College Republican's organization?
- winampman2, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4@vexingmodstwo: read housewarmer's post.
You don't seem to understand that Ayers is an old 64 year man now. He did some bad things in the LATE SIXTIES, and hasn't done anything illegal since then. Obama's relationship with Ayers didn't start until THIRTY years later, in 1999, where they served together on the Woods Fund of Chicago, an anti-poverty, philanthropic foundation established in 1941. So horrible! Obama neglected to mention his relationship with Ayers because people like you would obviously jump on Ayer's past to use against him, just like you did in this thread.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_ayers - vexingmodstwo, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2I want to know why Obama lied about the relationship and is now trying to use the government to squash it.
Yeah, I would have jumped on him because Ayers is a terrorist who never showed remorse about what he did except that he wishes they'd done more. - Wilarseny, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Vexing: taking all of what he said, I would say he gave a fairly accurate answer. Keep in mind, that debate was complete *****, and he was grilled on Rev. Wright and why he wouldn't wear a flag pin lapel.
Since you'll quote only a sentence, I'll put his whole response up:
George, but this is an example of what I'm talking about. This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who's a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He's not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.
And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn't make much sense, George.
The fact is that I'm also friendly with Tom Coburn, one of the most conservative Republicans in the United States Senate, who, during his campaign, once said that it might be appropriate to apply the death penalty to those who carried out abortions.
Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn's statements? Because I certainly don't agree with those, either.
So this kind of game in which anybody who I know, regardless of how flimsy the relationship is, that somehow their ideas could be attributed to me, I think the American people are smarter than that. They're not going to suggest somehow that that is reflective of my views, because it obviously isn't.
***
I don't see this as a huge issue. You're going to say that I'm apologizing for him, but at this point I doubt I'll even vote for the guy so that's not really the case. My point, which I don't feel has been addressed, is that these ads, the whole of them, are all character attacks rather than policy issues. Sure, one can always say, "honest is a policy," and so on and so forth, but I really don't buy that. Your ability to do everything short of slandering your opponent should not be the test of the presidential campaign, and that's essentially what it is anymore. It's not about developing sound policy positions, because people don't listen to those, and nuance and complexity won't fit into a soundbyte. - Wilarseny, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1@novaculus: How many education programs are there on the South Side with no record of improving student success? Too many to count. It's a huge issue, and basically no one has been able to do much about it. Blowing through tax money? A lot has been blown through down there, for sure, but a lot more is very well-spent. You want to talk Saul Alinsky with me? You want to talk TWO and Arthur Brazier? I will go on for days . I live in the Hyde Park/Woodlawn area, and know a fair bit about the history of the area. Obama has been a South Side supporter for a long time, and the history of TWO goes back well before his time--I'd suggest you do some reading on The Woodlawn Organization, TWO for short, before you make comments about this. They have received extensive federal funding for programs like the one Obama was on the board for, and undermining the Chicago power structure has been a constant struggle in their camp. The Chicago political system largely ignored Woodlawn and the larger southside, and at its worst actively antagonized poor neighborhoods, so organizing to fight these outside sources of strife is, in my opinion, justifiable. As for his current campaign mirroring Alinsky tactics, sure, of course they do. Alinsky was a true genius of political organization, and while some groups he started may have lost their way a bit recently (TWO, I'm looking at you), there is no disputing he was instrumental in organizing and mobilizing the black community and the workers' community in the last half-century. Since gathering the support of the black community en masse has been one of the goals of the Obama campaign, and one I think they've been extremely successful in executing, it would make sense that the Alinsky approach would be an effective way to gather that support.
- novaculus, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Wil:
(1) Assuming such a history of failure for school reform efforts exists, it is hardly a justification for further failure. And these were city-wide programs, not just South Side programs.
(2) It wasn't taxpayer money.
(3) The donations were raised on the promise that the money would be spent on helping students toward better achievement. The diversion of those donations to building political infrastructure and furthering purely political goals is disgraceful.
(4) Alinsky was intelligent and shrewd. He was also a Marxist and an utter cynic for whom the ends justified the means. That includes concealing your real agenda from those you organize, the better to reflect their agendas, remaining a blank slate upon which those who "hope" for "change" can scrawl their dreams. Having organized and energized those you have deceived, you then exploit them for your own political ends. That is pure Alinsky, and Obama is following that strategy to the letter. He should take no pride in it, nor should you.
- afruff23, on 08/27/2008, -10/+11I think it says something about the quality of writing at Huffington Post. Not that I support McCain (or Obama or anyone else for that matter, but HuffPo is completely biased and sometimes downright laughable (the bad kind of laughable):
http://digg.com/business_finance/Why_Does_John_McC ...- Wilarseny, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3Yea, that headline was embarrassing. Basically like asking why x candidate hates "the children".
- ousthouse, on 08/27/2008, -10/+5That shows something about your bias.
- Wilarseny, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1You know nothing about my politics. You honestly think you can make the claim that I've drunk teh koolaid from one line I say in jest in a Digg comment? You're kidding yourself. What I dislike is dirty, character-focused campaigning. Just because you can do everything but (and sometimes including) slandering your opponent doesn't mean you should be elected. Until one of these candidates shows me issues and policy-based advertising I will continue to slam BOTH of their adverts. My bias is anti-idiot, not liberal or conservative.
- TheInformer, on 08/27/2008, -10/+4It says, unfortunately, that you've been listening a little too much to the Obama myrmidons and their constant drivel about McCain. They've begun to infect you. Don't let them. You're too smart for that.
Huffingtonpost is now really cranking out the spewage, aren't they? The ad is *obviously* a parody, but Huffingtonpost portrays it as something else. Libel might even be a good word. If Huffingtonpost does this with this ad, what else are they warping, distorting, and not telling the truth about? It gets clearer the more of these articles they publish.
Huffingtonpost spewage^2. I don't really think I tend to bash people, but in any case, I hope people understand that it's more a joke and a jab than anything. I think both campaigns have been dirty lately, McCain's started a bit earlier but BO's playing catch-up now. Why this is good satire, and why there's a -60~ digg comment on the top of the page that doesn't realize this, is that it's really not outside the scope of political advertising on *either* side. I can see how my comment would be taken as a purely anti-McCain stance, but it's not. It's an anti-idiot stance. It's an anti-unsubstantive debate stance. I don't give a ***** about character attacks. I care about policy, and no one's taking the time to discuss that specifically, on either side. Well, maybe Mark Warner, but even that's a stretch.
- blakecr, on 08/26/2008, -11/+71A second ad featuring Obama's youngest child has just been released comparing Sasha to Sponge Bob.
Here is the transcript:
"Sasha Obama may not live under the sea, but she is against drilling here and drilling now, a long time stance from playful adventurer Sponge Bob Square Pants.
Do you want a Presidents kids to be for wearing square pants?
I am John McCain and I wear diapers not square pants.

McPotus.
A senile and entirely stoned Scottish marijuana-rights activist. - topgigmedia, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1McCain running for president is more like partisan syndication - the same old crap from the GOP. I view myself to have somewhat average intelligence. Not necessarily saying that McCain isn't "out of touch" - just that his wealth wouldn't be the sole reason if he is. Because pretty much any politician, Republican, Democrat, or otherwise, is filthy rich.

- JWTHT, on 08/27/2008, -19/+2Political Junkie Jeff’s review of three media sources (plus my own analysis):
MSNBC: Did a poll measuring response to:
Did Hillary help Obama: 24%
Did Hillary help Hillary: 76%
Chris Mathews and Keith Oberman actually got on screen, announced the results, and then both argued how the number could not possibly be right. Their own poll! And then……Keith Oberman actually got out his cell phone and stated he was going to vote some more to get the result accurate. I could hardly believe my eyes and ears.
ABC: Sam Donaldson talked about he thinks they should talk about the Supreme Court nominee power more. And went on a diatribe about how an “Activist Judge” is labeled as such when republicans don’t like his actions. At least another of their talking heads had the judgment to say “I think that goes for both sides”, but old Sam was unabashedly biased and giving his advice on what Dems need to do to win.
Fox, the “Conservative” network, had on Hillary’s campaign manager (Terry McCaulliff) and gave him considerable air time to present the Democratic viewpoint of the convention thus far. AND, Spike Lee walking past a Fox camera saying “I don’t do Fox”. Gave both sides surrogates airtime.
Not only is McCain running a better ad campaign simply using videos of Democrats speaking with their own free will (So called “negative ads” that are plain truth, non altered video of the core of the Democratic elite stating explicitly that Obama is not Commander in Chief material YET), but the Republicans are targeting and spending their money in a wiser manner. The Dems wont advertise heavy on Fox - part of their “tenure” and “protect our own” culture. But Fox has three times or more the audience of MSNBC, and in raw numbers, more Democrat viewers than MSNBC. And Ed Rendell (Democratic icon from PA) said it best: The media has built up Obama as a Messiah figure, and that is a hard role to fulfill. Compared him to Adlai Stevenson as a very bright but aloof figure. If Obama is directing a campaign that is so politically inept as to write off the Fox audience, how can they possibly expect me to trust them to see the world as it is to solve the great challenges our nation faces?
I can’t wait for more. Obama looks small. Small next to Hillary, Small next to Bill, and Small next to John. And worst of all for his campaign, Small next to Joe (No wonder they don’t want to show the two on stage together any more than they absolutely have to do)
NoBAMA on Energy(No new drilling, no new nukes, no new clean Coal - just the forms of Alternative Energy that will make Nancy Pelosi richer, and keep dictator oil freighters polluting their way across the Atlantic for a longer period of time) , NoBAMA on Commander in Chief, NoBAMA on the Economy, NoBAMA on Taxes (even though for 2009-2010 I would probably do better with NoBAMA, but no carrot to reach for the stars), NoBAMA on socialized medicine, NoBAMA on would have lost the war ALREADY in Iraq (His cohorts Reed and Pelosi actually declared it lost), NoBAMA on appeasing Russian rolling tanks into Georgia just as they did to multiple other Eastern European countries, and real Democratic heroes like JFK would have held the same position as John McCain, NoBAMA period.
Democrats equate McCain with Bush as their primary strategy and rousing call to action. Intelligent people can review the policy proposals, available on each candidates websites, and determine on their own that McCain is no Bush. So the real question of the campaign should and will be with a decent campaign by McCain –Change to WHAT?, Yes We Can WHAT? And who has the best judgment and character and experience to achieve the What.- isaaciaggard, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3Your attempt at intelligence is a bit undermined when you use retarded stock phrases, e.g., "NoBAMA."
And anyway, Obama has repeatedly said he'd consider nuclear power, but I'm sure the specifics of your argument aren't important.
And: Fox News may have the largest audience, but it so obviously panders conservative ("terrorist fist bump") and it is so obviously...what's the word...retarded (see: Bill O'Reilly)... that to support the network would be akin to shooting one's self in the foot, only in this analogy you're retarded, the gun is Fox News, and your foot is...
Well. It'd be retarded.
But I'm sure you've considered all this, so that when you troll and cut and paste your long, stupid post on every internet site you can find, you're confident in your ability to completely disregard the particular news story/digg post and just spew whatever it was you intended to spew.
Cheers. - JWTHT, on 08/27/2008, -1/+0Yeah, It's almost as intelligent as "McCain more of the Same" written by the Chosen One.
