- publiclurker, on 08/20/2008, -3/+12Repeated lying does not change the facts. I'd have you look at who owns each media outlet, but that would imply that you were even moderately interested in the truth. Something that has a well known liberal slant.
- InetRoadkill, on 08/20/2008, -2/+13That's not quite correct. A media watchdog group did a study comparing the coverage of Obama vs. McCain. They found that Obama was getting more coverage, but it was for things like his former pastor saying stupid ***** or his battle with Hillary rather than discussing Obama's campaign platform.
- ftx437, on 08/20/2008, -18/+4Also Obama has had WAY more time in the msm then Mccain has..(recent trip to Europe ring a bell?)
- publiclurker, on 08/20/2008, -0/+13What about that trip was not newsworthy?
- hipnerd, on 08/20/2008, -0/+13McCain challenged Obama to make such a trip. And how could you not cover it? Obama was wildly popular overseas, drawing enormous crowds. Having a U.S. president that is loved around the world would not be a bad thing.
- n00ptic, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10Yes, Obama has gotten more coverage. However, Since roughly March most of Obama's media coverage has been negative while McCain is a lot closer to 50/50 negative/positive. This was all covered extensively in a George Mason University study released last month.
So, do you really think the media is helping Obama if they're constantly pushing negative stories? I'd say it's more likely that the coverage follows the front runner and negative stories draw more eyes, along with a close race just being inherently more interesting. Now that McCain finally appears to have narrowed Obama's lead, however, I expect the coverage will balance out a bit. Plus, McCain is no longer on the friendly terms he once was with the press, and his campaign has been downright belligerent to them in recent months. So, on a personal level, they will probably be more inclined to cover him critically. - nick1971, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7250K Germans took a day of work and stood in 35 degree Celsius to hear a speech in a foreign language.

One reason is that the MSM is owned by big business which typically supports the GOP. Another reason is that the MSM are cowards. His campaign is being run by the same neocons that brought Dubya to power.
He lies the way he does because it is what the people want to hear. They don't want the truth, they want "America's best days are ahead of us" not, "America's best days might be ahead of us, long term, but, because of the damage done by the Bush Administration, the next few years are going to hurt." Which is much closer to reality.
They don't want to hear that drilling won't help, so when McCain says it will help, they jump on the bandwagon.
We the people have an illness, and it is media created. And only with the help of the media can it be contained. But they don't want to help. They want to chase headlines, which means if a story(like McCain and offshore drilling) heads in one direction, they will follow it, even if it is a red herring, while the real story(offshore drilling won't help) gets away from them.

- TheRhinoceros, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3poprocks, I have a question. what is hilarious about the word neocon? perhaps a thought or two about neoconservatism.
"Neoconservatism... originated in the 1970s as a movement of anti-Soviet liberals and social democrats in the tradition of Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Humphrey and Henry ('Scoop') Jackson, many of whom preferred to call themselves 'paleoliberals.' [After the end of the Cold War]... many 'paleoliberals' drifted back to the Democratic center... Today's neocons are a shrunken remnant of the original broad neocon coalition. Nevertheless, the origins of their ideology on the left are still apparent. The fact that most of the younger neocons were never on the left is irrelevant; they are the intellectual (and, in the case of William Kristol and John Podhoretz, the literal) heirs of older ex-leftists.
For the neoconservatives, religion is an instrument of promoting morality. Religion becomes what Plato called a noble lie. It is a myth which is told to the majority of the society by the philosophical elite in order to ensure social order... In being a kind of secretive elitist approach, Straussianism does resemble Marxism. These ex-Marxists, or in some cases ex-liberal Straussians, could see themselves as a kind of Leninist group, you know, who have this covert vision which they want to use to effect change in history, while concealing parts of it from people incapable of understanding it."
Both are quotes from Michael Lind

"The McCain team has constructed a persona that can attack at will, but can never be attacked. They have used McCain's POW history to create a firewall to shield him from all criticism, and as a universal qualifier for all things that pertain to foreign policy or to the military.
Here are some examples:
- Any question of McCain's integrity is instantly an insult to all military personnel and all veterans who have ever served.
- Any opposition to McCain's ideas must be prefaced with a disclaimer honoring his military service.
- Any McCain misstep or gaffe is instantly forgiven because he was once a Prisoner of War, and must be honored as such.
- John McCain's war hero status overrides the Ten Commandments, because according to Sean Hannity, his adultery is erased by the fact that he was imprisoned in Vietnam.
The Legend of John McCain(TM) has been perpetuated by the Republican party and the Corporate Media to crush all dissent and create a teflon candidate that is beyond reproach.
I have to say it is a masterstroke, because it allows McCain to create his own narrative to any group he chooses. He picked up the Solzhenitsyn story, which is a common Christian fable, and made it his own. He knew that it couldn't really be disproven, and that The Legend of John McCain(TM) would shield the story from further scrutiny. His support of the continued occupation of Iraq is an economic nigh(TM)are, costing taxpayers over $12 Billion a month, but who can question the military knowledge and expertise of The Legend of John McCain(TM)? His foreign policy is tainted by the lobbyists he employs, and his tough guy diplomacy has been a proven failure over the last eight years of the Bush Administration, but The Legend of John McCain(TM) is more American than you are and he just knows how to deal with those pesky Commies…"- TheRhinoceros, on 08/20/2008, -1/+20I will hit him despite his status as war hero. It does not make him a great man. Just a victim of the VC. It does not excuse his pandering. It does not excuse his *****, like the fake cross in the dirt story.
He lessens every Vietnam vet every time he states his status as a P.O.W. There were Thousands of P.O.W's, and yet he's the only one who exploits it for political gain, weak minded fool that he is. That is a mistake he will pay for politically, both short and long term.
He can't be attacked? That crap don't fly. His status as a P.O.W. means nothing since he's decided to exploit it.
That doesn't mean I think Obama is wonderful or anything like that. He's not. He's better than McCain, but it would be difficult to NOT be better than McCain. I HATE the fact that this goofball McCain thinks he can get away with exploiting his captivity. Just because the press let's it go doesn't mean we should.
The strength of Obama's campaign was created with a groundswell of support from the working class and middle class that McCain, Bush and their cronies have continually exploited. That same groundswell will crush this weak attempt at a veneer of invulnerability into dust.

I think arguably, that McCain would be WORSE than our current president GWB. Yet he is winning, without a comprehensive healthcare plan, a lame energy plan (drill, drill, drill), and outside of vouchers, vouchers, vouchers, does he even have an education platform? The man is talking dangerously to the Russians, making idle threats that we cannot back up. Yet he is winning? Where is the media? -GOOD. The only thing I want done to healthcare is to allow nurse practitioners greater freedom and the ability to buy drugs from anywhere. Not huge changes... but something we could convince mccain of.
a lame energy plan (drill, drill, drill)
-GOOD. I like lame energy plans. The private sector seems to be handling it quite well. Even that texas wind nutjob (pickens?) seems to be in on it. Google and other private companies are heavily investing in R&d. The least thing I want is for government to be wasting my money on hair brained energy plans like ethanol.
and outside of vouchers, vouchers, vouchers, does he even have an education platform?
-GOOD. Has anything helped education in the past 30 years? Nope. And we've tried everything. Maybe its about time we tried vouchers and put the power back in the hands of students/parents/teachers/principals... instead of big bureaucracy.

He's a liar in a sea of liars. It takes time for the truth to appear and as soon as Obama gets off a campaign that is directed at thinkers and not average American trying to get by, the more off the point he gets. The POINT is that he has to tie McCain as an extension of Bush and by proxie hurts nearly everyone who had voted in Bush and all those who voted against him. Tie him as one of the major proponents of the failed invasion and occupation of Iraq for starters, the economy of Phil Graham and the Reps, and throw in what used to be a Justice Department and following the rule of law!! And, STOP PRAISING MCCAIN"S PATRIOTISM!!! He is no longer a Patriot and hasn't been since the Keating Five. And call him on ALL the decisions he has supported in the Senate that negatively affect 98% of the population of America. In the words of Hall and Oates, "What have you done for me lately?" And even more important, what is he capable of doing in the future? It all ready hurts. Haven't we had enough??
- nick1971, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4I think one should be very careful in using the word patriot as a positive adjective when it is the name of a set of legislation which has rolled back civil liberties to a level not seen since the 30's in a G8 country

If anything, I think they're letting a lot of things slip by because they don't want Obama to be seen as "the black candidate". Some of the criticism has been racist. For instance, some people refuse to just use "Barack Obama" as he prefers and insist on using "B. Hussein Obama". We all know that's his middle name, but why does it need to be pointed out over and over again? They do it because it's a name that many people associate with Arabs and (thanks to Saddam) evil. http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/20/ ... - AYork, on 08/20/2008, -4/+4To start, if the election were held today, I'd vote Obama. I think his policies and ideas are, on the whole, much better than McCain's. But that said, I just can't let some of these statements stand. Logic has been thrown out the window.
1) Energy policy: No real energy plan could affect anything for ten years, minimum. We're going to have to build a lot of stuff no matter what plan is put in place, and that will take time. Anything this big will take at least a decade to be seriously impacted, regardless. Also, the article says drilling will not significantly affect gas prices. McCain says it will give us energy independence. Those two claims are not mutually exclusive. Gas could cost more than it does now, and McCain's goal of energy independence could still be valid.
2) The Veteran's bill : One statement doesn't make a whole lot of sense "The only change made to Webb's bill was a transferability provision... and it was one that Webb said had been in the bill for six years". How can it be both a change and something that had been there for six years? Also, McCain says "this bill will better help our troops." Well, funding troops in combat will help them. Troops with no armor is bad, but so is giving them more money? You can't have it both ways. We shouldn't be over there at all, but we shouldn't hold back support (men, money, and material) for the troops that are there now. That's just another way to sacrifice troops on the altar of politics.
3) Flip-flops: You can't really compare Obama to McCain here. I agree that McCain has a lot more flip flops than Obama, but then again, he's been in the Senate for 26 (1982-2008) years vs Obama's 3 (2005-2008). It's like saying there's more good music made in the 1960's and 1970's than there is "today." True, but not really fair.
Again, McCain is not someone I want as President. I think he will be, at BEST, marginally better than Bush. But if you're going to hit him, please use good logic.- vexingmodstwo, on 08/20/2008, -3/+2I applaud you for being fair-minded. But I need to ask you which Obama policies you think are better... because from my perspective, I don't see any. I see wealth redistribution, increased government spending, and tax policies that will put the brakes on an already weak economy.
Where's the good stuff?- AYork, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2Energy policy: Although I do like McCain's nuke power stance (will build 30(?) reactors in the next 20(?) years vs "meh" from Obama), Obama's overall plan is more long term . McCain focuses on clean coal, offshore drilling, that kind of thing. Sticking with primarily fossil fuels, just doing it better and smarter. This is fine for the short term, but not so good for the long term. Obama focuses more on renewable power (wind, solar, etc), which is not as good for the short term, but MUCH better for the long term. And the long term is more important. But don't see a false dichotomy here; both have planks on both aspects; I'm just talking about where the focus is.
Iraq : Obama got a LOT of respect from me when he changed his stance after coming back from Iraq. It went from "Out of there ASAP" to "Well....we'll have to see how it goes as we go." It shows he responds to new information. I like that. He is dedicated to getting us out (and we shouldn't be there; it's a civil war now and our presence will only make things worse), but he's being a realist about it. I like dedicated realists.
Economy : ... I don't think either one has said or planned anything real or effective regarding the economy, so that's a wash.
"War on Terror": McCain supports Bush's policies too highly. I see the current policies as sacrificing freedom for security, and that is counter to what I think this nation stands for. Obama is wishy washy on it, but at least he doesn't loudly support it. It leaves the door open for the possibility that some of this stuff might go away. McCain doesn't offer such a chance.
GOP : I am pissed off at the GOP. I know it's petty, but I've been a loyal Republican since I did a grammar school project during Reagan's 1984 campaign; it was my first real exposure to politics. But Bush really pissed me off. I'm a Conservative. The GOP bills itself as Conservative, and that's why I've always supported them. But the last 8 years have shown that they are now anything but. Clinton was more Conservative than Bush (small govt size, fewer intrusions into personal and commercial life, reduced budget). I have no faith that McCain will reverse any of the anti-Conservative policies of Bush (Patriot act, DHS, Prescription drug bill, massive increase in govt spending and size). Obama.....maybe. I'll go with the ""maybe" over the "no freakin' way" any day. - vexingmodstwo, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2Okay... fair enough.
I urge you to look into the economic policies. Obama's tax scheme is going to put the brakes on the economy. As a conservative, you'll definitely see it if you want to. - AYork, on 08/20/2008, -0/+0I've looked at them before (granted it's been a few months) and most of his tax stuff isn't all that radical. He's jacking up Social Security, which is pointless. It's throwing good money after bad, but it's not exactly going to wreck the economy.
Closest I see is the capital gains stuff. He's increasing established max capital gains, but he plans to eliminate or reduce it for new investments, including farmland and startup companies. I can see how people could balk at the big max gains increase, but that helps pay for the cut for the newbies. Kind of balances out in the end; hurts established companies some while helping new ones. I like this; it makes it easier for individuals to start new things up; very conservative.
What, specifically, do you think are problems with his policies?

- PennFarmer, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9I would just like to point out that everyone would actually be more likely to laugh at Britney and Paris rather than boycott them.
The author also seems to be deliberately twisting definitions when he compares "path to energy independence" with no oil for a decade and lower prices. Path == destination. Everyone knows that it will take ten years. The only question is when are we going to start the clock? If we start now, it will be in ten years. If we wait 2 or 3 more years while we complain that it will take 10 years, it will be 12 or 13 years from now. Had we started 10 years ago, we would be done by now. The time span isn't getting shorter. Focusing on that is a shell game for simply not wanting to do it, which is what the Dems actually think.
Also, energy independence == lower prices. It means that we will produce our own energy, a laudable goal.
I don't like McCain, but let's at least be intelligent in our attacks. - poprocksandsoda, on 08/20/2008, -3/+9Huffington/Left Blogs of America ... as a conservative undecided (but now decided) I want to thank you for helping give McCain a 5 point advantage:
http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUKN1 ...
That's a 20 point swing in just a couple of months. I think McCain could have taken a vacation during the past couple of months and leaped in the polls because you are doing all the work to turn voters towards him.
You can attribute the McCain lead to all the negative, biased and outright offensive "reporting" that people like yourself continue to perpetuate. Perhaps attacking the character of a war hero isn't the best approach to turning voters onto the message of the Left. I was very, very close to voting for Obama but now I associate voting with him with siding idealogically with entities like yourselves.
Some solid advice for 2012: instead of demeaning the political process with rhetoric, why not attempt to create a positive open discussion about the issues while being respectful to candidates you don't agree with?- PennFarmer, on 08/20/2008, -2/+3I would suggest you check out worldnetdaily.com and see what Farah has to say about voting for McCain. - PennFarmer, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2This is true yet irrelevant. Obama was a child at the time and had little to no control over where he was. Compare what he has done with his life after he turned 18 to McCain's of the same period if you wish to make an actual comparison. This sort of comparison is as bad as most of the stuff thinkprogress and Huffpost put out. It's nothing but fear mongering.
BTW - Madrassa means "school" in Arabic. It is a generic term for a place of learning below the college level (they have a different word for university). Only in the West is it always used as a term meaning "extremist indoctrination camp for young children to learn to blow themselves up and kill non-Muslims".
