Obama claimed:
Canada has a president
There are 58 states in the United States
His parents met and created him four years after he was born
His non-existent uncle helped liberate Auschwitz
With 24 hours claimed Iran was not a serious threat and a grave threat
10,000 people died in Kansas when only 12 died
Thinks is running to be "Commander-OF-Chief"- nocash23, on 06/10/2008, -18/+2prepare to be dug down my friend.... the brainwashed minions of "change" will see to that.
- chaosblade77, on 06/10/2008, -3/+14Not sure about the rest, but I know the Iran comment is taken out of context.
He said Iran is a grave threat, but said they are not a threat compared to the Soviet Union during the Cold War, or something along those lines. There was a comparison involved though, he wasn't just saying "Iran is not a threat." - peteophile44, on 06/10/2008, -2/+12source?

- nocash23, on 06/10/2008, -5/+1to chaosblade77
yeah i guess youre right. people are probably just blowing it out of proportion. the words "grave threat" arent as dire as they once where. it no longer means "seriously threatening health, well-being, or life; critical" or maybe it does and thats not a big deal to obama. whatever the reason at least he has people like you to play semantics for him. and the rest of you calling for "sources" and "citation required".... - familynight, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1perhaps, you're right in sum, but i was pretty shocked at witnessing open and accepted sexism and racism throughout western europe. sexism is ingrained in many western european cultures, and maybe it just comes out in different ways than i was used to from american culture, but it's weird that a woman locking eyes with a man in metropolitan cities, like paris or rome, can be viewed as some sort of invitation to harassment. i'm not saying the united states doesn't have sexual harassment, but it's not quite as expected in some situations.
also, while western europe may not have the united states' history of in-country racism, the number of minority citizens has been quite a bit lower until recent years. with increased immigration of arabs and muslims, many countries have seen a pronounced backlash, particularly among the working class. it seems more like western europe was happy being theoretically non-racist, but reality is beginning to intrude. i really don't think that racist slurs shouted by thousands of fans at a sports match would be taken with the same casual acceptance in the united states as it is in western europe.
my point is simply that it's very easy to call america names, but the differences between progressivism here and in europe is much greater in politics than overall socially, and the political differences are probably related to a corrupt interlinking of american military industry and government than anything else. it is not as simple as laughing at american conservative christianity to discuss broader issues of progressivism, an ideology that the united states helped shape. (i've never been to australia/nz/whatever other country you consider a part of the western world and canadians have been nothing but pleasant and friendly in my experience)

- ClosedCaption, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Those would be huge mistakes if being President required you to name your correct uncle, concentration camp, magazine article. 57 states...ok. But McCain has stated that HE'S strong on National Security and International Affairs and he talks like he doesnt know a dam thing everyday. If Obama said he was strong on Auschwitz that would be another story.
- BobOki, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Ohh man, those were good.
Honestly, I think McCain gets more scrutiny about these types of things, becuase he is thus far the king of flip flop, only second to what Giuliani was. There are only so many times you can state something, to 180 degree change it afterwords.
I'll say that most the links you provided sound more like dee dee dee moments, just accidentally saying the wrong thing like 57 states instead of 47.. oops.... just like the president of germany...
So, being that both obviously make mistakes.. that should make it easy to stop having ***** tarded stupid articles like this and, I don't know, actually start asking questions about real issues and the plans of these candidates?

Yes, America does have alot of dumb people... partially due to the current school system, partially do the wide variety / popularity of "dummy down" TV shows like the Simpsons, Family Guy, etc... Where the main characters are some of the stupidest people!
Just a couple examples of many influences that are being used to make people stupid.... But why are the powers that be pushing all these influences to "Dummy Down" the American public?
Never used to be this bad!- consoneo, on 06/10/2008, -4/+21Simpsons is not a "dummy down" TV show. That show ALWAYS had a moral in every episode. It always taught a lesson. Family Guy, on the other hand, is just blatant idiot comedy... some of which is quite funny :)

- JDFrancis, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah, everything used to be a lot better back in the good ol' days of lynching, widespread poverty, dust bowls, disease, and famine. I'm tired of people saying things used to be so much better. Things were not better. This isn't even a real issue. You can still be an effective president even if you don't know who the president was of a country struggling to become a world power again. He's clearly met Putin before, he's just so damn old that his brain doesn't want to waste the energy getting it correct.
What you can't be is a president incapable of fixing mistakes (this mostly means fessing up to making it), bad perceptions and dealing with the public.
Now the ZERO INTEREST thing....That's different...That just screams economic ignorance. Don't bother with this trash that has no bearing on anything. - blackinthmiddle, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2And that's what kills me about this kind of stuff. Once the media brands the candidates (i.e. experience vs change) many aren't willing to judge for themselves. As Bush has proved it is more than enough time to do a lot of BAD,
And with any luck it can begin the process of SOCIALIZED, yes, SOCIALIZED medicine among other things that need to eventually change.
I mean it looks like this election, for all of the things that won't change (even if Obama wants to) there is the difference between war with Iraq and Iran and no more war.- rowjimmy, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1a war with iran would be bad for corporate interest because it would be too unsustainable/dangerous to the global economy. bush might just be delusional enough to attempt such a thing, but nobody else would/will. socialized medicine will never happen so long as health-care is a for-profit industry. sure, they might reform things the slightest bit in order to stop workers from dying off in too great of numbers, but the essential structure will remain. capitalism, by its very nature, is empty homes and homeless people. (not that i'm a communist, but i certainly believe there are certain sectors of public and private life where profit-motive has no place)

I mean the insurance companies will do everything in their power to stop it, but it will happen little by little. Obviously the system couldn't handle it right away, but I have faith that Obama will make the first step and if we have a few democratic presidents in a row it will possibly happen (wishful thinking).
And I completely agree that profit has no place in certain areas ie:
HEALTH CARE AND INSURANCE they make money by not spending money on our care and by denying claims, it's a contradiction. And correcting problems is not profitable so we make drugs you have to take forever instead of finding ways to fix whats wrong, etc,etc
WAR hell no. There should never be any reason to go to war other than to protect our country. And not propaganda style "freedom".
- Cuchanu, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I bet you are right to some extent but 8 years is not a lot of time to do a lot of good- however:
- knoxchris, on 06/10/2008, -3/+30Wow, that's almost epic... something tells me McCain miss speaking will become a common occurrence leading up to November. That reminds me of someone... hmm.
- sassip, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5The, "Oh, that's just W being - W," bar is so low for repubs now, it's okay for a foreign policy "xpert" to not have this instilled in his brain... and I use the term "brain" loosely.

- leakus, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5Well, I am from Germany and I would prefer the next President of the USA would roughly know where to put Germany on the political map and not think the German President would give cold war like speeches.
- mal1964, on 06/10/2008, -4/+1Are you serious do you really think he doesn't know? You don't think he just made a mistake?
- leakus, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4I don't think I would ever confuse Putin and Bush. And if I did, I think I would realize it immediately, even though I don't think I would be fit for being President for any country. Germany has the 3rd highest nominal GDP and Russia is the largest country in the world. Somebody who will have a crucial role in world politics should be somewhat confident when talking about other countries.
- mal1964, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Ok I see now.
- leakus, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Do you really? Or is this sarcasm? If this isn't sarcasm I am willing to admit, that it is probably unnerving for a Presidential candidate having every word taped and every move watched 24/7. They are bound to make mistakes. It is just a pretty big mistake from a German perspective.
- dinot, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah! Who cares if our leaders don't know the names of leaders of other countries or which country they actually lead! That'll sure help inform their decisions when we decide to nuke the ***** outta them!

- banido, on 06/10/2008, -11/+10You're right, but you should know by now that on Digg there is no such thing as impartiality, Obamabots will prevail.
- agentb111, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4having 58 states would be cooler than getting an awkward "sorry, you have the wrong number" message when you phone a prominent country leader in need of assistance or late night drunken texting.

Just as with McCain in this video, it was just a slip of the tongue.
He's old and senile but he knows who Vladimir Putin is.
As for Obama:
"Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."
He meant to say 47.
47 + 1 left + Alaska + Hawaii = 50. - queotic, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Obama meant 57 states/territories/contests, as in Guam, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Democrats Abroad etc. Forgetting to add "territories" is not comparable to calling the Putin the German president.

- bombula, on 06/10/2008, -6/+13There are 57 electoral voting states, dumbass. Peurto Rico, Guam, District of Columbia (aka D.C.), etc are the extras.
- barktwiggs, on 06/10/2008, -3/+3Yes, but Obama said he visited 57 of those electoral voting states: Puerto Rico, Guam were never on his itenerary. Plus, he was impyling there were at least 2 more he still didn't visit. Anyway you spin it, he's mistaken.
- mztiklimit, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2He did visited Puerto Rico, but not as long as Hillary did. I think if he should have stayed a bit more, it would have change the results on the votes. Either way, it doesn't matter now.

- stinkymonkey, on 06/10/2008, -10/+33Guys, I hate McCain like the best of them. But lets not resort to 10 second soundbites like the Republicans do. McCain obviously knows who Putin is. Lets class this place up (well, as best we can) and stick to why we really think McCain is an idiot.
- Wartyboskfapped, on 06/10/2008, -4/+8"McCain obviously knows who Putin is"
With respect - where is the evidence he knows jack *****? He got mixed up with the two branches of Islam and confused them with Al Qaeda, he admits he doesn't know much about economics, now this. Where is there any evidence in this man's career that he 'obviously' knows anything? The things the guy says are ***** stupid.
I think this is further evidence of a man largely ignorant of the details of the foreign political scene. We've had 8 years of a fool like that in the WH, and this sort of sound bite is exactly the sort of flag we should be taking note of. - Globel, on 06/10/2008, -0/+0You don't think he is an idiot becuase he has no idea about Foreign Policy or who runs other Governments..

- katagana, on 06/10/2008, -8/+35This was just a mistake, common... Obama said he visited 57 states. It happends.. Besides there are a lot worse things that mccain has said and done... OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!
- deathsythe, on 06/10/2008, -10/+2I think we would all rather have a president who slips up occasionally with foreign things than someone who screws up something as serious as the number of states in our beloved union.
- bombula, on 06/10/2008, -6/+16"57" is not a mistake, you retards. Puerto Rico, Guam, D.C. etc get to vote and can be counted electorally as extra states. That's what the guy meant. He knows his *****, unlike you morons and John McBrain.
- barktwiggs, on 06/10/2008, -7/+5Let me get this straight. You're saying that when Obama meant 57 "voting states", he' s already visited them? Obama must be some sort of time traveler, because he didn't visit Puerto Rico until May 25th (he made the gaffe on May 9th), plus he has yet to visit Guam. Stop trying to spin this, it just makes you look desperate.
- Julik, on 06/10/2008, -5/+3Obama makes just as many if not more mistakes when he is speaking... But the media loves Obama and doesn't make a big deal out of it. I mean how many have heard / seen his speech where just last thursday when he said that young kids with asthma should be given breathalyzers... No no I mean "In-hal-la-tors"... Or did he mean Inhaler?
There were moments during the speech where he sounded just like Bush.. stumbling over his own words and everything.- exronin, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2On National media they don't talk negative about McCain at all, maybe out of respect for old people like themselves or something. Even a simple thing such as a fist bump by Obama has spawned a whole half an hour covering body gestures.... wtf?
- reaper527, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1if you think 57 is referring to those places that aren't states, than how do you justify bumping the number up to 60, since he has been to 57 states, with 1 more to go, but can't make it to alaska or hawaii?
@exronin
"Also getting a president of a country wrong is way more serious than getting a number of states hes visited wrong."
when the number of states "visited" is more than the number of states that exist, that is worse than confusing a president.
this is a dupe story anyways. people ragged on mccain for that when he was running for the nomination.- exronin, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1imo starting world war 3 > getting # of states wrong... just saying, although i tend to view the value of life more important than counting numbers, but you know thats just me. Putin has a big ego and is a war mongerer, and people with big ego and a trigger on russia's arsenal shouldn't be pissed off by a stupid comment. They need to be deal with like children, with care and authority but you can't say something factually incorrect coz then there egos just get hurt and they whine and do stupid *****. Just saying, you know I could be wrong, so yeah id prefer not to see ww3 if at all possible, kthx.
- exomni, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3He meant he traveled to different states 57 times. Somehow I see that slight misspeaking as less revealing than thinking Putin is the president of Germany.
