McCain's VP decision prompts one important question: Huh?

slate.com — John McCain has picked Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Huh? Palin may turn out to be a smart choice —buzz-generating and bolstering McCain's claim to change—but the first hurdle is getting over the fact that she's not very well-known. This opens up the possibility for distracting and potentially damning mischief as her biography is filled out.

She is an executive. 80%+ approval rating

  Her son in the Army? ALSO irrelevant. The GOP regularly hawks their kids for advantage (unless they are gay, then they legislate against their own children). If he comes back and runs for office it will become relevant. Besides, the kid isn't even in Iraq yet.

  She's under investigation for abusing her position and harassing her sister's ex husband.
  
  Wow, she's pro-life, so she believes in forcing women to have children they don't want or can't raise, but she's AGAINST healthcare for those women and children. Good luck, single moms! Palin won't be helping you!

  I have to admit I was impressed with the pick this morning. I though the GOP had finally figured out a way to avoid all the scandals most of the major GOP players have been involved in.

ImperialRome, on 08/30/2008, -1/+1I think McCain understands that the experience question isnt a good line of attack anymore. Obama can use Biden to neutralize that effectively, so why not abandon what wont work and pick something that will.
Besides, everyone who was going to vote against Obama for his lack of experience is already convinced; now is the time to "close the sale" for undecided voters and McCain + Palin can close the sale.
I remember how well the "mom in tennis shoes" schtick worked for Patty Murray back in the 90s. It can work for McCain now.
AdInventive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3It's not about how ridiculous of a choice this Palin character is for VP. It's about McCain and Obama and which of them have the ability to lead and insight change (in the general sense). This decision only lends credence to the ideal that McCain has poor judgment and is self serving (in the bad way). Palin has been picked as a mascot and not for what sort of judgment, input, insight, expertise, knowledge that she can lend to the President. Obama on the other hand picked someone that can compliment and empower his vision.

McCain picked Palin to try to win the presidency.
Obama picked Biden to try and make him a better president.

This does not even make mention of the argument that the VP pick is -supposed- to be the person you feel could make the most out of a presidency in the event of your demise.

This whole spectacle is an attempt to curb talk about McCain's own inabilities and judgment by giving pundits and otherwise naive people something to focus on. This is what I fear will earn McCain more than what he deserves.

Obama isn't the best candidate either, but he at least had the ability to make a realistic choice (whether it is the right choice is irrelevant) in making Biden his VP. This makes him a better thinker and in turn a better leader than the alternative.

Palin quit an ethics post she was appointed to and then blew the whistle on the Republican Chair in Alaska and another co-worker for being in cahoots with Big Oil. Both resigned.

Palin has imposed a larger profit tax on Big Oil.

Palin canceled the bridge to nowhere and has criticized Ted Stevens harshly. She has also canceled a whole bunch of other pork barrel projects.

When she took office, she rescinded appointments of a bunch of people the other governor appointed in his final hours. One of those people later pleaded guilty to conspiring with a defunct oil-field-services company.

She's a true conservative - that includes fiscal which many want and social, which many do not want.

She's a true Washington outsider - she has not worked in Washington.

Vote for Obama who promises change (but has voted "present" on most of the issues that matter to you, and voter "yes" to things like reauthorizing the patriot act) or vote for a woman who has already implemented the changes she wants, albeit on a smaller level?
