McCain's Convention Chair Worked for Burma's Military Junta
newsweek.com — The McCain campaign recently tapped Doug Goodyear to manage this summer's GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn. Goodyear is the CEO of DCI Group, a firm that was paid $348,000 in 2002 to represent Burma's military junta, which had been strongly condemned by the State Department for its human-rights record and remains in power today.

Don't ever underestimate the stupidity of the Democrats - Corrosionx, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1That's what they said about Iraq.
- john2782, on 05/11/2008, -11/+12No, seriously, this is a good (in a messed up way) story. The HEAD OF THE GOP CONVENTION (chosen by Mr. McCain) worked PR for the miserable "Government" (see: military dictatorship).
#1 - The Dictatorship hired a PR company?!?!? (Imagine if Hitler was alive today...)
#2 - Who the frick doesn't have the scruples to say, "No, Evil Dictatorship, I won't make happy ads to make you seem less evil" ????
#3 - This is the kind of dude John McCain chooses for an arguably important role?- Pake, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6I don't support McCain (I like Obama), but for #3, it wasn't McCain who chose him, it was his manager Rick Davis. Also, the guy has already stepped down.
- claralyn, on 05/11/2008, -11/+10McCain has been one of the strongest Congressional supporters for human rights in Burma, so this is disappointing.
- yellowcakewalk, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2He was one of the greatest champions of honesty after the Keating Five scandal until it was convenient to be corrupt again, he was one of the greatest champions for campaign finance reform while it was convenient, he voted against Bush until he voted for him, he was against torture until he was for it. McCain should stick to his mashed nanners and yelling at kids to get off his yard.

- andy314159pi, on 05/11/2008, -4/+8Yeah I'm hoping for more stories about all of the good that the conservatives have done over the last 8 years.

- chall2001, on 05/11/2008, -10/+14Geez, talk about 5 degrees of separation. When people do this to Obama the mob goes crazy.
So how is ol' Will Ayers doing these days?- RebeL5K, on 05/11/2008, -5/+6When I start to feel down, I just remind myself things could get a lot worse; I could be a lowlife, oaky ***** like you. Let us compare the two: McCain hires a guy whose firm represented a foreign dictatorship to lead his GOP Convention. Then, on the other hand, Barack Obama once went to the house of a guy who did some things 40 years ago for a fundraiser and even (GASPS) served on the SAME BOARD at a non-profit organization!! Oh my, I can completely see how the two are the same. Dumb *****.
- chall2001, on 05/11/2008, -4/+4Ah yes, yet another fine example of the internet tough guy.
If I was wrong you wouldn't need to be so bitchy. Any fine words of wisdom about his mentor Rev Wright?- RebeL5K, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Yes. Rev. Wright is a person. Barack Obama is another person. One is running for President, one is not. Neither speaks for the other. Guilty by association doesn't fly anymore; the voters proved that this week when Hillary got creamed.
- chall2001, on 05/11/2008, -4/+4Ah yes, yet another fine example of the internet tough guy.
- Corrosionx, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Do it to everyone, I want more dirt on everyone, I will not choose any favorites, to me these people are all parasites anyways.

- Monolith4, on 05/11/2008, -11/+18Uhh... it's a friggin CORPORATION. McCain didn't endorse the military junta anymore than DCI endorsed McCain. You hire the best person for the job, that's the way capitalism works, retards!
Are you hypocritical ***** going to start moaning about volkswagon because Hitler had them produce material for the war?
Seriously, you people are quite possibly more reactionary than a focus group of soccer moms watching a 60 minutes marathon.- chicofaraby, on 05/11/2008, -8/+11"You hire the best person for the job, that's the way capitalism works,"
and whether you want to stage a convention or gloss over a bit of brutal state sponsored murder, DCI is your "go to" corporation.- Monolith4, on 05/11/2008, -7/+8So we should start telling companies they can't be *too good* at their job?
"Hold on now, i'm not sure if we should hire these guys... they increased profits by 350% over at Acme! I'm not sure if we want someone that effective on our side."
Yeah, no. Try reading something about how this country operates, dumbledore. Protip: It's not by holding hands and singing kumbaya.- humanerror, on 05/11/2008, -3/+5Sometimes it's hard to understand how human affairs can get so incredibly ***** up.
That's because it's all too easy to forget that people like you are out there existing by the truckload. - RebeL5K, on 05/11/2008, -3/+6So if this company was just making a KILLING by providing services to Osama Bin Laden that would be cool with you, so long as they're breaking a profit?
- humanerror, on 05/11/2008, -3/+5Sometimes it's hard to understand how human affairs can get so incredibly ***** up.
- Monolith4, on 05/11/2008, -7/+8So we should start telling companies they can't be *too good* at their job?
- andy314159pi, on 05/11/2008, -2/+9Capitalism is not about hiring the best person, it's about leveraging your capital to maximize profit.
- DaDrake, on 05/11/2008, -3/+7Chicofarby don't be ridiculous. The reality of campaigns is they must work incredibly fast, under much stress, and follow the advice of local leaders and individuals with a track-record. You don't get to have some congressional review for every campaign staffer you hire. Obama himself has fired over a half-of-dozen staffers for stupid comments or unknown history. These things simply come out in time.... and 1 week is not a lot of time.
- RetlawST, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1You are absolutely right, and it's up to the voters (aka consumers) to decide if forgiving a persons questionable involvement with a military dictatorship the correct thing to do. This guy ran a company that whitewashed mass murder, and as a voter I would find it highly questionable for a candidate to 'require' his expertise.
Newsweek did the right thing for pointing it out, and McCain did the right thing in firing him.
- chicofaraby, on 05/11/2008, -8/+11"You hire the best person for the job, that's the way capitalism works,"
- DaDrake, on 05/11/2008, -3/+14McCain did correct the problem as soon as it came to their attention. Campaigns often hire private firms to help advertise their positions. What they do is simple... they send staffers to each locality looking for firms and individuals who previously have supported campaigns (you would be amazed at the number of times individuals, who campaign for the opposing party before, get hired). Oftentimes, staffers are let go because of unknown conflicts-of-interest or they said something stupid (although, with good intentions) that hurt the campaign. Even Obama has let many staffers go because of these issues. It has nothing to do with the actual nominee and doesn't reveal anything about his/her character.
- RebeL5K, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3But it's fun to pretend as if it did. ;-)
- taradisiac, on 05/11/2008, -5/+9Guilt by association is OK when we do it rite? Hypocrites.
- DaDrake, on 05/11/2008, -2/+5I think some diggers expect a congressional review for every staffer a campaign hires.
- patpl22391, on 05/11/2008, -4/+11Digg is involved in and strongly advocates the kind of political attacks that Barack Obama so strongly condemns. I ask that digg stop smearing the opposing candidates with non-news and non-stories and discuss the real issues.
- RetlawST, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2I agree to an extent. McCain quickly handled the situation, but it was completely justified to bring this topic up. This is a man who runs a company that accepted money to spread misinformation from a military dictatorship concerning the murders of thousands of people. It is definitely within the scope of a presidential election if a candidate believes that these type of business partnerships are acceptable. I am giving McCain the benefit of the doubt that he had no knowledge of this man's previous work and was using his services on a recommendation.
- dildoolielly, on 05/11/2008, -6/+5Why is it when innocent people die, Republicans always seem to profit from it?
- dafunkmonster, on 05/11/2008, -2/+1Because the Clintons set it up that way...
- shiftclick, on 05/11/2008, -5/+3Ah, the spam cometh. Yee sheeple shall pay!
- kds405, on 05/11/2008, -3/+1Doesn't he know that Ellen Page says that "Hilter is still alive in Burma". I mean, its like that whole ad campaign never happened!
- Sogui, on 05/11/2008, -2/+12McCain on Burma:
http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-mcca ...
He's one of the staunchest anti-Burma senators we have, and that was before the recent atrocities. McCain didn't know about this man's past, and when it was revealed he quickly stepped down.- RetlawST, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2You mean staunchest anti-Myanmar senators we have.
- veersite, on 05/11/2008, -2/+3Excellent use of the FACTS to shine the light on liberal media LIES. It astounds me how bald-faced they are becoming.
- yellowcakewalk, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Which liberal media would that be? The government propaganda mouthpieces called the New York Times and The Washington Post?
- AlexWills, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Now that Clinton's out, here come the McCain attack ads.
- arizonabay, on 05/11/2008, -4/+3I don't see the problem. All this shows is that McCain hires people experienced with the establishment of authoritarian regimes. With his support of the Patriot Act, government wiretapping, suspension of Habeas Corpus and torture, shouldn't his supporters be enthused that he's vested in competently instituting his vision for America?
- HotSaucePanCake, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3McCain acted swiftly.
What did obama do with his reverend? It took him a month for advisers to tell him what to do.
Face it McCain has answers, On Demand... Just the way America Likes it - gumble112, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3A PR campaign for dictatorships? Pffffft. An Obama Presidency will have that covered in no time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSFSUbMWenU- veersite, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Awesome rebuttal. Short, sweet, powerful, and it cannot be refuted. I wonder, though, how long it will stay up on Youtube? Obama seems to be so adept at erasing his record. Keep it coming, gumble112!
- happyseamonster, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1figures
- dafunkmonster, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3When Obama hires multiple N.O.I. members, its hush hush, but when one man in McCain's campaign gets appointed and quickly steps down due to a past record, its "OMG MCCAIN IS EVIL, OBAMA 08!".
Such blatant agenda-pushing irritates me. - veersite, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Nice to see the full-court press is starting by the MSM. Yawn. If this is the best they can do, I guess we'll still be watching Hillary and Feuxbama slugging it out daily on the evening news this time next month. It's pretty pathetic that the Dem's only strategy to win in November is to let the media desperately fling poo at McCain and hope something... anything... sticks.
I think it's a damned shame how two candidates (one of whom we know has no character and will say anything to win - and the other who has done a magnificent job hiding what little record he actually does have) get the immediate endorsement of 90% of the media simply because they are Democrats. McCain, who has proven character beyond a doubt, has served his country rather than denigrate it at every turn, and has acted more like a statesman (in real deeds as opposed to words), gets labelled the "bad-guy"... at least if you happen to believe the likes of the NY Times, Newsweek, Huffingtonpost, thinkprogress, and the rest of that ilk. I doubt Middle America (you know, the rubes in flyover country you guys and Oama like to make fun of) will fall for these two-bit hit jobs. I know i haven't. Good luck trying to be the "candidate of change" while letting once-removed proxies like the aforementioned media (I use the term loosely) outlets do your dirty work for you. Like Obama's record, this is so thin you can see through it in a heartbeat.
The politics of character assassination: Clinton-perfected... Obama-approved!
Have a great day. - waynemr, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1I thought US companies were prohibited from working in or with the military leaders in Burma, unless they were grandfathered in from prior business dealings (prior to 1988, I think). Is DCI an international group, or did they break the law in 2002?
- Lamadave222, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1And Barry Obama's supporter little Billy Ayers, domestic terrorist and bomb thrower, was at the same time stomping on an American flag outside the Pentagon. I wonder what "Reverend" Wright's sermons were about at the time? Given his leftist views, I would like to know what Barry's stance on foreign affairs was in 2002. Oh wait, he was fixing parking tickets for his constituency in Chicago and partying with terrorists,,,,,never mind. Just the kind of depth of experience we need to lead this country in times of difficulty.
- skteoievtehr, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0You're hilarious. Did you remember to whip your immigrants tonight?
- afruff23, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1McCain has lots of connections to Myanmar: the Rambo endorsement and now his convention chair?
- Redwine707, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Maverick my ass, McCain has more special interest brands on his butt than a NASCAR racer.
