McCain on tape: "No, I don't want clean national elections."
youtube.com — Late 2007- reporter asks McCain about Public Finacing Q: "You got clean elections in Arizona, do you want to see that on a national level?" McCain: "Ahhhh, you mean the –" Q: "Public financing? "McCain: "No, I don’t think that’s what we want to do. I think we ought to let the BCRA see how it plays out first, but I’m very worried about the 527s."

- voxlisa999, on 06/26/2008, -4/+28I think somebody is getting into hot water. The MSM is beginning to cover his little swindle in the Primaries opting in an out of public financng to cover a loan. Pretty deceitful move and he's also dishonest for attacking Obama - of course his campaign thought the voters are too stupid or uninterested to understand his gaming the system. He also voted against Public Financing!
The whole sordid story and more on the tape. Same old tactics. No Maverick here folks.

- Kangalanatolian, on 06/26/2008, -2/+5Clean elections? That means not cheating. The National Clean Elections Lawsuit seeks to eliminate the programmable voting machines. There are 3 people in every state of the union (150 total) suing each state to force them to use paper ballots, stored and counted in public exclusively. This is FAR more important to our democratic republic than free money for the other candidates.
Please Google and support N.C.E.L.- beesaretasty, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0I don't think paper is the answer. There's no reason not to use electronic voting in principal. Just put out open source code for machines and don't put usb slots on them. There's no reason to have the ability to write anything to these machines from anything other than the actual voting interface unless you are updating the code (and it's ok if that's kind of a pain in the ass that involves hammers, screwdrivers and loud alarms)
- Kangalanatolian, on 06/26/2008, -0/+6Even if you use a mail in paper ballot, your elections official uses a PROGRAMMABLE COUNTING MACHINE to tabulate the vote. This is not a fancy calculator. It is actually programmable. They even used these at the Iowa straw poll, where there was only 1 vote to count per ballot. They prevented the vote from being verified manually, and had the police temporary detain those who would like to observe the physical count.
- gypsi, on 06/27/2008, -3/+10only a filthy fixed election for a third time in a row will get the republicans into the office this november
- PolishLogic, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1Here's a tip, next time make sure you understand what this is about before commenting based on the title alone.
- 2612, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1And stop making excuses for the Dems losing already.
- Evangelical, on 06/27/2008, -15/+1Unless my fellow Christian Nation wants another Terrorist attack, I pray they will do as I will do and vote for McCain. He is more than qualified for the job. Obama on the other hand has NO experience whatsoever. We can't trust Obama with two Wars, and we certainly cannot depend on him to rescue our fellow Christian brothers in Israel from the Terrorist who surround them. God help us and our religion if Obama wins.
- Shiftgood, on 06/27/2008, -0/+10You're more entertaining than TV.
- Xenologer, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6I always thought that it was JEWS in Israel.
- shutaro, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
- ClosedCaption, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Wait, are you saying you're going to attack if Obama is elected?
- goofrey137, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0obvious troll is obvious
- Pittance, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Hear that whistling? That's the sound of your digg count plummeting.
- jbdobd, on 06/27/2008, -3/+8McCain was for clean elections before he was against them.
- Veronica98, on 06/27/2008, -6/+2OK, I agree McCain finally has lost it - which is why we need to support Bob Barr! McCain is a mess (sorry I wanted to support him and I did but he's all over the place and doesn't stand for anything anymore) and if you want to take a principled stand to get the real Republican party back - away from Bush the Hijacker then vote your conscience. VOTE for BARR or at least give him a look! C'mon, he's better than Obama and will force the Republicans to take their party back to where it belongs.
- Pittance, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Don't digg this guy down. He's actually an intelligent conservative, not like the other supposedly conservative republicans. He wants to vote for Barr, which is part of the Libertarian party, and within spitting distance of Ron Paul. Regardless of how you feel about republicans, at least he isn't the knee-jerk anti-democratic, close-minded type of republicans you usually end up seeing./
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 06/27/2008, -3/+4There is a growing list of McCain Flip-Flops at http://FlipFlopExpress.info or http://flipfloptracker.blogspot.com
Spread the word! - AtHomeBoy2000, on 06/27/2008, -4/+2Here's the full info on how this is a flip-flop...
http://flipfloptracker.blogspot.com/2008/06/breaki ... - PuterPrsn, on 06/27/2008, -4/+1Buried for inaccurate headline. Clean election means no voter fraud - more like Chicago (anyone you know from there??) and Lousiana (a Democrat state) allowing dead people to vote.
McCain isn't the one who decided, AFTER saying he would take public money, to not take it because it was so "limiting". Does noone remember that? It was only a month ago.- asskicker32, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Dont you remember when Senator Obama said that he would "aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election" and not that he would absolutely use only public funds...
- asskicker32, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Dont you remember when Senator Obama said that he would "aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election" and not that he would absolutely use only public funds...
- cslawren, on 06/27/2008, -4/+2Bury me for saying this, but I say today as diggers, we boycott stories on digg pertaining to the election. That's right, BOYCOTT. I'm sick of digg becoming the political tool it has rather than the place i used to get my nerdy tech news, like the nvidia physx story earlier.
- notanidiot, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2OK, I'm burying you. Because Digg is one of the few places where someone willing to look beyond the front page can get several viewpoints of people truly concerned about the election, and where your comment always gets posted without being screened first.
- basefx, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2there's an option in your profile to limit what shows up on digg, which certainly requires less effort than you seeing a political article, clicking the article, and taking the time out to type how much you hate political stories
- Pittance, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Click on the Technology tab and stay there then. That is where the tech news gets posted. How long has it been since digg has been tech-only? Years? Get with it man.
- jollyholly, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1Obama is getting lots of crap for not going with public financing.. but if his opponent decided to not go with it in December.. what else is he going to do??
- m0neybags, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1No, that's not what he's saying. He is not saying "no" to public financing. He is saying no to the style of public financing in his home state which is referred to as "Clean election" laws.
- OffPiste, on 06/27/2008, -2/+1Will Obama ever get off the USS Swiftboat? Man he's booked a world tour on that boat.
- m0neybags, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Clean elections is vague language, but this has nothing to do with voter fraud. As the interviewer followed it with "public financing?" after also referencing Arizona, it is implied that they are talking about clean elections laws in Arizona that determine how candidates receive financing for their campaigns from the government.
The system in Arizona is such that a candidate would need to receive a certain amount of private funds in order to qualify for a lump-sum contribution from the government. If the candidate's competitor funds their campaign privately, then the clean elections laws provide additional matching funds.
These laws have only existed in a few states for a few election cycles. If anything McCain would benefit from these election laws in this election.
Basically this headline is *****, the quote is fake. Pretty much on par with 527 group behavior. - goofrey137, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1if people are so hung up on this public financing ***** then the candidates should both just be forced to use it. what the ***** is the point of giving them an option, of course theyll choose more money over less money, if one elects not to use it it pretty much forces the other to opt out as well.
this is stupid, either we make it mandatory or shut the ***** up when politicians choose what is essentially the only viable option for winning.- PolishLogic, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I completely agree. Want to end all this debate and speculation? Make public financing mandatory.
Then you can take special interest campaign money off the table and level the playing field.
- PolishLogic, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I completely agree. Want to end all this debate and speculation? Make public financing mandatory.
- notanidiot, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Its really funny when people say "Oh, that candidate just wants to win! They don't care about anything else." Well, duh! All candidates want to win, especially when its down to just two left.
- PolishLogic, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2MTV/MySpace Presidential Dialogue???
Those two have about as much business being in the political scene as Microsoft does making baby food. - fatal616, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1Clean elections do not work. There's ALWAYS loopholes.
SEE: the dirty money behind clean elections
http://newmatilda.com/2008/08/26/dirty-money-behin ...
"we need to ban all corporate and group donations, place a low limit on donations from individuals and put caps election expenditure. Candidates should also continuously disclose donations from individuals and the money they spend on their own election campaigns. These are important steps to take if we want to promote a healthy and vibrant democracy in this country. "
