- Ridgeliner7, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Good luck with that, since the media and the major two parties reinforce each other, crowding out the other parties and acting like they don't exist. Just when I think we don't need more rules, I find that because the media and the major parties cannot play nice, we need some!
- Mrdudeperson, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4We really need to come up with a new political system (republicans, democrats, etc.). The political parties cause people to generalize the candidate, and a lot of people will only vote for the candidate just because he/she is part of a certain party. Or many people who don't like George Bush wont vote for the republican candidate because he/she is part of the same party as Bush (you might have other reasons). The party system also pushes the politicians into a peer pressure environment, where if some members vote on a certain way you as a politician are somewhat forced to think that way. George Washington was in fact opposed to political parties 0ver 200 years ago. I'm not saying political parties haven't helped in the past, I just think we would do better without them, or reformed them so they have less influence over what matters, running our country.
