McCain Now Silent On Guns, After Relishing Fights
huffingtonpost.com — In 2000, Sen. John McCain appeared in a series of television commercials promoting ballot initiatives in Colorado and Oregon that would require people to undergo criminal background checks if they hoped to buy firearms at gun shows. Recently, however, McCain has walked his advocacy back, declining to cosponsor the very legislation he once promoted

- Happy_Phantom, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2I'm a firearm owner. I have been since I was a child. My family has been for many generations, beginning as hunters. Even I, however, would support that legislation. If you disrespect society by committing a felony, you have no business owning a gun.
- IconoclastStill, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4Under Federal law, with the minor exception of personal, face-to-face, sales between private individuals residing in the same state and acting in that state in conformance with all Federal, state and municipal laws, all firearms transactions must be through a Federally-licensed dealer, with all the same paperwork and background checks required as a transaction on the premises covered by the license. McAmnesty's "gun show loophole" was the same loop hole that applies when firearms are transferred between family members, friends, hunting companions, etc. privately away from gun show venues. This only sounds scary when people do not understand the key elements of the 20,000 plus laws already restricting firearms ownership in this nation.
This McAmnesty campaign was simply a strawman photo op / sound bite to win left-leaning votes, but it demonstrates he, like both shrubs, is no friend of firearms owners. He is not, however, so actively hostile as shirillary and obie empty suit. - InRussetShadows, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1There never was a gun show loophole, unless you want to regulate individuals buying and trading guns, which I assume the left wants to do, because having their fingers around everything you do is their goal.
Now on that most glorious day, when no man can legally own a gun, when the police will be on every street corner and living in our houses, and when the criminals commit crime against a helpless citizenry, the left's cries for more and more government will be ever-loud.
Gun owners are the canaries in the coal mine, folks. If you can't figure that out, wait until they come for some right you care about -- if anyone remains who dares raise their voice. - Argentian, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Even though he isn't as bad as the Dynamic Duo, his willingness to play with the 2nd Amendment makes me less than sanguine about his positions. Taken in toto, they would be ranked as moderate-liberal to liberal, at least in almost any other election year.
