- levelred, on 07/11/2008, -4/+8stupid argument. everyone, i mean everyone should have to present id to vote. that is just silly not to want that. in texas you can get a texas id, not driver license, and that is your proof.
- neognostic, on 07/11/2008, -6/+3Stupid comment. If you are elderly, poor, and don't drive, then it is very difficult to go clear across town to get a Texas ID, and are they suppose to give up food to pay for it?
Seeing how you are so generous, why don't you drive them, and pay for it?- levelred, on 07/11/2008, -1/+6stupid comment, my ass. if they were so concerned about things that affect them, they will find a way. if they were so poor, i am sure they are some type of assistance, and in turn they do need id.
And btw *****, I have driven the elderly to vote.

- Tex, on 07/28/2008, -2/+3There's a fee to get a drivers' license or state ID card produced. That constitutes a poll tax, which is illegal.

- TWGMichael, on 07/11/2008, -5/+5The majority of voter fraud happens behind the scenes, where the people in charge are the fraudsters. When so many dead people show up as voting you can bet it isn't because the same person voted over and over, or a bunch of out-of-towners were bussed in. Those ballots are filled out and just placed neatly in with all the other votes by one or more conspiring douchebags. "Cracking down" on voter fraud by putting more and more onerous burdens on the voter is just another way to discourage civil engagement. "Explain how the world is really banana shaped and sheep's bladders can be used to prevent earthquakes."
- synarchy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4A photo ID is hardly on onerous burden.
- scotq, on 07/11/2008, -7/+4The more requirements we create to vote, the less people will be able to vote. By requiring a photo id, a lot of people will not be able to vote. Believe it or not, not everyone has a drivers license or military id. This is the new wave of jim crow in my mind!
- levelred, on 07/11/2008, -2/+5so how should be able to vote. the honor method?
by referring this to Jim Crow you claim this has some racial connotation, but does it. Or just some type of viral marketing? by saying this has something to do with Jim Crow only says to me, and other that minorities are the ones without id's.
- levelred, on 07/11/2008, -2/+5so how should be able to vote. the honor method?
- Kangalanatolian, on 07/11/2008, -0/+3While I tend to agree with TWGMichael that serious voter fraud is probably an inside job, I do not see why photo ID cannot be a requirement, even if they have to take your picture on the spot.
But the inside job issues should be addressed as well. It is so STUPID and counter productive to get involved with an either/or argument.
Youtube or Brasscheck both have videos of the recount of the paper ballots in New Hampshire. Seals that were NOT seals, it was obviously not tamper proof. It would not be hard to make the election secure, really.
Print all the needed ballots, lock them in plain sight, accessible 24 hours a day. The vote could go on for a week or more at this location. It should be counted there as well (publicly by hand - not programmable machines), and checked against voter lists. Used and unused ballots should never leave the public sight while the process is underway.
If you use mail in ballots they can be channeled to this location and dealt with similarly. - bepeace, on 07/12/2008, -3/+2It is a much more complex issue than the comments here suggest. Voter ID requirements are pushed by Republican pols for a reason. These laws disenfranchise poor, minority, and disabled voters - people more likely to vote Democratic. They also tend to be "solutions in search of problems", voter fraud is a non issue, election fraud... that's a problem... but voter fraud, try to find a case, (aside from the ebay kid and he failed).
Anyway, much has been written, google it, check the ACLU on the topic.
Turn off the news and read M.....F....., read. (Immortal Technique)- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2I live in Chicago where the Democratic Machine(Daley's clan) get at least ten thousand dead people to vote every time the election comes around. The Republicans have a right to see that everyone voting has an ID and then to watch the ballots.
- synarchy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6With some 30 million illegals in the country, the possibility for non-citizen voting is significant. Picture IDs are hardly a burden.
- ImperialRome, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Voter fraud happens primarily two ways- phony voter registrations, and mail in ballots. The only way to prevent these efforts at "gaming the system" by ACORN and their ilk is by requiring ID at the polls and strict ballot signature requirements for mail in ballots.
Its funny that the very same requirement that passes Judicial scrutiny in Ohio and Indiana is rejected by a judge in Georgia.
That means it will likely be overturned on appeal. It's not over.
As far as this being a case of "disenfranchisement" that is patently ridiculous. Your right to vote is not an absolute, it is conditional on citizenship and that is conditional on your remaining free from criminal felony. We don't allow the insane, the felon, or the illegal immigrant to vote. It isn't a "natural right" like the freedom of speech or freedom of conscience. It is a right, but like all rights they come with commensurate responsibilities. You must do your part to register to vote, and pass the basic screening that demonstrates your legitimate participation in the process. That screening is meaningless if you can appear in a polling place and cast a ballot in someone else's name without challenge.
We challenge your right to vote when you register, why not challenge that when you cast the actual ballot? - PolishLogic, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4Maybe I'll be voting in two states now.
