I reached Mike Whelan, a waiter and army veteran, at his duplex.
Whelan said he'd invited independent observers from the group LegalWatch stay in one half of his side-by-side duplex while they monitored RNC protests.
Whelan described himself as a supporter of the RNC demonstrations, but said he is not affiliated with any particular group. "I want to build a country that's based on good social values," he explained. "About an hour and a half ago 20 to 30 heavily armed police officers surrounded the house," Whelan said. "One of my roommates said 'I want to see a warrant' and she was immediately detained."
"Are you scared," I asked.""No, I'm a veteran," he said, "I was in the army. I was a military police officer. I wouldn't have done this."
Whelan said it was especially perplexing that the police would target his home.
"There's nothing here," he said, "These are the "checking" people. They're not even going to be in the demonstration. Some are lawyers."- mikelieman, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Aren't the people providing oversight the most dangerous ones?
They could document the Agent Provaceturs actions...
I'd like to see this go to court on the civil side, and have all the INTEL related to the incident subpoenaed so that we could learn WHY these people were targeted.
Lies, Spies and Torture...- MarkOfTheDead, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2That would be amazing.
I'm interested in how many "anonymous tips" get brought up if it ever materializes.

- keigwyn, on 08/30/2008, -0/+7The erosion of our constitutional rights continue. What can you expect of the party that brought us warrentless wiretapping and surveillance? We have to fight back and regain our rights! Get angry!

Other Than "Them"
July 17, 2007
Just returned from working security for that evil, green, hippie fair. The Oregon Country Fair.
We had local sheriffs (sheriffim? Would that not be more correct? Ask Shellie Berman!) harassing people all weekend. Handing out citations for walking on the road, skateboarding on the road, walking in public, not walking properly, being in their vicinity, showing up on their night-vision binoculars, being "evil terrorist hippies", the list is pretty much endless...
Why can't they do the job that they are paid to do and arrest actual criminals instead of harassing people that are doing no harm to anyone?
There was an insane thickness of presence by those with a quota for tickets. They had a monster "command post" set up at the end of Suttle Road (Veneta, Oregon), as if the paying customers were terrorists, instead of a bunch of hippies that were just trying to have a good time for a weekend...
It was truly disgusting behavior on the part of supposed law/peace keepers.

theRaven - Delphium226, on 08/31/2008, -0/+4/me sits and waits for brown-shirted prison camp guard troll wannabes to show up cheering the dawn of a new fascist age.
- ShallowWaters, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1Stephen Rohde has a variation on Martin Niemoller's famous passage about the Nazis which, while not as potent as Niemoller's, is quite sobering due to the accuracy of the analogy. See http://www.janrainwater.com/htdocs/Rohde.htm
- tomjeff08, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Once they start bringing home their "brothers" in body bags, they may realize that we aren't all going to keep putting up with this *****. As long as they figure they are untouchable, it will continue. The best way to stop the schoolyard bully is to knock out a tooth or two.
As long as I get two before they get me....it's all good. I would regret that I have only one life to lose for my country but would know that two terrorists were taken out in the process.
