Ignorant WV Hillbillies Still Think Obama is a Muslim

- DavidBGie, on 05/12/2008, -27/+13Muslim! Ha ! What dumb asses! He's a hard core evangelical! God's way or no way! Strange how these Anti-Christ diggers are suddenly smitten with a church going presidential candidate.
- Martlet, on 05/12/2008, -17/+5What's funnier is how you're immediately dug down for pointing that out.
- bluezinc, on 05/13/2008, -3/+15No, he's being dugg down because he's insane and so are you.
Please, show me some evidence for your claim besides the fact that he goes to church. Might I point out that he is pro-choice, pro-gay rights, and has said that religion cannot enter politics under any circumstances.
- Enasni1212, on 05/12/2008, -3/+26Is it really that funny, David? We don't give a ***** what religious beliefs he has, as long as he doesn't try to push them on others, and doesn't let it cloud his reason. He could be Muslim, Hindu, Taoist, whatever, and most diggers wouldn't care as long as he continues to act the way he does.
- hittnrun, on 05/13/2008, -18/+3The Reverend story was pushed on us...for good reason.
BTW, While it is typical of you elitist Obamabots to ridicule other Americans who have a vote (you don't like), one thing is not. That would be the ignorant belief of you arrogant music stealers, dopeheads and other degenerate misfits that the "Magical Negro" is white enough to win this general election. The hillbillies will have the last laugh and it will be on you.
Hillbillies, we want you under our Big Tent. McCain 08. - bluezinc, on 05/13/2008, -2/+6Way to fail. You basically just went, "YEAH! IDEOLOGY OVER REASON!! WAR IS PEACE!!"

- paulisnotdead, on 05/12/2008, -1/+13*sigh* Thomas Paine where are you?
- Gerz1219, on 05/12/2008, -4/+14You're right, there's a difference between stupidity and ignorance. Intelligence is fairly evenly distributed amongst the general population, but some geographic areas show a higher tendency towards ignorance than others. A person who still really thinks Obama is a Muslim at this point is willfully ignorant, because they've gone out of their way to believe something that is refuted by documented facts. It's frustrating, in the face of free and open access to information, to have to constantly argue over facts which should be commonly accepted, which is where charges of elitist condescension come in.
I saw a recent poll that said 31% of West Virginians believe Hillary still has the best chance to win the presidency in November (versus 27% for Obama and 26% for McCain). When most people in a population believe something that is mathematically impossible, they are displaying their ignorance.

- speakerfordead, on 05/12/2008, -1/+19Yeah, they do, and many are avid Diggers like myself who are voting Obama. Coincidentally, I am from Mingo County and know of several Obama supporters in the area. This reporter just decided to go dredging for idiots. Sadly, they are in abundance everywhere.

- bigj480, on 05/12/2008, -4/+5Honest question, how can a self-proclaimed conservative vote for an ultra "liberal" candidate? I also dislike McCain and will not vote for him but voting for Obama goes against most conservative ideals. Why not vote 3rd party? That said, he can't be any worse than the current president.
- westerner22, on 05/13/2008, -1/+16Obama is open minded. Does this make him "ultra liberal"? You are just throwing fear- labels. Wrong place. What a waste.
- bigj480, on 05/13/2008, -8/+3 There is a reason I put liberal in quotations, it's what most people use to describe the positions of people like Obama. I actually hate labels and I am not a party loyalist, I HATE the new republican party. They are almost the polar opposite of who I would like in office.
Is Obama open minded? IDK and it does not matter, I disagree with his stance on the issues. I have listened to his speeches about "change", I don't want his brand of "change".
What makes him ultra "liberal" in my view is his pushing of socialized medicine, which we can NOT afford and which will NOT have the desired effect. Yes, he is liberal to the point of almost being a socialist. That may be fine with you, you may share those views, you may be socialist. That's fine, to each their own, but I will not vote for a socialist.
It is not the governments job to FORCE me to give to charity through taxes, no matter how good the cause, I do that on my own. What he is proposing is theft of my tax dollars, plain and simple. Another reason I would never vote for him is his position on gun "control".
Is Obama open minded? Not enough, he will never give up on socialized medicine or gun "control". - EpaL, on 05/13/2008, -1/+15Mate this is why your health system sucks so bad. The fear mongering of previous administrations and Big Pharma that has turned a nation against free public health is one of the most tragic I can think of (discounting the Iraq War of course). Look around at the rest of the world and you'll see the effects of "socialised" medicine and it makes your country look positively third world.
If you are so against socialism, why pay taxes at all? Why not be 100% capitalist and eshew any form of income redistribution? Oh thats right, the country would disintegrate. My question to you is: If medicine isn't a worthy cause for income redistribution throug taxation then WHAT THE HELL IS? Come on man, get over the stigmatism and labels fed to you by Big Pharma and open your eyes. All 1st, 2nd and some of third-world country have universal health care (or 'socialised medicine') for its citizens and are much better places for it. It really is long past time that the US got with the program. The current system is seriously rigged and seriously broke. The only way to fix it is to remove the profit motive. - mateo60, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4@Epal
Well said. That's one thing that doesn't seem to get mentioned often enough here regarding the healthcare debate. More money passes through our current healthcare system than in any country in the world, however, our healthcare system is not even close to being the envy of the world. Ask almost anyone from New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, or Australia whether or not they would want to trade their respective healthcare systems with ours here in the US, and you'll get the same answer. "No."
People, please don't let the fear-mongering replace reason. Investigate for yourselves how it works in the rest of the world, and THEN decide for yourself whether or not you think nationalized healthcare is a good idea. - FLarsen, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2@mateo60: You want to know how it works in the rest of the world? Well, here in Norway it seems to work well, until you look a little closer. There are BIG funding problems.
Some of the best healthcare I've received were from private institutions.
Socialized medicine is stealing from the rich to give to the poor, which is WRONG. The rich should give out of their own free will. The money that's passes through your healthcare system shouldn't be redistributed, it should be given back, and no more taken. - bemenaker, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1"I actually hate labels " ????? For someone who hates labels, you sure throw a lot of them. Sorry, but you got called out, and now your making a weak defense for it. If you hate labels so much, DON'T USE THEM.
- bigj480, on 05/13/2008, -8/+3 There is a reason I put liberal in quotations, it's what most people use to describe the positions of people like Obama. - dinot, on 05/13/2008, -5/+6Um, he misspoke. Campaigning 7 days a week for the past year and a half does that to you. Unless you think this Harvard graduate, US Senator is actually stupid enough to think there are 57 states. If so, then you're a cherry-picking ***** knuckle.

- stonewaljacksn, on 05/12/2008, -10/+19Yeah, BRILLIANT people, BRILLIANT. You people are all SOOOOO smart. How smart are you do you ask? Smart to enough to show your support for a candidate by alienating a significant percentage of American voters who will willingly identify with the "hillbilly" stereotype. Yeah, I'm from New Jersey, and damn proud. We have damn good education and are one of the most free thinking, wealthy states in the country. We have the type of people here who are likely to look down on people as "hillbillies",. but the point is, we dont. It's a ***** joke that you are defending this headline that advocates having an attitude that is going to cost Barack Obama the election. Like the prick later on in these comments who defends his support of degrading fellow americans by saying he has a Top 1% IQ in the world, this pretentiousness will kill the democrats.
But go ahead, ruin this opportunity to put a Democrat in the white house, and then bitch and complain about how the world is against you when he loses.- asspants, on 05/12/2008, -4/+4You can't see the FAILTRAIN coming?
Obama is going to be the next president, I'll make an attempt to illustrate how it's impossible for him to lose, regardless of how many guido's from jersey, or hillbilles from western virginia get insulted along the way. (i won't be voting for obama either)
We can all agree that Hillary doesn't stand a chance, right?
Now, with the republicans being as divided and opinionated as they are you don't seriously think they would rally around.... John McSame do you? Come on, even the people who thought Mitt Romney was a cool contender hated McSame. And I'm sure that we can all agre that Mitt Romney was #2 candidate for the republican party.
And the real nail in the coffin is President Bush's endorsement! I'd rather be caught masturbating to furry porn in the middle of catholic mass than go along with something GW thought was a great idea.- Laughsatyou, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3divided as Republicans might be, they are still going to vote for the most conservative candidate.

- gottarockit, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Oh, and by the way I actually do agree that terms like hillbilly and white trash need to be done away with. They have no place in our society. As for Mr. 1%...I know a ridiculous amount of, well, geniuses. And the one common thing between them is that they never talk to people in a way that implies that they're better than everyone else or makes the other person feel stupid. - weareglass, on 05/12/2008, -2/+12Regardless of where you're from, terms like hillbilly are thinly veiled synonyms for calling West Virginians "white trash." Using terms like these show you to be as ignorant as the people you criticize, and little better than any epithet, be it racial, religion or sexuality-based.
- asspants, on 05/13/2008, -8/+3There's nothing inherently ignorant about using derogatory OR politically correct terms to describe groups of individuals and traits that they generally exhibit. You yourself are using a broad sweeping generalization that anyone who uses epithets and racial slurs is stupid... Hypocrite.
I'll show you how to do it right.
All ***** are black.
Was that racism? - TsuruchiBrian, on 05/13/2008, -5/+4OMG I have been doing it wrong:
I was using "white trash" as a euphemism for "hillbilly".
I think we can all agree that discriminating based on race race or gender is just terrible, because people can not control what race or gender they are born as. Discriminating based on stupidity or religion (also stupidity) should be fair game, because they (at least I hope) are not born stupid or religious. They can actually learn and get smarter or stop believing in a magic man that lives in space and takes you to heaven when you die or that you get X amount of virgins when you murder 3000 innocent people.
If it is bad to discriminate against people for calling others hillbillies, shouldn't it be just as bad to call (people that call people hillbillies) ignorant? Or maybe I am not right in calling (people who call (people that call people hillbillies) ignorant) bad. - cleverboy, on 05/13/2008, -7/+2Wow. HillBillies. Hill... Bill... ies. It's NOT anything about race or status, its a well-known slang term for a Clinton supporter... and not derogatory either. AssPants, yeah... your use of the n-word is offensive too. Here's how you use it:
"*****' is a derogatory term referring to a stupid person, usually black.- asspants, on 05/13/2008, -5/+1Eh? I wasn't really going for offensive, I was hoping to make some of the synapses in your brain fire and reconsider -- but since you took it that way, you're either dense or a race baiter
- weareglass, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4There is a very clear cut difference between ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is not knowing something because you've never been taught. Stupidity is not being smart enough to figure anything out. Ignorance is grouping people together and making statements about them. It is judging people based on their association. It is judging them on the color of their skin, whom they choose to take as a lover, who they call god, which political party they believe in, where they went to college, whether they went to college. It is all of these things. Even if it is sometimes true, it is incorrect and untenable to hold these positions. It makes people into faceless entities which can be denigrated into oblivion. It was the tool of the Nazis, the tool of every instance of ethnic cleansing. Obviously none of you are taking it that far, but it is the same tool all the same.
Have you ever been to West Virginia? Many West Virginians are as helpless to control their lot in life as any poor black man or woman. They are disenfranchised by society in much the same manner. Economically first, and looked down upon from the rest of America, made the butt of jokes, the victims of sweeping generalizations. It is as full of the ugly sides of humanity as any place, only perhaps a little easier to point at, a little easier to laugh at.- TsuruchiBrian, on 05/13/2008, -3/+3The line between ignorance and stupidity becomes irrelevant in many ways when people become adults. It may not be their fault that they are stupid, but does it even matter anymore? They went to school. They have the internet in West Virginia. At some point the excuses for being stupid are just no substitute for learning.
- asspants, on 05/13/2008, -8/+3There's nothing inherently ignorant about using derogatory OR politically correct terms to describe groups of individuals and traits that they generally exhibit. - goomba323, on 05/13/2008, -7/+7The problem is that Liberals think Conservatives are jokes, so we joke around and call them "stupid hillbillies" or "retarded bible humpers" or "war mongering numbskulls" or "fiscally responsible my ass".
But Conservatives HATE Liberals....either their religion tells them it's OK to hate such sinners or their ignorance allows them to hold such racial/ideological barriers or their wealth and power sees any Liberal/Democrat as a threat to their dominance.
I will be happy to see, for the first time in my life, a Democratic president. lol, like he could do any worse than george. - carpespasm, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Not all conservatives hate liberals. Not all liberals thing conservatives are stupid. There are people who do, but these are the people who tend to not actually talk to those with an opposing view and think of those who think differently as caricatures of people rather than as another person who's wants and needs are different but most of the time not worse.
- mcquitty, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9Goomba? First time in your life a Democratic president. You do realize there was one a mere 8 years ago?

All I remember is that he got a blowjob and everyone was up in arms, but I didn't care cause I thought it was "cool".
...I was too busy playing baseball in the street and making sure I was home in time to watch power rangers in the morning and the simpsons at night.

CHARGE 6 - “My Kenyan Grandmother has always been a Christian.”
EVIDENCE - Senator Obama’s Grandmother’s own interviews contradict this statement. SOURCE 1, SOURCE 2
COUNTER CLAIM – What does it matter what Senator Obama’s African relatives do?
REBUTTAL –It goes to a person’s character and willingness to evade, distort, or rewrite history. Senator Obama’s Grandmother does her daily Salat prayers at 5am according to her own interviews (per Islamic law). Not to mention, Christianity does not allow for a woman to be one of 14 wives to 1 man. Senator Obama’s use of his Grandmother as an example of how ‘Christian’ his family is, in order to counter accusations of secretly being a Muslim, sustains the idea that the Senator is deliberately distorting the truth to cover-up associations and ‘fatherly attributes’ that he knows are problematic to his election, should he be forthcoming about them. His decision to make statements patently false in order to propagate a more ‘electable’ image speaks not only to his character but to his judgment. Distortions or edits to evidence that wholly misrepresent the truth is dishonest.
VERDICT – SENATOR OBAMA, YOU ARE A LIAR

CHARGE 8 - “I never practiced Islam.”
EVIDENCE – Senator Obama practiced Islam daily at Meteng Primary school, where he was registered as a Muslim. SOURCE 1, SOURCE 2, SOURCE 3
COUNTER CLAIM - What does it matter whether Senator Obama practiced Islam as a child?
REBUTTAL – If there is no importance to the fact that Senator Obama practiced Islam as a child, then what is the motivation for lying about it publicly? Indonesia requires students to study religion. Barry Soetoro was registered as a Muslim at the Meteng Primary School. One cannot participate in any studies within a Madrassa without practicing Islam.
VERDICT – SENATOR OBAMA, YOU ARE A LIAR

CHARGE 9 - “My school in Indonesia was Christian.”
EVIDENCE – Senator Obama was registered as a Muslim at Meteng Primary School. The school offered Christian classes as well. Barry Soetoro did not attend them. He later spent 2 years in a Catholic school SOURCE 1, SOURCE 2
COUNTER CLAIM - What does it matter that Senator Obama’s school was Islamic or Catholic?
REBUTTAL - Again, If there is no importance to the fact that Senator Obama practiced Islam as a child, then what is the motivation for lying about it publicly? Indonesia requires all students to study religion. Barry Soetoro was enrolled as a Muslim at the Menteng Primary School where he studied among other subjects, Islam. In 1969 Barry attended a Catholic School. This is the only schooling Senator Obama discusses, thus Meteng has been somewhat covered up. Why one would ask? The only conclusion that can be drawn from this scenario is that Senator Obama lied about this school and its subject matter for political expediency. In later comments the Senator stated he did not attend an Islamic school, but in his book “Dreams Of My Father” he states that he ‘got in trouble for making faces in Koranic studies’ and was disciplined by his mother. One would ask how many Catholic students remember being taught the Koran by their nuns.

They divorced, and he left Barack when he was two to go to Harvard, then went back to Kenya. His mother, grew up in Kansas, worked on a bomber assembly line during world war 2. She died in 1995 from ovarian cancer. He grew up mostly in Hawaii with his Grand Parents on his Mother's side. To all this religious stuff. Obama never grew up in a religious family. His mother wasn't into organized religion, his father was an athiest, and his step-father said "he had no particular use for religion." I don't think Barack is very religious.

REBUTTAL - The only people who care about the religious practices of presidential candidates' grandmothers are redneck hicks such as yourself. Go feed the people you have trapped in your basement and stfu.
CHARGE 8 - “I never practiced Islam.”
REBUTTAL - He learned about Islam two hours a day during the fourth grade. If you think this means he "practiced" Islam you're either stupid, crazy, or you're using semantics to influence people who are either stupid or crazy. The rest of us with an education and access to the internet will continue ignoring you or insulting you.

VERDICT - It's too bad the demo you're trying to speak to is too dumb to pick their presidential candidate based on the policies they advocate. Hmmmm...
While in 2000 83 percent of white students graduated on time, the rates were much lower for all other racial and ethnic groups:
• 68 percent of Asian/Pacific Islander students (same as 1996)
• 47 percent of Hispanic students (up from 45 percent in 1996)
• 43 percent of American Indians (up from 37 percent in 1996)
• 37 percent of Black/African American students (up from 33 percent in 1996)

You (assuming that you are a white man) making the assumption that African American's are stupid and us (me in particular, am white) making the assumption that uneducated White people are stupid is not the same thing.

CHARLESTON, W.Va.- Schools across West Virginia deserve a hardy pat on the back! West Virginia’s overall graduation rate was the fifth highest in the nation at 84% and its graduation rate for black students was 70%, the second highest in the nation. The data was released today by the Manhattan Institute as part of the Public High School Graduation and College Readiness Rates in the United States Study.

There are always plenty of snide remarks about allegedly dumb/racist Southerners, Midwesterners, Appalachians, etc. So what's left? The Northeast, D.C., Seattle, California? Apparently some people feel the rest of the country other than those areas is just a bunch of dumb, uneducated, racist hicks. No wonder liberarls have such a bad reputation in many parts of the country.- Rndm_Tngnt, on 05/12/2008, -7/+6When making an impassioned argument about how you're not an idiot, do at least spell 'Liberal' correctly.
- Beren87, on 05/12/2008, -4/+10Those of us who *do* know something about those areas, (i.e, we live there, as I do in WV) are much more disgusted of the place then those of you who just have to hear about it, trust me.
- 47f0, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5Thank you. You have a beautiful state - but some really scary people. I'm white, my wife isn't. We turned a couple of days of scenic driving into a one-day trip capped by a two-a.m. push into Pittsburgh strictly because of our disgusting treatment at diners and none of the hotels we stopped at (in spite of having "vacancy" lights and only three cars in the parking lot) having room for us. Maybe the western part of the state is better? Let's hope.
- coyne740, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Agree with Beren, I am from the northern panhandle, 47f0, and I have seen some of the old timers from the area treat mixed race couples horribly, even going as far to call them sinners. Everyone that lives around here wonders why I am moving from Wheeling to the greater Pittsburgh area. It's because of that.

- GroundhogBoy, on 05/12/2008, -2/+8I'm from the part of Pennsylvania commonly referred to as "Pennsyltucky," and nothing in this thread is really off the mark. The build-up to the Iraq War was full of comments in bars about kicking the asses of towelheads for 9-11.
Don't get me wrong, there are many normal, non-racists, but maybe the problem is that you don't spend enough time in urban areas to realize that the percentages or racists and uneducated people are vastly higher in Appalachia and the Midwest. - RogueMountie, on 05/12/2008, -1/+8I have been to the appalachains, and most of those stereotypes are deserved.

""Interviews with dozens of former classmates, teachers, neighbors and friends show that Obama was not a regular practicing Muslim when he was in Indonesia" – implying he was an irregularly practicing Muslim."
Huh? Seems equally as plausible that he didn't practice at all.
""Obama occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers, a few neighbors said" – confirming that he did pray in the mosque."
How does that confirm that Obama prayed at the mosque? Muslims pray seven times a day. If you go grocery shopping with your muslim stepdad, there's a good chance you're going to have to wait around the mosque while he prays at some point.
""Obama's 3rd-grade teacher at the Catholic school, who lived near the family [said that] ‘Rarely, Barry went to the mosque with Lolo'" – confirming that Obama attended mosque services."

- queotic, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3It definately is. "American" isn't an ethnicity - it's a nationality. One can be African, Asian or Martian ethnically, but if you're born in American, YOU ARE AN AMERICAN.

- aceec, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6Well you don't exactly have to go to West Virginia to find people like that. I live in California and a college student that I work with also swore that he was Muslim, that the particular school that Obama went to in Indonesia was known for training terrorists and that Obama was sworn into office with the Koran because he didn't want to touch the bible. Where did he learn this? His parents and network news.
- wacomwacoff, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4It's a pity that his parents are insane people.

You decried a senator addressing Obama as "boy", yet here you are painting a HUGE swath of people as "Ignorant Hillbillies" because they don't spend their lives wrapped up in online poltical debate and aren't as informed as you are. You use and support the use of the "Hillbilly" word in the same derogatory way that other racists use the term "*****". However, due to some strange double standard, you rally to digg this article and the submitter despite its clear race-baiting and hateful title.
We could debate that people have to be ignorant (In the sense it is meant, not in the technical sense) to think Obama is muslim. But "WV Hillbilly" is the same paintbrush as "Illinois *****", just a different color paint.
A post about WV citizens being stereotyped as serving up roadkill receives 40 diggs. What if I posted about a black politician's stealing being "typical"?
I guess it's different when the target is whitey.- darling, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6It's probably more about stereotypes. If they persist in not knowing about it, these "ignorant hillbillies" are living up to the stereotype. Prove them wrong, gentle hillfolk.

We have an official state festival called the Roadkill Cookoff. Do African Americans hold stealing rallies? No, and we know better than that. Both fathers, ALL cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers in Africa or Indonesia are Muslims.

Fact
You don't call the Son or Daughter of Jews a Christian. You don't call the Son or Daughter of Christians a Jew. Just as you don't call the son of a Muslim a Christian or a Jew.
Barack Hussein Obama was born to a Muslim male, that makes him a Muslim, according to the Quran. All children born with an Arabic name based on the H-S-N trilateral root (Hussein, Hassan, others) can be assumed to be Muslim, so they will understand Obama's full name, Barack Hussein Obama, to proclaim him a born Muslim.
Fact
Obama's mother divorced from Obama's father, and married a man from Indonesia named Lolo Soetoro, also a Muslim -- the family relocated to Indonesia from 1967-71. At first, Obama attended the Catholic school, Fransiskus Assisis, where documents showed he enrolled as a Muslim. The document required that each student choose one of five state-sanctioned religions when registering: Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic or Protestant. ~ Obama's campaign has no answer for this.
Fact
""Childhood friends say Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque. '''We prayed but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque. But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played,''' said Zulfin Adi, who describes himself as among Obama's closest childhood friends."" ~ Paul Watson of the Los Angeles Times, March 16, 2007.- koft, on 05/12/2008, -5/+26It's not that people think he's a Muslim so much, it's that people like you keep saying he's a Muslim when you know damned well he isn't.
- jon30041, on 05/12/2008, -2/+12Jew, Christian, and Muslim are all religious terms. It's how you are raised and where you go to church that determines faith, not lineage. Fact
You call the son or daughter of a Jew a Christian if they are a Christian. You call the Son or Daughter of Christians a Jew if they're a Jew.
Fact
I used to put "Church of England" on the census, because that's what my parents were and that'sI was brought up to label myself as. I never was a Christian. Sounds like Obama did the same thing.
Fact

Your criticisms are typical of the Republican ideology that reconsideration of one's beliefs through examination of personal experience (aka flip-flopping) is somehow "dishonest" and shows a lack of personal conviction; a belief that simply has no bearing in reality.

And what do Muslims and towels have to do with this?
I believe that we are in a fair position to be critical of those people in OUR country whose retrograde mentality and ignorance affect the evolution of our Nation towards progress. The Hillbillies and the Beverly Hillbillies, as well. Stupidity is unacceptable and not to be pardoned because we all have to pay for it in the end.- actorboy, on 05/12/2008, -16/+34"I believe that we are in a fair position to be critical of those people in OUR country whose retrograde mentality and ignorance affect the evolution of our Nation towards progress."
As I am being critical of people like yourself. To use your own metaphor: you can't see the racism/classism forest defined by terms like hillbilly because of your own "superiority" trees. If you look a little deeper, you will find your problem lies with racism and lack of education -- but rather than address those as the core problem, you, the submitter and a few others here choose instead to label those people as hillbillies, rednecks and/or hicks -- more or less painting them as sub-human so you can write them off while congratulating yourself on your own intelligence. It is no different than calling someone of a specific skin color and behavioral pattern a "*****" rather than addressing your role, whether direct or through lack of intervention, in the socio-economic state that perpetuates and supports those behaviors.- Krisgi, on 05/12/2008, -28/+15First off, the quote that you cited me on is not a metaphor; the forest and the trees one was, though. Thanks for making my point even better that certain people just don´t have the intellectual capacity and exposure needed to make a coherent decision in politics. It is tragic that they get to vote. Absolutely tragic. The fact that they concentrate themselves geographically and inbreed physically and mentally is also sad. Why do you think there is a West Virginia? - DamnMan, on 05/12/2008, -9/+13Know a lot of black and brown hillbillies? Or does the term hillbilly automatically conjure up images of inbred WHITE people? What does one call it when a stereo-type generally blankets only people of a given skin color?
- WasabiBomb, on 05/12/2008, -7/+3For the same reason that the word "doctor" usually calls up an image of a white male for most people. It's just what we've all been exposed to on TV and movies- it's just the default image. That doesn't make the word "doctor" racist or sexist.
- sonofblacula, on 05/12/2008, -2/+7I don't think of a white guy when I hear the word doctor. I guess you're racist, after all!
- kuyman, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2Yes, I do. I'm from West Virginia and I know quite a few. Would you like their addresses?
- asspants, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4... the aristocrats?
- Lone1, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3a distinction without a difference, the people who are using it are using it the same way and for the same reasons a racist uses stereotypes
- DamnMan, on 05/12/2008, -9/+13Know a lot of black and brown hillbillies? Or does the term hillbilly automatically conjure up images of inbred WHITE people? What does one call it when a stereo-type generally blankets only people of a given skin color?

- SheilaNoya, on 05/12/2008, -33/+119My title didn't say all that white non-college-educated Southern voters are hillbillies. If you bother to read the article, it's about some of the ignorant people living in the rural hills of West Virginia, especially one who "heard that Obama is a Muslim and his wife is an atheist". Call them what you want, but if they live in the remote hills and they are this damn stupid, then they are hillbillies.
Furthermore, I grew up in the South, so I reserve my right to use the terms "cracker", "redneck", and "white trash" when applicable too.- Chompy, on 05/12/2008, -6/+48What's doubly sad is that even if Obama *was* a Muslim, what the ***** does that have do with anything? His voting record, started platform, and personal conduct are the only things that should matter. Really, they are the only things that do matter unless you're an ignorant bumpkin.
- tyywebb, on 05/12/2008, -3/+16I bet he's secretly atheist but goes to church to keep up appearances.
- MacEnvy, on 05/12/2008, -5/+14I kind of hope that's the truth, actually ...
- tyywebb, on 05/12/2008, -4/+2I was implying that
- publiclurker, on 05/12/2008, -4/+1Don't laugh, I've actually met people who will bring up that he's a Muslim and that his minister hates America in the same sentence.
- DevilInPgh, on 05/12/2008, -9/+1Here is your "LOL SECRET ATHEIST" YTMND:
http://secretatheist.ytmnd.com/ - str1fe, on 05/12/2008, -3/+18Because obviously if you're Muslim, you're a terrorist. Don't you watch Fox news?
- ThisistheEdge, on 05/12/2008, -9/+2"His voting record, started platform, and personal conduct are the only things that should matter."
And are the exact reasons that he should never, ever be elected POTUS. - publiclurker, on 05/12/2008, -0/+12A lot of these people have finally figured out that it's bad to admit to being a racist, but religious intolerance is aparently OK.
- mmeiser, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1"What's doubly sad is that even if Obama *was* a Muslim ..."
Never ever, under any circumstances start an argument by cedeing to an ignorant statement. Ever. Just don't do it.
Might I suggest this tact.... "Even if people in in WV are so stupid they think obama is a muslim...." It's a MUCH better tact.
Of course... the argument there is... "if some people in WV are so stupid they think obama is a muslim, then they're probably to stupid to make any distinction between religion and politics"
In conclusion, don't bring the conversation down to their level.
- tyywebb, on 05/12/2008, -3/+16I bet he's secretly atheist but goes to church to keep up appearances.
- bentman78, on 05/12/2008, -13/+13No it doesn't. It's wrong for blacks to refer to themselves as n*ggas, it's wrong for you to use the term hillbillie, redneck, cracker or anything else. They are racist terms whether you like it or not. By using those terms to describe someone you show your own lack of intelligent and lack of ability to engage in mature debate by belittling people who differ with you. You have shown that you are no better than the people you choose to ridicule. Hopefully a good long look in the mirror will make you see your hippocracy.
- falese, on 05/12/2008, -4/+2LOOK OUT ITS HIPPOCRACY!
one day you're an innocent digg moron then it infects you, before you know it your swimming around in a river slurping down fish and fighting crocodiles. say what you want about muslims or hillbillies, i for one know that i don't want a HIPPO running the show.
its called spellcheck you smacked ass. - publiclurker, on 05/12/2008, -3/+1Correction, just because you do not like a word does it make it racist, or even untrue.
- falese, on 05/12/2008, -4/+2LOOK OUT ITS HIPPOCRACY!
- Marximus001, on 05/12/2008, -16/+8he is a muslim. check out the new york times website
he was raised as a muslim and then converted to christianity later in his youth. in the eyes of the muslim community Obama is an Apostate and that could bring significant problems to america- mimigins, on 05/12/2008, -4/+11You know what else could bring significant problems to America?
BOMBING OTHER COUNTRIES FOR NO REASON. - rdoger6424, on 05/13/2008, -1/+3where on the NYT website?
- SheilaNoya, on 05/13/2008, -2/+5Obama was never "raised as a Muslim" as you claim. His father left when he was only 2 years old and he was raised by his white Christian mother. Stop reading OpEd hit pieces and get some actual facts.
- mimigins, on 05/12/2008, -4/+11You know what else could bring significant problems to America?
- DamnMan, on 05/12/2008, -6/+9If you bother to read the article, it's about some of the ignorant people living in the cities back east, especially one who "heard that Hillery is a Lesbian and her husband is a sexist". Call them what you want, but if they live in the big cities and they are this damn stupid, then they are yuppie scum.
See how that works? Fun isn't it? Look I would vote Obama given the chance but come on now. Your ***** stinks the same as everyone elses.- richbleak, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2I do see how that works. You read a completely correct paragraph and replaced select words and its accuracy with their opposites. If someone is uneducated and believes things that have been proven untrue on multiple occasions, that person is ignorant. West Virginia is full of white-trash, pathetically ignorant, honky-ass *****-kickers; I say that with all due respect to the people of West Virginia.
- STKD, on 05/12/2008, -4/+7Not the only one. I have a friend who has lived in WV all her life, she herself refers to the area as redneck/hicktown constantly. She's just smart enough to know the distinction of the phrase.
- akamurph, on 05/12/2008, -7/+10What's with all the Obama articles on digg? Seroiusly, I think it's the diggtard Obama supporters still trying to convince everyone, and possibly themselves that he will get the nomination. Pls stop the spamming already!
- rendersan, on 05/12/2008, -3/+5Any online community is going to have biases, and this is Digg's bias. Obama stories float to the top because people here want them to. And if the people want it, it's not spam.
- gottarockit, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2If it bothers you so much, stop reading the articles.
It's just not that hard.- rdoger6424, on 05/13/2008, -2/+3This is digg. Nobody reads the articles anyway.
- Cattywampus, on 05/12/2008, -7/+8"My title didn't say all that white non-college-educated Southern voters are hillbillies. "
No, your title referred to "ignorant WV hillbillies." That's somehow better?
"Furthermore, I grew up in the South, so I reserve my right to use the terms "cracker", "redneck", and "white trash" when applicable too."
Sorry, I don't buy it. Especially in a public forum like Digg, where you can't tell if the person using the "n" word is black, etc. If you're so sure your viewpoint is correct, why not let the logic of the argument prove your point, instead of relying on old-fashioned stereotyped generalizations?
It's ironic when people use hackneyed stereotypes and insults to help bolster the case for a political candidate who claims to want to overcome divisions and bring people together.- SheilaNoya, on 05/12/2008, -6/+7First of all, I never said ALL people in West Virginia are ignorant hillbillies. I was referring to the people who were interviewed in the article, and yes, they are ignorant hillbillies. Have you ever even been to the rural mountain areas of West Virginia? The people there don't shy away from being called "hillbillies" anymore than the rural folks in the swamps of Louisiana shy away from being called "Cajuns" (I lived there too for a few miserable years).
So are you claiming the people interviewed in the article weren't ignorant... Obama isn't an American, he's a Muslim and his wife is an atheist?
My suggestion: Don't ever watch reruns of the Beverly Hillbillies T.V. show. It's obviously too politically incorrect for you.- toddsayshi, on 05/13/2008, -2/+4West Virginia keeps distance from Obama might have been a more appropriate title.
- oblique63, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2damn, I meant to digg you up... my bad
but yeah, you have a point, ignorance is ignorance, is ignorance, even trying to 'break down barriers/divisions' is hard when you cant get through to an ignorant or stubborn demographic, its not that these people want to create these barriers, its just that the mere fact that they are so disconnected, and mis-educated (this is not an insult, blame the US for this one, the educational system is ***** our country over big-time), intrinsically makes them less susceptible to understand and agree with such messages... no one is causing the division there, it just happens naturally... sadly
- SheilaNoya, on 05/12/2008, -6/+7First of all, I never said ALL people in West Virginia are ignorant hillbillies. I was referring to the people who were interviewed in the article, and yes, they are ignorant hillbillies. Have you ever even been to the rural mountain areas of West Virginia? - weareglass, on 05/12/2008, -5/+8You know what, I don't give two ***** that you're from the South. The article did not say ignorant West Virginians still think Obama is a muslim. It said ONE ignorant West Virginian still thought he was. I know hundreds of West Virginians who are not hillbillies (myself included) and I know hundreds who will vote for Obama, hell I even know some people who are working for the Obama campaign in West Virginia.
What I have issue with is your insinuation that several Mingo county (one of the most rural in West Virginia) citizens represent the entire group, which you can then go about making broad generalizations about, such as eating roadkill as was suggested earlier in the comments. You who see fit to make judgements about a group of people and not a single person are just as bad as this country's many racists, sexists and homophobes. Take a step back and think before you type, ignoramus. - AWBoy666, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2If you reserve the right to use "hillbillies" than I use the right to call the ***** hiding in caves that want to kill me towel heads that rightly deserve to die a fiery and painful death.
- Chompy, on 05/12/2008, -6/+48What's doubly sad is that even if Obama *was* a Muslim, what the ***** does that have do with anything? - PATSCRU, on 05/12/2008, -12/+30while i agree people that think that obama is a muslim should be forced to read a book for once....calling them hillbillies is just perpetuating that type of behavior and does no one any good
- CryRightardCry, on 05/12/2008, -27/+21What's the matter, that strike too close to home?
Did it upset your momma/sister?- Anachronus, on 05/12/2008, -7/+7A typical enlightened progressive.
- Falldog, on 05/12/2008, -24/+124When did hillbillies become a race?
Racism != Stereotyping- MisterFreeze, on 05/12/2008, -3/+13From the factually correct "Wrong Turn", we can see that Hillbillies are now a completely separate species.
- tyywebb, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Then wouldn't it be specieism?
- talonstriker, on 05/12/2008, -7/+2That doesn't make sense. What about calling people towelheads then? A lot of people besides Arabs wear towels...e.g. North Africans
- cranium, on 05/12/2008, -3/+5Back when they started growing that extra thumb.
- dagamer34, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9Because if you change their skin-color, you wouldn't call them a hillbilly anymore. Though its really an insult of class more than anything else.
- weareglass, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1It's not the same thing, but it's just as ignorant
- ilikesboobs, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2Ever since the inbreeding began.
- MisterFreeze, on 05/12/2008, -3/+13From the factually correct "Wrong Turn", we can see that Hillbillies are now a completely separate species.
- m0tbaillie, on 05/12/2008, -1/+55Actually, historically, the people who settled the Applachian back-country were called 'hillbillies' - not to be confused with what we consider rednecks from the South. They're called hillbillies because West Virginia (the heart of Appalachia) is very, very hilly.
