- dreamfamous, on 09/01/2008, -1/+10Democrats noted, before and after today's announcement, that Palin took a hard line on a question in 2006 from the conservative Eagle Forum Alaska:
Q: Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?
SP: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.- Ajajadude, on 09/02/2008, -1/+1How about now?
- WantToPlay, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9Boy, we're going to get a lot of different shouts about this...
- Pitofdoom, on 09/01/2008, -0/+10Edumacation against lying has worked well...
- Aliwalla, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9Drowning in it, just drowning!
- niradg, on 09/01/2008, -1/+9American polling on sex education: http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/160 ...
"Approximately 82% of respondents indicated support for programs that teach students about both abstinence and other methods of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Similarly, 68.5% supported teaching how to properly use condoms. Abstinence-only education programs, in contrast, received the lowest levels of support (36%) and the highest level of opposition (about 50%) across the 3 program options. Self-identified conservative, liberal, and moderate respondents all supported abstinence-plus programs, although the extent of support varied significantly.
Conclusions: Our results indicate that US adults, regardless of political ideology, favor a more balanced approach to sex education compared with the abstinence-only programs funded by the federal government. In summary, abstinence-only programs, while a priority of the federal government, are supported by neither a majority of the public nor the scientific community."
This has the potential to be a HUGE loser for McCain-Palin and win-win for Obama-Biden. - elf202, on 09/01/2008, -2/+8It was Bristol's DECISION (read CHOICE) to keep the baby. As it should be ... not some politician's.
- shupy, on 09/01/2008, -2/+8Yes, unfortunately it was her mother's decision to keep her ignorant in the mistaken notion that ignorance would keep her from becoming sexually active.
It is great that the girl is in a position to keep the baby. However, most young girls aren't. So we can educate them or keep them ignorant, and then deny them the choice. How sick is that. - Hillsfar, on 09/01/2008, -2/+3How many teenaged pregnant girls had an abortion - BECAUSE THEIR MOTHER SAID SO?!?
How many teenaged pregnant girls kept their babies - BECAUSE THEIR MOTHER SAID SO?!?
So the question is, how much of it really is Bristol's decision?- vexingmodstwo, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1According to the left, it's all the pregnant women's decision. Or are you all full of *****?
- shupy, on 09/01/2008, -2/+8Yes, unfortunately it was her mother's decision to keep her ignorant in the mistaken notion that ignorance would keep her from becoming sexually active.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 09/01/2008, -2/+13Sarah and Bristol should both think long and hard about pulling out.
- pandorazboxx, on 09/01/2008, -1/+2well played sir
- dheaddy, on 09/01/2008, -1/+1You're my hero sir
- dorotixel, on 09/01/2008, -1/+4It's times like these...
- Lloydinator, on 09/01/2008, -2/+9What the hell was McCain thinking when he picked this woman???
- Sfenton, on 09/02/2008, -1/+2That attention would be put to them.
7 Million dollars worth of donations in one day.- vexingmodstwo, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2They still don't get it, do they?
What the left is failing to realize, again, is that they are the ones out of touch with the mainstream.
- vexingmodstwo, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2They still don't get it, do they?
- NachoBusiness, on 09/02/2008, -1/+1I kind of assumed she was some sort of statistical atom bomb. In focus group studies she appealed to Hilary supporters, social conservatives, people who want change, or whatever other groups are being targeted this year. She just had the perfect numbers in simulations. Unfortunately those numbers are really only part of the equation... you can't just pick the person who gets the best aggregate scores in simulated polls, you need to apply some common sense at some point. That really doesn't seem to have been done here... they just saw her numbers were better than the other candidates and signed her up.
- vbullinger, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1McCain didn't make this pick. He has handlers that do this for him. Ask the guys down at the CFR why they chose this pick instead.
- Sfenton, on 09/02/2008, -1/+2That attention would be put to them.
- jackelsmack, on 09/01/2008, -1/+7McCain/Palin 08 - Keep Our Teenagers Ignorant!
As long as we keep quiet, they won't even know what sex is until their wedding night - Nick2632, on 09/01/2008, -0/+8She's living proof that abstinence-only education doesn't work.
People are going to have sex, period. At least teach them how to be safe about it. - jackelsmack, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2The Ticket: http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/6685/mccainpali ...
- infinitydl, on 09/01/2008, -4/+3So basically because Sarah Palin is such a fantastic effective and popular Governor, has a great history, has real work experience (as opposed to having worked as a "community organizer", Is that like holding a bake sake when the local soccer team needs new uniforms?) The only thing you guys can attack is her teenage daughter. You guys are a class act all the way!
- Chestnutridge, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3You have a very strange understanding of what a community organizer does but . . . nevermind that . . . he was also a lawyer with a Chicago law firm for a number of years after he was a community organizer and before he began to teach law. I guess you aren't such a class act either.
- hojin994, on 09/01/2008, -1/+4Palin is still a milf.
albeit one with gladiator vaginal muscles - DealCracker, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3The irony is that a politico writer can manage to take the answer to one yes or no question and turn it into a whole smear story. Do of you know if this pregnancy was unintended? Do you know anyone who chose to get pregnant while not married?
- Ridgeliner7, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2
Asked about the Palin story during a stop in Monroe, Michigan, Democratic nominee Barack Obama said:
“I think people’s families are OFF LIMITS and I think people’s children are ESPECIALLY OFF LIMITS! This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as governor or her performance as a Vice President and so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories and rumors, and if I find anyone on my staff involved in this kind of thing, I will fire them.” - vbullinger, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1Of course she did. Obviously, her kids know how it's done. They don't need sex ed :)
- piercew, on 09/03/2008, -1/+0Sarah Palin is definitely not against birth control, and near as I can find, has never really been asked about her views on teaching about birth control in sex ed. People have said that she's for abstinence-only education, but she's never said that. She was offered two bad choices, "explicit sex ed" and "abstinence only" and all she said was that she wasn't going to choose "explicit". Seems more like a bad interview.
She's a member of Feminists for Life which is generally pro-contraception.
Here's the actual exchange:
Q: Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?
SP: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.
Not supporting distribution of contraceptives is not the same as supporting abstinence-only programs.
Perhaps journalists should ask the campaign about her real opinion instead of assuming.
