Hillary and Obama: For Involuntary National Service
hithimagain.com — During the MTV/MySpace debate, both Hillary and Obama had some dubious things to say about involuntary service. Hillary wants mandatory 2-year national service, while Obama wants 100 hours of federally-approved community service to be "required." A federal plantation for our nation's youth?

- soot, on 02/03/2008, -13/+2I think a national mandate for community service is a great idea.
- brandoj, on 02/03/2008, -0/+9In that case, you should begin lobbying for the repeal of the 13th amendment now so you can get a head-start on passing this legislation. Amd. 13 reads, in part, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
Is it not obvious to everyone that involuntary servitude is wrong?- Schul983, on 02/03/2008, -4/+2other countries like Germany have systems like this where after highschool, teenagers have to do a year of civil-service. It is a tremendous success with popular backings by the youth themselves. It gives them a chance to travel abroad and take a break from school. I actually wish something like this existed right now.
- brandoj, on 02/03/2008, -1/+2This isn't Germany. Calling it a "tremendous success" is pretty myopic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Germa ...
- brandoj, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Is that the same kind of "tremendous success" that allowed the South to grow plentiful and cheap cotton? Are those the same kind of "popular backings by the youth themselves" just like the "fairy tale[s] of a happy slave civilisation" that was debunked by the black historian W E B DuBois, et al.?
Perhaps anyone not wanting to serve the federal government is simply suffering from drapetomania! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drapetomania - GalacticXenu, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1How about the youth just do it... without making it voluntary, so people that have a plan for their life can do what THEY actually want?
Or is not sacrificing yourself at the altar of society "greed"? Are we supposed to care about everyone BUT ourselves?

- guestworker, on 02/03/2008, -1/+0It would straighten out some of our messed up kids but our liberal society would not go for it.
- kemp34, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Disgusting.

- KonaBoy, on 02/03/2008, -1/+12involuntary is involuntary no matter how you dress it up.
- mcsenget, on 02/03/2008, -0/+8finally, Obama will do something for poor people - make them work
- guestworker, on 02/03/2008, -3/+0It would give them a feeling of self worth and put food in their stomachs and get them off of welfare.
- Rny2, on 02/03/2008, -0/+13How nice, we rid ourselves of private slavery, just to reinstate it publicly.
- NeverReturnKid, on 02/03/2008, -0/+10The government can't make you a better person.
- natschultz, on 02/03/2008, -0/+11Um, what isn't mentioned here is that they both want to re-institute the draft ie: "Selective Service" and include women in it.
Canada's population is about to rapidly increase! - robjceo, on 02/03/2008, -0/+9So now the democrats want a draft too. Interesting, McCain against Hillary, join me and face manditory service. One in war and the other in peace and both against the Constitution. Nice!
- kemp34, on 02/03/2008, -0/+6Tyrants!
- coffee200am, on 02/03/2008, -0/+4What does Obama and Hilary want to do with all those gays and gals??
- blauvelt, on 02/03/2008, -0/+6State sponsored servitude is not new in America. People are already required to forfeit up to half of their wages to federal, state, and local governments. Working and earning a living is illegal without paying such tribute to our masters. Although not quite slavery, it is certainly on a par with share-cropping and serf-dom.
- NeoConned08, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3ADD TO YOUR FAVORITES!!! The Oprabamatards can't bury it if you do so.
- blakmira, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2Perhaps after they're all drafted and they come home from the war angry, confused, insane and/or crippled, Obama can put them up for rehabilitation in one of his pal Rezko's unheated slum properties.
- jimbabb, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3Obama may be a horrible candidate, but could someone point me to where he advocated involuntary service. I only see mention of a service requirement to receive education welfare.
- sunguard, on 02/04/2008, -0/+5Down with the Globalists, RON PAUL 2008
- BooObama, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Interesting that Obama is talking about this again.
