Hillary Plays the Race Card - Again

huffingtonpost.com — "...Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me." Read the rest of it to see what's being said here. This is her latest appeal, and it's based on color.

It’s going to look so pretty, though.”

Her campaign is no longer about "vote for me," it's about marketing a dangerous and insidious demographic split that she will exploit to propel herself in the VP slot. Once she convinces racist, undereducated Americans that there is no way in hell they could ever vote for Obama, she has made it impossible for a Democrat to win unless SHE is on the ticket. My biggest worry now is that Obama will cave. If he does, he loses all credibility in the "change" category, and ends up looking no better than the Clintons.

      Ok...maybe not that bad. But his reputation would be tarnished.

      The superdels are holding out because they see this rift that HRC has created, and they are waiting for Obama to back down and accept her as a running mate. For as long as he refuses a joint ticket, she will attack.

    • sonstone, on 05/09/2008, -1/+7The difference is that Obama isn't making a case that he should win because he has the "black" vote. He isn't making this a race issue. Yes, he was forced to address race, but it isn't the basis of any of his arguments.

      It is indeed interesting that 92% of african americans voted for him in NC, and it's certainly fair to ask questions on why. The interesting thing is that the african american vote was once split because of how much the african american community loved her husband. Something changed. That's certainly something worth talking about, but I haven't seen any indication of Obama pandering to that demographic.

      Taking that same argument, you could also ask why so many women are voting for Hillary just because they want to see a female in the white house. No one is arguing about that. The truth is that people have different motives and that is ok. It is not ok to try and leverage one of the darker sides of Americana to get more votes.

Lets not compare a 6% margin to a 40%+ margin. 33% of the registered democrats in NC were African Americans 92% voted for him So he basically got 30% of the vote for free. Now if 50% of African Americans had voted for Clinton or some other reasonable split, he would have won the state by a much narrower margin. Also there are other states he would have lost if African Americans weren't voting in a biased fashion. Like it or not this race is going to be decided in a racial fashion. Obama's lock on the African American vote is pushing him over the top.

    First, Obama has won more pledged delegates, more states, and more votes than Hillary Clinton, no matter how you count it.

    Second, Barack Obama has a far more diverse political base than Clinton.

    Third, in recent contests Clinton has increasingly relied on McCain supporters to win votes.

    Fourth, a disproportionate share of Clinton's support from white voters comes from women who are basing their vote on the identity politics of gender more than race.

    Fifth, one of the reasons that Hillary has been able to build an image as a (white) "working-class hero" is that despite Clinton's attacks on Barack Obama, Obama has taken the moral high ground by refusing to make personal attacks against her (and boy howdy, could he have done so).

    Sixth, this race thing is just pure evil (my opinion, not his) - there's other ways to slice and dice the electorate that are just as politically potent, yet far less divisive.

    And finally, what Barack Obama has done to build his national support since the start of the campaign is just remarkable - as equally remarkable as what Hillary Clinton has done to squander hers.

    I think most people will see Hillary's statements for what they are: a desperate and ungracious last gasp.
