Hilary Rosen: I Am Not a Bargaining Chip, I Am a Democrat
huffingtonpost.com — Senator Clinton's speech last night was a justifiably proud recitation of her accomplishments over the course of this campaign, but it did not end right. But she didn't do what she should have done. As hard and as painful as it might have been, she should have conceded, congratulated, endorsed and committed to Barack Obama.

- thebradmiskell, on 06/04/2008, -3/+52I almost never agree with Ms. Rosen...on anything. This is a truly pleasant surprise.
- spinchange, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2This is likely the only time that one of Ms. Rosen's opinions will ever make it to the front page of digg out of agreement and not angst. Well said, Ms. Rosen.
- aliengoods, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4Agreed. And for that matter, for all of the pro-Obama blogspam that makes it to the front page on Digg (most of which is poorly written and lacks in originality and facts), which even us Obama supporters tire of, this was a nice, refreshing view on the current scene in the Clinton campaign.
- WNW3, on 06/04/2008, -0/+7Just to clarify this is the same bitch that used to work for the RIAA right ?
- niczar, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4Yeah, she's the same douche bitch.
- reverselady, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1I never agree with Ms. Rosen but this time she is right and seems to be the only adult in the Clinton bunch. Hillary C. is proving that it is all about her and not the country. She needs to go away gracefully and stop making an ass of herself.
- spinchange, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2This is likely the only time that one of Ms. Rosen's opinions will ever make it to the front page of digg out of agreement and not angst. Well said, Ms. Rosen.
- stevesidea, on 06/04/2008, -2/+46She has used up all of her instant-replay challenge flags.
Time to cross the field and shake hands.- rpgmaker, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3The thing is that there are some really nuts people. One of her supporters may even try to kill Obama just so she can get the nomination. Like the guy that shot Reagan, he just wanted to impress Jodie Foster...
- Marianne859, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0Do you remember that line in the recent movie, "Recount?" Ron Klain (Played by Kevin Spacey) tells Gore, and later he recants it back, that you only concede when you can't win, even though you won.
Hillary may have won a popular vote, (but in all fairness, it was very close to that of Barack.) And now is the time for her to concede that Barack is the Democratic nominee and not hold her supporters "hostage" unless Barack offers her the VP slot. Hilary Rosen is 100% right, we are not barganing chips, we are Democrats. To unit the party, and keep and the Republicans out of the White House, we must be behind Barack. End of story.
- dclemmons3, on 06/04/2008, -4/+40Thank you for your article. It is time to unite the party. Obama will make us proud.
- Lyk4n, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1If Hillary Clinton truly loves her country she will concede..
- Canadiangeezer, on 06/04/2008, -6/+15Totally agree with the content of the article ... Nuff said!
- OffPiste, on 06/04/2008, -28/+1How is Obama going to win the General if the Rethuglicans control the Diebold machines? Isn't that how Bush became a two term President? Why would the Rethugs let Obama win?
- FTWmovin2canada, on 06/04/2008, -1/+13You can only cheat so much. When we win 75%-25% there won't be anything they can do.
- btschul, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3Bush became president for a second term because of the broken, outdated electoral collage system.
- aliengoods, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4Bush became president because his policies had just started to destroy America. Now that the economy is collapsing and the war has been proven to be the ***** we all knew it was, things are different.
- HonestAbe, on 06/04/2008, -1/+6Bush became president because of Nader.
- Deanblackoak, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4If you post this enough times in response to various Obama articles it might eventually sound like it's almost true. Keep at it. Never give up. Never surrender. Even after you've lost. We all respect that.
- crweaks23, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2You're an idiot. Do you think "rethuglicans" makes your point sound better? Maybe you think it makes you look cool? Here's a quick tip... talk like a douchebag, I'm going to treat you like one. That goes for "libtard" and "righttard" users, and any other made up word used as an "insult."
- OffPiste, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1 "Here's a quick tip... talk like a douchebag, I'm going to treat you like one. "
I don't think there's any way you could "treat" me worse than what my whore of a mother did when I was growing up.- btschul, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1ummm.... awkward
- OffPiste, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1 "Here's a quick tip... talk like a douchebag, I'm going to treat you like one. "
- IdigObama, on 06/04/2008, -4/+31You are correct!
It's done and Hillary should do what is right and recognize Obama as the Presidential nominee.- known, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I think Hillary is suffering from Supremacism.
- womensgroup, on 06/04/2008, -3/+30Congratulations Mrs. Rosen. Well said. Please spread your enlightened message
to Ms. Clinton supporters.
WomensGroup - jstohler, on 06/04/2008, -3/+36Psst, Hillary -- your best friends are now deserting you. It's time to go.
- zelduh, on 06/04/2008, -3/+24What a shame that she simply could not be gracious and tell her supporters that it is now time for the healing to begin and that her troops must come around to support Obama. It's still all about Hillary, rather than the Democratic Party.
Travesty. The Clinton legacy (that existed before she started campaigning) is now in tatters.
Sad. - artexc, on 06/04/2008, -8/+6The last thing I want to see is Bill Clinton anywhere near the White House. Obama needs someone who will stand behind him, he already has a wife.
- jdefloris, on 06/04/2008, -1/+18I am hoping for a peaceful and large crossing of the aisle within the Democratic party of this primary season, such as that of Ms.Rosen, welcomed by those of us who support Senator Obama and know that what we share above all is a commitment to the values of the Democratic party and an aversion to the potential attacks on the Supreme Court, Roe vs. Wade and a woman's right to choose, and further catastrophe in Iraq, among other issues and the changes in position Senator McCain has made to curry the favor necessary to attain the nomination he will claim in St. Paul later this summer.
- freespiritnc, on 06/04/2008, -4/+10Ditto.... I hope there are more like Rosen around.
- BXRWXR, on 06/04/2008, -6/+2Maybe she'll get asked to be Big O's running mate.
Shuh, right. - str3ama, on 06/04/2008, -11/+3I think it's time to give her a break, she lost - we know it, Obama knows it, she knows it. This was her way of saving face and not having to admit that she lost - yea it's not exactly great sportsmanship but the sooner we stop all this mudslinging the sooner we can get to long overdue and delayed debates ahead between Mccain and Obama. May the better Obama..err candidate win.
- WayneCA, on 06/04/2008, -1/+9Give her a break?? All of the other candidates know when it's time to call it quits and do what's best for their party. Hillary only does what's best for herself. Tell her to give US a break!
- inajeep, on 06/04/2008, -2/+4My guess and it's all speculation like most of us is that she is still trying to get VP, even though the rumors were she already tried and was denied.
- PHiZ187, on 06/04/2008, -15/+21Buried for HIlary Rosen, ex CEO of the RIAA. Buried for Huffington Post making her their Political Director. The RIAA's campaign against file-sharers was founded under Rosen's tenure. She is an enemy of culture and the Internet.
- 4bit, on 06/04/2008, -5/+23On the other hand, burrying correct ideas, because the source made a mistake on another topic, doesn't exactly make you a bastion of free speach and fair treatment.
- CamperBob, on 06/04/2008, -2/+4Perhaps, but failure to hold people like Rosen accountable doesn't exactly make you a bastion of wisdom and responsibility.
- 4bit, on 06/04/2008, -2/+3Then hold her accountable for her mistakes, and let her up when she gets it right. If you hold her down for everything it will discourage her and others from trying something that might fail.
Everyone needs a chance for redemption. Even if they never take it.
I'm sure you haven't done everything perfectly, so if we use your logic, I can therefore dismiss your comment. Right?

- MisterChirish, on 06/04/2008, -6/+7But, but... aren't all Hillary supporters supposed to vote McCain now? I thought they wanted retribution?
I'm hoping that the majority of Clinton supporters come to the same realization that Ms. Rosen did... It's Democrat or nobody, not Hillary or nobody... - dinot, on 06/04/2008, -3/+9Every Clinton supporter should read this article. Eloquent, honest, and dignified, things that were missing in Clinton's speech last night.
- DeePsix501, on 06/04/2008, -3/+8Great Article. I just watched her speak on MSNBC. The way Hillary is putting a gun to Obama's head and trying to force him to pick her as VP (which honestly the VP doesn't do anything unless your Dick Cheney) really hurts her chances and makes Obama look weak if he picks her.
- UknowWho97, on 06/04/2008, -2/+4I hope more Hillary supporters are as level h eaded as Ms. Rosen as shown herself to be here. People may have their preferences, but they must remember that they are Democrats first. Obama has won the nomination, and the goal has always been to make sure a Democrat wins the White House, so Hillary needs to end this by tomorrow in order for the party to properly heal/unite/have tea and biscuits together. Because if somehow John McCain wins this general election, this year, after what the last 8 years have been, the Democratic party might as well be dubbed official losers.
- 55mph, on 06/04/2008, -11/+3PUT A STAKE IN HER HEART !
- Jimbob200, on 06/04/2008, -11/+4Submit to the man Hillary
- HonestAbe, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3Support the man, Hillary.
- salomejones, on 06/04/2008, -2/+50Actually no, it went like this:
First McCain spoke, all about how awful Obama is.
Then Hillary spoke, all about how great she is.
Then Obama spoke, all about how great our country is.
The next president should be self evident at this point.- coolkatz321, on 06/04/2008, -13/+2I'm pretty sure Obama railed on McCain pretty hard in his speech... I agreed with everything, but your reasoning isn't exactly air-tight.
- MarilynBB, on 06/04/2008, -1/+7
Did she do it to get cash out of her supporters before she calls it quits? - HonestAbe, on 06/04/2008, -4/+4"But what if he gets assassinated??"
- SailingAlien, on 06/04/2008, -25/+0Obama is about he worst candidate possible. Racist, elitist, Marxist, anti-American. Hillary needs to stick it out until the convention. By then the sheep will see the error of their ways and be pleading for her to get back into the race. Stick it out Hillary.
- HonestAbe, on 06/04/2008, -0/+9You forgot "secret Muslim".
- Lyk4n, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2What Obamas a muslim? I can't vote for him, even if he is going to undo all the damage the Republicans have done! I'll vote for Bozo the Clown or a Clinton or something!
Oh wait.. I'm an Atheist and I don't care if Obama really was a muslim(he's not), I still like him best..
- Lyk4n, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2What Obamas a muslim? I can't vote for him, even if he is going to undo all the damage the Republicans have done! I'll vote for Bozo the Clown or a Clinton or something!
- HonestAbe, on 06/04/2008, -0/+9You forgot "secret Muslim".
- coolkatz321, on 06/04/2008, -19/+5Oh boy, more Huffington Post garbage. Enough is enough. How about we get news from a real source, not an Obama propaganda site?
Huffington Post: The Faux News of the left wing. - Zuwxiv, on 06/04/2008, -17/+3You know, I'm tired of the Huffington Post.
Their next headline: George Washington reports, Obama eats corruption and ***** diamonds!
Hope diamonds! - dmoffitt, on 06/04/2008, -7/+2Wow, really? "The life's work of Bill and Hillary Clinton in partnering with so many African Americans" - so the country is ready for a black President because of the Clintons?? *gag*
- siktath, on 06/04/2008, -7/+1"Hey! You're not supposed to do what the Messiah doesn't want you to do! Execute her!"
- majortom1981, on 06/04/2008, -10/+0COME ON. Ted Kennedy didnt concede till the convention so why cant hillary do the same.
STOP WITH THE DOUBLE STANDARDS.- peoplerstoopid, on 06/04/2008, -0/+5Ted Kennedy was not a viscious lying whore. (well not as much anyway)
- zydeco, on 06/04/2008, -0/+5It's also been 28 years since Ted ran for president. Presidental campaigns have kind of changed since then, especially in terms of the media.
- kolobcreek, on 06/04/2008, -7/+1Hell NO! She should FIGHT. This country needs a fighter. Someone to stand up for the people. Some one that has hope not just for hope's sake but someone that gives us a reason to have hope. She may be short on Super Delegate votes but she has this life long republicans vote.
- coyote1284, on 06/04/2008, -1/+4You know who else is still fighting for nonimation? Ron Paul. At least Republicans have the sence to write him off as a loon.
- Ouhei, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0It's over, she lost. She's not short on super delegates, she failed to reach the number needed to get the nomination. Obama reached that number.
Being a fighter is one thing, so is knowing when to bow out because the people and the party have chosen someone else.
- yodacallmesome, on 06/04/2008, -0/+9Had Hillary won, do you seriously think Obama would be given a VP slot?
I hope Hillary's supporters understand the liability she has become.- coyote1284, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2If he stuck to his words, he wouldn't accept if it were offered. "I'm not running for Vice-President."
- LogicBomB, on 06/04/2008, -0/+12I'm Canadian and I think I'm more excited for Obama than I ever have been for any of my own Prime Ministers.
- kreneskyp, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3it almost seemed like she was going to concede and changed her mind at the very last moment.
- mellamobrad, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4There's no "I" in Democrat. Time for her to start being a team player.
- sjowarner, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6We presently have a president whose actions continue to leave me wondering how his world can be so at odds with reality...Katrina, weapons of mass destruction, mission accomplished, etc., etc. I think the last seven years have proved that the American people will not be fooled by another leader who insists on denying reality, in an attempt to create one of his or her own choosing, tout it, and we will, like willing sheep, endorse. I want to move away from this. So, last night, in her graceless and eerily defiant of reality speech, Hillary Clinton proved that she would indeed be yet another president who would deny any reality beyond what fits her own personal agenda. She missed an opportunity to be a leader in the Democratic party last night -- contrast her action to the graceful speech Al Gore gave when he conceded the stolen election years past. This 50 plus white woman has not been impressed with many of Hillary Clinton's campaign actions. I am feminist enough to look beyond the gender of the candidate -- I would dearly love to see a female president in my lifetime, but I am delighted that we have the opportunity to be sure that, when it happens, the woman elected will be one who is deemed the winner of the party's delegates, not one who ran a poor campaign, but is somehow owed a win because she's a woman, and now somehow is stunned into whining because she has lost.
- jessadhd77, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2AMEN! The only thing she accomplished last night was throwing more fuel on the fire between her supporters and those of Obama. Nobody like to lose, especially when the race was fairly close, but now she is doing more damage than is necessary.
- headzoo, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I don't think a sociopath could ever bring themselves to say, "I lost". She'll just melt into the background, and hope everyone forgets about her.
- noahhoward, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1"As a long time Hillary Clinton supporter and more importantly, an admirer, I am sad that this historic effort has ended with such a narrow loss for her."
What shade of rose do your glasses have to be to actually type that statement??? - st964p62, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3"I Am Not a Bargaining Chip, I Am a Democrat"... more like "I Am Not a Bargaining Chip, I Am a Corporate Whore". Let's not give Hilary Rosen kudos simply because she's attacking another Hillary people seem to love to hate. The ex-RIAA head is pretty loathsome all on her own.
- jp12380, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Support the nominated candidate?!
Hillary only misspoke when she said she would fully endorse the nominee. It was simply a slip of the tongue....
Just one more reason people supporting Clinton are blind, are you so blind that you can't see she will not follow through with what she says?
Who is to say she would do anything she is promising all throughout her campaign? She promised to support the nominee fully and get behind them whoever they were now what do we see? Obviously she isn't living up to her word again.
Universal health care? Do you people that support Hillary like that? Who is to say she would follow up on that and do what she said she would do? From the evidence it seems she would only do that if it helped her, if she found out it did not benefit her she would go right back against it.
I don't think her plan for universal health care is good. - Vige, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4How sad that Obama was congratulated by Bush and Rice but not Clinton. Bush, undoubtedly and undeniably the worse President ever, has more Political Etiquette than Hillary Clinton. I must have been delusional to think she would acknowledge or congratulate Obama because she has never during the primaries acknowledged or congratulate him. I am angry that she thinks my vote is a commodity that she can use as a bargaining tool. I have news for her I am not a commodity. I am a 62 year old white woman that will now support Barack Obama.
- tradwolley, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Except for the last line I thought it was pretty good. It should have said "I am not a bargaining chip. I am an American. The whole bipartisan electorate is one of the reasons our country is so screwed up right now. Senators and congressmen should vote for what their electorate wants, not what the party wants. Democrats or republicans from one will not always agree with those from another, yet controversial votes are split down party lines with only a few exceptions.
- qweenie, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0Hilary rosen is right, she should congratulate Obama. If Clinton meant even one of her promises, even one of her panders she should now promise to and then DO every thing she possibly can to ensure Obama wins in a landslide this fall. If on the other hand this was all about herself, and paying off Bill's buddies who have made them so wealthy, securing her place in history, and her fortunes, who knows Chelsea will be 36 in time to run in 8 years... the speculation and accusations will be the only legacy she will have left. Let Obama pick his own VP...He has been completely gracious and magnanimous of her defeat and her success.
- scruffy123, on 06/04/2008, -2/+0Hilary for V.P. - Hilary Rosen, that is. She is mature, beautiful, intelligent, and pragmatic. What an asset she would be.
- soozscott, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0Wow - thank you, Hillary. Mrs. Clinton was nearly gracious, disappointing, but not surprising. The basis of her campaign has been "me me me", and she beat that drum again last night. Obama has handled all of this beautifully, and has every right to choose his own VP candidate.
- FairDinkumMate, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1I just wish people(especially the MSM) would stop talking about how Clinton will use 'her' 18 million votes! Apart from the fact that polls show Obama had already begun to pick up more Democratic voters in places where the primaries were held months ago(eg. California), does anyone seriously believe that everyone that voted for Clinton is deluded enough to continue to support her after she has lost the race. Exit polls indicated that about 2/3 of Clinton voters already stated that they would vote for Obama if he were the nominee. So already at worst case scenario she only has 6 million votes left. On top of that, how many of those that said they wouldn't vote Obama were simply trying to send a message via the poll?
Clinton WILL endorse Obama because if she doesn't her political career is over. That will help to move a whole lot more over. Take out the Republicans that voted for her to try to mess up the process & there aren't that many left to worry about. - qweenie, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0Looks like Hillary Clinton managed to unite the entire Dem party after all... as she just conceded, however not until the party united to tell her it was time. Let's put this behind us and get Obama elected... hi John we're ready!
- Pherdnut, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Hillary's real problem is that the longer people get to know her the less they like her. Her campaign has revealed a total lack of integrity and character. Although I commend Rosen's commitment to responsible behavior I don't respect her for continuing to put Hillary on a pedestal. I expect I'll have daughters before the next president's tenure is over and I'm glad it won't be Hillary that serves as the first example of a woman president in America that they'll learn about.
