Did Clark Solidify or Eliminate His VP Chances?
eyesonobama.com — For certain, Wesley Clark's now-infamous comments criticizing the military experience of John McCain firmly solidified his status on Barack Obama's list- but the question is, which one: his short list for VP, or the list of candidates he's already eliminated?

I refuse to let the Republicans do what they always do. Whenever you dare to question them, or their plans, you're accused of not being patriotic or being anti-American. It's time we ask some TOUGH questions now. We have a right to know what kind of Commander in Chief John McCain would be, since he wants to keep us at war.
McCain says we'll be in Iraq until at least 2013 (his own words). We need to know if he has what it takes to make strategic decisions for the use of our military. Under McCain, we're also likely to go to war with Iran. Does McCain have the necessary judgement and strategic skills to determine when we need to use military force and when it can be avoided? We have a right to know this.
Wesley Clark's military credentials make him qualified to ask these tough questions and tell us what his opinion is.
Among Wesley Clark's credentials are:
- West Point Honor Grad
- Rhodes Scholar
- Degrees in Military Strategy and Economics
- Vietnam Veteran - Purple Heart
- Medal of Freedom
- Retired 4 Star General
- Supreme Commander of NATO
- Led a war that we actually WON without any U.S. casualties.
In my opinion, Wesley Clark has showed that he has the balls to stand up to the Republican "Flag Waving Machine" and tell it like it is. That earns him points and a lot of respect from people who are fed up being told to shut up and not question anything that a Republican veteran says, yet they say it's OK to trash a veteran if he's a Democrat.
Debating this issue isn't "smearing" John McCain or his military service. It's just an attempt to get to the truth and see what his actual qualifications really are. He can't run as a "War President" by just hiding behind the flag. That isn't going to work this time.
Wesley Clark should move to the top of the list for VP picks, in my opinion. - tcbishop12, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6I totally agree (as usual) with Sheila: General Clark's credentials are impeccable. And I admire his candor and willingness to speak his mind.
That having been said, however, General Clark has not held elective office (that's not necessarily dispositive - notably, President Eisenhower had not held elective office either prior to 1952). Regardless, for a variety of reasons, both for his foreign policy credentials as well as solid administrative experience as a governor, a presidential candidacy platform nearly identical to Sen. Obama's, his courage to take a principled stance in endorsing Sen. Obama when it really mattered, because of his political acumen and intelligence, and because of his importance to helping carry the west and with the Hispanic vote -- my short list choice for VP is Bill Richardson.- danfive555, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Sorry but Bill Richardson sucks, Hillary or even a Hillary staffer can do more to carry the West and Hispanic vote.
- bluevillage, on 07/01/2008, -5/+2Gen. Clark has no chance and never did of becoming Obama's VP. He's a lightweight. Opportunist. Bad speaker. Remember how lousy he was as a candidate?
- livegreenordie, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5Obama used a lot of "We" & "Us" at the Unity, New Hampshire Rally. Must admit they did look pretty good together. Maybe Bill was waiting for the guarantee?
- Fangsinmybeard, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3It's too hard to speculate. There are too many good VP candidates.
- bababoosh, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4While I can't disagree with Gen Clark and I don't at all discount his qualifications or record, I don't think that Obama will select him as VP.
There are none better than the conservative war machine and if he is the running mate they will distort and beat these statements into the ground.
Obama already commented on the statements saying that they were out of line and I don't think that he will take the chance of allowing this to be a factor in the voting booth come November. i can't say if it is for this alone but I think that this did aid in eliminating Gen Clark as a running mate. - rawg, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Wes Clark would be a good choice for VP or cabinet member. I think everything he said about McCain is spot on and once the idiotic mock indignation from the media dies down everyone will realize that McCain's military record is not the unassailable asset that he thinks it is. It just makes sense, being shot down and captured by the enemy doesn't automatically make McCain a military genius, quite the opposite in fact.
That said, Clark and Webb are being good campaign surrogates and testing their viability for VP by floating this touchy topic to the media. It had to be done though and if you're going to start a rock throwing contest in the minefield of military experience, Clark is the best guy for the job.
